Greetings and welcome to another edition detailing the highlights\ncoming your way on Blu-ray and DVD. Once again, it seems like just about every\ngenre is represented, as well as a massive Hollywood blockbuster. So, if you\ncan\u2019t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles\na try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big New Releases!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Angel of Mine<\/em> \u2013 A woman in grief over the death of\nher daughter makes her neighbors very uncomfortable when she begins to believe\nthat her girl may not only still be alive, but is now residing next door as a different\nfamily\u2019s child. As her psychological state worsens, the protagonist takes more\ndrastic actions to reconnect and the parents next door become increasingly\nconfrontational. This independent thriller earned reasonable reviews. About a\nthird of write-ups commented that the movie was too simplistic in its treatment\nof themes and didn\u2019t offer many surprises, but more reviews suggested that the\ncast were strong enough to make up for the story\u2019s deficiencies. It stars Noomi\nRapace, Yvonne Strahovski, Luke Evans and Richard Roxburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Black Mother<\/em> \u2013 This documentary focuses on a\nspiritual exploration of the country of Jamaica. The filmmakers travel across\nthe country from its big cities like Kingston to quiet and scenic villages,\ntalking to all those who make the island their home. The crew examines the history\nof the nation as well as the varied personal beliefs and religious rites of its\ncitizens. Reaction towards the film was very positive. In fact, there were no\nnegative notices. Most described the picture as a soulful and moving sensory\nexperience focused more on feeling and observation over statistics and\ninformation. In the end, they thought that this feature was well put together\nand felt it would make a strong emotional impact on the viewer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Bloodline<\/em> \u2013 Taking its inspiration from horror films\nof the 1970s, this little flick follows a family man who works as a high school\nguidance counselor. Unfortunately, he also hides a violent temper that explodes\nwhenever he feels that women and children are being threatened. After conversing\nwith students and parents and hearing some unsavory information, the school\nemployee becomes enraged and takes on the role of vigilante. The press reviews were\nsplit on this effort. Half complained that the movie followed genre tropes and\ndidn\u2019t quite nail the tone. Still, just as many admired its commitment to emphasizing\nits characters just as much as the brutal murders and appreciated the effort. It\nfeatures Seann William Scott, Mariela Garriga and Dale Dickey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Blue<\/em> \u2013 A woman in her 20s feels she\u2019s fighting a\nlosing battle with depression and anxiety and ends up deciding that suicide is\nthe only solution. However, her plans go awry and she fails in her attempt. Of\ncourse, this leads to even worse troubles as the lady is put in therapy and her\nmedical bills pile up. After making new acquaintances that include an ER nurse,\na psychiatrist, and a business executive, she is forced to deal with her issues\nand make changes in her life. This indie title has played plenty of festivals\nover the past couple of years and received praise from viewers for its attempts\nto deal with depression, but as of right now there aren\u2019t any reviews available\nonline. The cast includes Judith Scott, Jordan Trovillion and Chelsea Lopez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dauntless: The Battle of Midway<\/em> \u2013 In case you haven\u2019t\nheard, there\u2019s a big Hollywood adaption of the Midway story that will be hitting\ncinemas this November. Naturally, that means that there is also a new low-budget\ntake on the story which is posed to cash in on its higher profile competition.\nThis war drama follows the famous battle between American and Japanese forces\nin the Pacific involving a dramatic counter-offensive launched by US Naval carriers\nto stop the encroaching threat. The picture is debuting on disc so you won\u2019t be\nable to find any reviews for it at this time. Still, given the limited funding\nand hasty release, one shouldn\u2019t expect a cinematic classic. C. Thomas Howell,\nJudd Nelson, James Austin Kerr and Drew Garrett headline the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

David Crosby: Remember My Name<\/em> \u2013 Most readers will be\nvery familiar with this musician, who is perhaps most famous for his work as a\nmember of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young<\/em>. In this documentary, the\nperformer opens up on camera about his life and work. The synopsis promises an\nhonest and unflinching portrait of the man, his obsessions, regrets and what he\nhopes to accomplish in the future. Critics were generally impressed with this picture.\nThere were a few who didn\u2019t care for Crosby\u2019s narration of the film, thought\nthe story could have been presented more efficiently, and believed it lagged\ntowards the close. Still, almost everyone found the figure to be a fascinating,\nintriguing and troubled personality, describing his various personal struggles as\ncompelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Dead Center<\/em> \u2013 This little horror picture follows\na psychiatrist at a hospital who gets more than he bargained for from an odd new\npatient. Confused and afflicted with amnesia, the sufferer insists that he passed\naway while being admitted and has returned from the dead\u2026 bringing back something\nhorrifying that could endanger the lives of those all around. While\ndisbelieving at first, the protagonist begins to wonder after several\ntreatments if there isn\u2019t some truth behind the man\u2019s story. Critics seemed to\nenjoy this creeper. Admittedly, some stated that it was so low-key that it\nwouldn\u2019t go down as the scariest picture ever. Yet they all thought the movie\nestablished an eerie mood and featured strong performances. If features Shane\nCarruth, Poorna Jagannathan and Jeremy Childs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Lion King<\/em> \u2013 The Disney animated classic gets a photo-realistic redo in the week\u2019s highest profile release. Once again, the story follows Simba, a lion who is forced out of his tribe after his father is slain by a sinister uncle. The cub leaves and makes new friends outside of his social circle, before returning to save the pride from their tyrannical leader. This version of the picture didn\u2019t earn raves like the original did and split the press. About half thought that it was an unnecessary cash-grab that lacked the heart and sharpness of the animated version. The rest did comment that while it all felt too familiar, the story still worked and they admired the spectacular visuals. The voice cast includes Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Beyonce. To read this site\u2019s review, click here<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Satanic Panic<\/em> \u2013 A pizza delivery driver gets herself\ninto plenty of trouble in this horror\/comedy at the end of her shift while\ndropping off her last order for the night. She\u2019s shocked to discover that the manor\nis home to some hungry Satanists who, in addition to wanting a midnight snack,\nare on the lookout for a human sacrifice. The lead desperately attempts to\navoid being sacrificed by the sinister cult. Response towards this independent feature\nwas mixed-positive. Those who didn\u2019t care for it thought that while some of the\njokes worked, the picture was uneven and didn\u2019t push any genre boundaries. Slightly\nmore suggested that it did everything possible to entertain viewers; they found\nit very funny and enjoyed the lack of pretense. It stars Rebecca Romijn, Ruby\nModine and Jerry O\u2019Connell and Ruby Modine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sprinter<\/em> \u2013 In this drama, a Jamaican sprinter rises in\nthe world of track & field, hoping that his efforts will allow him to enter\nthe US and reunite with his mother. Unfortunately, he must balance his success\nwith various personal issues at home. These problems include a violent father\nand a con-man brother hoping to use the lead\u2019s success to further his next\nscam. The press appeared to enjoy this story, giving it favorable reviews. A\nsmall contingent did suggest that while well-intentioned, the film didn\u2019t quite\nclick or make a big emotional mark. Yet most described it as an earnest, thoughtful\nand inspirational picture with a very likable lead character. It features Dale\nElliott, David Alan Grier, Lorraine Toussaint and Bryshere Y. Gray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Strange But True<\/em> \u2013 When a high school student dies in\na tragic accident, his parents spend the next five years attempting to come to\ngrips with their loss. They get a sudden shock when their son\u2019s ex-girlfriend\narrives on the doorstep, telling them that she is pregnant with the deceased teen\u2019s\nchild. The disbelieving family try to dismiss the claim, but in doing so begin\nto unravel unexpected secrets about the clan. This suspense flick also received\ndivided notices from reviewers. Nearly half couldn\u2019t get on its wavelength,\nfound it bizarre and stated that the ending was mishandled. Still, slightly\nmore complimented the great cast and called the film unique and surprising. The\ncast includes Amy Ryan, Nick Robinson, Margaret Qualley, Greg Kinnear, Blythe\nDanner and Brian Cox. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tone-Deaf<\/em> \u2013 The second indie horror-comedy to hit disc\nthis week is this tale of a millennial enduring a rough patch at work and problems\nin her personal relationships. She decides to head out to the country for the\nweekend, renting a home from a quirky widower. Alas, the protagonist soon discovers\nthat the owner is hiding a psychotic personality and that the peace and quiet\nshe yearned for isn\u2019t any easier to come by in rural areas. Critics weren\u2019t\nespecially enamored with this picture. While a few did find it amusing and\nappreciated the ongoing conflict between two characters from different generations,\nmost didn\u2019t feature any likable characters and became repetitious as it progressed.\nAmanda Crew, Robert Patrick, Hayley Marie Norman and Ray Wise headline the\npicture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Viewer Discretion Advised<\/em> \u2013 This documentary deals\nwith the way that we view entertainment and how our lives have changed over the\npast couple of decades. A 21-year-old who streams and watches programming\nindependently at his own pace decides to follow his TV-obsessed dad and understand\nthe old-fashioned way that he watches shows. The youngster notes how entertainment\nhas changed, and how programs that used to bring families together and create\nwater-cooler talk at work the following day are now fragmented; in fact, the\nnew model seems to separate individuals. This movie has played a few festivals\nand been nominated for some prizes, but hasn\u2019t garnered many reviews yet, so interested\nparties will have to make an appointment on their own to check it out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Wonder Woman: Bloodlines <\/em>\u2013 DC and Warner Bros. have\nbeen making a great deal of animated, direct-to-disc superhero films over the\npast decade. The latest addition to the franchise is a Wonder Woman adventure that\nfollows the Amazonian warrior as she attempts to assist a young girl who has\nfallen in with a deadly organization called Villany Inc. (I guess these criminals\nare open and public about their nefarious activities). To save the day, she\nmust inspire the youngster and vanquish the bad guys. The press gave this\neffort decent marks. Some did note that the movie tried to juggle so many plot\nthreads that it wasn\u2019t involving and didn\u2019t rank as highly as the previous Wonder\nWoman animated film. Still, most stated that the action was exciting and the\nattempts to develop the characters were more than welcome. Marie Avgeropoulos,\nRosario Dawson, Jeffrey Donovan and Michael Dorn provide the voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Once again, there are a great many older titles hitting high\ndefinition with all sorts of new upgrades. Arrow Video have a Special Edition\nof Crimson Peak<\/em> (2015), the visual impressive Gothic creeper from director\nGuillermo del Toro (Pan\u2019s Labyrinth<\/em>, The Shape of Water<\/em>). This haunted\nmansion fable featuring a malevolent spirit arrives with all sorts of bonuses\nthat include a commentary with director\/co-writer del Toro, a feature-length\ndocumentary on the production, a Spanish-language interview with the filmmaker,\nfour featurettes detailing specific aspects of the movie, an examination of\nGothic romance featuring the cast and crew, a discussion about the use of color\nin the picture, a look at the elaborate costumes, and clips detailing the\nproduction design and sets. And that\u2019s only the half of it. You\u2019ll also get deleted\nscenes, more interviews about the film, its ghostly creations, publicity\nmaterials and a video essay on the director and his work. If you liked the\nmovie, this disc contains just about everything you could possibly want. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino have a wild array of Blu-ray coming as well. This\nincludes the period mob picture, Billy Bathgate<\/em> (1991) featuring Bruce\nWillis, as well as the Rudolph Valentino silent action\/comedy, The Eagle<\/em>\n(1925). The movie has been restored in 2K from a 35 mm print and this\nparticular disc boasts a few added features like a new musical score and a film\nhistorian audio commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If horror is more to your liking, the distributor is\npresenting Parasite 3D<\/em> (1982) as a Special Edition Blu-ray. This means\nyou can watch all of the gooey monster mayhem in an added dimension. It\u2019s about\na scientist who creates a deadly parasite which attaches itself to him. The new\nhost must find a way to kill it before it does the same to him and others \u2013 the\nmovie features Demi Moore in an early role as the film\u2019s co-lead. You\u2019ll get both\nthe 2D and 3D versions of the film, as well as an interview with the\nscreenwriters, director, production manager, art director, make-up effects man\nand the composer. It also comes with a commentary track featuring a cinema\nexpert and one of the film\u2019s co-writers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thriller Phobia<\/em> (1980) is also getting a Special Edition\nhigh definition upgrade. This one is about a group of patients with crippling\nfears who are slowly driven mad by an experimental new therapy technique. John\nHuston directed this picture, although it\u2019s admittedly not one of his best. Still,\nthe thriller may provide some laughs to genre fans in the right frame of mind.\nThe film had received a 4K master and comes with a film historian commentary\nand interviews with some of the cast members.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The high seas adventure film Tamango<\/em> (1958) is also\nbeing put out by Kino with a critic commentary, as well as the TV-movie horror\nsequel Trilogy of Terror II<\/em> (1996), which features another contingent of\ncreepy tales (including a second go-round with the violent Zuni fetish doll from\nthe original picture). Perhaps most amusingly, they are also releasing Zoltan:\nHound of Dracula<\/em> (1977) aka Dracula\u2019s Dog<\/em> on Blu-ray. This film is\ndevoted to Dracula\u2019s vampiric pooch as he is un-earthed and goes out searching for\na new owner\u2026 specifically, his Transylvanian master\u2019s last living relative, a genial\nfamily man living in LA. The movie has also been given a 4K master and comes\nwith a film historian commentary and publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the release of a new Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/em> movie around\nthe corner, Sony are upgrading Charlie\u2019s Angels<\/em> (2000) and Charlie\u2019s\nAngels: Full Throttle<\/em> (2003) to 4K and giving them another release. The studio\nalso is ready to put out a Blu-ray of the Oscar-winning drama, A Man for All\nSeasons<\/em> (1966).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion have the fantastic documentary When We Were\nKings<\/em> (1996) arriving on Blu-ray. This picture details Mohammad Ali\u2019s trip\nto Zaire in 1974 for his \u201cRumble in the Jungle\u201d match with George Foreman. When\nthe event was delayed, the filmmakers were lucky enough to capture Ali for a\nmuch longer period of time, making this a more detailed portrait of the man\nthan had ever been seen before. The film has been newly restored in 4K and\ncomes with a 2008 doc about the Zaire music festival which was going on at the\nsame time. It also includes interviews with the producer and the director as\nwell as a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cohen Media group are putting out a Blu-ray of the Oscar-nominated\nFrench drama, The Return of Martin Guerre <\/em>(1982), which was later remade\nin English as Sommersby <\/em>(1993). This disc comes with a discussion with\nthe lead actress and some trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpion have the drama Covergirl <\/em>(1984) remastered\nin 2K for its Blu-ray debut. It follows the trials and tribulations of an up-and-coming\nsupermodel. They also have Talking Walls<\/em> (1987) a thriller about a voyeur\nwho takes over a motel as sets up cameras to conduct a morally and ethically disturbing\nexperiment.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Warner Archive are upgrading one of their popular made-to-order\nDVDs for Blu-ray. This time it\u2019s the effective TV-horror flick, Don\u2019t Be\nAfraid of the Dark<\/em> (1973). This title is about a creepy old house hiding\nsome monstrous residents; it was eventually remade and released to cinemas in\n2010. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Mondo Macabro were set to release The Killer of\nDolls<\/em> (1975) a week or so back. Unfortunately, its release was delayed, but\nit is finally hitting shelves this week. They also have Woman Chasing the\nButterfly of Death<\/em> (1978), a South Korean chiller about a student making\nfriends with an elderly book salesman obsessed with some dark materials. Based\non the synopsis, it sounds like it may contain some similar elements featured\nin Stephen King\u2019s eerie Apt Pupil<\/em>. The disc also includes a 4K transfer\nwith numerous interviews and bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looks like it\u2019s a slow week for tyke-friendly releases, but\nhere\u2019s what is available (please note that the Wonder Woman animated film is\nrated PG-13 and is intended for slightly older audiences).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
