Cold Blood<\/em> \u2013\nA retired hit man attempts to stay off-the-grid and live a quiet existence at a\nremote cabin near the edge of a lake. However, he finds himself in deep trouble\nafter witnessing a snowmobile accident that gravely injures a woman and leaves\nher on his doorstep. Knowing she will die if he does nothing, the ex-assassin\ndecides to transport her to the nearest hospital. However, doing so makes authorities\naware of his existence in the area. This French action\/thriller was not well\nreceived. Most complained that the movie was flat and generic and stated that\nit would make audiences wish they were watching similarly themed and much better\ntitle like Leon: The Professional<\/em> or La Femme Nikita<\/em>. The cast\nincludes Jean Reno, Sarah Lind and Joe Anderson.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDarlin\u2019<\/em> \u2013 2011 saw the\nrelease of the disturbing horror film The Woman<\/em>, based on the writing of\nauthor Jack Ketchum. It featured a well-to-do family capturing a feral teenage.\nSoon after, the misogynist patriarch of the clan tortures her. This is a sequel\nto that tale (although the cast and crew are completely new) which continues\nthe story of this strange, lost figure after she is found at a hospital and a\nlocal Church attempts to rehabilitate her. The movie earned a slightly more positive\nresponse from horror critics than negative. Many felt that the movie was uneven,\ntonally unbalanced and at times quite silly. Slightly more thought that several\nelements worked and appreciated the attempts to combine social commentary and\nhorror. It features Cooper Andrews, Kristina Arntz and Lauryn Canny. <\/p>\n\n\n\nI Got the Hook-Up 2<\/em> \u2013\nThis sequel to the 1998 comedy about a pair of scam artists\/stolen goods dealers\npicks up with the two having gone legit and starting their own successful restaurant.\n When a nasty health inspector threatens\nto shut their family business down, a couple of young hustlers step up with a\nscheme to try and help them survive the threat. This follow-up appears to have gotten\na limited release a couple of months ago, but there aren\u2019t any reviews for it\nonline as of this writing. So those interested in seeing what happened to these\ncharacters over the past two decades will have to take a chance and give it a\nlook on disc. Master P, Anthony Johnson, Tommy \u201cTiny\u201d Lister, DC Young Fly and\nFatboy Sse headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\nInto the Ashes<\/em> \u2013\nAn ex-con decides to go straight. Many years after his criminal days, he lives comfortably\nwith a wife and child. Unfortunately, the past catches up with him when former\nassociates decide they want what is owed to them. They kidnap the protagonist\u2019s\nwife, forcing him to decide whether to deal with the police or take matters\ninto his own hands. The press largely panned this independent action picture. A\nsmall percentage liked the performances and enjoyed the general tone of the piece.\nSadly, more described the story as routine as well as predicable and also suggested\nthat the slow pace didn\u2019t help it develop much tension. It stars Luke Grimes, Frank\nGrillo, Marguerite Moreau and Robert Taylor. <\/p>\n\n\n\nLoopers: The Caddie\u2019s Long Walk<\/em> \u2013\nAnybody who turns on the television most weekends are bound to see a professional\ngolf tournament on the air. This documentary details one aspect of it that many\ndon\u2019t think about\u2026 the role of the caddie. The movie explains how the position\ndeveloped and how over time the men carrying the clubs and balls began to start\noffering great advice to the players. The film additionally includes interviews\nwith numerous PGA pros and their stories about caddies. Critics didn\u2019t mind this\nnon-fiction effort. A small contingent thought it was a little bland and didn\u2019t\nreally get deep into the rougher aspects of the job, but the majority found it fun\nand amusing look at the game\u2019s unsung heroes. Billy Murray narrates the picture.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\nMa <\/em>\u2013 A group of teens hoping\nto party and score some booze ask a random woman to help them out. The friendly\nlady agrees and even lets them get together and socialize on her property\u2026 as\nlong as they follow her eccentric rules. Initially, it seems like an amazing\ndeal for the kids. However, they soon realize that breaking their host\u2019s specific\nrequests may have dangerous and even deadly consequences. Reaction was split\ntowards this horror picture (although it did receive a few more approvals than pans).\nThose who disliked the picture found it corny and thought the talent in front\nof and behind the camera were capable of more than schlocky jolts. Still, slightly\nmore were entertained by the lead performance and said it provided both creepy\nand campy fun. It features Octavia Spenser, Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers,\nMcKaley Miller and Luke Evans. <\/p>\n\n\n\nMary Magdalene<\/em> \u2013\nThis Biblical epic follows the title character as she decides to leave her\nsmall fishing village and join a movement. She soon meets with its leader,\nJesus of Nazareth, and helps him in convincing others to convert to Christianity.\nOf course, some leaders are less than impressed and target the group, making Mary\ncome to terms with her spirituality and the sacrifice of her leader. This drama\nearned a mixed-negative response from reviewers. A few did appreciate the\nproduction value on display and called it reasonably affecting. Still, most thought\nthe picture didn\u2019t have much that was new to say about its subject and critiqued\nthe picture for having a slow pace and overbearing score. The cast includes\nRooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim. <\/p>\n\n\n\nMen in Black: International<\/em> \u2013\nCall it a spin-off or a sequel, this new take on the sci-fi comedy series\nfollows two agents hired to investigate crimes involving aliens and\nsupernatural forces. When an assassination attempt is made on an alien aristocrat\nin London, a recruit and her partner discover that a sinister mole has worked\nits way into their agency. The heroes must stop the threat and save the day. Write-ups\nwere less-than-stellar for the latest addition to the series. A couple of\narticles enjoyed the chemistry between the two leads enough to grant it a pass.\nStill, the consensus was that the screenplay left it heroes adrift and didn\u2019t\nprovide anything memorable for them to do. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa\nThompson, Rebecca Ferguson, Kumail Nanjiani and.Rafe Spall.<\/p>\n\n\n\nNightmare Cinema<\/em> \u2013\nThe latest horror anthology to hit screens revolves around a group of visitors\nto a movie theater. As the show unfolds, they who begin to witness a group of short\nfilms detailing their deepest and darkest fears. Notices for this independent picture\nwere generally upbeat. A segment of reviewers did complain that after delivering\nthe goods with the first tale, the following stories were more hit-and-miss. Overall,\nfar more felt that this was an above-average horror anthology that delivered on\nthe chills and gross-out fun, recommending it to genre enthusiasts. The cast\nincludes Mickey Rourke, Richard Chamberlain and Adam Godley, and boasts\ndirectors Alejandro Bruges (Juan of the Dead<\/em>), Joe Dante (The Howling<\/em>,\nGremlins<\/em>, The Hole<\/em>), Mick Garris (Critters 2<\/em>, Sleepwalkers<\/em>),\nRyuhei Kitamura (Versus<\/em>, The Midnight Meat Train<\/em>) and David Slade\n(Hard Candy<\/em>, 30 Days of Night<\/em>) behind the camera. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Night Sitter<\/em> \u2013\nThis Yuletide comedy\/horror picture involves a scam gone wrong. A con artist pretends\nto be a babysitter in order to be hired at the home of wealthy paranormal investigator\nand his reclusive son. Obviously, her plan is to call in some friends and rob\nthem blind while on the job. Regrettably, the robbers recover an ancient artifact\nand accidentally release a trio of powerful witches. Horror journalists gave\nthe picture reasonable reviews. A small percentage did think that the story wasn\u2019t\nquite up to snuff and didn\u2019t find humor effective. But while many admitted not\nall of it worked, a good portion liked the actors and thought the picture hit\nmost of its intended beats. It features Elyse Dufour, Jack Champion and Jermaine\nRivers. <\/p>\n\n\n\nSquadron 303: The Battle of Britain<\/em> \u2013\nWWII is featured in this historical drama about a highly regarded air squadron\nfeaturing refugee Polish pilots who flew with the RAF and fought to free their\ncountry from Nazi forces. According to records, they shot down three times more\nenemy planes than any other allied squadron. Alas, this UK\/Poland co-production\ndid not hit the mark with the press. While all of them thought that the real\nstory was fantastic material for a feature film, they noted that the small budget\nlet the movie down. They wrote that less-than-impressive visual effects hindered\nthe pictured greatly and noted that the characters and dialogue wasn\u2019t well\nrealized either, making this effort a misfire. The cast includes Piotr Adamczyk,\nKirk Barker, Gabriela Calun and Maciej Cymorek.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSteam Room Stories: The Movie!<\/em> \u2013\nThere isn\u2019t much information available about this release, but based on what I\u2019ve\nbeen able to ascertain online, this is a feature film adaptation of a gay-themed\ncomedy web-series about a group of friends who hang out together at a local\nspa. The story involves what happens when a wealthy cosmetics magnate decides to\nembark on a hostile takeover of their spa. The men team up to try and thwart\nher efforts, getting into all sorts of comic situations over the course of the\nrunning time. As of right now, there aren\u2019t any reviews out there for this picture,\nalthough one assumes that fans of the online version will probably enjoy it. Toneey\nAcevedo, James Achille and Traci Lords headline the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWind: Demons of the Prairie<\/em> \u2013\nAlso known as The Wind<\/em>, this western\/horror is set in the late 1800s and\ndeals with the harsh conditions experienced by a woman living on the plains. As\ncircumstances get worse and she experiences symptoms of mental illness, unexplained\nsupernatural events raise the stakes to even more dangerous levels. Critics\nwere very positive about this chiller. A\ntiny percentage didn\u2019t care for the storytelling and couldn\u2019t get involving in\nthe plight of the protagonist. However, the overall reaction was that the independent\nfeature was technically accomplished, focused on some interesting and unique\naspects around its female lead and worked well as a haunting allegory. It stars\nCaitlin Gerard, Julia Goldani Telles and Ashley Zuckerman.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBlasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThere are plenty of interesting catalog titles being\nreleased in high definition this week. Kino are putting out a Blu-ray of Alps<\/em>\n(2011), a well-regarded early work from director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster<\/em>,\nThe Killing of a Sacred Deer<\/em>, The Favourite<\/em>). It\u2019s about a\nbusiness in which people are paid to impersonate a member of a family who has\nrecently passed away, all so that their family can process their death. Those\nwho have taken to the filmmaker\u2019s work will likely find something to enjoy. The\ndisc comes with a movie historian audio commentary. <\/p>\n\n\n\nPictured above, Dogtooth (2009) is an even earlier title from Lanthimos. In this picture, three teenagers are forced to live at the estate of their overprotective parents. They are given different meanings for words and told they can never leave until a specific tooth falls out. It\u2019s all done to keep them at home, but numerous complications soon arise. This release includes an audio commentary with the movie\u2019s stars, an interview with Lanthimos, deleted scenes and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They also have The Good Mother<\/em> (1988), a drama\nstarring Diane Keaton and Liam Neeson. It\u2019s about a single mother whose custody\nis challenged by her ex due to some interactions between three at home. The\nBlu-ray includes a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nPerhaps the biggest highlight of the week might be a\ntrio of Blu-rays from Ealing Studios. The three pictures star Alec Guinness. Kind\nHearts and Coronets<\/em> (1949) features the actor in several roles as members\nof a wealthy family who are slowly being murdered off by a commoner. He\u2019s out\nfor revenge after they refuse to acknowledge his mother as one of their heirs.\nIt\u2019s a very funny dark comedy and considered one of the best works from this\nstudio. The Special Edition Blu-ray includes a film historian audio commentary,\nan introduction to the flick with director John Landis, featurettes and\ninterviews with crew members on the cinematography and make-up effect. It also\ncomes with an alternate American ending and trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Lavender Hill Mob<\/em>\n(1951) is another excellent comedy that earned Guinness an Academy Award nomination.\nHe plays a meek bank clerk who plots with some pals to rob his vaults of all its\ngold; viewers get to see if they manage to pull it off. This Special Edition Blu-ray\narrives with a film historian audio commentary, an introduction from Martin\nScorcese, an interview with the screenwriter and director and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nMy favorite of the bunch is actually The Man in the\nWhite Suit<\/em> (1951). This movie involves an enthusiastic scientist who sneaks\ninto labs at local textile factories in order to develop a fabric that can last\nforever. He succeeds and while the wealthy textile company owners and unions\nare initially impressed, they are soon terrified by the ramifications of his discovery\u2026\nand soon willing to do anything to stop it from getting gout. I like to see the\nlead as a personification of progress and this is a great satire that pokes fun\nat the attempts of various social constructs to thwart his well-meaning\nefforts. The film earned a nomination for Best Screenplay at the Academy\nAwards. This Special Edition Blu-ray features a film historian commentary, a\ndocumentary on the picture, a critic interview and talk with director\/fan Stephen\nFrears (The Grifters<\/em>, High Fidelity<\/em>, Philomena<\/em>) as well as\na trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCriterion are releasing the Italian drama Fists in the Pocket<\/em> (1965) on Blu-ray. This feature is about a dysfunctional family and the efforts of one of its youngest members to critique his own clan\u2019s bourgeois values. The movie has been given a 4K digital restoration, includes numerous interviews with the cast and crew, as well as new film scholar interview about the picture. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn a completely different note, Image are distributing\na Blu-ray of Elvira: Mistress of the Dark<\/em> (1988). This picture stars the\npopular late-night horror host and follows her as she inherits an old mansion\nin a small community. She befriends local kids, but many of the conservative leaders\ndon\u2019t appreciate Elvira\u2019s sudden arrival. In fact, they harass the lead to try\nand force her to leave. Naturally, she does everything she can to outwit them\nand be accepted by locals. Apparently, there\u2019s a fantastic UK Blu-ray for this title\nfilled with extras, but rights issues are keeping it from being released in North\nAmerica. I\u2019d check to see what this edition offers as bonuses before picking it\nup. <\/p>\n\n\n\nFinally, there\u2019s the Batman: 80th<\/sup>\nAnniversary 18-Film Collection<\/em> box set which contains almost every one of\nthe animated Batman movies that have been made over the past 20 years. Fans of\nthese flicks who don\u2019t already own them may want to take a look.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou Know, For Kids!<\/strong> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nHere are some titles that may impress younger viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
