Currently, a streaming release has yet to be announced.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019m not sure if NASA has ever considered sending a team of young\nastronauts into orbit for space missions, but if they have the new film <em>Voyagers<\/em>\nwill likely cause them to question the idea. It\u2019s a movie that places teenagers\nagainst a science-fiction backdrop and seems in part inspired by the classic William\nGolding novel <em>Lord of the Flies<\/em>. Admittedly, the end results aren\u2019t perfect,\nbut the young cast are solid and the movie is slick and polished piece of\nentertainment that will certainly intrigue anyone unfamiliar with one of the\nfeature\u2019s main sources of inspiration. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/voyagers-04-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22502\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the future, global warming is slowly making the world uninhabitable.\nAfter locating an Earth-like planet 86 years away, scientist Richard Ailing (Colin\nFarrell) begins a program. It involves taking a crew of child astronauts created\nin the lab and raised in isolation to the planet for possible colonization.\nAlas, the lengthy journey means that it will be a multi-generational trip, with\nthe youngsters onboard unlikely to see the final destination. 10 years into the\nmission, teenagers Christopher (Tye Sheridan) and Zac (Fionn Whitehead) learn that\nall the water onboard has been treated with a chemical to make them docile.\nThey stop drinking the beverage and find their moods and hormones out-of-control.\nZac starts a rebellion and Christopher becomes concerned about his pal\u2019s\nviolent turn, as well as the safety of Sela (Lily-Rose Depp), whom Zac lusts\nafter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/voyagers-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22503\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spaceship environment, locked-off camera angles and\nstiff behavior of the teens early on effectively creates a tight and\nclaustrophobic feel aboard the ship. Considering most of the cast are youths, the\ncharacters are reasonably well-layered too. Naturally, leader Ailing feels\nguilty about some of his choices and understands that the situation they find\nthemselves in is problematic, personally witnessing how tough the confined and unhealthy\nenvironment is for the kids. It\u2019s also interesting to see teens who don\u2019t\npossess the social skills of others their age and who are, in some respects,\neasy to manipulate. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, major problems arise after one main suspicion of\nthe two leads is confirmed. Zac and Christopher become far more rash in their\nactions. Paranoia sets in and they also argue against having their lives planned\nout. This is where the <em>Lord of the Flies<\/em>-like scenarios come into play.\nIn general, they work and the confrontations are well edited and exciting to\nwatch. As Zac\u2019s desire for power grows and he begins lying to and threatening\nthose around him, the movie does generate tension. As Zac gets more extreme and\nthe action heats up, the camera adopts a more handheld feel. And even though\nthe movie can\u2019t release its characters from the small sets and spaces, the climactic\nshowdown is suspenseful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Voyagers-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22504\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, there are a few flaws. Naturally, one has to suspend\ndisbelief at the beginning and accept the concept of a dangerous space mission\ninvolving small children onboard performing various feats. The movie does a\ngreat job of creating a microcosm of society, dealing with issues like the\ninfluence of dangerous people on society as a whole. Yet the filmmakers do feel\ncompelled to resolve things in a very simple manner, cleaning plotlines up and leaving\nno mess behind. Naturally, the struggles any leader contends with doesn\u2019t\nsimply go away with a comment or two, so it would have been interesting to see\nmore of an open-ended or grayer resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Voyagers-03.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22505\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, beyond the immediate message of never allowing unsupervised teenagers to run riot on a spaceship, there is more going on underneath the surface of <em>Voyagers<\/em> than in many other teen-centric movies. The film is also well-performed, has a great deal of conflict and the pacing rarely lags. In the end, this is a solid science-fiction effort that should satisfy teenagers and may even keep the attention of older viewers. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This film is playing at open cinemas and drive-ins on April 9th.
