<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nBlood Brother<\/em> – An ex-con decides to take revenge on\na group of childhood friends that he believes set him up and sent him to\nprison. Naturally, this is very upsetting to those being targeted, one of whom\nhas grown up to become a police officer. The group does their best to survive\nthe ordeal. This independent action picture got a mixed reception. One or two\nthought the lead (R&B singer Trey Songz) showed some promise, but more\nstated that this was a cheesy effort that resorted to clich\u00e9s and didn’t give\nits characters much motivation for their actions. Jack Kesy, China Anne\nMcClaine and Lindsay Musil also appear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Boy Erased<\/em> – This tale is based on a true story and\nfollows a gay teenager who is forced to attend a conversion therapy program by\nhis pastor father. The youngster endures incredible hardships through the\nextreme methods used and must eventually find a way to remove himself from the organization.\nReviews were quite strong for this drama. A small percentage stated that while\nthe story was powerful, it lacked passion and fire. However, the vast majority\ncomplimented the work of the cast and thought it did a good job of making its\ncharacters authentic and believable. It stars Lucas Hedges, Russell Crowe,\nNicole Kidman and Joel Edgerton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dead in a Week: Or Your Money Back<\/em> – A suicidal young\nman fails in numerous attempts to end his own life. Frustrated, he enlists the\nservices of a hired killer to do him in. But after turning a corner and\ndeciding that he does have a reason to live, he learns that the assassin\ndoesn’t believe in breaking contracts. This dark action\/comedy received more\nnegative reviews than positive ones. Some thought there were enough funny\nmoments from the leads to get viewers through the sections that didn’t work,\nbut the consensus was that the movie never quite finds the right tone and\ndoesn’t engage viewers. Tom Wilkensen, Aneurin Barnard, Freya Mavor and\nChristopher Eccleston headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Honeyglue<\/em> – Made in 2015, this independent drama\nplayed at various film festivals, but had difficulty finding a distributor. It\nis now making its debut on disc. The story follows a conservative woman who\nlearns that she has only three months to live. She makes big changes to her\nlife, befriending a transvestite and heading off on an adventure to scratch as\nmuch off of her bucket list as she can. The movie didn’t generate a lot of\nbuzz. A few appreciated its efforts and thought its heart was in the right\nplace, but most suggested it was overly sentimental and ineffective. The cast\nincludes Adriana Mather, Zach Villa, Booboo Stewart and Amanda Plummer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Hunter Killer<\/em> – After a US\nsubmarine goes missing while tracking a Russian ship, a newly recruited\nCommander is sent out to investigate. While doing so, he discovers that the\nRussian defense minister has staged a coup and kidnapped the country’s\npresident. The protagonist teams with Navy Seals to rescue the hostage and\neliminate the threat. Critics were not taken with this action picture. A small\ngroup called it a simple and fun little thriller. However, most suggested that\nthis flick was well out-of-date and came across as clunky and bland. It stars\nGerard Butler, Gary Oldman, Common, Michael Nyqvist and Linda Cardellini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Indivisible <\/em>– This faith-based feature is inspired by\nreal events. A soldier moves with his family to a army base after completing\nbasic training, only to be immediately sent to the front lines of Iraq.\nThe film follows the struggles that the wife and children face as they wait for\nnews and await his return. Critics were more positive about this effort than\nothers of its genre. A few did say that the movie wasn’t as enthralling as it\nshould have been. Still, many complimented it for focusing more on the family and\nshowing the effects of PTSD rather than taking the more typical approach to the\nstory. It features Sarah Drew and Justin Bruening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl<\/em> – A group of teens\ndecide to go out and have some fun in Kyoto\nin this Japanese animated film. The main character, a sophomore student, begins\ndrinking and partying, which lead to her having some surreal experiences in the\ncity. These encounters distract her from another student that is harboring a\ncrush and trying desperately to get her attention. The foreign-language comedy seems\nto have impressed reviewers. One or two had difficulty getting onto its eccentric\nwavelength. Yet almost all others were taken by the creativity on display and\nimpressive visuals. They called it unpredictable, fascinating and unique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Postcards from <\/em>London<\/em>\n– A teenager leaves home for Soho and soon falls in with\na crowd of escorts who specialize in conversing with clients. He soon becomes\nthe muse of an artist and is asked to help detect art forgeries. Unfortunately,\nthe lead suffers from Stendahl Syndrome, which causes him to hallucinate and\nfaint while looking at elaborate paintings. Critics were split on this UK\nproduction. Half thought it was good-looking but that the script and story\ncouldn’t keep one’s attention for 90 minutes. The other thought that while it\nhad problems, it was original and there were enough effective moments to earn\nit a recommendation. The cast includes Harris Dickerson and Jonah Hauer-King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Studio 54<\/em> – Studio 54 was one of the favorite\nhot-spots of New Yorkers in the 70s and has been described at the center of\nhedonism. The history of the venue is chronicled in this documentary, which\nuses archival interviews with both co-owners as well as new footage with the\nsurviving operator. The movie shows how they started the enterprise and tell\ntheir version of what transpired there (before its eventual closure). The press\ngave this picture high marks. A few commented that the movie didn’t delve\ndeeply enough into its subjects or offered any significant insight. But far\nmore stated that it was an interesting and fun expose on the history of a\nlandmark club. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Suspiria<\/em> – This very loose remake of the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic involves an American who arrives in Berlin to study at a prestigious dance academy. After she learns that the student whose spot she has taken disappeared under suspicious circumstances, the protagonist investigates. Write-ups for this flick were all over the map, although it received slightly more positive reviews than negative ones. Those who disliked it stated that the movie was overlong, ponderous and at times pretentious. On the other side, slightly more said it was eerie and had plenty of interesting ideas hidden beneath the surface. It stars Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, Mia Goth, Chloe Grace Moretz and Jessica Harper. To read this site’s review, click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Wife<\/em> – A famous author’s wife accompanies him to Belgium\nafter he is awarded the Nobel Prize for his body of work in literature. On the\nsurface, everything is fine, but tensions and personality clashes begin to\nsurface as events progress. The pair are also hounded by a reporter desperate\nto get details on the husband and wife’s personal relationship. Reaction was upbeat\nfor this drama. A small group complained that beyond the performances, there\nwasn’t much that was surprising about the story. However, the vast majority\nwere greatly impressed by the cast and believed the story packed a punch. Its\nlead, Glenn Close, was just nominated for an Academy Award for her performance.\nJonathan Pryce and Christian Slater also appear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Workers Cup<\/em> – This documentary was shot in Quatar\nand details the work of the migrant construction team building stadiums for the\n2022 World Cup. The filmmakers shows the way these people are being shipped in\nand forced to work in dangerous conditions for long hours with little pay. This\npicture also follows them as they compete in their own little soccer tournament\nsponsored by the employers. Response to this movie was very good. A small\npercentage critiqued the movie by saying that there wasn’t enough material here\nto justify a full-length feature, but most thought of it as an engaging film\nrevealing the troubles faced by immigrant laborers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a slightly quieter week for new Blu-rays of older titles, but there are still a few exciting titles coming your way. Shout! Factory have the over-the-top action flick, Deadly Force<\/em> (1983). This one stars Wings Hauser as a cop-turned-private-detective who will stop at nothing to take down a psychopathic killer. It looks to be incredibly silly and didn’t get the best of reviews during its original run. I can’t quite remember the flick, but if the title looks to be of interest to you, there’s a trailer for the film that is included for your viewing pleasure at the bottom of the page. Enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that’s not all. Shout! Factory are also putting out the TV-movie, Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic<\/em> (1975). It stars Linda Blair as, well, a teen who develops a serious drinking problem. The supporting cast includes Larry Hagman and Mark Hamill. It’s actually quite well-regarded and was directed by Richard Donner (The Omen<\/em>, Superman<\/em>, The Goonies<\/em>, Lethal Weapon<\/em>). The picture has been given a fantastic new 2K scan of the original film elements for Blu-ray and the release includes new interviews with both Blair and Donner. The title looks like it could be a lot of fun to revisit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sci-fi\/horror fans can also pick up Screamers<\/em> (1995), which features Peter Weller. It’s about a group of soldiers on a desolate planet who learn that the war robots humanity built to colonize the universe have become sentient and are fighting back. The disc comes with new interviews with the film’s director, producer, co-writer and a co-star (Jennifer Rubin). You’ll also find a trailer for the flick below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Shout! are also releasing a Collector’s Edition\nBlu-ray of Suburbia<\/em> (1983) aka The Wild Side<\/em>. This well-received\nfeature from director Penelope Spheeris (The Boys Next Door<\/em>, Dudes<\/em>,\nWayne’s World<\/em>) is a drama about youths in LA and is set against the\nbackdrop of the early 80s punk music scene. The cult film’s original elements\nhave been given a new 4K scan. The Blu-ray also includes two audio commentaries\n(one with the filmmaker and another that features she and other crew members),\na still gallery and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion are bringing a Blu-ray of the classic, In the\nHeat of the Night<\/em> (1967). This Best Picture Oscar winner involves an\nAfrican American Philadelphia detective attempting to help solve a murder in\nrural Mississippi and\nencountering plenty of bigoted locals.. The movie has been given a new 4K\ndigital restoration, new interviews with director Norman Jewison and co-star\nLee Grant, a 2006 Film Institute interview with star Sidney Poitier, a talk\nwith a Poitier biographer, a 2008 commentary with the director, cast members\nand cinematographer, a documentary on the production and a program about the\nfilm’s soundtrack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Like Tarzan movies? If you do, then this is your lucky week, as Warner Archive are making two fairly obscure titles available on Blu-ray. They include Tarzan Goes to India<\/em> (1962) and Tarzan’s Three Challenges<\/em> (1963). The flicks feature Jock Mahoney as the title character.
