What comes after 3D? Don’t say 4D. We all know that, according to theme park entertainment coordinators, all 4D really turned out to be is a 3D movie with sporadic water and air shot in your face. “Shrek 4D” at Universal Studios taught me that.
The question is: What will be the next big gimmick to get us to plop down our hard earned cash at the multiplexes? According to professor Jacques Verly, an incredibly smart man who used to work at MIT and Stanford, the future is holographic movies!!!
In a recent interview this genius person recently gave to Variety Magazine, Verly shared his fantasies about holographic movie theaters were the audience becomes totally immersed in the film. The reason he was asked is because the man recently broadcast a 3D neurosurgery operation into a movie theater in Liege during a health conference. That was probably more impressive than effects found in “Green Lantern” to be sure.
Now this technology only currently exists on a “Star Trek” holodeck and is more of a “Wouldn’t it be nice if….” scenario but that doesn’t mean we can’t make a brief list of films that would make great holograph movies! There is always room for a list. Read on!
“A Trip to the Moon” (1902)- Let us take a cue from Scorsese’s “Hugo” and start at the beginning. One of the most fascinating things about a potential holographic movie is that it would be a lot like time travel. We’ll call it “fake time travel” until they come up with a better name. So let’s travel back in time with Georges Melies as he travels to the moon.
“Wizard of Oz” (1939)- Imagine: We actually walk through that door with Dorothy into the Technicolor land of Oz! We follow the Yellow Brick Road and skip and sing! We get high amongst the poppies. This would be huge for the college crowd.
“Avatar” (2009)- You know if this tech ever actually comes to be, James Cameron will develop the cameras, the software and the capturing helmet that will be used to generate the “h-graphs”. Cameron will call them “h-graphs”.
“Star Wars”- Lucas is always looking for another way to sell these things. Actually I hear that this already has a release date of May 25, 2019. Lucas will go one further and re-edit the films into shorter, sub-chapters so that he can have more fodder to sling. He will also replace all living actors with CG generated entities. Now Hayden Christensen’s performance will be even more dead-eyed and wooden!!
Porn- Yes. The entire genre. Let’s face it, anytime new technology comes out the porn industry claims it as its own. Some of the first film footage is pornography while the internet was built on explicit sites. I’m pretty sure that the first 8 track tape was the soundtrack for “Deep Throat”.
What movie would you like to visit?
