THE BOSS BABY: FAMILY BUSINESS <\/em>\u2013 This sequel to the\n2017 animated hit is set 30 years after the previous film. The infants from the\noriginal story are now adults. One day, protagonist and new dad Tim discovers\nhis infant is another boss baby, just like his brother was. He calls his sibling\nin for assistance, but the family member has no memory of his sinister past.\nThe two end up consuming a special formula that makes them babies again – they attempt\nto thwart the powerful little girl\u2019s villainous plans. Response towards this\nfollow-up was split. Roughly half of the press called it a cute and funny\nsequel that delivered plenty of amusing gags for the whole family. However, just\nas many found it to be a tiring sugar rush that didn\u2019t strike the same\nemotional chord as the original. The voice cast includes Alec Baldwin, James\nMarsden, Eva Longoria, Jeff Goldblum, Ariana Greenblatt, Jimmy Kimmel and Lisa\nKudrow. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCATCH THE BULLET <\/em>\u2013 A US Marshall gets more than he\nbargained for after a criminal he arrested years ago is released from prison.\nVowing to take revenge, the outlaw and his gang return and kidnap the lawman\u2019s\nson. In order to find his boy, the desperate lead recruits an Indian scout and\na bigoted town deputy. Together, the trio rides into the desert and hunts for\nthe group, exchanging gunfire with the antagonists. It looks like this western\nis premiering on Blu-ray and DVD (and presumably on streaming platforms too).\nAs a result, no one has seen the film and there is no consensus on the its\nquality. Curious parties will have to venture into the wild without knowing\nexactly what they are in for. It features Jay Pickett, Peter Facinelli, Tom\nSkerritt, Mason McNulty and Cody Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCENSOR<\/em> \u2013 A film censor is a person who watches movies\nfor the general public, putting a rating on the content and occasionally\ndemanding cuts if they deem the material too graphic or offensive. This chiller\nfilm details one such figure, a woman with a mysterious past who spends her\ndays imposing edits on horror pictures. She sits down to watch her latest\nassignment and is chilled by the plot\u2019s similarity to a real and traumatic past\nevent involving her sister. The censor\u2019s grasp on reality slowly begins to erode.\nCritics were appropriately disturbed by this British feature. A small contingent\nsaid the movie emphasized form over content and believed that the payoff wasn\u2019t\nsatisfying. Still, the majority were gripped by the story, calling it eerie,\noriginal and very clever. They also said the tale was bolstered by some fine\nperformances by the cast. The movie stars Niamh Algar, Michael Smiley, Nicholas\nBurns and Vincent Franklin. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCRAZY FIST<\/em> \u2013 A mixed-martial arts fighter decides to\ngive up his career after an opponent dies in the ring during an intense battle.\nVowing never to harm another person, the man disappears from public view and\nattempts to live a quiet life running the family business. However, he is\nforced to reassess his plan after he learns that a close friend and fellow\nfighter has died under similar circumstances. In order to learn the truth and\nfind the responsible party, the hero comes out of retirement to take on new\nopponents. This production was shot in China and has been available on the\nHi-Yah! streaming service for some time, but is now arriving on disc. At\npresent, there are barely any reviews for the film available. The cast includes\nGuo Qing, Steve Yoo, Liu Mengke, Collin Chou, Wang Wei and Kai Greene.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHOWLING VILLAGE<\/em> \u2013 Released in its homeland back in\n2019, this Japanese chiller follows a young psychologist who receives word that\nher brother has vanished. She decides to travel to the last place he was seen,\na strange little village in the middle of nowhere with a reputation for being\ncursed. It isn\u2019t long before the woman unearths unsettling details about the\ntown that are connected to her own family history. The press was split down the\nmiddle over this foreign-language feature. Half of them wrote that it was a\ngood-looking but otherwise unremarkable creeper that didn\u2019t send enough chills\ndown the spine. Just as many thought that the atmosphere and visuals were provocative\nenough to keep them intrigued and involved in the story. Ayaka Miyoshi, Ry\u00f4ta\nBand\u00f4 and Renji Ishibashi headline the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\nTHE HUMAN FACTOR<\/em> \u2013 This documentary chronicles the\nUnited States\u2019 30-year-effort to try and secure peace between nations in the Middle\nEast (specifically, Israel and its neighbors). Various negotiators are\ninterviewed and give their perspectives on the last few decades, including\ntheir failures and successes on the job. They also discuss the future of the\nregion and what needs to occur in order to create harmony between various\nopposing groups. Response towards this non-fiction feature was almost uniformly\nupbeat. There were a few who didn\u2019t think the research presented was detailed\nenough and thought the filmmaker\u2019s one-side viewpoint wasn\u2019t to the benefit of\nthe feature. Yet all others complimented the movie as being gripping and\nrequired viewing for those wanting to know more about the region and its\ncomplicated history.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHUNTERS<\/em> \u2013 After a deadly virus ravages the world, a\nheroic soldier is assigned to protect a group of refugees who have been dropped\noff at his base. He does his best to share his dwindling supplies with the new\narrivals, but all of their lives are put at risk by the sudden and unexpected\narrival of mutant creatures. They try to fight off the assault and avoid being\ndevoured until help arrives. At present, almost nothing is known about this\nindependent genre picture. It\u2019s debuting on disc this week via the Shout!\nFactory line, but no one has seen it yet and there are currently no write-ups\nfor the feature. At least there is a familiar name in the cast with Ian Ziering\n(one of the stars of the TV-series Beverly Hills, 90210<\/em> and the lead in\nthe Sharknado<\/em> cable movie series) taking on the protagonist role. It\nalso features Phil Burke and Nicole Craner.<\/p>\n\n\n\nMASQUERADE<\/em> \u2013 An eleven-year-old is left at home for\nthe evening with a babysitter after her wealthy, art broker parents head out\nfor the evening. Later that night, masked home invaders break-in, intending to\nsteal a priceless work of art. The child tries to avoid capture and delay their\nprogress as she waits for her mom and dad to return home. This thriller sounds\nlike Home Alone<\/em> with a decidedly darker slant. Unfortunately, critics\nweren\u2019t particularly taken by what they saw. A couple of reviewers thought that\nthe cast were good and that the ending worked well enough to earn the movie a\nmodest recommendation. Everyone else stated that the story was full of plot\nholes and was unable to generate any suspense. They also noted that it closed a\nridiculous plot twist that was difficult to buy into. The feature stars Bella\nThorne, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Skyler\nSamuels, Mircea Monroe and Austin Nichols.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOUT OF DEATH<\/em> \u2013 A woman invites her ex-cop uncle out\nto a cabin to enjoy some relaxing scenery. One morning, she goes out for a jog\nand witnesses a pair of officers involved in a drug-trading operation. The cops\nimmediately arrest and attempt to frame the lady for the killing. Thank\ngoodness her uncle wanders in at just the right time, helping her to escape.\nThe pair attempt to collect evidence that will not only take down the crooked\ncops, but the town mayor. At present, this action flick has been universally\npanned by the press. Reviewers thought that the concept had potential, but that\nthe story ultimately progressed in a routine and dull manner. They also noted\nthat it wasted a good cast and that the performers themselves looked bored by\nwhat they were doing. The movie stars Jaime King, Bruce Willis, Lala Kent, Kelly\nGreyson and Michael Snow. <\/p>\n\n\n\nSTRAIGHT OUTTA NOWHERE: SCOOBY-DOO! MEETS COURAGE THE COWARDLY\nDOG \u2013 The title of this direct-to-DVD animated feature teams up two popular Warner\nBros. children\u2019s properties. After Scooby gets lost and arrives in the town of\nNowhere, Kansas, he meets Courage the Cowardly Dog. The pooches begin seeing strange,\nsupernatural figures\u2026. specifically, giant cicadas rampaging through the town.\nShaggy, Daphne, Fred and Velma soon arrive and try to determine why there are\nenormous insects and who is responsible for them. Alas, no one has seen this\nflick at present and so there are currently no reviews available for it.\nAccording to release details, the DVD may also include a few episodes from a recent\nScooby-Doo! series. The voice cast includes Frank Welker, Grey DeLisle, Matthew\nLillard, Kate Micucci, Marty Grabstein, Thea White and Jeff Bergman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ZOLA \u2013 Based on a series of popular tweets, this\ncomedy\/drama follows a Detroit waitress who befriends one of her customers. The\nlead is invited to take a trip to Florida with the female patron and enjoy some\ndancing and partying. It all stars out as fun, but the situation rapidly\ndeteriorates as the pair become mixed up with a pimp, an idiot boyfriend,\nTampa-area gangsters and other bizarre figures. Most enjoyed this unique little\nindependent effort. A small contingent complained that the movie was stylish,\nbut that its characters weren\u2019t well developed and that some of the scenarios\nmissed the mark. Still, the general consensus was that the leads were engaging.\nThey also thought the movie oozed charm and fun, while also providing the odd\nuncomfortable but effective shock. It features Taylour Paige, Riley Keough, Nicholas\nBraun, Ari’el Stachel and Nelcie Souffrant<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blasts from the Past!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt\u2019s also a wonderful week for older features getting\nhigh-definition upgrades. If you enjoy goofy horror B-movies from the 1950s,\nArrow Video have you covered with Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam\nKatzman<\/em>. The set contains the entertainingly kooky picture, Creature with\nthe Atom Brain<\/em> (1955), which involves a mad scientist using atom-powered\nzombies to take over the world. The Werewolf<\/em> (1956) is an engagingly\nsilly lycanthrope film, while Zombies of Mora Tau<\/em> (1957) is notable for\nhaving a story that features underwater zombies guarding a treasure aboard a\nsunken ship. The Giant Claw<\/em> (1957) features a massive and amusingly ugly\nbird terrorizing planes in the sky. None of the flicks are amazing cinema, but\nall of them are great fun for cheesy movie fans!<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou\u2019ll get high-definition presentations with upgraded\npicture quality on all four titles, an 80-page collector\u2019s book with new\nwriting about the movies and two posters with newly commissioned artwork. The\ndiscs themselves include introductions to all the titles, as well as film\nhistorian commentary tracks. In addition, the set comes with a visual essay\nabout each movie with interesting facts and an analysis of the themes and\nelements featured. Of course, this release also comes with publicity and\nadvertising materials for the flicks. Additionally, there are abbreviated 8mm\nshorts of two of the movies. In all, this sounds like a great set worth picking\nup. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shout! Factory are delivering a remarkable, fan-favorite horror picture that has been out-of-print for far too long and has never been released on Blu-ray. Alone in the Dark<\/em> (1982) follows three lunatics (played by Jack Palance, Donald Pleasence and Martin Landau who escape from an asylum and go on the rampage, eventually targeting their new doctor. It\u2019s actually an effective, darkly funny film and the lead actors are an absolute blast to watch. Most viewers likely won\u2019t be able to stop saying, \u201cI want the hat!\u201d for a long while after watching this picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThis Collector\u2019s Edition Blu-ray arrives with a 2K scan of\nthe inter-positive and features an interview with director Jack Sholder (who\nalso served as the man behind the camera on A Nightmare on Elm Street 2:\nFreddy\u2019s Revenge <\/em>and the underrated sci-fi\/action flick, The Hidden<\/em>).\nIt also comes with a featurette on the film locations, a movie critic\ncommentary, an archived audio track with the director, an interview with the\npunk band who appear at the close of the film, a discussion with co-star Carol\nLevy and all kinds of trailers, TV spots, radio ads and stills. <\/p>\n\n\n\nA couple of weeks back, Shout! began re-releasing Blu-rays\nfrom Laika studios, who are responsible for some incredible animated features.\nThis week, the distributor is presenting the Academy Award nominated fable, Kubo\nand the Two Strings<\/em> (2016), in addition to ParaNorman <\/em>(2012), a\nwonderfully cute, horror-themed tale. Both of these discs come with all the\nbonuses that were on previous discs, as well as some new featurettes that\npresent all the storyboards for the feature. You\u2019ll also get extras that detail\nthe animator\u2019s work on the characters and stop-motion puppets used in the\nproduction. Sounds like another excellent disc and hopefully we\u2019ll get an\nupgraded Blu-ray of Missing Link<\/em> (2019), Laika\u2019s most recent title, in\nthe near future. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe distributor is also presenting the Japanese animated\ncult feature Perfect Blue<\/em> (1997) on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a pop star and\nTV actress whose reality begins to fracture as her popularity rises. You\u2019ll get\na new remastered presentation of the picture, a lecture on the movie and\ninterviews with the voice cast. The disc also comes with footage from the\nrecording sessions of some of the songs used in the feature. And this release features\ncast and crew interviews and publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\nKino also have some noteworthy Blu-rays coming your way. The thriller Arabesque<\/em> (1966) stars Gregory Peck as a man hired to decipher a secret message sent to an oil magnate. Sophia Loren plays the female lead. This \u201cSpecial Edition\u201d provides a film historian commentary, a featurette on the movie\u2019s score, multiple trailers and TV spots as well as a poster gallery. The company is also putting out Bluebeard<\/em> (1963), an extremely dark French horror\/comedy about a serial killer. Based on a shocking true story, the disc contains a 4K restoration from the original camera negative, a film expert commentary, as well as a few trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\nAdditionally, they have Blue Panther<\/em> (1965), a French\nEurospy romp inspired to some degree by the popularity of the James Bond\ncharacter. This title involves a secret agent trying to prevent a mad doctor\nfrom releasing a deadly virus. The Blu-ray contains a 4K restoration of the film,\na commentary with movie authorities and some trailers. And Kino are releasing a\nBlu-ray of Rififi in Paris<\/em> (1966), aka The Upper Hand<\/em>, a crime\nmovie about gold smugglers. Despite the title, this does not appear to be a\ndirect sequel to the legendary 1955 French crime film, Rififi<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCriterion are delivering the Oscar-nominated drama, Mona\nLisa<\/em> (1986) in high definition. Directed and co-written by Neil Jordan (The\nCompany of Wolves<\/em>, The Crying Game<\/em>, Interview with the Vampire<\/em>,\nOndine<\/em>, Byzantium<\/em>, Greta<\/em>), it stars Bob Hoskins as an\nex-con who gets a job driving for a call girl. Eventually, he begins to develop\naffection towards the young woman. Jordan has supervised the Blu-ray transfer\nhimself and the disc features an archival commentary and lengthy talk with the\nfilmmaker and Hoskins. It also has a new conversation with the director and a\ndiscussion with the movie\u2019s screenwriter. <\/p>\n\n\n\nCode Red always do a solid job at finding and presenting hard-to-find and obscure titles on Blu-ray. This week, they are presenting The French Conspiracy<\/em> (1972) aka The Assassination<\/em>, a French\/Belgian\/German political thriller about a North African rebel activist and leader who is being hunted by enemies from his homeland. This movie is arriving on disc with a 4K restoration and it includes the original French version and English dubbed cut of the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Devil in Maddalena<\/em> (1971) aka Maddalena<\/em> is\narriving courtesy of One 7 Movies. It is considered a controversial and hard-to-come-by\nYugoslavian\/Italian coproduction. The story details a woman who begins to\ntorment and flirt with a priest, questioning his profession and vow of\ncelibacy. The film\u2019s score was composed by Academy Award-winner Ennio\nMorricone. This release doesn\u2019t offer many extras, but the film has been fully\nrestored from the original negative for Blu-ray. <\/p>\n\n\n\nOn a completely different note, those who enjoy\nintentionally silly horror flicks may enjoy Paramount\u2019s new 4K edition of Hansel\n& Gretel: Witch Hunters<\/em> (2013), starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma\nArterton as weapon-wielding adult versions of the famous fairy tale characters.\nIn addition to a 4K Ultra HD version of the movie, the set includes a digital\ncopy of the film and a regular Blu-ray of the title with all of the previously\nreleased extras. <\/p>\n\n\n\nSony have a Blu-ray of Walk on the<\/em> Wild Side<\/em>\n(1962), a period drama with Jane Fonda and Laurence Harvey that is set during\nthe 1930s. It\u2019s about a man searching for his long-lost sweetheart, whom he\nsuspects is now living in a New Orleans brothel. The protagonist is helped by a\nfree-spirited young woman (played by Fonda) who begins to form a close bond\nwith him. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWarner Bros. are presenting a new updated version of one of\ntheir most beloved titles. They have a 4K Ultra + Blu-ray + digital set of The\nShawshank Redemption<\/em> (1994), with improved picture quality on the 4K\nedition, along with the previously released regular 2008 2K Blu-ray with all of\nthe excellent, if already familiar, bonuses. For those who weren\u2019t around when\nthe movie was originally released, it was nominated for 7 Oscars (although it\ndidn\u2019t end up winning any) and is currently the highest rated movie of all time\nby IMDB users.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFinally, the Warner Archive line of made-to-order Blu-rays\n(that are available to order through Amazon) have a new title being offered to\ncustomers. Santa Fe Trail<\/em> (1940) is a war movie\/western that stars Errol\nFlynn and Ronald Reagan as soldiers squaring off against a violent\nanti-abolitionist revolutionary. The feature was directed by Michael Curtiz\n(The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca, Mildred Pierce, White Christmas).<\/p>\n\n\n\nYou Know, For Kids!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nKids certainly have plenty of material to choose from this\nweek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
