Disney+ is certainly taking this into\nconsideration with their family comedy, <em>Godmothered<\/em>. Call this reviewer\na Grinch, but his festive spirit can only go so far. This title offers a\nchuckle or two, but otherwise doesn\u2019t make much of an impression and feels like\na Disney equivalent of a Hallmark made-for-cable movie. While it may be\nwatchable enough for those simply looking to kill a couple of hours, as written\nthis movie doesn\u2019t do much to truly captivate or enchant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Godmothered-01-Fixed-1024x622.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21709\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eleanor (Jillian Bell) is a na\u00efve fairy\ngodmother-in-training from a faraway land who learns from her instructor Moira\n(Jane Curtin) that the general public no longer believe in magic. In fact, it\u2019s\nso bad that their branch is about to be closed down. Determined to prove that\npeople do need fairies, Eleanor decides to go rogue. She finds a letter written\nby a youngster and travels to Boston to locate and assist the author. However,\nthe protagonist soon discovers that girl who wrote the letter, Makenzie Walsh (Isla\nFisher), has grown up. The woman is a widow who works as a struggling TV\njournalist while scrambling to raise two children (Jillian Shea Spaeder and Willa Skye). Mackenzie has given up on a\nfairy tale life, but Eleanor still sees this as an opportunity to help them all\nfulfil their dreams. However, the godmother\u2019s magic powers aren\u2019t well honed,\nresulting in some accidental spectacles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a reasonable enough concept and there is plenty of\npotential in placing an innocent and well-intentioned fairy in a modern and\ngritty environment. A funny tug-of-war could have ensued between herself and\nthe cynical (and perhaps even dangerous) people she encounters. Unfortunately,\nthe movie never really approaches the story in a way that would maximize its true\npotential. Makenzie and the family are in a funk due to their tragic loss, but\nthe story doesn\u2019t put them in as bad a situation as it could have. In fact, the\nbrood live in an impressive downtown home that most would be thrilled to reside\nin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Godmothered-02-Fixed-1024x656.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21710\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order to raise Mackenzie\u2019s spirits, Eleanor ends up\nattempting to set the reporter up with a friendly co-worker who has a crush on\nher. Additionally, she helps one daughter with remarkable singing talent to overcome\nher fear of performing in public. In general, the dramatic stakes feel pretty\nlow. Of course, this would be forgivable if the gags worked, but most revolve\naround the wannabe fairy-godmother behaving in an overly dim and confused\nmanner. Bell has plenty of comedic talent and manages to sell a few jokes\ninvolving spells gone wrong (mostly involving things, well, exploding). It\u2019s\nalso amusing to see her decked out in an elaborate fairy dress. But overall, the\nscript asks this character to behave too densely and even the flick\u2019s slapstick\nsight gags aren\u2019t outrageous or memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the cast are appealing and do their best with what\nthey\u2019re given, they really can\u2019t generate any spark from this generic story. Even\nthe romance between Mackenzie and her co-worker doesn\u2019t offer a lot of onscreen\nchemistry or tension. Instead, events proceed in a routine, safe and\npredictable manner. Just because this is a family movie doesn\u2019t mean that there\ncan\u2019t be some tension or drama, but after a while there\u2019s little going on here\nthat requires the full attention or concentration of the viewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Godmothered-03-Fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21711\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the end, <em>Godmother<\/em> wastes some very talented\nperformers and doesn\u2019t make the most of its intriguing concept. Each story beat\nplays out like every other TV-movie of its kind, sadly resulting in a bland movie.\nThe fairy in this Disney story may indeed make the dreams of the human\ncharacters come true, but while it is unfurling its magic does little to\nsurprise or charm viewers. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This film will be available to stream December 4th on Disney+.
