She unexpectedly encounters and befriends an ex-MMA fighter and realizes that one of her pictures ruined his career. The lead decides to try and make amends for her past so that she can move on. Reviewers were split on this independent effort. About half thought the film was uneven but original and found themselves enjoying the ride. The others complained that despite the likable cast, the movie quickly ran out of steam and become too sentimental and corny for its own good. It stars Megan Fox, Olivia Thirlby and Jim Gaffigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Adult Inference<\/em> \u2013\nShot in 2017, this independent comedy played a few festivals under the title Wild\nMan<\/em> and is now finding distribution on disc. The story involves a football\nplayer turned failed actor whose life is on the skids as he arrives home to\nattend a high school reunion. It doesn\u2019t go well and when he\u2019s sentenced to a\n90-day house arrest, he encounters an odd youngster living across the street. He\ndecides to help mentor the boy and help him succeed personally and in class, while\nthe child tries to teach the adult to make a new start. There are no reviews of\nthe film available right now, so interested parties will just have to take a\nchance. The cast includes Ted Welch, George Baron, Christine Woods and Kate\nUpton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Black Forest<\/em> \u2013\nAlso known as A Mata Negra<\/em>, this Brazilian supernatural flick involves a\nyoung woman who discovers the Lost Book of Cipriano, which is believed to bring\nits owner either unimaginable wealth and prosperity… or pure evil. Guess it depends\non the luck of the draw. One imagines that things start off well but quickly\ndevolve as sinister forces arrive. This foreign-language film doesn\u2019t have too\nmany write-ups, but the ones that have appeared online aren\u2019t bad. In fact,\nmany saw that its an effective low-budget creeper that features a likable\nheroine, lots of gore and plenty crazy, unexpected turns. While it\u2019s debuting\non disc this week, it\u2019s also up on Amazon Prime for those who want to preview\nit first. It features Elbert Merlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Bodied<\/em> \u2013 An awkward graduate\nstudent looking for a thesis finds himself intrigued by the world of battle rap\nand decides to investigate the phenomenon. The lead meets one of the best players\nin the game, who takes him under his wing and introduces him to the world of\nrap competitions. Despite being a fish out of water, he becomes more involved\nand finds himself onstage dueling against other professionals. Notices were remarkably\nstrong for this indie flick. While one or two didn\u2019t think it held together\nquite as well as it could have. Still, the overwhelming majority said it built\nmomentum as it progressed, dealing with some interesting issues and displaying\nsome great battle rap showdowns. Calum Worthy, Jackie Long, Rory Uphold, Walter\nPerez, Charlamagne the God, Debra Wilson and Anthony Michael Hall headline the picture.\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Candy Corn<\/em> \u2013\nUsing horror films of the 70s and 80s as inspiration, this Halloween set chiller\ninvolves a group of bullies looking to pull a cruel nasty prank on another\nstudent. When it results in a death, the gang try to cover it up. However, the victim\nsoon rises from the grave and takes revenge out on his tormentors. This low-budget\neffort is debuting online and on disc at the same time. As of right now, only a\ncouple of articles on the picture have appeared and they\u2019ve been reasonably positive.\nThey state that the movie works well and expertly recreates the era and should makes\nhorror fans feel like they\u2019ve discovered a lost picture. The cast includes P.J.\nSoles, Tony Todd, Courtney Gains, Caleb Thomas and Pancho Moler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dark Phoenix <\/em>\u2013\nThe highest profile film of the week is the latest entry in the X-Men<\/em>\nfranchise. Strangely enough, the plot is a redo of 2006\u2019s X-Men: The Last\nStand<\/em>, which featured the team of heroic mutants being forced to square off\nagainst one of their own after she turns into a super-powerful entity who could\ndestroy the world. Critics were not overwhelmed with the first take on this\nstory and were even less enamored with this remake. A small percentage liked\nthe visual effects and grittier tone on display. However, the consensus was\nthat this was a mess, not just repeating the mistakes of Last Stand<\/em> but\nemphasizing action over the characters and underutilizing the impressive cast.\nThey thought it would leave viewers cold and uninvolved in the proceedings. It\nstars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie\nTurner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters, Kodi Smit-McPhee and\nJessica Chastain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dead Water<\/em> \u2013\nSpeaking of low-budget horror, actor Casper Van Dien has made a career out of\nappearing in low-budget genre flicks. This time out, he plays an ex-marine enjoying\na vacation at sea with his wife and friend. When they\u2019re boarded by psychotic\npirates, the hero must rise to the occasion, fight his inner demons and save the\nday. Critics were not swept away by this independent feature and completely panned\nit. Every one of them suggested that besides the main antagonist (who at least\nappeared to be having fun), the other characters weren\u2019t well written, the filmmakers\nlacked the ability to develop or maintain suspense and everything about the\nmovie sank. It also features Judd Nelson, Brianne Davis and Griff Furst. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Find Me<\/em> \u2013 This small\ndrama has an intriguing premise. It involves a reserved, recently divorced\naccountant who decides to try and track down a close friend who mysteriously\nvanished. The lead receives clues to her whereabouts and decides to traverse\nthrough a series of National Parks to locate her. The press didn\u2019t mind the\nlong trek. While a few didn\u2019t think that the big emotional climax hit the mark,\nalmost everyone called it a sweet and engaging film that inspires one to take risks\nin life. And they commented that the beautiful photography of the many public parks\nwas a big plus. Curious parties should note that this title is also available for\nfree on Amazon Prime for anyone with the service. It stars Tom Huang and Sara\nAmini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kings of Beer<\/em> \u2013\nFans of the alcoholic beverage will no doubt be thrilled to see a documentary\ndevoted to the subject. Well, this isn\u2019t exactly that movie. The film specifically\ndeals with Budweiser, showing the vigorous standards that go into producing\ntheir drink as well as personal stories and competitions between the company\u2019s master\nbrewers to improve the product. There aren\u2019t many reviews of the titles yet. A\nfew random comments have popped up online, with some calling it nothing more\nthan a feature-length commercial for Budweiser. Yet some notices suggest it\ndoes provide some background into the process and suggest that if you like the drink,\nthen you may find it of interest. Aisha Tyler and Jay Chandrasekhar make\nappearances in the doc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kung Fu League<\/em> \u2013\nA comic book artist falls for a woman at his place of work who seems to share\nhis feelings. Unfortunately, they\u2019re both thwarted by a bullying boss who wants\nto tear them apart. The lead decides to use his skills to summon the four\ngreatest martial arts legends through time in order to help him fight back.\nThis foreign-language comedy\/action picture from Hong Kong hasn\u2019t been seen on\nthis side of the world yet and the reviews that have appeared for it seem to be\nall over the map. Some have found it amusing and the team ups entertaining,\nwhile others have complained that the slapstick jokes become tiring instead of\nfunny. The cast includes Ashin, Kwok-Kwan Chan, Jay Chou, Andy On and Vincent\nZhao. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s plenty of interesting new arrivals involving\nolder titles as well. Arrow Video have a Special Edition Blu-ray of The\nHills Have Eyes Part 2<\/em> (1985). This is a sequel to the 1977 horror classic\nabout a family of cannibals terrorizing vacationers in the desert. For some\nreason, the survivors from the first film decide to return to the same area with\nsome dirt-bikers and find themselves under assault once again. As follow-ups\ngo, it\u2019s ridiculous and few can claim that it is a good sequel. However, it\ndoes have a couple of amusingly crazy scenes that may appeal to genre fans and collection\ncompletists. Many characters experience flashbacks to the original movie and\nthe highlight of hilarity occurs when the camera closes in on the family\u2019s German\nShepherd who also has a flashback of his experiences in the previous flick\u2026 No\njoke\u2026 this really happens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The release includes a 2K restoration of the film from\nits original film elements, an audio commentary with The Hysteria Continues, a new\ndocumentary on the making-of the movie and the troubles behind the scenes,\nalong with a gallery of stills, a 40-page booklet and other bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They\u2019ve also got a Blu-ray of Who Saw Her Die?<\/em>\n(1972), an Italian giallo film about a Venice artist (played by George Lazenby)\nwho sets out to catch a killer who targets children\u2026 and adults who get in the\nway. The release includes a 2K restoration of the full-length version taken\nfrom the original camera negative, a film critic commentary, interviews with\nthe director, screenwriter, a cast member, as well as a talk with an author and\ncritic of Italian horror flicks. Of course, you\u2019ll also get the movie\u2019s US and Italian\ntrailers. This is an interesting little thriller that takes a few chances with\nits themes and subtext \u2013 you can read a review of the disc right here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n MVD Visual are delivering two Blu-rays featuring\ntitles released the very same year. Find Me Guilty<\/em> (2006) is a comedy\nwith Vin Diesel as a mobster who is forced to defend himself in a criminal\ntrial. Extras include a conversation with the film\u2019s director, Sidney Lumet (12\nAngry Men<\/em>, Network<\/em>, Serpico<\/em>, Dog Day Afternoon <\/em>and\nmany others). It also includes trailers and TV spots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They are also releasing a Blu-ray of the well-regarded thriller, The Illusionist<\/em> (2006). This Vienna-set effort stars Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti and is said to be an engaging tale of magic and murder that fell a little under the radar when it was originally released. Seems like a title worth catching up with. The disc includes a director commentary, numerous featurettes and \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fine people at AGFA are putting out The Films\nof Sarah Jacobson.<\/em> This Blu-ray release includes the feature-length Mary\nJane\u2019s Not a Virgin Anymore<\/em> (1993) and the 30-minute film I Was a\nTeenage Serial Killer<\/em> (1996). Considered a Queen of Underground Cinema, these\nindependent efforts focus on presenting a depiction of teen life as truthfully\nas possible, warts and all. The Blu-ray presents her films with new 2K\nrestorations from the only 16mm prints in existence, along with some rare shorts\nand videos from the filmmaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! Factory have some fun Blu-rays as well. Based\non the Neil Simon Biloxi Blues<\/em> (1988) is a coming-of-age tale with\nMatthew Broderick as a young man who heads to boot camp during WWII and must\ncontend with an unforgiving sergeant played by Christopher Walken. The disc\nincludes a new interview with co-star Corey Parker as well as a trailer and\nsome TV spots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition, Shout! are bringing the Hammer horror flick Straight on Till Morning<\/em> (1972) to Blu-ray. This one tells the tale of an innocent young woman who moves to London and falls for a charmer. Unfortunately, he may also be a serial killer. It comes with an audio commentary featuring star Rita Tushingham and a film historian. You can also watch the film in two different aspect ratios, see an interview with a movie critic and witness a short making-of doc and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino have plenty of Blu-ray discs of their own to promote. The first is the Australian crime drama The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith<\/em> (1978) which includes two versions of the feature, interviews with the director, cinematographer and the star. The longer cut includes an intro from director Fred Schepisi (Plenty<\/em>, A Cry in the Dark<\/em>, Fierce Creatures<\/em>) and a filmmaker commentary. They are also releasing the British drama Homecoming<\/em> (1973) in high definition. They are also putting out a Blu-ray of the Sharon Stone prison drama Last Dance<\/em> (1996). Additionally, you can now pick up the drama Philadelphia, Here I Come<\/em> (1975).<\/p>\n\n\n\n They also have Blu-rays of the James Garner comedy\/western\nSupport Your Local Sheriff!<\/em> (1969) and its follow-up, Support Your Local\nGunfighter<\/em> (1971). Both pictures have been given new transfers and come\nwith film historian audio commentaries and trailers. The second picture also\nincludes deleted scenes as an extra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion have two very different features debuting on\nBlu-ray. The first is the British comedy of manners Cluny Brown<\/em> (1945)\nwhich is about a quirky parlormaid who enjoys plumbing, all set against the\nbackdrop of WWII. The movie has been given a 4K restoration and comes with a\nfilm scholar video essay, an interview with another movie expert and a 1950 radio\nadaption of the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Fans of filmmaker John Waters (Pink Flamingos<\/em>, Hairspray<\/em>,\nCry-Baby<\/em>) will be pleased to see his comedic take on melodramas, Polyester<\/em>\n(1981), receive the Criterion Blu-ray treatment. It follows a put-upon housewife\n(played by frequent Waters collaborator Divine) whose life begins to spiral downward\nonly to find herself forging a new start with a new heartthrob. The feature has\nbeen given a 4K restoration, features a commentary with Waters that was recorded\nin 1993, a new conversation with the director, archival interviews with cast\nand crew and later discussions with them recorded in 1993, twenty minutes of\ndeleted scenes and alternates takes, and perhaps most importantly, a scratch\nand sniff Odorama card to be used while watching the movie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mill Creek Entertainment have some curious budget-priced Blu-rays hitting store shelves as well. They include another couple of low-budget action pictures from Andy Sidaris (Hard Ticket to Hawaii<\/em>). The first film is Guns<\/em> (1990), which is about a team of female government agents in Hawaii who set out to stop a South American drug cartel. Erik Estrada co-stars. The follow-up, Do or Die<\/em> (1991), involves two of the same agents taking on another evil criminal mastermind. Pat Morita takes on the part of villain, with Erik Estrada returning in a supporting role. Both films have been given 4K transfers and are appearing in widescreen for the first time ever. Bonuses also include introductions to the movies, director commentary tracks, featurettes and trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And they are putting out the underrated Julia Roberts\/Clive Owen comedy Duplicity<\/em> (2009), about two corporate spies trying to outdo one another in order to impress their competing corporate bosses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Warner Archive have a massive catalog and are finally making one of their excellent out-of-print titles available again as a made-to-order Blu-ray. Set in the 50s, My Favorite Year<\/em> (1982) is an entertaining flick about a comedy writer starting work on a TV show. When he is asked to keep a, mischievous film star with a drinking problem from ruining the live broadcast, chaos eventually ensues. Peter O\u2019Toole plays the difficult and consistently inebriated yet still sweet-natured performer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Warner Bros. have decided to rerelease the original\nMichael Keaton Batman<\/em> films. The Batman 4K Film Collection<\/em> (1989\n\u2013 1997) includes the first four films in ultra-high definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally, Kit Parker Films have Blu-ray box set of\nclassics called the Noir Archive Volume 3: 1956 \u2013 1960: 9-Film Collection<\/em>.\nThe titles featured include The Crimson Kimono<\/em>, The Lineup<\/em>, The\nShadow in the Window<\/em>, The Long Haul<\/em>, Pickup Alley<\/em>, The\nTijuana Story<\/em>, She Played with Fire<\/em>, The Case Against Brooklyn<\/em>\nand Man on a String<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The main release this week are some old Max Fleisher cartoons\ninvolving Popeye<\/em> that are likely more for adults than children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s, Volume 3<\/em>\n(Warner Archive)<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the Tube!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And here are the week\u2019s TV-themed releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Country Music<\/em> (PBS Ken Burns Mini-series) ![\"\"](\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/DVD-adultp-interference-back.jpg\")
