GAIA<\/strong> \u2013 This South African feature involves a park\nranger doing rounds deep in a primordial forest. She unexpectedly encounters a\nman and his son in a remote cabin who live off the grid and have devised their\nown religion. The pair warn of strange monsters that are about to emerge from\nthe wild and wipe out humanity. Disbelieving at first, her feelings change when\nthe cabin is attacked by these horrifying creatures. Critics were disturbed by\nwhat they saw and gave the movie some praise. A small portion described the\nfilm as being style-over-substance and thought that the story was difficult to\nfollow. Still, the majority found it scary. They complimented the make-up\neffects and thought it also offered plenty of food for thought. The movie is arriving\non shelves as a DVD exclusive. Monique Rockman, Carel Nel, Alex\nvan Dyk and Anthony Oseyemi headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\nGOD OF WAR II <\/strong>\u2013 Also known as Legend of Lv Bu<\/em>\nin its homeland, this period fable follows a remarkable warrior who was trained\nas a child under a ruthless sorceress but has no memory of these experiences.\nNow serving as a general under a feared warlord, his past begins to resurface\nafter a long-lost love suddenly appears at his door. Suddenly realizing that he\nhas been committing horrible acts for terrible people, the lead must figure out\nhow to escape from the warlord\u2019s influence and fight back against the ruler. According\nto some sources, this feature originally aired as a TV-movie in China. There\nare currently no reviews available for the picture in this part of the world,\nso interested parties will have to simply take a chance on it and hope for the\nbest. The cast includes Charles Lin, Yuxi Liu and David Wu.<\/p>\n\n\n\nHAUNT<\/strong> \u2013 A young woman who is dealing with an abusive\nex-boyfriend and a traumatic past decides to go out and enjoy Halloween with\nher closest friend. The pair meet a couple of guys and decide to visit an\nattraction billed as an \u201cextreme\u201d haunted house. In the end, the site turns out\nto be far scarier than advertised. All of the attendees see their own worst\nfears come to life and find themselves being picked off one by one. The press\ndidn\u2019t mind what they saw and thought genre fans would appreciate this title.\nSome complained that it felt like a patchwork of other recent horror franchises\nand didn\u2019t stand out on its own merits. Still, the majority complimented the\nfilm as being tense and described the screenplay (penned by the writers of A\nQuiet Place<\/em>) as being above average. It features Katie Stevens, Will\nBrittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Caldwell and Shazi Raja. <\/p>\n\n\n\nI CARRY YOU WITH ME <\/strong>\u2013 Based on a true story, this\ndrama details an aspiring chef and a teacher from Mexico who fall in love. The\ntwo men decide that their best chance for a happy life together may be in the\nUnited States. Hoping to secure citizenship and then get his partner across the\nborder, viewers witness several years pass as the chef\u2019s long and difficult\njourney progresses. Critics responded very positively to this story. There were\nonly a tiny number of negative responses who called the film well-intentioned\nbut blunt and obvious in its delivery. Everyone else thought the performers\nwere exceptional and the message was inspiring. They were also intrigued by how\nthe movie attempted to meld different film styles to different parts of the\nstory. Armando Espitia, Christian Vazquez, Michelle Rodr\u00edguez and \u00c1ngeles Cruz\nheadline the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\nLADY OF THE MANOR<\/strong> \u2013 This comedy involves a struggling\nwoman who spends most of her time delivering drugs for her boyfriend and\nwondering what to do with her life. After the relationship sours, the desperate\nlead finds a quick job working as a tour guide at a nearby historic site. She\nis shocked to encounter a female ghost haunting the property who died in 1875.\nThe two become fast friends, sharing their troubles and trying to help each\nother deal with their unique personal problems. This feature is making its\ndebut on disc and so there aren\u2019t any write-ups for it yet. However, a few\nonline reviews have appeared from bloggers who may have managed to get a sneak\npeek. They called it a funny little flick with entertaining performances. The\nmovie does have an intriguing concept and an excellent cast that includes\nMelanie Lynskey, Judy Greer, Justin Long, Luis Guzman, Ryan Phillippe and\nPatrick Duffy.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLAST CALL<\/strong> \u2013 A successful real estate developer is\ncalled back home to attend the funeral of a family member. He runs into old\nacquaintances who are less-than-hospitable, delivering verbal jabs at his fancy\njob and lifestyle. Things get even more heated when a business opportunity\narises in town that could result in the tearing down of an iconic local bar.\nThe lead must decide whether to redevelop his old neighborhood or try to\npreserve it. This comedy was not well liked by reviewers. In fact, at this time\nof writing there still hasn\u2019t been a positive review. All articles asserted\nthat the characters weren\u2019t very well written or likable, also noting that the\nattempts at humor fell flat. At present, a Blu-ray release hasn\u2019t been\nscheduled and the feature will only be available on DVD. It stars Jeremy Piven,\nTaryn Manning, Zach McGowan, Jack McGee, Bruce Dern, Jamie Kennedy, Cathy\nMoriarty and Cheri Oteri.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTHE POWER<\/strong> \u2013 Set in 1974, this tale follows a trainee\nnurse at a London hospital. When a planned blackout occurs, she is left onsite\nto care for the empty facility. The nurse wanders the halls, only to discover a\nterrifying and potentially supernatural secret hidden within the building. Streaming\nservice Shudder picked up the distribution rights for this independent horror\nfilm from the UK. The outlet is now releasing an exclusive DVD of the film for\nthose who want to own a hard copy. Reaction towards the movie was quite positive.\nA small handful of reviewers were disappointed and complained that there simply\nweren\u2019t enough scares elicited from the material. However, far more asserted\nthat it was a simmering and effective feminist horror flick with a memorable\nclimax. The cast includes Rose Williams, Amy Beth Hayes and Diveen Henry.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSIBYL<\/strong> \u2013 A psychotherapist feeling unfulfilled with\nwork decides to quit her profession and become an author. It isn\u2019t long before\nshe suffers from writer\u2019s block and doesn\u2019t know what to do with herself. When\na friend who works as an actress calls to complain about having an affair with\na co-star behind the back of her director husband, the protagonist sees the\nsituation as inspiration for her work and gets into the middle of the awkward\nsituation. This French\/Belgian foreign-language drama\/comedy received mixed reviews\nin North America. Almost half said the lead wasn\u2019t very relatable and the film\ncame across as surprisingly dry and bland. Slightly more thought that the\nperformances were great and that there were some clever observations about\nrelationships among the story\u2019s more predictable elements. This is a DVD-only\nrelease that stars Virginie Efira, Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos and Gaspard Ulliel.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTHE VIGIL<\/strong> \u2013 After the passing of an elderly woman in a\nBrooklyn Hasidic community, a young man is assigned against his will to serve\nas an overnight watchman\/guardian for the deceased. He arrives at the home,\nonly to experience odd and eerie phenomena. The lead begins to learn that he\npossesses strange, supernatural gifts and discovers a malevolent force in the\nhome whom he must do battle with. Response was very positive towards this\nindependent chiller. A handful of critics thought that while the setting was unique,\nthe story only presented familiar and ineffective ghost story tropes. However,\nthe majority were very impressed by what was accomplished on such a small\nbudget and called it a claustrophobic and scary feature. The cast includes Dave\nDavis, Fred Melamed, Menashe Lustig and Malky Goldman. <\/p>\n\n\n\nVIOLATION<\/strong> \u2013 This genre film details a woman going\nthrough a bitter and ugly separation. She returns home to recover and spend\ntime with family members. However, something occurs during her stay that leads\nthe main character to develop extreme feelings of betrayal and anger. She\ndecides to act out and take revenge on her relatives and friends.\nUnfortunately, there are unexpectedly horrific consequences to her actions and she\nbegins to suffer a psychological breakdown. The press gave this independent\nfeature high marks. A portion of write-ups suggested that while it was well-intentioned,\nthe final results disappointed and that some story elements were at odds and\nprovided no resolution. Still, the consensus was that the film had a potent,\nangry energy that made it compelling viewing. It features Madeleine Sims-Fewer, Anna Maguire and Jesse LaVercombe.<\/p>\n\n\n\nBLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt\u2019s another excellent week for upgrades of studio catalog\ntitles. Arrow Video are releasing a 2-disc \u201cSpecial Edition\u201d Blu-ray of Immoral\nTales<\/em> (1973), an anthology dealing with themes of sexuality. This\ncontroversial film was made by Walerian Borowczyk and individual episodes take\nplace over various time periods. This release comes with two different versions\nof the feature (one of which features an extra segment). It also arrives with\nan introduction from a Borowczyk historian, as well as a collection of\ninterviews with the movie\u2019s production manager and cinematographer. There\u2019s\nalso an archived discussion with the filmmaker on the themes in his movies, a\nvisual essay on the picture and a trailer. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe distributor also has a \u201cSpecial Edition\u201d of the Japanese feature, The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch<\/em> (1968). It\u2019s a well-regarded chiller about a troubled family who move into a home and have visions of a serpentine figure. It is making its debut on Blu-ray for the first time outside of its homeland. The disc includes a movie expert commentary describing the themes and giving background information on the production. It also comes with an interview with a manga and folklore scholar, along with publicity materials. NOTE: THIS TITLE’S RELEASE DATE HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK TO OCTOBER.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nShout! Factory are presenting Steelbooks of some notable\nJapanese animated films from Studio Ghibli. From Up on Poppy Hill<\/em> (2011)\nis a well-regarded coming-of-age tale, while Porco Rosso<\/em> (1992) from\nOscar-winner Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away<\/em>) is about a flying\nace-turned-bounty-hunter whose face has been transformed into that of a pig.\nBoth of these discs come with the same bonuses featured in previous releases,\nbut the packaging is new and improved. <\/p>\n\n\n\nKino also have plenty of new discs on offer. Bird on a\nWire<\/em> (1990) is a hit comedy starring Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn about a man\nunder witness protection who is recognized by an old flame. With his cover\nblown, the two find themselves on the run from gangsters. The Blu-ray presents\nthe feature with a new 2K master, a director commentary and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nDead Men Don\u2019t Wear Plaid<\/em> (1982) is an underrated\nlittle period comedy starring Steve Martin as a detective investigating a\nmysterious disappearance. The movie is shot in black and white and uses\npre-existing clips from about 17 classic film noirs and crime pictures,\nallowing the star to interact with and have conversations with the likes of\nHumphrey Bogart and James Cagney. The results are quite amusing. This Blu-ray\ncomes with a film historian commentary, multiple radio spots, TV commercials as\nwell as a pair of fun trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\nLooking for some action? Golden Needles<\/em> (1974)\nfeatures Joe Don Baker and Jim Kelly as desperate individuals hunting down a mystical\nChinese statue that may restore the youth of its possessor. The picture has\nbeen given a new 2K master and arrives with a movie expert commentary and loads\nof publicity materials. The David Janssen western Macho Callahan<\/em> (1970)\narrives on Blu-ray with a 4K restoration. This release includes a commentary\nfrom with western authority and filmmaker Alex Cox (Repo Man<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\nIf thrillers are more to your liking, you can pick up Masquerade<\/em>\n(1988) on Blu-ray. This picture stars Meg Tilly as a woman who falls for the\nwrong man (in this case, a figure played by Rob Lowe). The movie\u2019s director\nprovides a commentary on this disc and it also comes with a trailer. Skullduggery<\/em>\n(1970) is a bizarre adventure film\/courtroom drama with Burt Reynolds. It\u2019s\nabout an explorer who finds man\u2019s ancestors living in the wilds of New Guinea.\nWhen a researcher is murdered, a Neanderthal is put on trial for the crime and\nthe lead must aid the defense. The Blu-ray delivers a 2K transfer of the film,\nalong with a film historian commentary and trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nLionsgate\u2019s Vestron Video line\nhave another new and notable Blu-ray. It\u2019s a \u201cDirector\u2019s Cut\u201d of the horror\npicture, Dementia 13<\/em> (1963), an effective little whodunit. The murder\/mystery\nis set at an Irish estate and the picture marks the directorial debut of\nFrancis Ford Coppola (The Godfather<\/em>, The Godfather Part II<\/em>, Apocalypse\nNow<\/em>, The Outsiders<\/em>, Bram Stoker\u2019s Dracula<\/em> and many more).\nIt\u2019s a stylish little movie and this disc marks the first time it is being\npresented as Coppola originally intended. The movie has received a 4K\nrestoration and arrives with an introduction and feature commentary with the\nfamous filmmaker. Extras also include a prologue that was shot as a test for\nthe film.<\/p>\n\n\n\nCriterion are presenting a couple of critically acclaimed\ndramas on Blu-ray. The first release is the coming-of-age romance, Love\n& Basketball<\/em> (2000), about a pair of aspiring young players juggling\ntheir desires to be professional athletes with a blooming love affair. Omar\nEpps and Sanaa Lathan star in the feature. The disc features a 4K restoration\nof the film, a commentary recorded in 2000 with the director and Lathan, a new\nmaking-of documentary, an editing featurette, a conversation on the movie\u2019s\nimpact, audition tape excerpts, short films by the director and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThrow Down<\/em> (2004) is a drama set in the neon-drenched\nnightclubs and gambling dens of Hong Kong. It follows the lives of three\ndesperate individuals who become friends and try to help each other survive in\nthis dangerous world. The film has received a 4K digital restoration and\ncontains new interviews with the screenwriter, the composer, in addition to a\nmaking-of documentary from 2004 and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nIf you want a kid\u2019s film with a decidedly psychedelic\nstreak, then you can pick up Pufinstuf<\/em> (1970) on Blu-ray courtesy of Code\nRed. It\u2019s a feature film spin-off from the similarly trippy TV show, H.R.\nPufnstuf<\/em>, from Sid and Marty Krofft (The Bugaloos<\/em>, Land of the\nLost<\/em>, Sigmund and the Sea Monster<\/em>). The story follows a boy with a\nmagical flute who ends up on a fantastic island, meeting the unique title\ncharacter and squaring off against an evil witch. The disc comes with a\ntrailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nSeverin are presenting The Dungeon of Andy Milligan<\/em>\n(1965 \u2013 1984) Blu-ray set, which contains 15 horror\/exploitation B-movies (and\nthere are multiple cuts on two of them 17 cuts) made by the filmmaker. As you\nmight have guessed, there are too many flicks to list here, but those\ninterested should note that most of the titles are appearing with new\nrestorations and that the package also comes with numerous extras including\ncommentaries and behind-the-scenes footage. <\/p>\n\n\n\nClassicFlix are presenting International Lady<\/em> (1941) on\nBlu-ray through their Silver Series line. It is an espionage thriller set in\nthe UK during the height of World War II. No word at present whether or not the\ndisc includes any bonus features. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThis is also a busy week for the big studios. The very\nentertaining thriller Breakdown<\/em> (1997) is officially premiering on\nBlu-ray through the \u201cParamount Presents\u201d line. For those unfamiliar with the\nfilm, a husband and wife are traveling through the desert when their car breaks\ndown. A seemingly helpful truckdriver states that he can give the man\u2019s wife a\nride to the nearest diner to call for help. She leaves with the teamster and is\nkidnapped, forcing her spouse to hunt down the villainous driver. Kurt Russell\nand Kathleen Quinlan star, and J.T. Walsh plays the kidnapper. <\/p>\n\n\n\nBesides the elaborate packaging associated with this line,\nthe disc comes with a 4K remaster of the film supervised by director Jonathan\nMostow (U-571<\/em>, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines<\/em>). It contains a\nrecently recorded commentary with Russell and Mostow, in addition to featurettes\non the director, co-star Quinlan and producer Martha de Laurentiis. There\u2019s\nalso an alternate opening that wasn\u2019t used in the final film \u2013 it\u2019s presented\nwith a commentary from the director describing why the bit was eliminated. The\ndisc also comes with a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\nParamount are also releasing some notable catalog titles.\nThey have the basketball-themed drama Blue Chips<\/em> (1994) with Nick Nolte.\nThe studio is also debuting The Crocodile Dundee Trilogy<\/em> Blu-ray set.\nThe original Crocodile Dundee<\/em> (1986) featured Paul Hogan as an Aussie\nfrom the outback trying to make his way in New York. The flick was a smash hit\nworldwide and spawned two sequels. Crocodile Dundee II<\/em> (1988) and Crocodile\nDundee in Los Angeles<\/em> (2001). They are all included in this impressive set.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\nAnd the studio is presenting three more sports-themed titles\non Blu-ray. You can pick up the baseball comedy\/drama Hardball<\/em> (2001) in\nhigh definition. This title features Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane and a very young\nMichael B. Jordan. You can also pick up the Adam Sandler prison-set remake of The\nLongest Yard<\/em> (2005) and the college football comedy, Necessary Roughness<\/em>\n(1991), with Scott Bakula and Sinbad.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThis week, Disney are slated to release an \u201cUltimate\nCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d 4K Ultra HD\/Blu-ray\/Digital copy of Unbreakable<\/em>\n(2000), from writer\/director M. Night Shyamalan. It was the filmmaker\u2019s\nfollow-up to The Sixth Sense<\/em> and this feature still stands as one of his\nbest titles. <\/p>\n\n\n\nDiscount Blu-ray distributor Mill Creek Entertainment are\ndigging into the studio vaults to rerelease some interesting movies. They have\nthe well-regarded biopic drama, Frost\/Nixon<\/em> (2008) and are putting out a\n\u201cDouble-Feature\u201d Blu-ray containing the Brad Pitt drama, Meet Joe Black<\/em> (1998)\nand the romantic-comedy Wimbledon<\/em> (2004), starting Kirsten Dunst and\nPaul Bettany. <\/p>\n\n\n\nWarner Bros. have decided to give one of acclaimed\nmoviemaker Stanley Kubrick\u2019s titles a new upgrade. A Clockwork Orange<\/em>\n(1971) is arriving this week as a 4K Ultra HD\/Blu-ray\/Digital copy. It comes\nwith an even sharper picture along with extras from previous editions,\nincluding a commentary track with lead actor Malcolm McDowell. <\/p>\n\n\n\nThe made-to-order Warner Archive line also has a trio of new\nBlu-rays that can be purchased through Amazon. The Naked Spur<\/em> (1953) with\nJames Stewart and Janet Leigh was nominated for an Academy Award for Best\nWriting and critic Leonard Maltin called it, \u201cOne of the best westerns ever\nmade.\u201d They also are releasing Straight Time<\/em> (1978), which features Dustin\nHoffman playing a burglar on the run from authorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\nFinally, The Window<\/em> (1949) is a great little thriller\nabout a young boy living with his family in a downtown apartment. While playing\non the fire escape, he witnesses his neighbors cleaning up a violent murder.\nThe boy tries to tell his family and local authorities about what he saw.\nUnfortunately, they don\u2019t believe him. After his parents are forced to leave\ntown the following night, the child becomes the target of the killer and must use\nhis wits to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\nYOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThere are a number of great options in kid\u2019s entertainment this\nweek. The Studio Ghibli \u201cSteelbook\u201d titles from Japan may skew slightly older,\nbut they\u2019ve been listed here too for those curious about them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
