Welcome back. It’s time for another look at Blu-ray and DVD\nhighlights arriving on store shelves. While this isn’t the busiest week for new\nreleases, there are still plenty of interesting flicks that may catch your eye.\nSo if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of\nthese titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big New Releases!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bisbee ’17<\/em> – This documentary is about an Arizona\nmining town on the US\/Mexico border and the horrific events that occurred in\n1917, when 1200 immigrant workers were rounded up by locals, deported and left\nto die in the desert. The community puts on a recreation of the event, which\nforces the locals to come to terms with and understand the severity of their\nrelative’s actions. Critics were very impressed with the production. While one\nor two didn’t think that the film’s unusual approach quite hit the mark, the\noverall consensus was that this was one of the better non-fiction features of\nthe year. They wrote that the still-relevant topic dealt with its difficult\nsubject in a creative way and provided viewers and participants with an\nauthentic sense of the awful event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Destroyer<\/em> – An LAPD officer with a dark past forces\nherself back into a narcotics-related investigation linked to one of her\nearliest cases as an undercover agent. When an old gang leader is reported to\nhave reappeared in the area, she has visions of the past and seeks out old\nassociates to try and resolve matters. The press generally liked the movie,\nalthough they were not without complaints. About a quarter of reviewers stated\nthat the events felt forced and pass\u00e9, with it all coming across as a\nless-effective reworking of Memento<\/em>. Still, far more called the lead\nperformance of a deeply troubled cop fantastic. They also believed that there\nwere enough tense moments throughout to recommend the movie. It stars Nicole\nKidman, Sebastian Stan, Toby Kebbell, Tatiana Maslany and Bradley Whitford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Escape Room<\/em> – A group of seemingly random strangers\nare given passes and invited to try out a new “escape room” and\npotentially win a cash prize. When they begin, the group suddenly realize that\nthe stakes are much higher than originally thought and that they must solve the\npuzzles presented to them in order to survive. This thriller plays off of the\nrecent popular trend, but garnered mixed notices. About half thought it was an\ninteresting update on the ideas introduced in films like Saw<\/em>, liked that\nthe characters weren’t buffoons and believed the movie provided some fun\nthrills. The same amount complained that after an engaging opening, the movie\nbecomes tiresome and completely loses its way during the final act. The cast\nincludes Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine and Deborah Ann\nWoll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel According to Andr\u00e9<\/em> – Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley is the subject of this documentary. The life of the designer is compiled from his childhood in the segregated deep south, through the beginnings of his career and eventual rise to prominence in the world of fashion. In addition to giving more insight on this life, the movie also includes the thoughts of those who respected him, including Anna Wintour, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Bethann Hardison, Valentino and Manolo Blahnik. Write-ups for this feature were very strong. A small group commented that the movie wouldn’t be of much interest to those not obsessed with clothing fads, but almost all others found the movie to be an insightful and detailed look at a famous figure in the industry.

\nBlasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are loads of interesting older titles arriving in high definition. Arrow Video have a Special Edition Blu-ray of Scared Stiff<\/em> (1987), a low-budget slasher flick about a singer, her son and her psychologist boyfriend who move into a haunted house and must contend with a malevolent spirit that torments them. The release includes a 2K restoration of the feature from the original film elements, an audio commentary with the director and the producer, a new documentary about the production featuring the cast and crew, an interview with the composer and plenty of publicity materials. This reviewer can’t speak as to the movie’s quality, but 80s horror fans may get a kick out of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shout! Factory are delivering the Blu-ray debut of the early Sylvester Stallone period drama, Paradise Alley<\/em> (1978). This effort was made shortly after Rocky<\/em> and is about a group of pals struggling to make their big break and escape from their downtrodden Hell’s Kitchen homes (some decide to do it by working in a local wrestling ring). Lead actor Stallone also croons some of the picture’s original songs in an interesting manner. The movie definitely has its fans, and the bonus features on the disc include trailers, radio spots and a stills gallery. I’ll also be honest and say that I’m not entirely sure how monkeys fit into the mix, but based on the picture includes, there is one present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion have a Blu-ray of the well-regarded Elia Kazan satire,\nA Face in the Crowd<\/em> (1957). Andy Griffith plays against type as a nasty\ncomedian with a drinking problem who becomes a star on TV and whose demagogical\nactions even influence politics. Naturally, as the years have passed, the movie\nhas gained esteem in showing how toxic personalities can manipulate the world\nby using media. The movie itself has been given a new 4K restoration and comes\nwith interviews featuring Griffith and Kazan biographers, as well as a 2005\ndocumentary on the film, and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino have a remarkably busy week of releases. They include a\nBlu-ray of the thriller, The House of the Seven Gables<\/em> (1940). This one,\nstarring George Sanders and Vincent Price, comes with a film historian audio\ncommentary and trailers. The also have The Informer<\/em> (1929) in high\ndefinition; this feature is about IRA revolutionaries and is considered one of\nthe best British films of the era. Included are a silent and sound version of\nthe feature, along with a restoration demonstration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They also have The Land Unknown<\/em> (1957) on Blu-ray. This sci-fi flick is about a ship crew in Antarctica who find a hole in the ice, fly through it and discover a fantastic prehistoric land filled with dinosaurs and other strange creatures. The disc includes a film historian audio commentary, an animated image gallery and a trailer. You can also pick up a Blu-ray of the unusual Amicus horror picture, Scream and Scream Again<\/em> (1970). This terror flick with Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee features several anthology-esque stories that actually intersect as they play out. The release includes both the US and UK cuts of the movie, a film historian commentary, a Trailers from Hell<\/em> segment with director Mick Garris (Critters 2<\/em>, Psycho IV<\/em>, Sleepwalkers<\/em> and various Stephen King TV miniseries), along with various publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are also debuting the British silent film Shooting Stars<\/em> (1928) on Blu-ray. Apparently, this 90-plus year old comedy pokes fun at the movie industry. Additionally, they have a Blu-ray of the Robert Louis Stevenson adaptation of The Strange Door<\/em> (1951). The horror flick stars Boris Karloff and comes with a film historian audio commentary and plenty of trailers. Finally, Kino are making another UK silent classic available in the form of Underground<\/em> (1928). This romance set in a subway system arrives with two different scores, and a feature on the movie’s restoration by the British Film Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a distributor called Garagehouse have a curious grindhouse title in the form of Supercock<\/em> (1975). Set in the Philippines, this movie is about an American who takes his prize-winning rooster to compete in the first annual Cockfighting Olympics. When a gang tries to kidnap his fighter, the hero does everything he can to get his animal back and win the title. As you might have imagined, this movie is more than likely a little… well… trashy and has been off the radar for many years. It is being made available on Blu-ray for the first time ever, transferred from the only known 35 mm print, which was recently discovered in the estate of the film’s late star, Ross Hagen. The Blu-ray comes with an audio commentary from cult moviemaker and fan Fred Olen Ray, and an old interview with Hagen. I must give the distributor credit, it’s difficult not to take notice of that cover image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a slim edition for kid-friendly entertainment, but this\nis what is arriving on store shelves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
