{"id":21146,"date":"2020-08-26T19:37:44","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T02:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/?p=21146"},"modified":"2020-08-26T19:37:44","modified_gmt":"2020-08-27T02:37:44","slug":"centigrade-doesnt-deliver-the-chills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cinemastance.com\/?p=21146","title":{"rendered":"CENTIGRADE Doesn\u2019t Deliver the Chills"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/24_0004_C-merged.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8560\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This movie from IFC Films will be available for streaming\nrental Friday August 28<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;on most platforms.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you see the words \u201cInspired by actual events\u201d written\nat the beginning of a movie without any more detail or explanation, you\u2019d be\nwise to take what you\u2019re about to see with more than a grain of salt. The new thriller\n<em>Centigrade<\/em> describes itself as such a tale that features characters\nenduring impossibly harsh conditions in the coldest of environments. Admittedly,\nthere are a couple of tense and claustrophobic moments, but so much of what occurs\nseems exaggerated and even preposterous\u2026 especially given the fact that it\u2019s\ntrying so hard to convince you of its authenticity. If you hadn\u2019t guessed by\nnow, the picture ends up being a slog that didn\u2019t end up impressing this\nreviewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/centigrade-04-fixed-1024x623.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21147\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in 2002 (when cell phone signals weren\u2019t very strong and\nwere unlikely to get you out of a situation at a remote locale), opening title\ncards explain that the following events occurred when American novelist Naomi\n(Genesis Rodriguez) embarked on a small book tour in Norway with her husband\nMatthew (Vincent Piazza). It is revealed that while traveling through the\nmountains on the way to their next tour stop, a snowstorm and icy conditions\nforced them to move to the shoulder of the road. Now buried in snow and ice,\nthey find themselves unable to escape their iced-up vehicle. Beyond having to wait\nfor help and sustain themselves with limited supplies, it appears that Naomi is\nalso more than 8-months pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movie begins with Naomi and Matthew awakening and arguing\nwith each other about their predicament and what to do next in order to get the\ndoors open. It\u2019s normal to introduce conflict into a story as early as possible,\nbut having the two leads fight and call out each other on their decision-making\nabilities in the opening scene does little to endear viewers to them. The\nsituation is already one of confusion, consternation and danger, and so the\nnastiness on display (at least early on) is entirely unnecessary. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/centigrade-02-fixed-1024x608.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21148\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s certainly not the performers fault, but the leads\naren\u2019t exceptionally well written. While one can imagine that panic and\nincreasingly cold temperatures might cause problems with motor functions, this\nis never explicitly dealt with. It is also remarkable how often the leads make\nbad decisions, only to come to the correct conclusion days later. The leads try\nto chip and punch their way through the ice, only to realize long afterward\nthat they can use their feet\/boots and other parts of the car to do the same\njob. Excuses aside, seeing as the protagonist have nothing else to do but\nexplore the vehicle, it\u2019s remarkable that they don\u2019t make any of their discoveries\nmuch earlier in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their strange behavior and fights that occasionally turn\nviolent distances viewers more and more. Naomi loses more points by initially\ninsisting they not eat food-related gifts for others. Later, with a dying\nbattery, she manages to find a phone signal and misuses the call by contacting\nher family and not mentioning where she thinks they may be stranded (if she was\ngoing to waste a call, she could have at least dialed up her agent and screamed\nat the person for sending her on a book tour to a remote area Norway in the\ndead of winter). In the end, all sympathy towards the couple decays as the days\nand, yes, weeks pass. By the time the inevitable pregnancy complications occur,\nit\u2019s all too hard to swallow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/centigrade-05-fixed-1024x581.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21149\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m guessing that I already know the story that may have\n\u201cinspired\u201d this film and it\u2019s a very, very different tale with far fewer\nexaggerations. It\u2019s a challenge to create palpable drama when everything takes\nplace in one location, but recent films like <em>7500<\/em> and <em>Greyhound<\/em>\nhave risen to the task. It\u2019s much harder to relate to these individuals and\ntheir struggles while being trapped in their car. Despite the feature\u2019s best intentions\nand hard work of the stars, <em>Centigrade<\/em> is too icy and exaggerated to truly\nchill viewers to the bone. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This movie from IFC Films will be available for streaming rental Friday August 28th&nbsp;on most platforms.
