Blade: The Iron Cross<\/em> \u2013 Believe it or not, there have\nbeen 13 films in the long-running Puppet Master<\/em> horror series. This\ntitle marks feature number 14 and is set in Germany near the end of World War\nII. The story follows the dangerous little puppets called Blade who possesses a\nhook for a hand. The figure teams up with a journalist to eliminate a\ndiabolical Nazi scientist. This feature hasn\u2019t received many reviews but has\nbeen streaming on Amazon Prime since the summer and is only now arriving on\ndisc. There have been a few write-ups from horror fans that have appeared\nonline which are mixed-negative. They call it a run-of-the-mill franchise entry\nthat is generally forgettable. The cast includes Tania Fox, Vincent Cusimano, Roy Abramsohn and Bobby\nReed.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBook of Monsters<\/em> \u2013 A young woman\u2019s 18th<\/sup>\nbirthday goes off the rails when she holds a party just as monstrous creatures\nbegin to descend on her house. The teenage protagonist and her guests must\nfight the invaders off before they get devoured. This low-budget UK productions\ngot some decent reviews from the press. There were a few who complained that\nthe story was too simple and that the characters weren\u2019t very distinctive and\nthat the script could have developed them further. However, most stated that\nthe movie exuded a nostalgic 80s vibe with some gooey practical creature\neffects and described it as a reasonably entertaining and funny B-movie with\nits tongue planted firmly in cheek. The movie is also available on Amazon Prime\nand features Lyndsey Craine, Michaela Longden, Lizzie Aaryn-Stanton and Daniel Thrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCharlie\u2019s Christmas Wish<\/em> \u2013 This family drama involves\na sergeant being sent home from duty after being diagnosed with PTSD. Upon his\narrival, he is surprised to discover his wife and child catering to a new\nfamily member\u2026. a little pooch. The protagonist attempts to form a relationship\nwith the animal while reconnecting with other returned veterans. In order to\ntry and find a new purpose in life, he sets out to help those in his circle\nenjoy a festive holiday. This film is premiering on disc and at present is only\nbeing released on DVD. There aren\u2019t any reviews available for it either, so\nit\u2019s hard to say whether those who pick it up cold will be receiving a sweet gift\nor a lump of coal. Diane Ladd, Aiden Turner, Toni Hudson, John O\u2019Hurley, Vernon\nWells and Richard Tyson headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\nContracts<\/em> \u2013 A masked assassin targets another group\nof assassins in this ultra-low budget indie martial arts feature, made by a\nprofessional stuntman. That one sentence is essentially the entire plot,\nleading to a series of confrontations and brutal fights between the mysterious\nkiller and a group of equally skilled foes. This feature played at the After\nDark Film Festival in Toronto last year. Reviews have essentially said that\nthere is barely a plot and the writing and acting are like something out of a cheesy\nsoap opera. However, they admitted that despite these shortcomings, the fights\nthemselves are jaw-dropping and better than many you\u2019d see in a Hollywood film.\nSo, if you just want to see a series of incredible brawls between some\nunintentionally goofy exposition, it may satisfy. Margaryta Soldatova, Kyle Stewart, Christena Gaunce and writer\/director\nAlex Chung play a few of the butt-kickers.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDave Not Coming Back<\/em> \u2013 Deep-water scuba diving is the subject of this documentary. Specifically, two men obsessed with the sport. This pair become known for breaking a depth record in 1994 by reaching the bottom of a South African cave called Boesmansgat. It seems that while completing the incredible task years ago, the pair noted a body resting on the floor of the underwater cave. This feature tells how, decades later, they assembled a team to repeat the dangerous dive and retrieve the person\u2026 as well as the tragedy that followed. This feature appears to be premiering on disc and on streaming platforms this week, so reviews will likely appear in the coming days. A few articles have appeared in countries, which are positive and suggest it has a chilling ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\nGuest House<\/em> \u2013 A couple get engaged and find the home\nof their dreams. After making the purchase, they become aware of the major drawback\u2026\na man who lives at the property\u2019s guesthouse. He turns out to be a party animal\nwho is none-to-pleased about the change in ownership. A turf war breaks out\nbetween the couple and tenant with outrageous consequences. This comedy ran at\na few drive-ins earlier in the year, but it didn\u2019t play well with critics. They\ncalled it an unfunny and tired stoner flick that lazily rehashed jokes seen in\nhundreds of other titles of its ilk. These write-ups ultimately suggested that\nthe movie was a chore to sit through. The cast includes Pauly Shore, Mike\nCastle, Aimee Teegarden, Steve-O, Billy Zane, Mikaela Hoover, Charlotte\nMcKinney, Lou Ferrigno, Chris Kattan and Bobby Lee.<\/p>\n\n\n\nI Met a Girl<\/em> \u2013 This Australian romantic-comedy\nfollows an aspiring musician suffering from schizophrenia. Inspired to express\nhis feelings to the woman of his dreams, he sets out on a cross-country journey\nfrom Perth to Sydney in order to track the woman down. However, events begin to\nsuggest that this female may not be real and simply a figment of his\nimagination. Response towards this feature has been middling. Many stated that\nthe cast were sweet and charming to watch and that the movie handled the\ncharacter\u2019s mental illness in a surprisingly considerate manner. For some, this\nwas good enough to earn the picture a modest recommendation. But others\ncomplained that the actors couldn\u2019t make up for a weak script and that the\npicture simply wasn\u2019t memorable. It features Brenton Thwaites and Lily Sullivan.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLove Express: The Disappearance of Walerian Borowczyk<\/em>\n\u2013 For those unfamiliar with Polish director Walerian Borowczyk, this filmmaker\ncaused a stir in arthouse circles during the 1970s with his controversial,\nerotically-charged and sometimes explicit shorts and features. This documentary\ndissects and reappraises his movies, examining his influence on others, as well\nas making a case for artistic freedom. It includes discussions with fans like\nTerry Gilliam, Neil Jordan and Andrzej Wajda. Response towards this non-fiction\neffort was good, although the articles did present some caveats. Reviews noted\nthat the feature didn\u2019t make its case as effectively as it could have and stuck\nto a surface level exploration of the filmmaker. Still, the consensus was that\nthis served as an effective primer to a filmmaker who may have been\nundervalued. <\/p>\n\n\n\nMarona\u2019s Fantastic Tale<\/em> \u2013 A mixed-breed dog with a\nbig heart is hit by a car at the beginning of this animated co-production from\nFrance, Romania and Belgium. As she lays on the ground wounded and alone, her\nmind takes her through several important memories from her long life. We see\nthe various owners she has loved and individual moments of happiness and joy as\nthe dog struggles to hang on to life. While it probably isn\u2019t light\nentertainment for kids, the feature did receive excellent marks from the press.\nOne reviewer did complain about the trippy, psychedelic visuals and couldn\u2019t\nengage with the story as a result. All others stated that this was a unique and\nheartfelt movie with incredible images that would also tug at the heartstrings\nand ultimately make an emotional impact. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\nMaybe Next Year<\/em> \u2013 Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles are\nsome of the most passionate and extreme sports enthusiasts in the entire world.\nThe makers of this documentary followed four of these characters during the\nlows and eventual highs of the team\u2019s 2017 Superbowl-winning season. Viewers\nwill see all of their eccentricities on full display as they cheer on their\nteam week after week. There aren\u2019t a whole lot of reviews yet for this title,\nbut a few essays have popped up online. One states that the movie would have\nbeen better to focus instead on just how bizarre and abnormal the behavior of\nthese devotees was. The others were upbeat, suggesting that anyone who loves a\nteam would be able to empathize with the struggles of these spirited superfans.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\nMetamorphosis<\/em> \u2013 Also known as Byeonshin<\/em>, this\nSouth Korean chiller involves an evil spirit that worms its way into a family\nunit. One member of the clan becomes possessed, causing chaos and placing the\nothers in danger. They soon decide that an exorcism may be the only solution.\nThis foreign-language picture won a few awards in its homeland for its\ntechnical accomplishments, but critics haven\u2019t been nearly as kind about the dramatic\nelements of the picture. A few did enjoy the slick and polished the presentation\nand felt that the atmosphere was enough to justify a recommendation. However, the\nmajority groused that the film was too long and ultimately veered into\nmelodrama, lessening its impact and effectiveness on viewers. Sung-Woo Bae, Dong-il\nSung, Young-nam Jang and Hye-jun Kim headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMortal<\/em> \u2013 A young man hiding in the western wilderness\nof Norway makes a shocking discovery and unwittingly gains the powers of some\nlegendary Norse gods. After an accident involving these unexpected skills\nresults in a death, the lead is arrested. He befriends a police psychologist\nand the two decide to make a break for it in order to find out more about his new\nskillset. This Scandinavian\/US co-production split critics. About half of the\nthem said that while oddly paced, the leads were likable and engaging enough to\nearn the flick a pass. Just as many complained that the screenplay needed a\nrewrite to fix its tonal issues and asserted that the movie never reached its\npotential. The cast includes Nat Wolff, Priyanka Bose, Iben Akerlie and Arthur Hakalahti.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMulan<\/em> \u2013 With little notice, it appears that Disney\nhas announced the Blu-ray and DVD release of their recent live-action remake of\nthe hugely popular animated film (the movie has also been on the Disney+ streaming\nservice for a few months now). The story follows a young woman in China who\ndisguises herself as a male warrior in the hopes of saving her ailing father\nfrom being drafted into the military. She soon finds herself battling invaders\nand trying to saving her country. Reaction towards the feature was reasonable\nbut unexceptional. Many members of the press called it an impressive-to-look-at\nbut watered-down retelling that was dramatically stiff and, in the end, forgettable.\nStill, the majority said that while all of the elements may not have come\ntogether perfectly, it was still an impressive spectacle that would please\nfamilies. It stars Yifei Liu, Donnie Yen, Li Gong, Jet Li and Jason Scott Lee.<\/p>\n\n\n\nA Rainy Day in New York<\/em> \u2013 The latest from\nwriter\/director Woody Allen involves a pair of college students who decide to\nhead out to Manhattan for the day. One of them is interviewing a famous film\ndirector for her school paper, while her boyfriend hopes to show his girlfriend\naround town, gamble a bit and try to avoid his family. Nothing goes according\nto plan, the two get separated and both end up having different experiences in\nthe city. This comedic effort received middling reviews from critics. Roughly\nhalf of them admitted it wasn\u2019t one of the filmmaker\u2019s best, but was still an\namusing confection with a few amusing scenes. Just as many didn\u2019t think that\nthe casting and onscreen chemistry worked and suggested the movie didn\u2019t reach\nthe heights of other Allen titles. Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Liev\nSchreiber, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Rebecca Hall and Diego Luna headline the\nfeature.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSpontaneous<\/em> \u2013 This film puts a unique spin on teen\nromance. Kids at a local high school begin exploding without warning and are\nimmediately quarantined together. While they wait for a cure and try not to\nspontaneously combust, a student decides to try and overcome his shyness and\nforge a relationship with the girl of his dreams before it\u2019s too late. This odd\nrom-com\/fantasy\/sci-fi flick was well received and earned a great deal of\npositive write-ups. One or two thought that the filmmakers could have done even\nmore with the concept. However, everyone else praised the performances and described\nthe feature as a sharp and at times charged examination of pains of falling in\nlove. It looks like the movie is arriving exclusively on DVD this week and a\nBlu-ray will follow. It features Charlie Plummer, Katherine Langford, Piper\nPerabo and Rob Huebel.<\/p>\n\n\n\nWhere She Lies<\/em> \u2013 This documentary tells the story of\na woman in Tennessee who was assaulted as a young woman. After giving birth to\na child, the new mother was ultimately informed that the baby was stillborn.\nDecades later, the lady\u2019s mother gives a strange deathbed confession that\ncontradicts everything. It soon becomes clear that this infant may have, in\nfact, not passed away and was instead given up for adoption. The filmmakers\nfollow their subject as she attempts to get the full story, come to terms with\nwhat happened and decide whether or not she should try to contact her\noffspring. This movie is being released on disc and on streaming platforms at\nthe same time. As a result, no one has seen it yet and there is no consensus on\nthe quality of this documentary. <\/p>\n\n\n\nBlasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt isn\u2019t just a busy time for new releases. This week also\nsees a huge number of older features being upgraded and released on Blu-ray.\nArrow Video are re-releasing a box set called the American Horror Project Volume\n1<\/em>, which contains several low-budget genre films. The titles included are Malatesta\u2019s\nCarnival of Blood<\/em> (1973), The Premonition<\/em> (1976) and The Witch\nWho Came from the Sea<\/em> (1976). This set sold out when it was initially\nreleased 4 years ago but is now being reissued. Around the same time, Arrow\nalso put out a limited edition Herschell Gordon Lewis collection. They\u2019re now putting\nout another edition of the Blu-ray package. This standard Special Edition is called\nThe Herschell Gordon Lewis Feast<\/em> and is a 7-disc set that includes the\nB-movie classics Blood Feast<\/em> (1963), Two Thousand Maniacs!<\/em>\n(1964), as well as some other so-bad-they\u2019re-good features from the filmmaker\u2019s\ncatalog. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAdditionally, Arrow are releasing a Blu-ray of the Japanese\ncyberpunk flick, Burst City<\/em> (1982). This tale is set in on the outskirts\nof Tokyo where punk rockers and biker gangs set up a protest to stop the construction\nof a nuclear powerplant. However, they have to square off against Yakuzi\nindustrialists in control of the project in order to stop it from being built.\nThe movie comes with a commentary featuring an expert on Japanese cinema, an\nhour-long interview with the director, a 27-minute talk about the production,\nas well as publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\nShout! Factory are delivering some Hammer Studios horror\nthis week. The Brides of Dracula<\/em> (1960) involves a lovely young woman\ntraveling in Eastern Europe. When she finds herself stranded at a castle, she\nmeets various locals with sinister backgrounds and motives. The lead ends up\nteaming with Van Helsing (played by Peter Cushing) in order to stop the imminent\nthreat. This Collector\u2019s Edition Blu-ray features a 2K scan of the feature in\ntwo different aspect ratios, as well as a film historian audio commentary, new\nspecials on the director and filmmaking team, a lengthy making-of, trailers,\nstills, radio spots and much more!<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou can also pick up How to Make a Monster<\/em> (1958) on Blu-ray. This was supposed to be out many months ago, but its release was delayed. It\u2019s about a horror make-up artist who decides to get revenge on the studio bosses who fired him by using the executive\u2019s biggest stars and seemingly turning them into unwitting, murderous creatures via hypnosis. The movie has received a 2K scan and comes with two film expert commentaries that provide background information on the production. You\u2019ll also get a special on the movie\u2019s producer, as well as a Q&A with actors from the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWar of the Colossal Beast<\/em> (1958) is a sequel to the\n1957 B-movie The Amazing Colossal Man<\/em> about an army colonel who grows\nuncontrollably after being irradiated by a nuclear blast. He returns in this\nfollow-up in an even more demented state, escaping from government officials\nand wreaking havoc on nearby cities. This title has also been given a new 2K\nscan and arrives with a film historian audio track, an alternate ending, a\nspecial on writer\/director\/producer Bert I. Gordon (who also gave up Attack\nof the Puppet People<\/em>, The Food of the Gods <\/em>and Empire of the Ants<\/em>)\nas well as a theatrical trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nKino are debuting some remarkable titles on Blu-ray too. Back\nin the days of VHS, a really popular cult flick was Amazon Women on the Moon<\/em>\n(1987) a wild and raunchy comedy featuring loads of sketches inspired by programs\nyou might see on late-night TV. It was not a success during its initial release\nbut quickly developed a cult following due to some standout bits, including\n\u201cMondo Condo\u201d which features Arsenio Hall being attacked by his own condominium,\n\u201cSon of the Invisible Man\u201d (a comedic sequel to the horror classic), a\nhilarious show posing ridiculous solutions to unsolved mysteries called\n\u201cBullshit or Not?\u201d, as well as \u201cReckless Youth\u201d which recreates social hygiene\nfilms from the 1930s. The character of Don \u201cNo Soul\u201d Simmons, who appears\nthroughout, also stands as a highlight. <\/p>\n\n\n\nNot all of the sketches are amazing, but it\u2019s pretty solid\nin general. Many found it edgier and funnier than anything on Saturday Night\nLive<\/em>. The film has never been released on Blu-ray and is now debuting with\na film historian audio track, a documentary on the production featuring\ninterviews with producer\/co-director John Landis and co-director Joe Dante,\ndeleted scenes, outtakes, newly discovered outtakes from Joe Dante\u2019s personal\narchive (including his Reckless Youth<\/em> segment presented as originally\nintended) and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you enjoy Richard Pryor comedies, the distributor is\nreleasing Bustin\u2019 Loose<\/em> (1981) on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about an ex-con\nassisting a group of special education students on a trip from Philadelphia to\nthe Pacific Northwest. This disc includes a movie expert commentary as well as\nradio spots and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd those who enjoy Clint Eastwood flicks are also hitting\nthe jackpot this week with the release of a trio of Blu-rays featuring the\nstar. The Beguiled<\/em> (1971), a Civil War drama in which a soldier finds\nhimself under the care of dangerous young women, has been newly restored in 2K.\nIt comes with a film critic audio track, a featurette on the movie, the trailer\nwith comments from filmmaker and fan John Landis alongside other promo\nmaterials. The Eiger Sanction<\/em> (1975) features Eastwood as a government\nassassin taking on a dangerous mission in the Swiss Alps. This title has also\nreceived a 2K restoration and arrives with new film historian commentary, an\ninterview with co-star Reiner Schone, archival interviews with cast members, a\npromo reel for the movie, TV and radio spots and plenty more. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAdditionally, Kino are presenting Play Misty for Me<\/em>\n(1971) on Blu-ray. This feature marked Eastwood\u2019s directorial debut. He stars\nas a disc jockey who begins being stalked by an obsessive fan. This disc also\npresents the movie with a new and improved 2K image, another audio track with\ntrivia from an expert on the movie, a video essay on the title, a documentary\nabout the movie, a featurette on the production, a trailer with comments from\ndirector and fan Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City<\/em>), as well as all kinds\nof promo materials and other bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCriterion are releasing the drama Girlfriends <\/em>(1978) on\nBlu-ray. This feature tells the story of a young woman and aspiring\nphotographer trying to make ends meet in New York City after her best friend\nsuddenly leaves the apartment to be married. The picture was nominated for\nseveral awards including a Golden Globe and arrives on disc with a 4K\nrestoration and transfer supervised by director Claudia Weill and the\ncinematographer. It also comes with several interviews including two with\nWeill, another with a couple of cast members, and a discussion with the\nscreenwriter. Another bonus is two short films ifrom the moviemaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\nParamount are reaching into their back catalog for some new\nBlu-rays. This week the titles receiving high-definition upgrades are The\nOdd Couple II<\/em> (1998), The Original Kings of Comedy<\/em> (2000) and The\nStooge<\/em> (1951).<\/p>\n\n\n\nB-movie fans can pick up a new Double Feature Blu-ray from\nDark Force Entertainment that includes the flicks Hollywood High<\/em> (1976) and\nTeenage Mother<\/em> (1967).<\/p>\n\n\n\nFull Moon Features are a little independent outfit created\nby Charles Band. For several decades, they have been producing and releasing\nfeatures (including the Puppet Master<\/em> series, which has a new release\nthis week). They\u2019re upgrading many of their classic titles to Blu-ray with special\nVHS Retro Packaging. These discs all cost less than $10 too, making them\nappealing to anyone who remembers these genre features. The titles arriving\nthis week are Tourist Trap<\/em> (1979), the comedy Cannibal Women in the\nAvocado Jungle of Death<\/em> (1989), Creepozoids<\/em> (1987), Dark Angel:\nThe Ascent<\/em> (1994), Laserblast <\/em>(1978), Meridian<\/em> (1990), Slave\nGirls from Beyond Infinity <\/em>(1987), Sorority Babes in the Slimeball\nBowl-o-rama<\/em> (1988) and Robot Wars<\/em> (1993).<\/p>\n\n\n\nMondo Macabro is presenting a European erotic shocker on\nBlu-ray. Seven Women for Satan <\/em>(1976) is about a man who hunts down naked\nwomen on his estate. It was banned for a few years in its home country. For the\nBlu-ray release, the feature has been given a 4K transfer. It also comes with\ndeleted scenes, an extended cut and interviews with the director and a cast\nmember.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThose who are taken with Japanese monster movies can now\npick up the Kaiju Clash Double Feature<\/em> Blu-ray courtesy of SRS Cinema.\nThe disc includes Reigo: King of the Sea Monsters<\/em> (2005) and its sequel,\nRaiga: God of the Monsters<\/em> (2009) in which a giant, Godzilla-like\ncreature attacks various cities across the country as well as ships off the\ncoast in the sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFinally, Warner Archive have some made-to-order discs coming\nyour way. The first is a Blu-ray of Tennessee Johnson<\/em> (1942) a biopic\nabout Andrew Johnson, the first US President to be impeached. They are also\nputting out several DVDs too, including the Bette Davis drama, The Little\nFoxes<\/em> (1941), The Pride of the Yankees<\/em> (1942) with Gary Cooper and Stella\nDallas<\/em> (1937) starring Barbara Stanwyck. You can also order another Gary\nCooper feature called The Westerner<\/em> (1940) and an early adaptation of Wuthering\nHeights<\/em> (1939).<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHere are some new features that might impress youngsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
