The term\nYuppie was coined as a signifier of a person (often a businessman) living a\nlife of undeserved excess. Despite the derogatory terminology, many envied the wealth\nand power of the upper classes. Set during this era, the new drama <em>The Nest<\/em>\nfollows one such family seemingly living the good life. However, the story soon\nintroduces strife within the clan and reveals the truth behind their fortune\nand the games being played to try and keep their heads above water. This isn\u2019t\na fun tale to watch, but it is a well-performed feature that displays one\nhousehold\u2019s inevitable downward spiral. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/nest-04-party-fixed-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21293\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rory (Jude Law) is a fast-talking New York-based commodities\nbroker living in the countryside. One day, he tells his wife Allison (Carrie\nCoon) that he has been given an incredible employment opportunity at his old\nLondon-based firm, insisting that they pack up and leave the US for England.\nShe initially resists leaving, but ultimately agrees to relocating. The entire family,\nincluding children Benjamin (Charlie Shotwell) and Samantha (Oona Roche) quickly\nfind themselves living at an impressive but isolated manor in Surrey. Rory\nspends lavishly, purchasing a horse and building a stable to help his wife with\nher career. However, their spacious new abode quickly begins having a negative\neffect on the family. The kids don\u2019t like the house, the money begins to run\ndry and Allison starts resenting her husband for taking them far away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/nest-05-hug-fixed-1024x618.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21294\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Viewers should be aware that this movie does not feature the\nmost likable of protagonists. While Rory is charming and upbeat one the surface,\ndeep down Rory he\u2019s terrible. He twists the arm of his family to join him\nabroad and puts on airs at work while constantly trying to broker deals that\nwill keep him solvent for another few months. Naturally, his gift of gab only\ngets him so far and the family find themselves sinking further and further into\nthe mire. Although Allison is shown in a more sympathetic light, she isn\u2019t a\nwhole lot better, ultimately taking part in the charade (then complaining about\nit afterwards) and focusing most of her personal attention on her horse instead\nof her kids.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/nest-03-stairs-fixed-1024x583.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21295\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a slow and ugly descent, but it does provide a lot for the actors to feast on. As Rory\u2019s deals go south and his fa\u00e7ade breaks down, it allows co-star Law to plumb the depths of his character\u2019s flaws. The same goes for Carrie Coon as Allison becomes increasingly snarky, eventually leading to public arguments including a wince-inducing exchange at a business dinner. By this point in the story, the couple can barely stand to be in the same room with one another. Thankfully, the movie does gives viewers the opportunity to get inside their heads and understand the reasons for living beyond their means. Rory does appear to be angry and ashamed by his modest background. And since everyone else seems to be keeping up false appearances, he sees no reason why he shouldn\u2019t do the same and enjoy great fortune and wealth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, should you ever go house hunting, remember that\npurchasing a home and living a lifestyle that you can\u2019t afford may cause your\nentire world to crumble. It\u2019s something of an obvious moral, but it certainly\nis true for many who spent their way through the overly extravagant 80s. In the\nend, <em>The Nest<\/em> may not be an upbeat effort and it doesn\u2019t necessarily\ntell you anything you don\u2019t already know about its selfish characters, but the\nsolid, convincing portrayals of some unpleasant people make this an intriguing\ndrama. &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This film will be released in select theaters September 18th and will be available to rent at home on most platforms November 17th.
