Since retiring from his\nposition on the show in 2015, he has maintained a relatively low-profile. This\nweek sees the release of a new film which he wrote and directed. As one might\nhave expected, <em>Irresistible<\/em> finds Stewart in familiar territory, poking\nfun at the election process and hoping to drive home a larger point about its\neffect on the general populace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Irrisisible-town-hall-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20682\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democratic campaign strategist Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell)\nfinds himself a laughing stock in his field after losing the 2016 election to\nDonald Trump. Knowing that his party\u2019s failure in the election may have\nresulted from being unable to make his candidate relatable to rural America, he\nsees a sign of hope after viewing a video on Youtube. It features Wisconsin\nfarmer and ex-military man Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) standing up for the\nrights of immigrants at a town council meeting. Zimmer convinces Hastings to run\nfor mayor as a Democratic candidate, hoping that his election to office will\nstart to turn the tide nationally. As he attempts to train the well-intentioned\nbut blunt farmer, it draws attention, including that of Zimmer\u2019s sworn enemy,\nRepublican strategist Faith Brewer (Rose Byrne). The competition gains national\nattention and more money is thrown behind the campaign from each party and\ntheir donors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early sections of the movie depict Zimmer\u2019s arrival in the\ncommunity and his inability to relate to the townspeople. Truthfully, these\nbits may be the clunkiest aspect of the feature. The protagonist\u2019s complete\ninability to relate to the locals feels a bit forced and the jokes are hit and\nmiss. Even the behavior of the locals seems stiff. In fact, the film may all be\ntoo low-key and low energy early on. The movie certainly is attempting to build\na quirky vibe to the town and its residents, but has trouble pulling it off in\nthe first act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Irrisisible-street-1024x614.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20683\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s a slow build, things do end up improving significantly\nwith the arrival of Brewer, who freely admits that she takes great joy demoralizing\nZimmer and seeing him suffer. It\u2019s fun to watch their grudges play out over the\ncourse of the campaign. Once the national parties get involved and the two go\nhead to head using full-blown but familiar political antics against each\nother\u2019s client, the jokes land and the laughs come more readily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Effective bits include an amusing series of ads for the\ncandidates, as well as the introduction of some assistants, a pollster and analytic\nspecialists (including Topher Grace and Natasha Lyonne) who seek to change the\nmindsets of voters. This leads to an amusing misread of one demographic in a\nspecific town region. And on a more serious note, the filmmaker also scores\nsome points in detailing inherent problems in the fundraising process. Co-star\nCooper also delivers an effective, heartfelt speech late in the film about the\nbroken electoral system, poking fun at elitists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Irrisisible-bakery-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20684\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, the movie also offers a strong climactic pay-off\nwhich ultimately makes up for the awkward opening act. The big election day itself\noffers unexpected and surprising moments that deliver the film\u2019s ultimate point\nhome with great effectiveness. Honestly, this is a title that will likely play\nbetter the second time around. In the end, <em>Irresistible<\/em> requires a\nlittle patience early on as it slowly develops it themes and issues. However,\nonce the election hits its stride and the movie begins firing on all cylinders,\nit surges ahead and wins the day. This is a funny and even heartfelt satire detailing\nthe depths that political campaigns will sink to in order to influence and\nsecure our vote.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This film will be available via video on demand streaming platforms Friday, June 26th.
