Not\nonly does it contain covers of classic tunes from The Beatles, but it also has\na wealth of talent behind the camera, including director Danny Boyle (<em>Trainspotting<\/em>,\n<em>28 Days Later<\/em>, <em>Slumdog Millionaire<\/em>) and writer Richard Curtis (<em>Bridget\nJones&#8217;s Diary<\/em>, <em>Love Actually<\/em>, <em>Pirate Radio<\/em>, <em>About Time<\/em>).\nAdmittedly, the film may not mark career highpoints for either participant.\nHowever, there is a great deal of affection present for its subject and the\nmovie ultimately comes across as sweet, breezy and enjoyable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Yesterday-patel-sheeran.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18489\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is a struggling musician in a\nseaside English town whose life is literally turned upside down after being\nstruck by a bus during a sudden and unexplained power outage. After regrouping\nwith friends, he discovers that none of them, including manager Ellie (Lily\nJames), have ever heard of The Beatles. When a search of the internet shows\nthat the band (and some other amusing staples of the world he once knew) have\ncompletely vanished, the protagonist decides to try to use their music as his\nchance at fame. In doing so, he draws the attention of artist Ed Sheeran and\nbig-time LA record promoter, Debra (Kate McKinnon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Yesterday-patel-agent-1024x508.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18490\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sections of the film dealing with music as a backdrop are\nparticularly strong, as the lead struggles to understand what is occurring and\nremember all of the songs and lyrics of The Beatles. And a great many amusing\nmoments are derived from some unusual internet searches, as well as from a\nstrange pair of strangers shadowing the performer, which pays off in an\neffective and unexpected way. Of course, the patronizing and less-than-enthused\nresponses from family members towards Jack&#8217;s latest compositions also earn\nlaughs. These scenes even prompt Jack to wonder if he isn&#8217;t charismatic enough\nto earn the attention that the music deserves. The actor also appears to be\nperforming all the tunes himself and he does an exceptional job of belting out\nfamous tracks from the band&#8217;s catalog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Yesterday-patel-james-1024x627.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18491\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What doesn&#8217;t work quite as well is the fairly predictable\nromantic subplot between Jack and the lovelorn Ellie. As the protagonist\nbecomes more and more successful, he begins to seriously question his\nmotivations and whether fame and professional success truly equate happiness in\nlife. It&#8217;s an interesting idea for examination, although the movie keeps their\ninterplay relatively light and the climactic resolution is a little too quick\nand cleanly wrapped up for this reviewer&#8217;s tastes. At least it&#8217;s all elevated\nby charming leads who do make the most of the routine plotting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Yesterday-patel-crowd.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18492\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie&#8217;s most effective emotional turn occurs between\nJack and another character introduced late in the feature. It comes as\nsomething of a surprise and works remarkably well. As the hero begins to\nquestion life in the spotlight and the consequences of his earlier actions (and\nin some cases lack thereof), the addition shares their personal views on life,\nsuccess and what should be valued. In the end, this sequence feels like the true\nheart and soul of the movie and ends up being the most poignant and memorable\nsequence.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the little references and small emotional beats like\nthe one previously mentioned that ultimately make the movie a success. Like the\nsongs themselves, the events in <em>Yesterday<\/em> are awfully familiar, yet they\nstill manage to hook viewers and at its best, even tug on the heartstrings of\nviewers.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new comedy Yesterday boasts quite a pedigree.
