<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nCapital in the Twenty-First Century<\/em> \u2013 This documentary\nis based on a bestselling book by Thomas Piketty that investigate wealth and\npower through accumulation of capital and examines the negative consequences that\nsuch a system has on the world. The film goes back in history to the French\nRevolution and moves forwards through two World Wars into the modern age, documenting\ndramatic shifts in the physical world around us as well as new ideologies that\nhave resulted in the current state of affairs. Reviews were excellent for the\nnon-fiction feature. One or two didn\u2019t believe that the movie was detailed or\nspecific enough to make a strong argument. However, all others thought it was\nan insightful look at the history of capitalism and its effects on class\ndisparity around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Coma<\/em> \u2013 A massive and tragic event knocks a young architect\nunconscious. When he awakens, the lead finds himself in a new world made up of\nthe memories of various persons who also have found themselves living here. The\nlead begins to wonder if he\u2019s actually in the collected unconscious of those around\nhim. He tries to figure out the laws and rules of the land in the hopes of\nfinding a way out and back to the regular world. This foreign-language feature\nfrom Russia opened earlier in the year in Eastern Europe and is now debuting on\ndisc in North America. There aren\u2019t any reviews from the press but a few have\nappeared online from viewers in other nations. They describe it as a Russian Inception<\/em>\nand commented that while it wasn\u2019t quite as effective, it was a mind-bending\nand visually impressive adventure. It features Rinal Mukhametov and Lyubov\nAksyonova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Endless Season<\/em> \u2013 This little documentary involves\na sports fanatic who graduates from college and decides to spend an entire year\nfollowing his favorite football organization, the Philadelphia Eagles. Shot the\nyear after the team\u2019s Superbowl championship, the enthusiast travels to each and\nevery city on their schedule, showing his support and shouting down the\nfanbases of his team\u2019s rivals. The synopsis for the movie describes Eagle supporters\nas the most passionate in football and states that the movie shows their power\nand influence at each game. It also rather bluntly opines that it may be the\nlast film ever to showcase what sports fandom looks like (I think most would\nagree that as bad as things are right now, it won\u2019t be a permanent situation). There\nare currently no reviews available for the flick. However, one thinks it might\nbe exclusively for Eagles fanatics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Exit Plan<\/em> \u2013 A private investigator looking into a\ncold case decides to travel to a secretive hotel that you won\u2019t find on Priceline.\nAfter checking in, he begins to suspect that the business caters to customers\nseeking out elaborate suicide fantasies. As his work progresses, the lead\nbegins to fear for his own life and question his own perception of reality. This\nis a Danish picture that for now is being released exclusively on DVD. The\nmovie earned a few award nominations at European film festivals, but the press in\nthis part of the world didn\u2019t take to the movie. A small group called it beautifully\nshot, tense and unique. However, the majority complained that it was too\nlow-key and didn\u2019t build tension or delve deeply enough into its interesting themes.\nIt stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Tuva Novotny and Robert Aramayo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n House of Hummingbird<\/em> \u2013 Set in Seoul, South Korea in\n1994, this film involves an introverted teenager searching for happiness in her\nunpleasant life. After being ignored by family members and treated by a doctor for\nan unidentified illness, the girl attempts to find joy roaming through her community.\nAfter witnessing some unsettling things around her, the youth does find an unexpected\noutlet of support from a new teacher at her school. This little coming-of-age\nfilm has won numerous awards at film festivals and it received nothing but praise\nsince its debut from reviewers. They said that while the feature doesn\u2019t\ndeliver thrills and instead focuses on the confused inner state of its lead, it\nis a caring slice-of-life portrait of youth that stays with the viewer. The\ncast includes Park Ji-hu, Kim Sae-byeok and Lee Seung-yeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing But the Blood<\/em> \u2013 A small town reporter is\nassigned to cover the opening of a church in a small rural town. After her\narrival, the writer realizes that this particular ministry takes a more hands\non approach in passing their message onto residents. The cult starts to exert their\nextreme influence and the journalist soon realizes that all are in danger from\nthese extremist zealots. This independent horror picture hasn\u2019t been seen by\nmany critics at this time, but those who have written about the movie haven\u2019t\nbeen positive. They stated that while the concept was interesting, there were\nissues with the script. According to them, the movie doesn\u2019t really know what\nit\u2019s trying to say and resorts to ineffective shocks. Rachel Hudson, Nick Triola\nand Les Best headline the picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Resistance Fighter<\/em> \u2013 Released as Kurier<\/em> in\nits homeland, this foreign-language effort from Poland takes place during WWII\nand tells a story about the Warsaw Uprising and their conflict against\noccupying German forces. Specifically, it details the actions of Jan\nNowak-Jezioranski, who acted as a messenger between fighters on the ground and exiled\nmembers of the Polish government. The hero makes daring runs in and out of the\ncountry and tries to escape capture and execution by Nazi forces. The movie is\ncurrently debuting on DVD only so those hoping for a Blu-ray may have to wait a\nlittle longer to pick one up. There aren\u2019t any write-ups currently available,\nbut it was well regarded in its homeland and was nominated for several Polish\nFilm Awards (although it ended up losing in most categories to Oscar nominee Corpus\nChristi<\/em>). It features Philippe\nTlokinski, Julie Engelbrecht and Bradley James. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Ride Your Wave<\/em> \u2013 This animated feature from Japan\ntells the story of a young surfing enthusiast and college student who moves to\na seaside town. Not long after arriving, she falls for a local firefighter and\nthe two spend all of their free time together. But after tragedy strikes and\nher boyfriend dies at sea, the lead can\u2019t bear to ride the waves again. She\nsoon begins having visions of him in the water. Has his spirit returned or are\nthese visions all in her head? Notices were excellent for the feature. A couple\nof write-ups found it so sentimental that they couldn\u2019t get involved in the\nstory. However, the rest commented that it was all so sweet that they didn\u2019t\nmind how head over heels in love the young characters were. They also referred\nto the visuals as being impressive to behold. The Blu-ray and DVD contain both\nthe Japanese language version with English subtitles and an English-language audio\ntrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Satan\u2019s Slaves<\/em> \u2013 A cash-strapped family living in the\ncountry struggle to make ends meet after the mother comes down with a mysterious\nillness. After a few years, she finally passes away and the clan lay her to\nrest. However, when the father travels out of town to sort out legal affairs in\nthe city, the kids are visited by their deceased matriarch. They learn that their\nmother may have joined a cult before she died and has now returned to take them\naway. This Indonesian\/South Korean co-production was produced a couple of years\nago in its homeland and is debuting on disc in this part of the world. Reaction\nwas actually very positive and the movie won some awards. It has been described\nas a familiar but well-told tale with excellent cinematography and plenty of\natmosphere. It stars Tara Basro, Endy Artian and Nasar Annuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Soul Collector<\/em> \u2013 This independent horror picture from\nSouth Africa follows a cash-strapped man who inherits a farm and tries to make\na new start there with his family. Unfortunately, the old farmhand residing on\nthe property quite literally carries a nasty secret\u2026 a demon child who lives in\nthe senior\u2019s brown burlap sack. The monster demands souls and begins to\ninfluence the behavior of the new arrivals, causing tension and violence. Overall,\nresponse was positive towards this chiller. A number of reviewers commented\nthat the movie fails to scare and that it lost momentum before ending with a\nwhimper. However, more enjoyed the unique setting and thought it was creepy enough\nto recommend. The cast includes Chris April, Garth Breytenbach, Inge Beckmann,\nKeita Luna Tshamano Sebe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Swallow<\/em> \u2013 A newly pregnant housewife appears to have the\nperfect life, maintaining an immaculate home and beautiful garden. But as\nviewers enter the household, they discover that she must endure extreme expectations\nplaced upon her by her controlling husband and his even more extreme in-laws. The\nwife begins to crack and starts to display symptoms of a disorder called pica \u2013\nit involves ingesting inedible objects. This suspenseful drama impressed many\ncritics. There was a small contingent who had trouble buying into the concept and\nhad issues with the execution. Still, the majority were impressed by the lead performance\nand thought that while the movie was difficult to watch, it was disturbing.\nHaley Bennett, Austin Stowell, Elizabeth Marvel, David Rasche, Luna Lauren\nVelez and Zabryna Guevara headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are significantly fewer older films arriving on disc\nthis week, but there are some that are certainly of interest. Arrow Academy are\npremiering the award-winning Toto the Hero<\/em> (1991) on Blu-ray. This Belgian\/French\/German\nco-production involves two young babies born at the very same time and place.\nOne is raised by a wealthy family while the other has a rougher time. As an old\nman, the protagonist decides to enact a strange and elaborate plan of revenge. Through\nflashbacks, we see a surreal version of his childhood mixed with fantasy about how\nvarious opportunities were stolen from him by his competition. Of course, it\nall ends with the lead\u2019s final act of protest. You\u2019ll get a high definition\ndigital transfer of the movie, new and more accurate English subtitles, an extensive\ndocumentary on the making of the movie with the cast and crew. Additionally, it\ncomes with a piece on comic book artist Francois Schulten, whose concepts helped\ninspire the movie\u2019s production design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\nCriterion are delivering The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum<\/em> (1975) on Blu-ray. This German feature is about the incredible hardships faced by a young woman. After she spends the night with a man who later commits a terrorist act, the protagonist\u2019s quiet life and sanity falls into ruins as authorities, the media and public begin smearing her reputation, then insulting and attacking her. This film has received a new 4K digital restoration on Blu-ray (the same transfer appears on DVD also included in the release). It also comes with a 2002 interview with the directors and the cinematographer and an excerpt from a 1977 documentary on the novelist whose book was the inspiration for the film. \n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Film Movement are releasing a Blu-ray of the Oscar-nominated China\/France co-production, Shanghai Triad<\/em> (1995). It\u2019s a crime epic about a boy who is recruited by a mob organization and works his way up a syndicate in the titular city. Things take a turn when he falls for his boss\u2019s lady, a beautiful stage performer. The Blu-ray includes a trailer and a short critic analysis of the film and its hidden meanings. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino are all in on Blu-ray box sets this week. The first is\ncalled the Audie Murphy Collection (1952 \u2013 1959)<\/em> and it includes three\nflicks starring the performer. They include the westerns The Duel at Silver\nCreek<\/em> (1952), Ride a Crooked Trail<\/em> (1958) and No Name on the\nBullet<\/em> (1959). Should you pick up the set it also includes extras in the form\nof film historian audio commentaries and trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Carole Lombard Collection<\/em> I (1930 \u2013 1932)<\/em> contains\nBlu-ray of the romantic comedy Fast and Loose<\/em> (1930), Man of the\nWorld<\/em> (1931) and No Man of Her Own<\/em> (1932). Bonuses are identical to\nthe previous set. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And there\u2019s a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera with the Tony Curtis Collection (1958 \u2013 1962)<\/em> Blu-ray box. It features the rom-com The Perfect Furlough<\/em> (1958) from director Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther<\/em>, Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/em>). The set also contains the Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em>) comedy The Great Impostor<\/em> (1960) and 40 Pounds of Trouble<\/em> (1962), another comedy from Norman Jewison (Fiddler on the Roof<\/em>, Moonstruck<\/em>). This title is about a casino manager forced to juggle duties in the hotel while caring for a precocious, unwanted 5-year old guest.
