While pictures certainly play a part in the new feature <em>Sound of Metal<\/em>, this drama focuses on a protagonist whose life revolves around sound and what happens when that essential part of his life is suddenly taken from him. It\u2019s a heavy and occasionally draining drama, but one with exceptional performances that are likely to be recognized during awards season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Sound-of-Metal-drumming-ots-1024x568.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21693\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) and his girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke)\nare heavy metal musicians touring the country in an RV and playing shows in\nvarious clubs. When the percussionist begins to experience hearing loss, he\nvisits a doctor. Upset by the prognosis and the costs involved in receiving an\nelaborate procedure to help with the condition, Ruben tries to continue on but\nit too difficult to continue. Lou insists that her boyfriend check into a facility\nin order to come to grips with the problem. Concerned about being separated\nfrom his significant other, Ruben is initially resistant to the idea. Facility\nmanager Joe (Paul Raci) attempts to help the musician come to terms and accept\nhis condition, but the lead still hopes to repair his hearing and return to his\nold life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sound-of-metal-discussion-1024x558.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21692\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Star Riz Ahmed is a talented actor who has made an\nimpression in recent films like <em>Nightcrawler<\/em> and <em>The Sisters Brothers<\/em>,\nbut he is particularly strong in this leading role. One imagines that it must\nbe a real challenge to accurately depict the feelings of being suddenly deaf\nand finding himself completely off-balance as a result. However, the actor hits\nthe right notes throughout as Ruben attempts to deal with the situation and even\ntry to solve it, only to hit roadblock after roadblock along the way. This\nisn\u2019t a big or showy performance, but a very believable and authentic one that\nclearly displays the internal struggle that the character is going through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to property define what the character is\nexperiencing, the film uses audio in fascinating ways. It often cuts away from\nthe normal sounds present in the streets to muffled tones as Ruben would hear\nthem and shows his difficulty as he attempts to decipher words and noises. Intermittently,\nwe are forced to strain to hear those speaking to him just as he does and the\neffect helps viewers relate to his situation and the challenges and\nfrustrations involved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sound-of-metal-headphones-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21694\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, his transition into the facility is a rough one,\nultimately leading to plenty of internal and external conflict. The movie\ndoesn\u2019t try to solve every problem that Ruben encounters, but does show all\nthat is involved in restructuring one\u2019s life. Admittedly, the pacing does slow\ndown during the middle of the film as the lead begins to interact with other\nresidents at the facilty. These sequences don\u2019t offer the same kind of drama as\nthe film does during the opening of the story, but is still interesting to\nwatch. And even more authenticity is lent to the proceedings when the protagonist\ndecides to return to the regular world and reconnect with his significant other.\nRather than wrap tie things up cleanly, the movie instead focuses on giving its\nlead its character new perspective after everything that he has endured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/sound-of-metal-upset-1024x548.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21695\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an interesting and compassionate story that benefits greatly from the exceptional lead performance, which feels like a very accurate portrayal of a man going through a momentous life change. <em>Sound of Metal<\/em> may not be loud and brash, or spend as much time in the clubs as one might expect, but it still manages to pack an emotional wallop over the course of its running time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This film will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime December 4th.
