Recent examples include misfires like Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/em>, Hitman: Agent 47<\/em> and Need for Speed<\/em>. Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> does its best to break the trend and make its mark with both audiences and reviewers, but this particular feature will only impress the youngest of viewers.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knowing that others will want him for study and experimentation, the\nhedgehog is advised to stay hidden and given magical rings that allow him to\ntransport to other worlds. After settling in a small Montana community, the\nlonely protagonist finds life, well, a bit dull. It gets considerably more\nexciting when he accidentally draws the attention of sinister government agent\nDr. Ivan Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who sets out to capture the creature. After losing\nhis special rings, Sonic enlists the assistance of local sheriff Tom Wachowski\n(James Marsden) to help him retrieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the production phase, there was much public criticism\nabout the look of Sonic, who many felt possessed too many strange anthropomorphic\ntraits. The four-month release delay that was needed to create a new appearance\nfor the lead character was no doubt an improvement and certainly looks less\njarring, although cartoonish. However, one wishes that an extra few months had also\nbeen spent on the script. Almost all of the gags are aimed squarely at kids. Some\nof the adult characters featured even behave like children (in particular, a\ndeputy). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is some amusing interplay which has partly been improvised\nbetween Robotnik and Tom. Certainly, Carrey is going wild in every scene he\nappears. While it isn\u2019t hilarious, he manages to eke a few laughs out of the slim\nmaterial. Especially at the beginning of the film, when the villain boasts\nabout his intelligence and Tom fires a few verbal jabs in return. In fact, these\nscenes make one wish that the human antagonist and male lead had more time\nonscreen together, as their material ends up being the funniest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, from this point forward it\u2019s a road movie as Tom\nand Sonic attempt to avoid Robotnik and his drones by driving cross country to\nSan Francisco. Many of you may be asking why Sonic doesn\u2019t race out there\nhimself \u2013 it is explained that he doesn\u2019t know where to find the city (which\ndoesn\u2019t really make sense and is only an excuse to further the plot). Anyway, after\na conversation comes up regarding bucket lists, the hedgehog realizes that he\nhas little time left on the planet to enjoy certain experiences. This\ncomplicates matters and gets the two characters into further trouble along the\nway. It all comes across as forced and the gags involving Sonic being amazed by\nthe world around him are routine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie features three major action scenes involving a\nbarfight, a car chase and a climactic showdown. These bits offer the potential for\nsome great visuals, especially with Sonic rushing around at incredible speed. It\naccomplishes this at times, when the camera follows the hero as he casually strolls\naround human beings who are practically frozen in time. They\u2019re amusing bits,\nalthough they lack the grand panache displayed in other movies\u2026 the recent X-Men<\/em>\nflicks featuring the zippy Quicksilver character get to show off his skills in\nfar more impressive ways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that sums up the movie in general. It\u2019s sweet, moves at\na quick clip, has a couple of chuckles and one or two effects sequences that\nwork reasonably well. Still, there\u2019s hardly anything in it that will be remembered\nafter the credits roll. In the end, Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> is a perfectly\nserviceable kid\u2019s flick, but one that won\u2019t make a lasting impression on anyone\nover the very youthful demographic that have been specifically targeted.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
