<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n400 Bullets<\/em> \u2013 This independently-produced war movie\ninvolves a Gurkha soldier guarding a remote British outpost in Afghanistan. When\na panicked official arrives claiming he is being hunted by a group of rogue\nspecial ops and the Taliban, the protagonist decides to take him in. The two find\nthemselves under attack from outside forces and must do all they can to survive\nthe onslaught. This film was picked up for distribution by Shout! Factory and\nappears to be debuting on disc. There aren\u2019t many reviews available just yet,\nbut those that have appeared online have been reasonable. They suggest that while\nthe characters may be a little underdeveloped, the action and hand-to-hand fight\nscenes are well-handled and impressive. The movie stars Jean-Paul Ly, Andrew\nLee Potts and James Warren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After the Reign<\/em> \u2013 A social media prankster is the protagonist\nof this dark comedy. The narrative follows the character\u2019s rise to prominence pulling\nincreasingly edgy stunts and hoaxes that eventually land him in legal trouble.\nAfter being arrested and incarcerated for his gags, his online following explodes.\nThe protagonist becomes a popular hardcore rapper upon his release, taking on the\nstage name, Lil Tito. Unfortunately, his obsession with maintaining the\nattention of the public leads him down a dark path when his fans turn on him. This\nfeature is premiering on disc, so as of right now there are no notices\navailable for it. Viewers curious about the movie will have to go in cold. It\nfeatures Rene Rosado, Lisa Roumain, Tiffany\nDaniels and Scotty Tovar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n All My Life<\/em> \u2013 The lives of a happy young engaged couple\nare upended when the groom is diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Upset at\nthe prognosis and the fact they likely won\u2019t have enough time to celebrate their\nupcoming marriage, friends and family decide to team up and help the couple\nrealize their dream wedding. Response from the press was split, although the\nmovie received a few more positive write-ups than negative ones. Those who disliked\nit said that the story contained little in the way of dramatic tension and said\nit resorted to mushy hokum to elicit empathy on the part of the viewer. Slightly\nmore admitted that it less-than-subtle, but still liked the characters enough\nto recommend the film. The cast includes Jessica Rothe, Harry Shum Jr., Marielle Scott, Chrissie Fit and Jay Pharoah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Aragne: Sign of Vermillion<\/em> \u2013 Anime enthusiasts may be\ncurious about this 2018 effort from Japan that is finally being released in North\nAmerica. The story involves a young woman living in an apartment frightened by\nnews of a series of murders occurring in her neighborhood. She begins seeing disturbing\nvisions of worms, moths and beetles and tries to figure out how these images\nand the crimes she\u2019s hearing about are intertwined. Despite its limited release,\nthe movie has received a few screenings at places like the Fantasia International\nFilm Festival. Most of those who have saw it described the film as visually interesting\nand intriguing, although they did warn that the story eventually runs out of gas\nand that the ending was a little disappointing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Crazy Samurai: 410 vs. 1<\/em> \u2013 A master samurai at odds\nwith a disgraced dojo is told to visit the establishment for a duel with the\ninstitute\u2019s leader. Unfortunately, the protagonist walks into a deadly trap, as\nthe entire membership attacks the surprised visitor. Completely alone, he must\nfend them off and survive the ordeal. The entire story and battle are photographed\nusing a single 77-minute take. Alas, critics weren\u2019t as taken by this Japanese foreign-language\nfeature as they wanted to be. A small group of them were so impressed by the physical\nfeats on display that they forgave the film\u2019s storytelling issues. However,\nmost thought that in spite of the original concept and impressive choreography,\nthe experiment didn\u2019t work and the action ultimately became dull and exhausting.\nIt stars Tak Sakaguchi and Kento\nYamazaki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fatale<\/em> \u2013 In this thriller, a successful sports agent makes\nthe mistake of cheating on his wife with a woman he meets in a bar. After their\none-night stand, he learns that she is a police detective working a case and\nthat he has now embroiled himself in. As he tries to salvage his personal\nrelationships and figure out what\u2019s going on, he begins to suspect that he is actually\nbeing used and manipulated by the sinister cop. Reviewers were lukewarm on this\nfeature, with the majority of write-ups being negative. Those who gave it a\npass called the movie cheesy fun and a guilty pleasure. Yet the overall\nconsensus was that the picture was a tedious, eye-rolling effort that didn\u2019t\neven provide the B-movie thrills it promised. The cast includes Hilary Swank, Michael\nEaly, Mike Colter, Danny Pino and Tyrin Turner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n From Liberty to Captivity<\/em> \u2013 Pennsylvania\u2019s sex\ntrafficking criminal underworld is the subject of this feature, which details\nthe many problems the region is dealing with in regards to this horrible crime.\nThe filmmakers contrast how the state once represented the fight for freedom\nand now is one of the worst and hardest hit areas with many terrible cases\nbeing reported. The filmmakers share the stories of victims and survivors and\nwhat needs to be done in order to reverse these trends. The movie began making\nthe rounds on the festival circuit with some screenings in 2019, but the pandemic\nappears to have slowed down its release. It is now arriving on disc for those\nwho want to catch up with the movie. At this time, there aren\u2019t any write-ups available\nfor the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Half Brothers<\/em> \u2013 This comedy\/drama begins with a\nMexican aviation executive being told by his ailing dad that he has a\nhalf-brother living in America. Not only that, but his relation is a free\nspirit living a completely different lifestyle than the buttoned-down protagonist.\nWanting to know how this could have happened, the lead and his newfound\nrelation head out on a comedic road trip, getting to know each other while tracing\nthe path their father took from Mexico to the US. Reviewers weren\u2019t overly positive\nabout the movie. A small percentage commented that its heart was in the right\nplace and that the flick offered a few chuckles. However, the majority thought\nthat many of the gags didn\u2019t land and that the broad comedic bits resorted to using\ntoo many stereotypes. It features Jos\u00e9 Z\u00fa\u00f1iga, Hayes Hargrove, Vincent Spano\nand Luis Gerardo M\u00e9ndez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Libert\u00e9<\/em> \u2013 A group of extreme libertines in France are\nexpelled from their country. Concerned about their own safety, they travel to\nGermany and try to convince a free-thinking Duke to take them in and allow them\nto continue their debauched interests. In order to impress him, they conduct a graphic,\nsadomasochistic orgy in the forest. This foreign-language international coproduction\nwon awards over the past couple of years at various film festivals, including\nCannes, where it earned a special Jury Prize. It has taken a little longer finding\na distributor in North America, but is now arriving on disc. Critics had had a\nwide variety of reactions to it, although most responses have been positive.\nThese reviews tell viewers to expect something like a modern-day Sal\u00f2<\/em> (a\nnotorious 1975 production). They say it\u2019s an impeccably-produced, explicit and disturbing\nfeature that will have just as many viewers storming away from the film as being\nimpressed by it. The cast includes Helmut Berger, Marc Susini and Iliana Zabeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Monster Hunter<\/em> \u2013 Based on the Capcom game series,\nthis film adaptation comes from the filmmaker and star of the Resident Evil<\/em>\nfranchise. The plot involves a lieutenant and her team of soldiers. When the group\nis transported to a new and strange world, they find it populated by large\nmonsters with bizarre powers. In order to survive various attacks, they must\nsquare off against the creatures. The press was split on the end results with the\nmovie receiving slightly more negative reviews than positive ones. Upbeat\nwrite-ups said the film had solid action, great visual effects and impressive\nmonsters. Those who panned it said that the beasts were all that was good about\nthe feature, calling the characters thinly written and the story bland and repetitive.\nThe film stars Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa, Ron Perlman, T.I., Diego Doneta and Meagan\nGood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pinocchio<\/em> \u2013 The tale of a wooden puppet that comes to\nlife is retold in this Italian production. The protagonist, who wants to be a\nreal boy, travels and gets mixed up with bandits and other nefarious types as\nhe attempts to turn his dreams into reality. In 2002, Roberto Benigni starred in\nanother Italian adaptation as the title character. The movie was well regarded in\nits homeland, but its North American release suffered from atrocious English\ndubbing and flopped. This time out, the actor plays puppeteer Geppetto and the\ndistributor has avoided trying to rerecord the dialogue into English. Notices\nwere quite strong for the film. A few couldn\u2019t connect with the wooden protagonist.\nHowever, all others said that despite a few bumps in the road, the movie was compelling,\nbeautifully shot and managed to tell the familiar story in an original manner.\nIt also features Federico Ielapi, Rocco Papaleo, Massimo Ceccherini and Marine\nVacth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scare Me<\/em> \u2013 Two strangers in the Catskills take refuge\nin a cabin during a power outage. To pass the time, they each begin telling\nscary stories and attempt to out-frighten one another. However, as the various tales\nare relayed, the line between reality and fantasy become blurred and the\ncharacters soon face their own darkest fears. This little independent\nhorror\/comedy earned a lot of good press. The few reviewers who didn\u2019t like it\nwrote suggested that this anthology eventually ran out of gas, suggesting that the\nrunning time was far too long for its own good. However, the vast majority were\nimpressed with the performances and the mood generated, calling the picture a small\ngem that would impress indie horror enthusiasts. The cast includes Josh Ruben, Aya\nCash, Chris Redd, Rebecca Drysdale and Lauren Sick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The War and Peace of Tim O\u2019Brien<\/em> \u2013 This documentary\nexamines the life of Tim O\u2019Brien, a literary figure whom several have named the\nbest writer of his generation for his compositions about war. According The\npress synopsis for this film states that the Library of Congress recently named\nhis novel The Things They Carried<\/em> one of the 65 most influential books in\nUS history. Interestingly enough, O\u2019Brien hasn\u2019t written anything in decades. At\nthe age of 70, he decides to begin composing a new work about mortality,\nfatherhood and its connection to those who have experienced war trauma. The\nfilmmakers converse with him and discuss his thoughts on the subject and the\nreasons why he has decided to begin writing again. This film appears to be\ndebuting on disc and streaming platforms, so as of right now there aren\u2019t any\nreviews available for the picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Warmed-Over Krautrock<\/em> \u2013 An indie record store owner in\nthe Silver Lake district of Los Angeles is the lead in this little comedy. While\noperating the establishment, the protagonist begins to think that his youthful days\nare behind him and that his is falling out of touch with his young employees.\nAs he grapples with aging issues, his staff deal with their own personal troubles,\nincluding one musician struggling to break into the business. This feature,\nwhich sounds as though it may have been influenced in part by the movie and TV\nseries High Fidelity<\/em> (based on the Nick Hornby book), has played at a\nfew independent film festivals over the past year and is now making its debut\non disc and through streaming platforms. Jim Tavare, Kate Dalton, Derek James Elstro and Adam Weber headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Zappa<\/em> \u2013 The late Frank Zappa was a legendary singer\/songwriter\nand musician who created incredible experimental works and satirized American\nculture. Filmmaker Alex Winter (perhaps best known as Bill from the Bill\n& Ted<\/em> movies) has gained complete access to Zappa\u2019s family, as well as the\nartist\u2019s personal vault filled with unseen footage and new works. He uses new interviews\nand the recently uncovered material to present a fuller and more complete picture\nof the man. The press was very taken with the movie. There were only one or two\nreviewers who did not care for the film. It seems that those who weren\u2019t big\nfans of the artist said that the movie couldn\u2019t pull them in to Zappa\u2019s world.\nEveryone else was impressed by this character study and appreciated seeing the wide\nrange of surreal art and ideas presented in the movie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for some older flicks, there are plenty of\ntitles hitting high-definition as well. Kino have a trio of Bob Hope pictures\narriving on Blu-ray. The first is the Bob Hope\/Dorothy Lamour comedy, Caught\nin the Draft<\/em> (1941). Hope plays a movie star with a phobia of loud noises\nwho accidentally joins the army in the hopes of wooing a lady. The movie has\nbeen given a 4K restoration and includes a film historian commentary, a special\nwith the comedian entertaining troops, some performances from 1944 and 1945, a\nHollywood newsreel about the picture and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The second feature being released on Blu-ray is My\nFavorite Blonde<\/em> (1942). This one is about a performer meeting a spy on a\ntrain and getting wrapped up in adventure. This feature has been restored in 2K\nand arrives with a critic commentary. Nothing but the Truth<\/em> (1941) teams\nHope with Paulette Goddard. He plays a man who bets that he can tell the truth\nfor 24 hours, leading him into uncomfortable situations as other wagerers attempt\nto force him into a lie. This picture has also received a 2K restoration and similar\nextras as the previously mentioned title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If low-budget horror is more to your liking, Vinegar Syndrome\nhave you covered with some Spanish genre films. Cthulhu Mansion<\/em> (1992) is\na horror picture from Juan Piquer Sim\u00f3n (Slugs<\/em>) inspired by the work of\nH.P. Lovecraft. The movie is known for its gore and creature effects and has\nnever been officially released in the US. This Blu-ray contains a 2K restoration\nof the feature, a feature-length documentary about the director and an\ninterview with the make-up effects artist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Dark Tower<\/em> (1989) follows a woman who witnesses a\nworker fall from a Barcelona high-rise and becomes convinced that a monster is responsible\nfor the death. It stars Jenny Agutter and Michael Moriarty. This movie has also\nbeen restored in 2K for its worldwide Blu-ray debut and includes an interview\nwith the man who created the special effects and a promotional stills gallery. Satan\u2019s\nBlood<\/em> (1978) follows the horrific acts on a sinister cult. The movie has\nbeen newly scanned and restored in 4K for its Blu-ray release. This disc\nincludes the English and Spanish language tracks, a documentary on the production,\na film historian commentary and a still gallery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Families will be happy to see Disney are releasing a series\nof double feature Blu-rays containing some of their most successful titles. Many\nof the discs include the animated and live-action versions of these hits. You\ncan now purchase the Aladdin: 2-Movie Collection<\/em> (1992 and 2019) and Beauty\nand the Beast: 2-Movie Collection<\/em> (1991 and 2017), as well as the Cinderella:\n2-Movie Collection<\/em> (1950 and 2015). They also have The Incredibles:\n2-Movie Collection<\/em> (2004 and 2018) and The Lion King: 2-Movie Collection<\/em>\n(1994 and 2019). Additionally, you can pick up a Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent\n2-Movie Collection<\/em> (1959 and 2014). As if that wasn\u2019t enough, Disney are presenting\nthe Toy Story: 4-Movie Collection<\/em>, which contains every single movie in\nthe series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There are other big studios putting together Blu-ray combo packages\nas well. Universal has the Everyday Heroes 4-Movie Collection<\/em>, which\ncontains Apollo 13<\/em> (1995), Backdraft<\/em> (1991), Erin Brockovich<\/em>\n(2000) and Lone Survivor<\/em> (2013). Personally, I\u2019m not sure how the astronauts\nfrom the first movie fall under this category, but those are the titles being\nincluded. You can also purchase the Fearless Females 4-Movie Collection<\/em>.\nThis Blu-ray set includes Elizabeth<\/em> (1998), Harriet <\/em>(2019), Mary\nQueen of Scots<\/em> (2018) and On the Basis of Sex<\/em> (2018). The studio\u2019s Inspirational\n4-Movie Collection<\/em> Blu-ray has a bunch of excellent sports related titles\nlike Cinderella Man<\/em> (2005), Field of Dreams<\/em> (1989), Friday\nNight Lights<\/em> (2006) and Seabiscuit<\/em> (2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Paramount is also getting in on the act. This week, they\u2019re\nreleasing a Blu-ray set called the Girls Rule Collection<\/em>. It contains Clueless\n<\/em>(1995), Mean Girls<\/em> (2004) and She\u2019s the Man<\/em> (2006). <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re only a fan of She\u2019s the Man<\/em> (2006), you can also pick-up the 15th<\/sup> Anniversary Edition Blu-ray of the title. It includes two different cast and crew commentary tracks, a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, a gag reel, a music video and other bonuses. It looks like this is the identical disc that will be featured in the previous set, so you still might want to consider picking up the entire collection if you enjoy all of the movies included. Curiously enough, the movie features an early appearance from actor Channing Tatum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Paramount is presenting a 15th<\/sup> Anniversary\n4K Steelbook edition of Steven Spielberg\u2019s update of the H.G. Welles science-fiction\nclassic, War of the Worlds<\/em> (2005). This version stars Tom Cruise, Dakota\nFanning and Tim Robbins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It looks like Disney is taking the lead this week with their\nvarious animated\/live-action double feature Blu-ray sets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n 44 Cats: Meet the Cats<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Aladdin: 2-Movie Collection<\/em> (1992 and 2019) Disney On the Tube!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And here are all of the TV-themed releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 44 Cats: Meet the Cats<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Welcome back to another busy week running through all of the highlights coming out on Blu-ray and DVD.
