Welcome to another look at some of the highlights arriving\non Blu-ray and DVD. This is a very busy week featuring award-winning pictures,\nwell-reviewed independent features, as well as some great family fare. So, if\nyou can\u2019t make it out or shouldn\u2019t be heading to the movies this week, be sure\nto give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Big New Releases!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Above Suspicion<\/em> \u2013 Based on a true story, this drama\nfollows a young FBI agent who recruits a female informant in small Kentucky\ntown. She begins providing information on illegal activities in the area and\nthe two begin an illicit affair. Unfortunately for both of them, their\nactivities lead them down a murderous path that results in a major scandal. The\nmovie wrapped production back in 2017 but is only being released on disc now.\nCritics called this production a missed opportunity. A small group did\ncompliment the performances and felt that the cast\u2019s work was reason enough to give\nit a try. However, most thought that the film couldn\u2019t generate thrills or\ntension, suggesting that a true story doesn\u2019t always make for dynamic\nentertainment. The movie stars Emilia Clarke, Thora Birch, Jack Huston, Johnny\nKnoxville and Kevin Dunn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Cosmic Sin<\/em> \u2013 After an intergalactic skirmish with a\nnew alien species from another planet, a group of seven rogue soldiers travel\nthrough the galaxy to try and find the creatures\u2019 home planet. Fearing that human\ncolonization of space will cause an interstellar war between themselves and the\naliens, the team plot a massive strike against the civilization in order to prevent\nfuture conflict. Reaction was extremely poor towards this independent\nscience-fiction production. One or two reviewers stated that the flick was\nwell-paced and delivered a few B-movie thrills. Sadly, all others stated that the\nideas and themes on display were poorly handled, the dialogue was clunky and\nthe end results were a bit of a mess. It features Bruce Willis, Frank Grillo,\nBrandon Thomas Lee, Corey Large, C.J. Perry and Costas Mandylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Father<\/em> \u2013 An elderly man living at home finds his\ngrip on reality weakening and his relationship with family strained when his\ndaughter announces her intentions to move away and hire a nurse to help care\nfor him. The protagonist struggles to process what is occurring around him and\nhis emotions begin to boil over as more information about his plight is slowly\nrevealed. This film received raves from the press and won Academy Awards for\nBest Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Only a couple of write-ups had issues\nwith the feature, finding the storytelling gimmicky and the events\ndisorienting. The rest said that this technique was the very point of the film\nand noted that the exceptionally performed movie truly helped viewers\nunderstand the fear a person experiences while losing control of their mental\nfaculties. The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Colman, Mark Gatiss,\nImogen Poots, Rufus Sewell and Olivia Williams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Hunted<\/em> \u2013 This thriller involves a woman who meets a\ncharming man in a bar. Unfortunately, after leaving with the figure, the protagonist\ndiscovers that her new man is a psychopath. She escapes his clutches and tries\nto find safety in a nearby forest. The man pursues her and she is forced to\nfight back using whatever she can within the rugged natural environment.\nResponse towards this English-language Belgian\/French\/Irish movie was slightly\nmore positive than negative. Those who didn\u2019t care for the production thought\nits attempts to merge horror with fantastical elements were ineffective and\ntonally unbalanced. Slightly more stated that while uneven, this was still an\ninteresting update on the legend of Little Red Riding Hood<\/em>. Lucie Debay,\nArieh Worthalter and Ciaran O’Brien headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Minari <\/em>\u2013 Inspired by the filmmaker\u2019s childhood and personal\nexperiences, this drama tells the story of a Korean man who uproots his family\nfrom California, moving them to rural Arkansas in order to start their own farm\nspecializing in unique fruits and vegetables. However, it\u2019s a tough road with\nmany setbacks. The financial strain eventually causes great tension within the\nfamily. Reaction towards the film was almost uniformly excellent. A small\ncontingent said that the movie was sweet but slowly paced and tied things up\ntoo neatly at the close. However, everyone else asserted that it was a\nbeautifully acted, slice-of-life feature that paints an accurate picture of the\ndifficulties in moving to a new place. The movie won ultimately an Oscar for\nBest Supporting Actress. It stars Steven Yuen, Yeri Han, Noel Cho, Alan S. Kim,\nYoun Yuh-Jung and Will Patton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Nest<\/em> \u2013 Set in the 1980s, this tale features an ambitious entrepreneur who moves his family from the US to a large manor in England while he explores new financial opportunities. As we learn more about the businessman, it becomes clear that he is financially strapped and is keeping up appearances while the family live a financially unsustainable lifestyle. As the bills pile up, the spouses begin to turn on each other. The press consensus for this drama was very upbeat. A tiny contingent found the characters difficult to like and their downward spiral frustrating to watch. Still, the vast majority said it was a low-key but compelling watch that delivers a sense of unease as it details an upper-class family coming undone. The cast includes Jude Law, Carrie Coon, Oona Roche and Charlie Shotwell. To read a full review of the feature, click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Prince\u2019s Voyage<\/em> \u2013 This animated film from France\ninvolves an old, bipedal simian prince who washes up on the shore of a distant\nand unknown land. He\u2019s found by an ape-boy who takes him into a modern city of\nmonkeys and delivers the traveler to his parents, who are scientists at a local\nmuseum. The prince tries to learn the language and ways of these people, but\nbecomes concerned by some of their conservative attitudes. This movie is based\non a novel by Pierre Boulle called Monkey Planet<\/em> and was nominated for\nan award a couple of years ago at a European film festival. Unfortunately, it\nseems as if it got lost in the shuffle due to the pandemic and is only now\nbeing released in North America. There aren\u2019t many write-ups for it, but most online\nsuggest it\u2019s a decent film with great visuals that effectively uses the leads\nto address topics like prejudice. The movie is presented in French with an English\nsubtitle track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Raya and the Last Dragon<\/em> \u2013 Disney\u2019s latest animated adventure takes place in a fantastic world in which people and dragons once coexisted, until the serpents sacrificed themselves to protect the land from an evil force. In the following years, human communities begin fighting to gain control of the creature\u2019s ancient powers. One girl discovers a surviving dragon and asks the monster to help her return the land to its former glory. Overall, critics were very impressed with this family flick. There were a few who thought it was gorgeous to look at, but formulaic with underdeveloped characters and themes. Regardless, the majority opined that this was solid entertainment that looked incredible and featured some standout vocal work. The voice cast includes Kelly Marie Tran, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Daniel Dae Kim, Benedict Wong, Sandra Oh and Alan Tudyk. To read this site\u2019s review of the film, click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shithouse<\/em> \u2013 A lonely college freshman thinking about\ngiving up on his education and heading back home decides to attend a frat\nparty. While there, he meets a sophomore who has just experienced a tragic loss\nand needs company. These two very different people discuss their problems and\nconcerns, sparking up an unexpected friendship over the course of a single\nevening. This independent feature earned plenty of upbeat write-ups. A limited\nnumber said that the dialogue between the students felt real and honest, but thought\nthis authenticity didn\u2019t necessary lend itself to interesting storytelling.\nHowever, the overwhelming majority said that the title of the feature was something\nof a misnomer and stated that the film was a touching and well-acted\ncoming-of-age gem. It stars Cooper Raiff and Dylan Gelula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Son<\/em> \u2013 8 years after a pregnant woman escapes from a\ncult, she and her son are visited by members of the sinister sect who are\ndetermined to take her child away. The protagonist and the boy go on the run\nand try to get assistance from a police detective. But when the youngster\nunexpectedly takes ill and starts behaving strangely, his mother is forced to take\na stand against the cult and protect her child. This independent horror flick\nreceived more positive reviews than negative ones. Articles that panned the\nmovie complained that the story wasn\u2019t very original and the attacks felt repetitive.\nStill, the consensus was that movie was well acted and provided the required\ngross-outs, while also addressing issues like paranoia. The cast includes Andi\nMatichak, Emile Hirsch, Luke\nDavid Blumm and Cranston Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Supernova<\/em> \u2013 After a man is diagnosed with dementia,\nhe and his partner decide to travel across England in an RV and visit people\nand places from their past. It is all planned out in an attempt to make the\nmost of what little time they have left together. However, when one of the men\ntries to add unexpected elements to the journey, it adds drama and tension to\nthe trip. This little UK production received plenty of raves during its limited\nrelease early in the year. A handful of reviewers thought that the story was\nobvious in its attempts to manipulate the emotions of viewers and ultimately didn\u2019t\nmake a lasting impression. Yet most thought that while the movie was subtle,\nthe acting was incredible and the tale created a lot of intimate and relatable drama.\nIt features Colin Firth, Stanley Tucci and Pippa Haywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tom & Jerry<\/em> \u2013 This adaptation of the famous\ncartoon cat and mouse places the famous animated characters in a live-action\nsetting. The story involves a celebrity wedding in a fancy New York hotel. When\nthe mouse Jerry breaks into the hotel to enjoy the food and luxuries being\noffered to guests, Tom the cat is hired to eliminate the pesky rodent. The two\ncreate chaos as the wedding unfolds, threating to take down the entire\nbuilding. The press disliked the end results. There was a contingent who\nclaimed that some of the sight gags worked and that the film would effectively\ndistract and entertain young tykes. Yet the majority complained that this was a\npoor update and also thought that it spent too much time focusing on the humans\ninstead of the lead animals. The cast includes Chlo\u00eb Grace Moretz, Michael Pe\u00f1a,\nRob Delaney, Jordan Bolger, Patsy Ferran, Pallavi Sharda, Colin Jost and Ken Jeong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s another jam-packed edition if you happen to be looking\nfor high-definition upgrades of classic titles. Universal are presenting a 4K\nBlu-ray (which also comes with a regular Blu-ray) of the madcap comedy, Animal\nHouse<\/em> (1978). This feature from director John Landis (The Blues Brothers<\/em>,\nAn American Werewolf in London<\/em>, Trading Places<\/em>, Spies Like Us<\/em>,\nThree Amigos!<\/em>, Coming to America<\/em>) deals with a college fraternity\nof losers getting into politically incorrect hi-jinx and taking down the school\u2019s\nsnobs and arrogant Dean. It boasts an incredible cast that includes Tom Hulce,\nStephen Furst, Jim Belushi, Kevin Bacon, Karen Allen, Tim Matheson, Peter\nRiegert, Donald Sutherland, John Vernon and musician Otis Day. Beside the\npicture upgrade, you\u2019ll also receive a reunion featurette, an alumni update, a\ncouple of Scene It? games on the disc that area based on clips from the movie.\nIn addition, it comes with trailers.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studio is also releasing the Blu-ray set Dragonheart:\n5-Movie Collection<\/em>. It contains all of the flicks in the series from the\noriginal in 1996 to the most recent straight-to-disc sequel from 2019.\nPersonally, I haven\u2019t seen any of the follow-ups, but the original is now old\nenough that it likely has a following from adults who might have originally\nseen the film as kids. Now, fans can own the entire franchise in one package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

MVD have a Blu-ray of Mackintosh and T.J.<\/em> <\/a>(1975). This feature marked the final film appearance of Roy Rogers. He plays a cowboy looking for work who befriends and comes to the assistance of a runaway teen. The disc includes a 4K restoration of the feature, an audio commentary with the movie\u2019s co-stars Clay O\u2019Brien and Andrew Robinson, a reunion with these cast members. You\u2019ll also get an interview with co-star Billy Green Bush and some original footage that was taken on set during production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kino are presenting the French drama Madame Rosa<\/em>\n(1977) on Blu-ray. It won an Academy Award for Best Foreign-language feature\nand arrives with a 4K restoration and an audio commentary with a film\nhistorian.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout! Factory have some notable Blu-rays on the way. Eyes\nof a Stranger<\/em> (1981) is a slasher known for its unusual cast. Specifically,\nthe movie marks the feature film debuts of Lauren Tewes (from TV\u2019s The Love\nBoat<\/em>) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Fast Times at Ridgemont High<\/em>, Miami\nBlues<\/em>, The Hudsucker Proxy<\/em>, eXistenZ<\/em>, The Hateful Eight<\/em>,\nPossessor<\/em>). The film\u2019s inter-positive has received a 2K scan for this\nedition and the disc comes with a film historian commentary, a director\ninterview, a discussion with the man who played the psychopath, a talk with the\nmake-up effects team, as well as an audio interview with the composer. Besides\nall of these new features, the rare original trailer is also presented along\nwith a still gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

He Knows You\u2019re Alone <\/em>(1980) is another slasher of\nnote. This one is about a maniac who stalks and murders women who are about to\nbe married. Honestly, the real reason this movie is so noteworthy is that it\nfeatures the first motion picture role for Ton Hanks, who plays a psych major\noffering his take on who the killer might be. This movie arrives on Blu-ray\nwith a 2K scan, an interview with the director, another with the writer, and\nother discussions with various cast members. It also comes with a previously\nrecorded commentary track featuring the director and writer, as well as\npublicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the distributor\u2019s most notable title this week is\nthe comedy, Wildcats<\/em> (1986), which has been out-of-print forever and is\nfinally making its Blu-ray debut. The movie stars Goldie Hawn as a woman who\ntakes on the role of football coach at an inner-city Chicago high school.\nRemarkably enough, two of the students on her team are played by future stars Wesley\nSnipes and Woody Harrelson. This movie has also been given a new restoration\nfrom a brand-new 2K scan and comes with a screenwriter interview, as well as a\ntraining montage music video and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Severin also have some amusing genre films hitting Blu-ray.\nThe first is a Special Edition of the nature-run-amok flick, Day of the\nAnimals<\/em> (1977). It follows a group of tourists being led into the mountains\non a wilderness tour. They are soon attacked by just about every animal they\nencounter on the trail. This entertainingly pulpy item is perhaps most famous\nfor its supporting turn by the late, great Leslie Nielsen, whose character\neventually goes mad, rips his shirt off and wrestles a grizzly bear to the\ndeath. The release includes a film critic commentary track and interviews with\nsome of the actors, as well as the stunt coordinator. There is also a 30-year\nretrospective special on the movie and all sorts of publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of angry bears, the distributor also has a Blu-ray\nof Grizzly<\/em> (1976), which actually was made by the same people who\nproduced the previous title. This Special Edition features a 2K transfer of the\nkiller grizzly movie with loads of new bonuses. The features into a film\nwriter\/fan commentary, new interviews with the producer and a cast member, a\ndiscussion with a movie critic about the career of the director, a few vintage\nbehind-the-scenes making-of featurettes, radio spots, trailers and more.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Severin are releasing a 4K Blu-ray of the\nAlejandro Jodorowsky arthouse horror picture, Santa Sangre<\/em> (1989). This\nis a visionary, well-regarded and very odd chiller about a mentally unhinged\ncircus performer who teams with his armless mother to start a religious cult.\nThis unusual movie arrives in a 4-disc package that includes a CD of the\nsoundtrack and more extras than can possibly be listed here. If you\u2019re looking\nfor something more affordable, you can also pick up a 2-disc version which\ncontains most of the bonuses, but no soundtrack. Naturally, it comes with a\ndirector commentary and several interviews with Jodorowsky himself. There are\nalso discussions with just about every behind-the-scenes crew member involved\nin the production. If you\u2019re a fan of the filmmaker, this is a must-own\nBlu-ray.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpion also have some fun Blu-rays headed your way. The\nfirst one being offered is the French movie, Baxter<\/em> (1989), a very, very\ndark comedy that takes viewers inside the mind of a sadistic bull terrier. The\ndisc includes a director\u2019s commentary and trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up a Blu-ray of The Daydreamer<\/em>\n(1966). Directed by Jules Bass (of Rankin\/Bass fame) it\u2019s a movie that delivers\nplenty of stop-motion animation tricks. The story depicts a young Hans\nChristian Andersen dreaming up all of the characters who would become famous in\nhis written stories. A film historian audio commentary is included that details\nhow this work fits in with Bass\u2019s more famous late 60s and early 70s\nstop-motion animated TV specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer<\/em>, Frosty\nthe Snowman<\/em> and Here Comes Peter Cottontail<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criterion also have an impressive Blu-ray coming your way in\nthe form of the Taiwanese period drama, Flowers of Shanghai<\/em> (1998).\nUsing impressive long takes, the story details the relationships between\ncourtesans and their high-ranking, wealthy clients. The movie arrives on disc\nwith a 4K digital restoration, a critic introduction, a new documentary on the\nmaking of the film, excerpts from a 2005 interview with the director, and a\ntrailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It Happened Tomorrow<\/em> (1944) is a well-regarded comedy\nwith Dick Powell about a reporter who gets details about tomorrow\u2019s big new\nstories from a mysterious old man \u2013 of course, getting a look at the immediate\nfuture soon causes unanticipated problems and concerns for the protagonist. Cohen\nMedia Group are presenting this film on Blu-ray restored with a 4K scan. It\nalso comes with a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s more! Sony have decided that people really need\nan updated 4K Blu-ray edition of the Arnold Schwarzenegger box office flop, Last\nAction Hero<\/em> (1993), so they\u2019re making it available to the public. Who\nknows, maybe the movie holds up a little better than I remember?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paramount also are delivering some impressive new titles.\nThe first is a 25th<\/sup> Anniversary Edition of the Tom Cruise action\/adventure\nthrill ride, Mission: Impossible<\/em> (1996). Yes, it has been that long\nsince the original film graced cinema screens and the star continues to keep\npumping out more sequels. The disc includes a newly remastered version of the\nfilm, all of the extras from previous editions and includes a collectable car\ndecal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The previous title was directed by Brian De Palma and\nParamount also have a Blu-ray of his thriller, Snake Eyes<\/em> (1998)\nstarring Nicolas Cage. The actor plays a shady police detective who finds\nhimself in the middle of a conspiracy while attending a boxing match. This\nmovie has some great camera work (including a ten-minute plus opening master\nshot that establishes the setting and the major incident that sets off the plot).\nThe studio cut out the entire climax of the film as it was being completed,\nmeaning that the ending doesn\u2019t work as well as it should, but there\u2019s still\nsome fun to be had with this picture. It\u2019d be nice (providing the material\nstill exists) if Paramount would one day pay to reinsert and finish the elaborate\nclimax back into the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Snoopy 4-Movie Collection<\/em> is a remarkable Blu-ray\nset that includes four feature-length Peanuts flicks. The titles included are A\nBoy Named Charlie Brown<\/em> (1969), Snoopy, Come Home<\/em> (1972), Race\nfor Your Life, Charlie Brown<\/em> (1977) and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (and\nDon’t Come Back!!)<\/em> (1980). Today\u2019s kids might find the movies a little slow\nand pensive for their tastes, but perhaps they\u2019ll appreciate them. If not,\nthey\u2019ll be a real nostalgia kick for those who grew up with them. It should be\nalmost impossible for fans of Peanuts to pass up this impressive collection of\nmovies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Paramount are also presenting a 4K edition of\ncrime\/comedy The Sting<\/em> (1973), which was a massive hit during its original\nrelease and ended up winning seven Academy Awards. In addition to the improved\npicture quality, the disc also arrives with plenty of extras about the picture\nand its new restoration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, in case you were a fan of the recent war movie, The\nOutpost<\/em> (2020), there will be a new Extended Director\u2019s Cut Blu-ray of the\nmovie arriving on store shelves this week courtesy of Screen Media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Archive are delivering an impressive\nquantity of titles through their made-to-order service. For those who enjoy\nmartial arts features, Drunken Master II<\/em> (1994) is considered one of\nJackie Chan\u2019s finest films. The studio is presenting the original Hong Kong\nversion of the feature on Blu-ray for the first time in North America and\napparently the image quality is very strong \u2013 I\u2019ll be sure to pick it up when\nthe opportunity arises. The studio is also delivering the William Holden\nwestern, Escape from Fort<\/em> Bravo<\/em> (1953) in high definition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many will also be happy to see a Blu-ray of the Cary Grant\ncomedy, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House<\/em> (1948). This comedy follows\na family from the city who decide to have a country home built to their specifications,\nonly to find things literally falling apart. To be frank, this one isn\u2019t a\npersonal favorite, but the movie has a massive fanbase who will be thrilled to\nfinally be able to pick it up. And Warner Brothers are also making the\nhistorical drama The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex<\/em> (1939)\navailable on Blu-ray. This feature from Hollywood legend Michael Curtiz (The\nAdventures of Robin Hood<\/em>, Casablanca<\/em>, White Christmas<\/em>) stars\nBette Davis and Errol Flynn as Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Essex. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
