On second thought, you should probably avoid using the fermentation methods employed by the main character, as you may do yourself serious harm. Instead, just grab yourself a jar from a reputable manufacturer, sit back and have a good time with <em>An American Pickle<\/em>. It\u2019s far from faultless, but this is still a fun little flick that provides consumers with a few sharp notes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/American-Pickle-riding-with-wife-1024x623.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21022\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opening introduces viewers to Herschel Greenbaum (Seth\nRogen), a Jewish laborer in Eastern Europe. After meeting Sarah (Sarah Snook)\nand wooing her (despite their less-than-pleasant quality of life), the couple\nmarry and emigrate to America. The protagonist lands a new and lucrative job\nkilling rats with a mallet at a local pickle factory. Unfortunately, he falls\ninto a large vat and is preserved for 100 years, eventually brought back to\nlife into modern Brooklyn. Lost and alone, he is taken in by his great-grandson\nand aspiring app creator, Ben (also Seth Rogen). The gruff and aggressive\nHerschel quickly butts heads with his descendant and the relationship soon sours.\nIn fact, it turns ugly as the elder family patriarch becomes a successful street\nvender hawking, well, very fresh pickles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/American-Pickle-counting-money-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21023\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early on, the movie takes a silly tone with a rapid-fire\nbarrage of jokes. In fact, Herschel\u2019s life in the opening five minutes deliver some\nof the funniest gags in the picture. Shot in black and white, the environment\nlooks amusingly oppressive as the worker endures absurdly harsh conditions,\nparticularly while digging ditches. Later on, the character\u2019s confusion, anger and\noutmoded beliefs result in some amusingly blunt comments. In particular, a\nmodern vodka advertisement that reminds the character of his Cossack tormentors\nfrom a century ago. Additionally, plenty of the pickle-related gags earn laughs\nas Herschel decides to branch out and start an \u201corganic\u201d pickle business using\nbottles found in the trash and a makeshift brine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/American-Pickle-vodka-sign-1024x643.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21024\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As events progress and the two relatives come into more\nserious conflict, the movie begins throwing in too many added elements. When the\nolder man separates himself from Ben, hires a staff, takes to the internet,\nbecomes a media sensation and is then coaxed into making politically incorrect\ncomments, this material all feels a bit rushed and forced into the story. While\nit\u2019s admirable to try and address so many issues over its running time, some of\nthe situations are introduced and resolved too quickly. Not all of these later elements\ntransition smoothly and later sections of the film aren\u2019t as effective.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But at least Rogen does a fine job of creating two distinct\npersonalities onscreen and manages to interacting with himself convincingly.\nThe dramatic arc of the movie attempts to find a bridge between the two very\ndifferent men. Both have suffered tragic losses involving family members and the\nconceit forces them to deal with their own failings. Ben is too meek for his\nown good, while Herschel is blunt and politically incorrect in the extreme,\nwith some outdated ideas that ostracize him from the modern world. While this\nmaterial isn\u2019t handled in the most sensitive manner, at least the flick tries\nto delve a little deeper into the psyche of its protagonists.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/American-Pickle-walking-in-park-great-grandson-1024x632.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21025\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admittedly, some chunks of <em>An American Pickle<\/em> are\noverripe and taste a little unbalanced. Yet the lead performance is impressive\nand every so often there a very funny gag that hits the mark. In the end, the\noverall flavor of the film is tasty and satisfying enough to recommend and it should\nprovide ample home entertainment for anyone desiring something fresh to enjoy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This movie will be available August 6th for streaming on HBO Max.
