<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nAMERICAN NIGHT \u2013 Described as a neo-noir thriller, this tale\ninvolves a rare Andy Warhol painting that unexpectedly appears on the\nunderground market. Over the course of the running time, a wide variety of eccentric\ncharacters attempt to obtain the valuable piece of art. Some of those involved\ninclude a museum curator, an art dealer, a stuntman and a wannabe ninja. The\npress disliked this picture intensely. In fact, there are currently no positive\nreviews for the feature. All reviewers wrote that while the film was a polished\npiece of work with a great cast, the writing wasn\u2019t up to snuff, it was overlong\nand didn\u2019t feel like much more than a poor emulation of an old Quentin\nTarantino film. It stars Paz Vega, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Emile Hirsch, Jeremy\nPiven, Michael Madsen and Maria Grazia\nCucinotta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She quickly\ndiscovers that the frontier town is a haven for criminals and cold-blooded\nkillers. After being targeted by one of these nasty characters, a notorious\ngunslinger steps in and helps her. The lead is forced to spend time with her\nviolent protector and trust his judgment in order to survive the ordeal. There\naren\u2019t a great many reviews for this feature yet, but those that have appeared\nhave been more negative than positive. A few liked the performances enough to\nrecommend the movie, but the majority called the film dull and predictable,\nstating that it also took itself far too seriously. The cast includes Stuart\nTownsend, Scout Taylor-Compton, Thomas Jane, Trace Adkins, Ed Morrone and\nVictoria Pratt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first character introduced fought in\nViet Nam and now serves as a lawyer and advocate for soldiers dealing with\nmental health issues. Another decides to open a coffee shop with an \u201canti-war\u201d\ntheme. Several veterans arrive as customers and also share experiences and\ntrauma during their tours of duty. This independent drama hasn\u2019t been seen by\nmany yet, but early notices have been decent. One write-up stated that the\nmovie didn\u2019t feel authentic and was filled with caricatures. However, a few\nmore have written that the movie was well-intentioned and did a complimentary\njob of addressing the various problems veterans deal with. Danny Glover, Sam\nUnderwood, Prema Cruz and Frankie J. Alvarez headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE EIGHT HUNDRED \u2013 Released in its homeland as Ba Bai, this\nforeign-language war epic from China is set during the brink of World War II.\nEight hundred Chinese soldiers find themselves completely surrounded by\ninvading Japanese forces. After taking refuge in a warehouse in the middle of a\nShanghai battlefield, the group must fight their way to safety. This feature\nwon many awards at various film festivals in the Pacific Rim and impressed\ncritics. One or two complained that the characters weren\u2019t well written and\nthat the story was filled with overused war film cliches. However, most stated\nthat the production design was impressive, the battle scenes were incredible to\nbehold and that the movie successfully displayed the horrors of war and the\nsacrifices made by soldiers. It features Zhi-zhong Huang, Hao Ou, Yi Zhang and Chen Yao. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nLAIR \u2013 A family suffering from inner turmoil find themselves\nembroiled in even more trouble after deciding to help a local man\u2019s efforts to\noverturn his friend\u2019s murder conviction. As it turns out, the odd acquaintance\nbelieves that he will free his pal by proving that supernatural forces were\ninvolved in the crime. As the family become involved in the investigation, they\nbegin facing demons metaphorically and literally that force them to deal with\ntheir own personal issues. There have only been a few reviews for this title so\nfar and the response has been mixed. One called the film effective and\nclaustrophobic. Others suggested that the story didn\u2019t really go anywhere and\nthe final results of this chiller were underwhelming. It features Oded Fehr,\nCorey Johnson, Emily Haigh and Alexandra Gilbreath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nLITTLE FISH \u2013 This science-fiction drama picture is set\nduring a global pandemic involving a virus that causes people\u2019s memories to\ndisappear. The story follows a romance between two people dealing with the\noutbreak and its effects. As this occurs, viewers witness earlier events in\ntheir lives and how they fell in love. As the film cuts back and forth between\ntime periods, it becomes more and more difficult to determine if they have been\ninfected by the virus. Reaction was very positive towards this feature. A small\nnumber found the editing choppy and as a result didn\u2019t find the story\ncaptivating. However, the vast majority suggested that the performances\nexcellent and the plight of the characters was very involving. It stars Olivia\nCooke, Jack O’Connell, Soko, Ra\u00fal Castillo and David Lennon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nMA BELLE, MY BEAUTY \u2013 This US\/France co-production involves\na trio from New Orleans who were once involved in a polyamorous relationship.\nAfter the arrangement falls apart, one person disappears while the other two\nget married and move to France. Two years later, the couple are living an idyllic\nlife. They get a shock when their ex-lover appears at the door hoping to\nrekindle their unique romance. Response was decent towards this drama. About a\nquarter of reviewers complained that the movie was too low-key, didn\u2019t go into\nenough depth with its characters and noted that wasn\u2019t enough tension or\nconflict to sustain interest. Still, the majority found the movie interesting\nand appreciated that it took risks with the story and didn\u2019t offer concrete\nanswers about its chosen subject. They believed the film would inspire\nconversation between viewers. The cast includes Idella Johnson, Hannah Pepper\nand Lucien Guignard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, he makes a deal with the criminal to take on an\nimpossible job in the hopes that it will make up for his sister\u2019s actions. Of\ncourse, instead the lead ends up taking on enemies from all sides. This feature\nis only going to be available on DVD. However, notices for the movie were\npretty decent. A handful said that the action was impressive but that it was\nfull of cliches. However, most thought that the film was fun and had incredible\nstunts that were better than many big-budget action pictures. It features Omid\nZader, Johnny Messner, Bruce Dern and William Katt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things start going wrong and the lead discovers that\nthe man he\u2019s tracking is a former prot\u00e9g\u00e9. The villain is furious over a past disagreement\nwith the protagonist that ruined his career and is determined to exact revenge.\nThe two go head-to-head in a battle to the death. Critics enjoyed this\nforeign-language feature. A few did complain that the story was formulaic and\npredictable. However, everyone else was impressed with the cast, the\nwell-staged fights and called it an excellent throwback to action flicks of\nold. Donnie Yen, Nicholas Tse, Lan Qin, Angus Yeung and Patrick Tam headline\nthe movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nRISEN \u2013 A meteor crashes in a New York farming town, making\nthe surrounding area uninhabitable and killing various lifeforms in its path.\nAn astrobiologist is sent to investigate what might be wiping people and other\norganisms out. She discovers an odd, enormous tree growing from the site of the\nimpact. The lead becomes convinced that the plant is actually a seed from\nanother world and that these and other nearby trees are colonizing the planet. So\nfar, very few have seen this independent feature. Unfortunately, those who have\nseen it haven\u2019t been impressed. One or two thought the movie had enough\ninteresting ideas to earn it a pass, but all others said the pacing was bad and\nthe end result was unexciting. This title will only be available on DVD. The\ncast includes Natalie Rose, Terri Purchase, Nicole Sharrock and Wassim Hawat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE SHOW \u2013 In this British feature written by legendary Watchmen<\/em>\ncomic book writer Alan Moore, an investigator searching for a rare artifact\nfinds himself in a town populated by the supernatural. In order to complete his\nmission, he\u2019s forced to deal with vampires, sleeping beauties, voodoo-practicing\ngangsters, noir private eyes and masked avengers. After dealing with several\nsurreal figures, the lead begins to question his own sanity. The press\ngenerally liked this little fantasy flick. A small contingent found the\ndialogue awkward and didn\u2019t think the movie offered much beyond surface-level\nthrills. But most were far more complementary, calling it entertainingly\nquirky, engaging and populated with memorable characters. It stars Ellie\nBamber, Tom Burke, Richard Dillane, Christopher Fairbank and Alan Moore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n UNCUT GEMS \u2013 This feature follows a New York City jeweler with a serious gambling addiction. After angry debt collectors and others begin questioning his behavior, contacting him and making threats, the protagonist puts all of his efforts into brokering a deal that could save both his business and his life. Reviewers loved this feature when it was originally released at the end of 2019, but the original Blu-ray and DVD wasn’t chock full of extras. Perhaps this is because famed boutique line Criterion are now putting it out (in both a 4K Ultra HD and\/Blu-ray edition as well as a regular Blu-ray package). One or two called the movie so dark that they felt like they were watching a train-wreck. However, all others praised it as an unsettling but gripping feature with a superb lead performance and a memorable ending. Adam Sandler, Julia Fox, Idina Menzel and LaKeith Stanfield headline the film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n THE VILLAGE DETECTIVE: A SONG CYCLE \u2013 It\u2019s amazing what gems\ncan be found in the strangest of places. This documentary tells the story of a\nfisherman off of the coast of Iceland who caught something unexpected in his\nnet at the bottom of the sea. He discovered four reels of a hard-to-come-by\n1969 Russian film called Derevensky Detektiv<\/em>, starring Soviet-era\ncharacter actor Mikhail Zharov. The filmmakers restore the found footage and\ninterweave filmography and interview clips of the movie\u2019s lead actor to show\nhow life can endure through celluloid. Write-ups were excellent for the\nfeature. There were a couple who thought it was edited together in a clumsy\nway, but most called it interesting and a great introduction to a performer\nunknown in this part of the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s also plenty to choose from in regards to older\ntitles. Arrow Video are presenting The Bird with the Crystal Plumage<\/em>\n(1970) in a new 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray package. This landmark Italian \u201cgiallo\u201d\nfilm from Dario Argento (Deep Red<\/em>, Suspiria<\/em>) about a man who\nwitnesses a murder gets an impressive picture upgrade and comes with all of the\nextras from previous editions. They also have a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo\nof the filmmaker\u2019s follow-up, The Cat o\u2019 Nine Tails<\/em> (1971). It\u2019s another\neffective thriller from the director that includes plenty of murder and\nmayhem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Phantom of the Mall: Eric\u2019s Revenge<\/em> (1989) was a\nlow-budget slasher that became something of a staple on the VHS rental market.\nArrow have now secured the rights for a 2-disc Limited Edition Blu-ray release\nof the feature. For those unfamiliar with the movie, it\u2019s about a man whose\nhouse is burned down by a greedy developer who wants to build a shopping plaza there.\nSome time later, the mall opens but the staff and customers find themselves\nhunted by a disfigured avenger. You\u2019ll get three versions of the movie,\nincluding the theatrical cut, the TV cut and a bonus fan (which is a newly recut\nof the movie using footage from the two previous editions). The disc also comes\nwith a director\u2019s commentary, a second track with the producer, a making-of\ndocumentary, alternate and deleted scenes, a mass of publicity materials, the\nscreenplay, a 60-page booklet on the film and plenty more! <\/p>\n\n\n\n MVD Visual are putting out Roy Rogers: His First &\nLast Double Feature<\/em> Blu-ray. It contains the titles Under Western Stars<\/em>\n(1938) and Mackintosh & T.J.<\/em> (1975). The second film in the set\ncontains plenty of extras, like interviews with cast members and a reunion of\nmany of the stars. It also has on-set footage, and even a commentary track\nfeaturing a couple of actors who appear in the other bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! Factory have decided to debut Dracula: Dead and\nLoving It<\/em> (1995) on Blu-ray. This parody of Dracula from writer\/director\nMel Brooks (Young Frankenstein<\/em>, Blazing Saddles<\/em>, Spaceballs<\/em>)\nstars the late, great Leslie Neilson as the title bloodsucker. Brooks\nparticipates in an audio commentary for the movie alongside cast members Steven\nWeber, Amy Yasbeck, Rudy DeLuca and Steve Haberman. The disc also comes with\nfeaturettes, trailers and TV spots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino are presenting a new 4K Ultra HD\/Blu-ray edition of Invasion\nof the Body Snatchers<\/em> (1978). This classic horror flick is just as strong\nas the original movie from 1956 and comes highly recommended. The picture\nupgrade was approved by the director and this release contains all of the\nextras from previous versions (including two commentaries, about 10 featurettes\non the movie, promotional materials and more).<\/p>\n\n\n\n While we don\u2019t usually deal with TV shows in this section of\nthe column, it should be noted that Kino are also putting out a Blu-ray of Night\nGallery: Season 1<\/em> (1969 \u2013 1970). This was another supernatural anthology\nchiller from Rod Serling (creator of The Twilight Zone<\/em>) and it\u2019s great\nto see it getting the high-definition treatment. There are historian commentaries\non all of the episodes as well as a special on the show and how it got chopped\nup and heavily edited whenever it was rerun on television. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Code Red have a Blu-ray of the French comedy sequel, La\nCage aux Folles II<\/em> (1980). The disc has both the original French version\nwith subtitles and an English-language dub, as well as a trailer for the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stingray<\/em> (1978) is an action\/comedy about two young men on the run from drug dealers and, presumably, the law. Dark Force Entertainment are releasing a Blu-ray of a \u201cDirector\u2019s Cut\u201d of the movie. It has been newly remastered and includes a filmmaker commentary, interviews with the director and cast members as well as a Q&A session, music videos, audio recordings, a trailer and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion are presenting one of the greatest films of all\ntime this week. Citizen Kane<\/em> (1941) is appearing on disc in a 4K Ultra\nHD\/Blu-ray edition, or it can also be picked up as just a Blu-ray. This tale\ndetails the life of a publishing tycoon and was based on William Randolph\nHearst. There are too many extras to write about here, but just a few of the bonuses\ninclude multiple audio commentaries, a rarely seen feature-length documentary\non the movie, archival interviews, a selection of radio plays featuring many of\nthe cast members and much, much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The same distributor is also releasing Menace II Society<\/em>\n(1993) in a similar manner, both as a 4K HD disc and Blu-ray of the film, as\nwell as a standalone regular Blu-ray. This story follows a teenager in Watts\nattempting to break free from his bleak surroundings and make a better life for\nhimself. The package includes a new restoration of the \u201cDirector\u2019s cut\u201d, two\naudio commentaries from 1993 featuring directors Albert and Allan Hughes, a\n2009 featurette on the making of the film, new conversations with both\ndirectors and some of the cast, a 1993 discussion with the moviemakers, deleted\nscenes, a film-to-storyboard comparison and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Gemini Entertainment have a couple of Blu-rays that may\nappeal to nature enthusiasts. Acadia Sights & Sounds<\/em> (2009) and Becoming\nAcadia<\/em> (2016) are documentaries focused on the sights and sounds of Acadia\nNational Park in Maine. The first title features various images from the area,\nwhile the second focuses on the history of the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Best Buy and Lionsgate have teamed up to present an\nexclusive 4K \u201cSteelbook Edition\u201d of Terminator 2: Judgment Day<\/em> (1991) which\ncontains all three cuts of the movie presented in the highest possible quality\nand packaged in a sturdy case. It comes with previously released bonuses and a\nnew 55-minute documentary on the film that features Arnold Schwarzenegger,\nEdward Furlong and writer\/director James Cameron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking of steelbooks, Paramount is presenting the hilarious Steve Martin\/John Candy comedy, Planes, Trains & Automobiles<\/em> (1987) on Blu-ray just in time for Thanksgiving. It arrives in the very same kind of heavy, metallic case. And Paramount also have a 4K Steelbook and Blu-ray containing both film versions of The Ten Commandments<\/em> (1923 and 1956).<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re a fan of Woody Allen, you may be excited to see a\ngroup of his movies being released on Blu-ray for the first time in the US by\nQuiver Films. The set is called The Woody Allen Collection<\/em> and it\ncontains Bullets Over Broadway<\/em> (1994), Mighty Aphrodite<\/em> (1995), Everyone\nSays I Love You<\/em> (1996), Celebrity<\/em> (1998), Small Time Crooks<\/em>\n(2000), The Curse of the Jade Scorpion<\/em> (2001), Hollywood Ending<\/em> (2002)\nand Anything Else<\/em> (2003). There are a few lesser works in there, but\nsome fantastic stuff as well \u2013 the first two movies are excellent and Small\nTime Crooks<\/em> is a great deal of fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Severin have a Blu-ray of the British drama All or Nothing<\/em> (2002) from writer\/director Mike Leigh (Secrets & Lies<\/em>, Topsy Turvy<\/em>). Pictured above, it\u2019s an award-winning, all-star effort about three lower-class families struggling to get by in London. It stars Timothy Spall, Lesley Manville, Ruth Sheen, Sally Hawkins and James Corden. The disc features a new scan of the movie as well as interviews with most of the cast and crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Warner Archive are presenting a couple of\nmade-to-order Blu-rays that can be purchased through Amazon.
