{"id":18920,"date":"2019-08-15T14:43:59","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T21:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/?p=18920"},"modified":"2019-08-15T14:43:59","modified_gmt":"2019-08-15T21:43:59","slug":"good-boys-is-a-fast-paced-and-often-amusing-gross-out-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemastance.com\/?p=18920","title":{"rendered":"GOOD BOYS is a Fast-Paced and Often Amusing Gross-Out Comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/24_0008_B-merged.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9454\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past couple of years, there have been plenty of coming-of-age\ncomedies about kids growing up, dealing with conflict and strife in their personal\nrelationships and coming away with strengthened bonds. <em>Good Boys<\/em> veers\nin a slightly different direction, taking its tween leads and putting them in\nincreasingly exaggerated, over-the-top and, well, gross situations. Along the\nway, they find themselves broaching the barrier into, if not adulthood, then\nadolescence. Thankfully, there are enough big laughs to earn it a\nrecommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Good-Boys-playground-drone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18922\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Max (Jacob Tremblay), Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor\n(Brady Noon) are 12-years-old, inseparable best friends and outcasts who each\nfind themselves at something of a individual crossroads. Thor is dealing with a\nfamily-related crisis, Lucas wants to join a surreal school production of the\nmusical <em>Rock of Ages<\/em> but fears being teased by other students, and Max\ncan&#8217;t stop thinking about classmate Brixlee (Millie Davis). When the popular\nkids invite Max to a spin-the-bottle party, the three team up to prepare him\nfor potentially kissing what he believes could be his future wife. Things go\nsideways awfully quickly, with the children getting mixed up in drugs, alcohol\nand drones as they struggle to prepare themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Good-Boys-running-through-traffic-1024x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18923\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child stars are sweet, which makes the boorish\nsituations they get themselves into all the more amusing. Most remarkably, the\nthree have good comic timing and play well off of each other. Much of the humor\nrevolves around the trio and all of the school kids posturing too hard to try\nand convince others of their life experience. Frequently, they misuse\nterminology and even cuss in bizarre ways that result in unintended\ndouble-entendres. It&#8217;s fun to see the group try to relay parental advice given to\nthem and mix up the intent, or brag to others in their age group about their\nknowledge of vices and then resort to childish taunts or terrified screams. The\nkids even deliver a couple of entertaining physical gags, including a\nhilariously wince-inducing arm injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Good-Boys-cop-1024x471.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18924\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things get even sillier when they interact with the older\ncast members. There are some comical scenes involving a variety of familiar\nfaces that result in hysterical moments. This includes shady business dealings,\na drug purchase that goes violently wrong, as well as an encounter with a cop\nfinishing his shift who does not want to be bothered with hearing the boys\nconfess to him about their activities, skipping school or being involved in an\nillegal drug trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Good-Boys-paintball-gun-1024x517.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18925\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admittedly, not all of the material delivered lands.\nHowever, the pacing never lags, so even when a couple of lines or gags miss the\ntarget, the movie doesn&#8217;t flag for too long. This also isn&#8217;t a story with\nparticularly high stakes for the characters. Still, the fear, concern and\nseriousness with which the kids take every ridiculous situation they find\nthemselves in adds to the entertainment value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a personal note, this reviewer also appreciated the\noverarching themes. The boys often find themselves reassessing their relationships\nwith those they&#8217;ve known their entire lives. Many recent movies on the same\nsubject, while impeccably made, seem to resolve their affairs cleanly, strengthening\nand solidifying unions between the protagonists. This flick should be given credit\nfor, between its cruder gags, dealing more honestly with the changing status\nand interests linking and breaking apart friendships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Good-Boys-sex-toys-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18926\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie certainly isn&#8217;t a classic (and most definitely is\nan R-rated film not appropriate for younger children or even kids close to the\nsame age as the protagonists), but it does have several enjoyable moments and\neven subtly manages to deliver a relatable and authentic message.
