This Warner Bros. feature opens at cinemas on Friday,\nJune 4th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the eight years since The Conjuring<\/em> first\npremiered at cinemas, its success has paved the way for a massive horror franchise.\nMost of the spin-offs, including The Nun<\/em>, Annabelle<\/em> and The\nCurse of La Llorona<\/em> haven\u2019t managed to capture the magic of the original or\neven its follow-up. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It i<\/em>s the third\nofficial sequel that once again follows the team of paranormal investigators known\nas the Warrens. The likable leads do add some gravitas to the proceedings, but\ntruth be told, this effort ultimately feels like it has more in common with the\nlesser spin-offs than it does with the original. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story begins with medium Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga)\nand husband Ed (Patrick Wilson) attempting to help a family rid a child of\ndemonic possession via an exorcism. Afterward, a young man involved in the\nprocedure named Arne Johnson (Ruairi O\u2019Connor) begins to show signs that the\nsupernatural force has taken up new residence within his body. After Arne is\narrested for a brutal murder, Lorraine and Ed vow to investigate the slaying\nand determine if the act was actually the result of the same body-jumping demon.\nThey begin uncovering more history about the creature itself, as well as the\ndisturbing practices of Satan-worshipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feature attempts to add a bit of variety by shifting focus away from the spiritual antics featured in the first two titles. Despite being slightly smaller in scope, the concept itself is perhaps even more outrageous than in the earlier titles. But at least the possession storyline does offer the opportunity for the leads to contend with a new malevolent presence that can take control of any unsuspecting human (and even a dead body when the opportunity presents itself). The frequent body-jumping does offer a few chills as the demon focuses its attention on the Warrens themselves and tries to break them apart.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story also benefits from the tireless work of the leads,\nwho do a decent job of selling the kooky material. Ed suffers from a severe\nheart condition in this tale and as a result the character feels more at danger\nthan in previous entries. There are some nice and earnest moments between\nFarmiga and Wilson as they try to deal with his health issues while they take\non a formidable foe. A couple of sequences, including a trip to a morgue in the\ndead of night and a showdown in a dimly lit catacomb, are reasonably tense and perilous\nfor the protagonists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there\u2019s a lot that doesn\u2019t work as effectively this\ntime out. Perhaps we\u2019ve seen them too many times over the past seven features,\nbut most of the jump scares aren\u2019t as unexpected or jarring this time out. And\nwhile we get some decent character material with the Warrens, prisoner Arne and\nhis interactions with supporting cast members aren\u2019t as interesting. He\u2019s cut\noff from the main cast and it feels like he\u2019s a separate film. Additionally,\nthe villains aren\u2019t nearly as well-drawn this time out. There is an explanation\nfor the Satanic acts that come into play, but the motivation of the main foe isn\u2019t\nparticularly original or exciting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the climax does feature some creepy tunnels, there are\nno standout sets like the massive flooded basement from the previous entry or,\nwell, the entire creepy house from the original film. These issues, as well as\na mystery that isn\u2019t particularly interesting, an undercooked villain and the\nhit-and-miss scare ratio prevent this entry from reaching the heights of its\npredecessors. Indeed, it ends up feeling more like a spin-off than a proper\nsequel. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It<\/em> has an excellent cast and\nfew chilling moments, but won\u2019t bewitch horror fans as much as the earlier\nfilms did.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
