DEATH RINK<\/strong> \u2013 Also known as Skateway Massacre<\/em>,\na roller rink is the setting for this independent horror film. The closing\nstaff at the locale hang out and discuss their personal problems at the end of\na shift, only to find their lives in danger when a masked figure appears and\nbegins eliminating the group members one by one. This title premiered on various\nOn-Demand sites and Amazon Prime and is now arriving as a DVD-only disc\nrelease. There aren\u2019t a lot of reviews available for the title right now, but\nthe ones that have popped up online note that this is a small, extremely\nlow-budget homemade project. They note that the cast is decent, but suggest\nmany elements are a bit amateurish (poor plotting and awkwardly staged murders)\nand that one shouldn\u2019t expect too much from the title. Amanda Courtney, Caedmon Holland, Alan Humphrey and Kim Johnson headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\nDREAMBUILDERS <\/strong>\u2013 In this Danish animated family flick,\na young girl gains the ability to communicate with a magical crew who help create\nour dreams. When her divorced dad remarries, the lead is tormented by her\nbullying stepsister. Knowing that the new sibling is afraid of spiders, the\ngirl decides to teach the new arrival a lesson. However, after learning more\nabout her relation\u2019s personal struggles, the protagonist decides to try and form\na bond instead. This Blu-ray and DVD combo pack contains both an English and\noriginal French audio track. On the whole, critics were positive about what\nthey saw. Those who disliked it said that the animation didn\u2019t match the level\nof studios like Pixar and commented that certain story elements were too disturbing\nand distressing for young kids. Yet more thought the movie improved as it\nprogressed, had a nice message and was innovative enough to keep their\nattention. <\/p>\n\n\n\nTHE FATAL RAID<\/strong> \u2013 This picture from Hong Kong begins\nwith a chaotic and bloody fracas between a group of ultraviolent cops and a vicious\ngang. 20 years later, the surviving police team members still want retribution for\nthe disastrous battle. They decide to restart the squad, recruiting new female\nmembers to take down the crooks responsible. This leads to an explosive final\nconfrontation between the mob and the new warrior officers. Unfortunately, this\nforeign-language action film didn\u2019t wow the press either at home or abroad.\nAlmost everyone liked the concept but suggested that the end product emphasized\nstyle-over-substance. They wrote that the story and characters weren\u2019t well\ndeveloped and that at times they felt like they were watching a music video. It\nfeatures Patrick Tam, Jade Leung, Jeana Ho, Lin Min Chen, Hidy Yu and Jadie\nLin.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHABIT<\/strong> \u2013 Set in Los Angeles, this dark comedy begins\nwith a party girl and her friends hooking up with a washed-up Hollywood actor.\nThe lead\u2019s new beau decides to recruit her for his illegal drug smuggling\noperation. Things quickly go south and the ladies soon find themselves on the\nrun from both hoods and cops. To escape, the young woman and her friends decide\nto disguise themselves as nuns\u2026 but for how long can they keep their elaborate rouse\ngoing? There haven\u2019t been too many notices for this picture so far, but the\nones that have appeared online haven\u2019t been promising. Reviews suggest that the\nmovie\u2019s gags feel obvious and the story meanders pointlessly, resulting in a\nfrustrating experience. Some even suggest that the entire feature may have been\ncompletely improvised. Bella Thorne,\nGavin Rossdale, Libby Mintz, Andreja Pejic, Hana Mae Lee and Ione Skye headline\nthe film. <\/p>\n\n\n\nHOW IT ENDS<\/strong> \u2013 With an unstoppable, world-ending\nmeteorite hurtling towards Earth, a young woman from Los Angeles decides to\nmake the best of her final day on the planet. She decides to head out to an\nend-of-the-world shindig, but gets sidetracked and encounters amusing\ndifficulties as she tries to get there. Along the way, the lead meets several\neccentric characters. This indie comedy earned more positive write-ups than\nnegative ones by a margin of about two to one. Those who didn\u2019t care for the\npicture called it excessively quirky and thought that the mix of drama and\ncomedy didn\u2019t sit well. Still, most commented that while the story had an\nepisodic structure, enough of the segments were entertaining enough to keep\nthem engaged. The film stars Zoe Lister-Jones, Cailee Spaeny, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Fred Armisen, Bradley\nWhitford and Olivia Wilde.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLANSKY <\/strong>\u2013 Based on the real-life figure, this drama\nfollows a down-on-his-luck reporter who stumbles upon an incredible story. He\nreceives a call from reclusive, aging \u201cMob\u2019s Accountant\u201d Meyer Lansky, who is\nstill being pursued by the FBI for untold millions of dollars in missing funds.\nThey meet and the criminal decides to open up to the journalist, revealing\ndetails about his life as a member of Murder Inc. and the National Crime\nSyndicate. This biopic split the press right down the middle. Half of them said\nthe film offered some interesting moments but felt forced, cliched and didn\u2019t\nmake a lasting impression. The same number said that while flawed, the\nperformances were top-notch the film presented a few new tidbits about its\nsubject\u2019s life. The cast includes Harvey Keitel, Sam Worthington, John Magaro\nand Minka Kelly.<\/p>\n\n\n\nPETER RABBIT 2: THE RUNAWAY<\/strong> \u2013 The famous Beatrix\nPotter children\u2019s character returns in this follow-up to the 2018 hit. Picking up from the previous adventure, the\nadventurous and bored lead rabbit decides to take a vacation from those he\nknows and venture to the big city. He meets various strange characters and gets\nhimself into plenty of mischief, while his friends and family search for him.\nPeter must ultimately decide whether or not the chaotic metropolis is the right\nfit for him. Critics were generally upbeat towards this family feature. A\nnumber of them claimed the sequel wasn\u2019t as clever or funny as the original and\nfelt like a quick cash-grab for the film producers. However, the majority\nthought it was entertaining and noted that the human co-stars were the best\npart of the show. It features the voices of James Corden, Elizabeth Debicki and\nMargot Robbie, alongside on-camera talent Rose Byrne, Domhnall Gleeson and\nDavid Oyelowo.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt\u2019s another busy week for cult and classic movie fans.\nArrow video get the ball rolling with their Blu-ray release of Blind Beast<\/em>\n(1969). It\u2019s a Japanese feature about a blind sculptor who kidnaps women and\nkeeps them prisoner in his enormous studio. Besides the upgraded picture\nquality on this hard-to-find feature, the disc includes an introduction to the\nfilm from a movie critic, a film historian commentary, as well as a video essay\nabout the title and some of the hidden meanings in the story. It also includes\npublicity materials like a trailer and an image gallery. <\/p>\n\n\n\nYou can also pick up a Blu-ray of Eloy de la Iglesia\u2019s\nnotorious Spanish genre film, The Cannibal Man<\/em> (1972). Considered\nmisunderstood during its initial release, the story involves a worker at a meat\nprocessing plant who develops psychotic tendencies and begins to murder those\naround him. Many have noted that the disturbing features subtle commentary on\nthe horrors of living in Spain under ruler Francisco Franco (who was still in\npower when the movie was shot). The high-definition upgrade includes for the\nInternational and Extended Spanish versions of the film, a featurette on the\ndirector, a discussion with a Spanish critic on the title, deleted scenes and\nthe original theatrical trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd Arrow have also been upgrading some of their previously\nreleased Blu-ray titles. This week, they are giving The Cat o\u2019 Nine Tails<\/em>\n(1971) a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d that includes the original Blu-ray and extras\nalongside a new 4K Ultra HD disc, presenting this classic from Dario Argento (Deep\nRed<\/em>, Suspiria<\/em>) with even sharper and more dynamic picture quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBlue Underground also have a major \u201cLimited Edition\u201d title\ncoming your way. Two Evil Eyes<\/em> (1990) is a two-part anthology of Edgar\nAllan Poe stories by George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead<\/em>, Creepshow<\/em>,\nDawn of the Dead<\/em>, Day of the Dead<\/em>) and Dario Argento. Starring\nAdrienne Barbeau and a disturbingly effective, tightly-wound Harvey Keitel, the\nmovie wasn\u2019t a hit during its original run. However, it has unsettling moments\nand has developed a large cult following over the years. This flick is now\nbeing released fully restored in 4K Ultra HD and comes with a regular Blu-ray\nfull of special features. The extras include a commentary from an Argento\nauthority, interviews with the directors, cast, crew members and just about\neveryone involved in the project, a look at the effects work and a tour of\nmake-up legend Tom Savini\u2019s home. This Blu-ray also comes with a special\nembossed slipcover for its first pressing. If you\u2019re a horror fan and have the\nset-up to enjoy 4K products, you\u2019ll likely be impressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMVD are also delivering some fun genre films on Blu-ray. The\nfirst is a \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d of The Dark<\/em> (1979), which stars William\nDevan, Cathy Lee Crosby and Richard Jaeckel as acquaintances who discover an\nevil alien menace readying take over the world. This disc features a commentary\nwith both the director and producer, a separate interview with the filmmaker\nand the score composer, as well as a theatrical trailer. For those who enjoy\npromotional art, it also comes with a collectible mini-poster for the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThey also have the effective low-budget creeper, One Dark\nNight<\/em> (1982). This movie follows a group of sorority sisters (including Meg\nTilly) who are forced into spending the night in a mortuary. After they arrive,\nthey find themselves being attacked by an undead figure in the building has\nmystical powers. It\u2019s a fun genre film and the new Blu-ray is jam-packed with\nbonuses. You\u2019ll get two commentary tracks with director\/co-writer Tom\nMcLoughlin (Friday the 13th<\/sup> Part VI: Jason Lives<\/em>). One\nfeatures the moviemaker with the producer. In the second, he and the other\nco-writer watch and discuss how they wrote the story. It also contains seven\ninterviews with various cast and crew members, an alternate Director\u2019s Cut of\nthe film, behind the scenes footage, a photo gallery and promotional materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLooking something with a more humorous bent? Shout! Factory\nare presenting a Blu-ray of The Oh, God! Collection<\/em>. These movies\nstarred comic George Burns as an elderly but sharp-witted God trying to communicate\nwith ordinary humans struggling in life. The actor also takes on the role of Satan\nin the third film in the series. You\u2019ll get Oh, God!<\/em> (1977), Oh, God!\nBook II<\/em> (1980) and Oh, God! You Devil<\/em> (1984) in high definition,\nalong with extras like new critic and theologian commentary tracks and\ninterviews with various cast and crew members. The first title also includes an\narchived commentary with the film\u2019s director, Carl Reiner (The Jerk, The Man\nwith Two Brains<\/em>, All of Me<\/em>) and an episode of The Johnny Carson\nShow<\/em> featuring the director and cast. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThis distributor also has a Blu-ray of A Return to\nSalem\u2019s Lot<\/em> (1987), a sequel of sorts to the Stephen King story and 1979 TV\nmini-series. It involves a traveling father and son who arrive in a small town\nand find it overrun with vampires. King wasn\u2019t involved in this sequel, but\ncompletists who own the fantastic 1979 official adaptation may want this\nfeature as well. It arrives on disc with a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nKino are always delivering classic films and hidden gems on\ndisc. This week they are putting out The Clockmaker of St. Paul<\/em> (1974)\non Blu-ray. It\u2019s a French film about a seemingly timid clockmaker whose son is\non the run for murder. This movie includes a new introduction with admirer\nWalter Hill (director of The Warriors<\/em>, 48 Hrs.<\/em>), a commentary\ntrack and multiple archived interviews with the man who made the movie. It also\ncontains a trailer and excerpts from the filmmaker\u2019s memoir.<\/p>\n\n\n\nForbidden Fruit: The Golden Age of the Exploitation\nPicture, Vol. 12<\/em> is the latest Blu-ray containing B-movies. Peek-A-Boo<\/em>\n(1952) and \u201cB\u201d Girl Rhapsody<\/em> (1953) are included in this edition. Both\nof them are films that are about burlesque dancers and offer a snapshot into\nthe era. They come with movie historian commentary tracks and trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\nMoment by Moment<\/em> (1978) is a romantic comedy that\nstars John Travolta as a young drifter who falls for an older socialite (played\nby Lily Tomlin). Thoroughly Modern Millie<\/em> (1967) is a musical with an\nOscar-winning score from director George Roy Hill (Butch Cassidy and the\nSundance Kid<\/em>, The Sting<\/em>, Slap Shot<\/em>) featuring Julie Andrews\nand Mary Tyler Moore. Both Blu-rays includes informative commentary tracks and\npublicity materials and the latter boasts a 4K image restoration of the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThey also have the more recent cult film, Viva<\/em> (2007).\nSet in the 1970s, it involves a suburban housewife who gets caught up the\nsexual revolution of the era. The disc comes with a writer\/director\/star\ncommentary and behind-the-scenes footage of the production. You can also pick\nup a Blu-ray of What\u2019s So Bad About Feeling Good?<\/em> (1968), a comedy about\na contagious virus that sweeps through New York and causes those affected to\nfeel love and happiness. The cast includes George Peppard and Mary Tyler Moore\nand arrives with a 2K restoration of the feature and extras similar to previous\nreleases listed in this paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMoving back to cult cinema, Severin have a few noteworthy Blu-rays. Seemingly timed to tie-in with one of Arrow\u2019s release of The Cannibal Man<\/em>, they have the Eloy de la Iglesia’s Quinqui Collection<\/em>, which contains other titles from the filmmaker. This set comes with Navajeros<\/em> (1980), El Pico<\/em> (1983) and El Pico 2<\/em> (1984). The movies included have been newly remastered from the original camera negative interviews with a cast member and discussions with experts on the titles and their place in cinematic history. No One Heard the Scream<\/em> (1973) is yet another feature from the filmmaker that will be made available. This horror flick follows a call girl who witnesses a murder \u2013 the two actually befriend one another as their lives spiral downward. The Blu-ray includes a new transfer remastered from the camera negative and an interview with a film scholar about the picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWhile Severin are well known for their horror releases, they\nare also presenting a new Blu-ray of the hit romantic comedy, Overboard<\/em>\n(1987). It follows a snobby, yacht-owning socialite who suffers an injury and develops\namnesia, before being taken in by a poor handyman she mistreated. The plot\nlikely wouldn\u2019t fly in today\u2019s social climate, but the chemistry between\nreal-life husband and wife Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn played well with\naudiences of the era and generated plenty of laughs. The movie has received a\nnew 2K picture restoration, comes with an interview with screenwriter Leslie\nDixon (who also wrote Mrs. Doubtfire<\/em> and the 2007 Hairspray<\/em>\nremake), as well as a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCode Red are delivering more B-movie thrills and chills with\nthe Blu-ray of Guyana: Cult of the Damned<\/em> (1979). It\u2019s a 1970\nMexican-American exploitation drama that uses the Jonestown tragedy as its\ninspiration. The movie stars Stuart Whitman as a menacing cult leader and the\ndisc features a 2K master of the movie and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCriterion are presenting a Blu-ray of the Polish classic, Ashes\nand Diamonds<\/em> (1958). This stunning feature from moviemaking legend Andrzej\nWajda (Kanal<\/em>, Man of Marble<\/em>) involves a Polish resistance member\nat the close of World War II who questions the motives of his superiors after\nbeing asked to assassinate a public figure. He must also deal with a complicated\npersonal relationship, as well as issues that arise with the end of German\noccupation and the influx of Russian forces taking control of the country. The\nmovie has been given a 4K restoration and comes with newly adapted subtitles.\nThis Blu-ray also has an audio commentary with a film scholar, a 2005 program\non the film featuring the Wajda and second unit director, newsreel making-of\nfootage and some rare, behind-the-scenes photos and publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFinally, Warner Archive are premiering \u201cPrince of the City\u201d\n(1981) on Blu-ray, which received an Oscar nomination for its screenplay. This\nis a tale about a cop who plays fast and loose with the rules. When he is asked\nto investigate police corruption within his unit, it leads to tension and\nfractures between the lead and his coworkers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
