They kidnap a pregnant woman and use a reverse exorcism\ntechnique to try and put the deceased child\u2019s soul into the unborn fetus.\nUnfortunately, the pair soon realize that they have actually brought a sinister\nspirit into their home with an ominous plan. Genre critics gave this Canadian\nhorror flick high marks. In fact, it only has one negative review so far, which\ncomplained that the ending didn\u2019t work and that all of the plot elements\nweren\u2019t property resolved. Everyone else called the movie creepy and\ndisturbing, complimenting both the writing and performances. It stars Sheila\nMcCarthy, Julian Richings, Konstantina Mantelos, Josh Cruddas and Yannick\nBisson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n French Exit<\/em> \u2013 This quirky comedy follows a New York\nsocialite and widow who discovers that she and her directionless son have completely\nrun through her late husband\u2019s fortune with their lavish spending habits. She\ndecides to leave her home with the intention of living out her remaining years\nin a small Paris apartment. After arriving, the pair attempt to regroup and\nfigure out their next move, encountering old acquaintances and some new faces\nas they make a new start. The press was slightly more positive about this dark\ncomedy than they were negative. Those who disliked the feature didn\u2019t find it\nfunny and suggested that the eccentric characters were too unlikable and\nunrelatable. Still, more praised the lead performance as fantastic and stated\nthat the movie was enjoyably peculiar. The cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer,\nLucas Hedges, Tracy Letts, and Valerie Mahaffey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em> \u2013 It has only been a couple of months since its release at cinemas, but this monster spectacular is now making its debut on disc. When Godzilla reappears and begins attacking various cities, scientists decide to enlist the help of giant ape King Kong to help them stop the threat. As the two behemoths clash, humans on the ground begin to uncover the reason that the giant green lizard is on the warpath. Response towards this follow-up was generally good. There was a contingent who felt that while the big climactic fight delivered, the story was a mess and poor writing for the human characters ruined the flick. However, a slightly larger number stated that the CGI monsters and action was enjoyable, providing escapist fun for genre movie fans. The film features Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Julian Dennison, Kyle Chandler and Demi\u00e1n Bichir. To read this site\u2019s review of the film, click here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Great War of Archimedes<\/em> \u2013 This foreign-language\nfeature is a period film set in the early 1930s, when the Japanese Imperial\nNavy set out to construct the world\u2019s biggest battleship at any cost. A young\nnaval officer disagrees with the decision and the direction taken by his\nwar-mongering superiors. After being forced to work on the project, he uses his\naccounting and design skills to uncovers a deeper conspiracy that may alter the\nfuture of the country. In this part of the world, there haven\u2019t been a great\nmany notices written for this title yet, but the ones that have appeared are\ncomplementary. They state that this is a small-scale but interesting look at\nthe ill-advised choices made by leaders that would end up pulling the country\ninto World War II. Masaki Suda, Jun\nKunimura, Minami Hamabe and Min Tanaka headline\nthe film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Kindred<\/em> \u2013 A pregnant woman is devastated by news that\nher boyfriend has passed away in a car wreck. The family of the deceased man\nask to take his significant other to stay with them at their lavish country\nmanor. She accepts the offer, but finds the transition difficult and beings\nexperiencing horrifying visions. Things intensify after the lead discovers that\nher hosts may have disturbing plans for her baby. This creeper from the UK\ngarnered decent reviews overall. Several did end up describing the film as a\npoor man\u2019s Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em> and complained that it didn\u2019t live up to the\nmovies that inspired it. Still, the general consensus was this was an effective\nand eerie effort with some interesting subtext. They also noted that it built\nmomentum as it progressed. It features Tamara Lawrence, Fiona Shaw, Jack Lowden\nand Edward Holcroft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lust for Gold: A Race Against Time<\/em> \u2013 This documentary\nfollows a retired missile scientist who believes he knows the location of large\ngold deposit. His research suggests it is hidden away on Federal land within\nSuperstition Mountain in Arizona. Concerned that the treasure trove might be\nhoarded before he gets there, he recruits a team to sneak into the site and\ntake the fortune before anyone else stakes a claim. The group risk personal injury\nand prosecution for trespassing as they head out to find the loot. It looks\nlike this non-fiction received a limited release a few weeks back and is now\nmaking its debut on disc. There aren\u2019t any reviews available for the project,\nexcept for one currently posted on a Blu-ray review website. They found it to\nbe an interesting little flick about obsessive treasure hunters with some great\nphotography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Resurrection <\/em>\u2013 The latest faith-based production feature\ntells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. It looks like the plot focuses on\nthe followers of the religious icon, who find themselves lost, hunted and\nleaderless after Jesus is arrested and tried by Roman officials. They struggle\nto deal with despair as he is hung, only to witness the figure return from the\ndead and restore their faith. This picture was released by Warner Bros. around\nEaster but didn\u2019t get a lot of press. There have only been a few reviews. Some\nsaid that the movie was a standard retelling of the Bible story and didn\u2019t\noffer anything that hadn\u2019t been seen before. Still, a couple of the write-ups\nwere upbeat, noting that the movie was graphic and disturbing, but had good\nperformances and was well-produced. The cast includes Joanne Whalley, Greta\nScacchi, Juan Pablo Di Pace, Vincent Regan, Indra Ov\u00e9 and Richard Coyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Rock Dog 2: Rock Around the Park<\/em> \u2013 This follow-up to\nthe 2016 animated film features an entirely new voice cast. The story follows\nthe same Tibetan mastiff dog who dreams of being a rock star. After finding\nsuccess in the first film, he and his band decide to leave their Snow Mountain\nhome and head out on a world tour. While on the road, they befriend a pop\nsensation whom they are performing with. As all of them become famous, the\nmusicians face new challenges as they struggle to deal with their success. This\nweek, the sequel was released on disc and as a digital download. It appears to have been created exclusively for\nthe direct-to-video market, meaning that no members of the press have seen it. As\nsuch, viewers should not expect too much from this title. Andrew Francis,\nAshleigh Ball, Brian Dobson, Brian Drummond, Cathy Weseluck and Donny Lucas\nlend their voices to the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n SAS: Red Notice<\/em> \u2013 A special forces agent plans on\nproposing to his significant other while taking a trip from London to Paris. They\nboard a train, but as they enter a tunnel in order to cross the English Channel,\na criminal and team of war criminals decide to seize the locomotive and hold\nthose onboard for ransom. Cut off from help and surrounded by explosives, it\u2019s\nup to the agent to save the travelers and take down the baddies. Reaction\ntowards this European coproduction was decidedly split. Half stated that the\nend product was a weak effort that relied on nothing but all-too-familiar\naction movie cliches. However, just as many asserted that while the story was predictable,\nit was still enjoyable, over-the-top fun that would raise a smile or two out of\nanyone looking for a thrill. It stars Sam Heughan, Ruby Rose, Andy Serkis, Hannah\nJohn-Kamen, Tom Hopper, Noel Clarke and Tom Wilkinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Us Kids<\/em> \u2013 Horrified by the gun violence plaguing\ntheir schools, this documentary chronicles the work of the March for Our Lives\nmovement. The group was formed by students striving for more stringent gun laws\nin America. Several activists and survivors of shootings pull together to\ncreate the largest youth protest in the country\u2019s history and detail their\nhopes and aspirations for the future. Reviews were generally positive for this\neffort. There were a few write-ups that stated that the movie itself felt like\na promo piece instead of delivering a truly inspiring message to viewers.\nHowever, the majority did believe the film did its job effectively and thought\nit helped paint a very personal portrait of those who have been affected by\nshootings. For the time being, this documentary will be available on DVD only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Voyagers<\/em> \u2013 With the population dwindling and humanity at stake, a dangerous mission to a far-off world is undertaken in the hopes of colonizing a new planet and repopulating our species. Due to the extended length of the journey, the majority of passengers are children. When the adult leader of the expedition is put out of commission and the now teenage population are left on their own, raging hormones lead to power struggles and violent behavior. In general, this young-adult sci-fi picture didn\u2019t wow the critics. There was a contingent who thought that the cast and visual effects were good and that the movie was an interesting study of human sociology. However, more didn\u2019t like the characters and some found it frustrating that the problems encountered were all due to the behavior of the main characters. It stars Colin Farrell, Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp, Fionn Whitehead and Chant\u00e9 Adams. Read this site\u2019s take on the movie here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a lot of material arriving on Blu-ray this week.\nShout! Factory are taking genre fans to Egypt with their latest titles. The\nAwakening<\/em> (1980) follows an archeologist who discovers a tomb as his wife\nis giving birth. Years later, he becomes convinced that his child has been\npossessed by a soul of a sinister Egyptian queen. This movie stars Charlton Heston\nand Stephanie Zimbalist. This disc includes a new 2K scan of the film\u2019s\ninter-positive and includes publicity materials like the trailer and TV ads. <\/p>\n\n\n\n More archeologists get into trouble in the thriller, Sphinx<\/em>\n(1981). This one follows a group in Cairo searching for a tomb near the Valley\nof the Kings that is filled with ancient artifacts and gold. Of course, black\nmarketers are equally interested in the valuable items and decide to eliminate\nthe protagonists. The cast includes Lesley-Anne Down, Frank Langella, John\nGielgud, John Rhys-Davies and Victoria Tennant. Specs on the Blu-ray are\nexactly the same as on the previous release from the distributor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino have a wide variety of Blu-rays coming your way. The\nfirst is Body Slam<\/em> (1986), a comedy set around the world of professional\nwrestling the features Dirk Benedict, Tanya Roberts, Roddy Piper, Lou Albano\nand Barry Gordon. For its Blu-ray debut, the film has been given a 2K master.\nIt also includes an interview with co-star Gordon and two theatrical trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n On a completely different note, they also have a Blu-ray of the\nperiod family picture, The Railway Children<\/em> (1970). It\u2019s about a family\nwhose patriarch is sent away, forcing them to travel across the land and try to\nmake a fresh start. This title was recently named one of the top 100 British\nfilms of the 20th<\/sup> century. It has been restored by StudioCanal and\narrives with a film historian commentary track and trailer. Take This Job\nand Shove It<\/em> (1981) is a comedy with Robert Hays and Barbara Hershey about\nan efficiency expert at a brewery who ends up helping the employees after the\nbusiness is sold to a shady and incompetent Texas oil baron. The Blu-ray\nbonuses on this title include a stills gallery and trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And Kino are presenting some world cinema in the form of Tous\nles Matins du Monde<\/em> (1991) aka All the Mornings of the World<\/em>. G\u00e9rard\nDepardieu appears in this C\u00e9sar Award-winner (the French equivalent of the\nOscars). This Blu-ray title features a film expert commentary, making-of and\ntrailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking for something with more of a B-movie vibe in high\ndefinition? You\u2019ll be happy to learn that Code Red are putting out The Being<\/em>\n(1983). It\u2019s a monster movie about a slimy creature devouring victims in a\nsmall town. This Blu-ray disc has a 2K restoration of the feature, one\nfeature-length audio commentary with the director and a second with the star\nand a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n One Potato, Two Potato<\/em> (1964) is a drama detailing an\ninterracial marriage and the horrific problems faced by the Midwestern couple. Considered\nwell ahead of its time, the movie was also nominated for an Academy Award for\nBest Original Screenplay. This film has been given a 4K restoration and arrives\non Blu-ray with a new interview with director Larry Peerce (The Incident<\/em>,\nA Separate Peace<\/em>, Two-Minute Warning<\/em>), as well as film historian\ncommentary and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion are releasing a double-feature Blu-ray of the\ndocumentary Streetwise <\/em>(1984) and its sequel, TINY: The Life of Erin\nBlackwell<\/em> (2016). The first movie captures the lives of teenagers in\nSeattle, while the follow-up catches up with one of the youths and continues\nher story. Both pictures have been restored and given high-definition digital\ntransfers. There is also a director commentary on the first movie, interviews\nwith the filmmaker and the editor, four short films from the director, a\ntrailer and an essay about the importance of these films. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Paramount Presents line has been giving deluxe treatment\nto many films in the studio vaults. Their latest Blu-ray release is the\nwestern, Last Train from Gun Hill<\/em> (1959). Directed by John Sturges (Bad\nDay at Black Rock<\/em>, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral<\/em>, The Magnificent\nSeven<\/em>, The Great Escape<\/em>), the movie follows a US Marshall hunting\ndown his wife\u2019s killer, who is the son of his best friend. The studio is\npresenting the movie from a new 6K restoration of the film from the original\nnegative. Film critic Leonard Maltin gives his perspective on the feature and\noriginal trailers are also includes. Like with others in the line, it has\nfold-out packaging of the original poster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lionsgate are giving Best Buy an Exclusive with their\nSteelbook of the fantastic, Oscar-nominated crime film, Sicario<\/em> (2015).\nThe disc is likely the same as in previous editions, but the new casing and\ncover may appeal to collectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony are presenting a 4K edition of the stunning\nscience-fiction film, Gattaca<\/em> (1997). This phenomenal and highly\nrecommended tale of a genetically inferior man trying to become an astronaut\nwill definitely benefit from the picture and sound upgrade. It stars Ethan\nHawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. The studio is also delivering a 4K version of\nthe enjoyable Clint Eastwood action pic, In the Line of Fire<\/em> (1993). He\nplays a secret service agent protecting the president against a formidable\nformer CIA assassin, who is played by John Malkovich. And about a month ago,\nSony revealed that they were putting out a 4K disc of the Arnold Schwarzenegger\nbox office flop, Last Action Hero<\/em> (1993). It ended up being pulled at\nthe last minute, but has now reappeared on the schedule and the Blu-ray is due\nout this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Warner Bros. is releasing a 3-Film Collection Blu-ray of Godzilla\nvs. Kong<\/em> (2021), Godzilla: King of the Monsters<\/em> (2019) and Kong:\nSkull Island<\/em> (2017), for fans who have enjoyed the titles but haven\u2019t\npicked them up yet. One assumes that the release contains the previous editions\nof the disc collected together in one package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally, the made-to-order Warner Archive line has\nBlu-rays of the Anthony Quinn\/Charles Bronson western, Guns for San\nSebastian<\/em> (1968), as well as the all-star musical, Ziegfeld Follies<\/em>\n(1945).
