If you grew up during the 1980s, then you like remember the\n\u201cChoose Your Own Adventure\u201d book series. These paperbacks would allow readers\nto make choices as they read, taking the story in different directions as they flipped\npages. Recently, Netflix have also displayed this unique branching concept including\nBlack Mirror<\/em> and even a children\u2019s Puss in Boots escapade. The latest variation\nis a feature-length sequel to one of their popular comedy series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those unfamiliar with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt<\/em>, protagonist\nKimmy (Ellie Kemper) is an escapee from a doomsday cult run by the sinister Reverend\nRichard (Jon Hamm). After spending most of her early life in a hidden bunker,\nshe must make a fresh start in the modern world. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt:\nKimmy vs the Reverend<\/em> picks up some time after the series finale. The sweet\nand innocent heroine is now engaged to the similarly na\u00efve royal family member,\nFrederick (Daniel Radcliffe). Three days before their wedding, Kimmy finds\nevidence suggesting that there may be another cult member still unaccounted\nfor. With friends Titus (Tituss Burgess), Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) and Lillian\n(Carol Kane), she must confront an imprisoned Richard, try to free whomever is\nstill under his control, and get back to New York in time for her nuptials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, the unique factor making this different from a\ntypical movie is the addition of interactive options made available to viewers\nas they watch. There are an awful lot of them included, asking viewers to make\nseemingly inconsequential choices. This includes selecting a wedding dress (let\nme be clear, this is a decision that is only insignificant to this reviewer) or\ndeciding whether to stay on the phone and listen to an extended answering\nmachine message, to more important and dramatic courses of action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans of the show will certainly enjoy what they see, as the\ntone is similar to the show. This isn\u2019t deep stuff, but the characters possess\na goofy and upbeat charm that is engaging. Like any comedy, certain scenarios\nare more humorous than others, but the cast do their best to deliver quirky\njokes and observations, many of which earn a chuckle. Some of the best running\ngags involve an increasingly upset Titus becoming more desperate for food as the\nstory progresses. He even begins having hallucinogenic visions that lead to the\ncharacter hilariously devouring grub that may or may not exist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also entertaining are the extended silences and looks used by\nperformers to stretch moments out while waiting for the viewer to use their\nremotes. Some of Jane Krakowski\u2019s exaggerated pauses are particularly good.\nHamm is also amusing as the antagonist with a multitude of plans to break out\nof prison, and the feature even gives the reverend and Kimmy a brief\nopportunity to address the reasons behind his bad behavior. Radcliffe is a\nfunny addition and each of the other cast members get a moment or two to shine.\nAdditionally, this is a zany cameo from a famous singer, as well as a prank\nthat occurs to those who decide to skip the opening credits.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This reviewer went through the picture a couple of times,\ntrying various options in order to see what might change. In fact, I first went\nthrough the movie making eccentric and purposefully wrong selections, then\nre-watched it making all of the right calls. The central story generally heads\nin the same direction and many of the incorrect choices will lead you back to take\nanother guess. However, some calls you wouldn\u2019t think of as important ultimately\nhave a big impact, altering the story. You\u2019ll definitely note at least two\nsignificant story differences by the close if you make all the correct\ndecisions. It\u2019s also worth noting that the film is actually more entertaining\nthe second time around, as initially some of gags do slip by unnoticed while\none is focused on guiding the characters through the plot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t earth-shattering stuff, but Unbreakable Kimmy\nSchmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend<\/em> has a likable cast and works quite well as\nan interactive experiment, managing to provide plenty of options and fun as\nviewers guide its entertaining characters through an enjoyably silly story.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
