Welcome back to another look at new releases on Blu-ray and\nDVD. Once again, t\u2019s a busy edition with plenty of entertainment in a wide\nvariety of genres. So, if you can\u2019t or shouldn\u2019t be heading out to the movies\nthis week, be sure to give one of these titles a try! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE ADDAMS FAMILY 2 \u2013 This sequel to the 2019 animated\nfamily film begins with Morticia and Gomez becoming concerned that their\nchildren will soon grow up and leaving them behind. In order to reaffirm family\nbonds, they decide to pack up a camper and head out with the kids on a lengthy\nholiday. These unusual tourists see the sights and get themselves into all\nkinds of trouble during their travels. Critics were less-than-enthused with\nthis follow-up. About one quarter of them were pleased that the story took the\ncharacters out of their natural element and described the movie as fun.\nHowever, the majority complained that it didn\u2019t do justice to the original\nsource material and came off as a bland and forgettable animated feature. The\nvoice talent includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloe Grace Moretz, Bill\nHader, Nick Kroll, Javon \u201cWanna\u201d Walton, Wallace Shawn, Snoop Dogg and Bette\nMidler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

ANNIE LIVE! \u2013 Based on the comic strip and 1977 Broadway musical,\nthis production aired live on NBC in December of last year. The story follows a\nkind but mistreated girl who is adopted by a billionaire. The nasty, envious\norphanage owner is none-too-pleased about the relationship and comes up with a\nsinister plan to ruin the youngster\u2019s newfound happiness. While this adaptation\ntechnically aired on television, its release seemed a significant enough event\nto warrant a mention in this category. The press also responded favorably\ntowards this production. They wrote that while the live staging caused a few\nminor technical issues, the performances and songs were uniformly great and won\nthem over. The cast includes Celina Smith, Taraji P. Henson, Harry Connick Jr.,\nNicole Scherzinger, Tituss Burgess and Jane Krakowski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE AWAKENER \u2013 Loosely based on a comic book, this Brazilian\npicture from 2018 tells the story of a frustrated ex-special agent with\nmilitary training who decides to take the law into his own hands. He dons a\nmask and becomes a vigilante. The figure focuses his attention on taking down\ncorrupt politicians and businessmen that he knows are responsible for abusing\nthe general public and stealing money from them. This picture was nominated for\na few technical awards in its homeland, including sound and visual effects, but\nit still hasn\u2019t been seen by many in this part of the world. A few online\nreviews have popped up and those haven\u2019t been raves. They claim the film is a\nhammy and over-the-top action opus that doesn\u2019t offer anything new or exciting.\nKiko Pissolato, Tain\u00e1 Medina and Samuel de Assis headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BEANS \u2013 Based on the 1990 Oka Crisis that occurred in\nQuebec, Canada, this coming-of-age tale involves a 12-year-old child in a\nMohawk community. When the Indigenous population starts protesting and uprising\nagainst cruel government officials, it leads to a 78-day stand-off. Over this\nperiod, the youngster is forced to grow up quicker than anticipated and protect\nher territory. Critics were very positive about this feature. A handful of them\nstated that while the event depicted was an important and relevant one, the\nstorytelling was a bit clumsy and left something to be desired. However, the\nmajority commented that the young lead was excellent, the movie dealt honestly\nwith important issues and the final results were compelling and powerful. It\nstars Kiawentiio, Violah Beauvais, Rainbow Dickerson and Joel Montgrand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BEYOND FURY \u2013 This independent British action picture\nfollows a familiar revenge-movie formula. During a night out, an ex-mercenary\nand his pregnant wife are attacked by a group of mobsters. The hoods murder the\nman\u2019s partner and unborn child, but fail to finish him off. After recovering,\nhe decides to make those responsible endure even more pain and suffering than\nhe went through, enacting revenge in the most violent manner possible. There\naren\u2019t many notices available for this title. Those that have popped up suggest\nthat the low-budget movie is reasonably well-produced and the villains are\nsuitably over-the-top. Yet they also say that it may be too graphic and that the\nstory was predictable and cliched. The cast includes Nick Roberts, Giovanni\nLombardi Radice, Dani Thompson and Jeff Stewart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DON\u2019T LET HER IN \u2013 Full Moon Entertainment (who produced the\nlong-running \u201cPuppet Master\u201d and \u201cGingerdead Man\u201d series) are presenting this\nlow-budget horror flick. It\u2019s about a young couple who rent a room out in their\nspacious home. One assumes they don\u2019t end up doing a very detailed background\ncheck on their new tenant, because the seductive figure ends up causing\ntrouble, invading their minds, beds and lives. The film premiered on the Full\nMoon channel on Amazon Prime Video earlier in the year and is now debuting on\ndisc. Reviews online from genre critics say that if you\u2019re a fan of B-movie\nhorror, it\u2019s a decent enough effort. They note that the script should have been\ndeveloped a bit more, but that the cast are good and that the movie was a fun\nto watch. The cast includes Kelly Curran, Lorin Doctor, Austin James\nParker and Cole Pendery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE DRY \u2013 After twenty years in the big city, a federal\nagent returns to his tiny Australian hometown to attend the funeral of his\nchildhood friend. He is told that his old pal allegedly killed his own wife and\nchild before taking his life. After being asked by relatives to look into the\ndeaths, the protagonist reluctantly stays in the area to investigate.\nUnfortunately, his presence raises questions about the disappearance of his\n17-year-old female friend who vanished nearby when he was just a teenager.\nNotices were excellent for this low-key thriller. There were a few who didn\u2019t\nfind the movie or mystery tense enough to keep them hooked. Still, everyone\nelse complimented the photography, mood and performances, stating that the\nmovie was well-acted, suspenseful and gripping from beginning to end. It stars\nEric Bana, Genevieve O\u2019Reilly, Kier O\u2019Donnell, John Polson, Sam Corlett and\nBruce Spence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU \u2013 Inspired by a true story, this\npolitical thriller is set in 1991 during turbulent times. When the capital of\nSomalia is overrun by various rebel groups fighting the military junta, the\nlives of foreigners working at nearby embassies are put at risk. When the North\nKorean and South Korean consulates come under fire, workers from the two\nadversarial nations put aside their differences and try to help each other get\nout of the warzone. The movie earned a great deal of positive press. One or two\nreviewers complained that it didn\u2019t accurately reflect the various conflicts or\npresent authentic characters. Regardless, all others called the movie an\nexciting nailbiter with a couple of incredible escape sequences. They also\nsuggested that the film efficiently handled complex issues like the tension\nbetween North and South Korea. Kim Yoon-seok, Jo In-Sung, Huh Joon-ho and Kim So-jin headline the\nfeature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO \u2013 A shy aspiring fashion designer heads to London to attend university. She has a hard time making friends and ends up moving off campus to a strange old apartment in Soho. Once there, the lead begins having visions of a woman who lived in the same room during the 1960s. The student witnesses disturbing things that influence her work and inspire her to find out what happened to this person. More members of the press liked this psychological thriller than disliked it. About one quarter thought it was stylish but didn\u2019t think the final reveal was satisfying and still had questions about what they saw. However, the majority called it a slick, creepy and compelling exercise and enjoyed the fact that a few small aspects of the story were left open to interpretation. The cast includes Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy, Matt Smith, Diana Rigg, Aimee Cassettari, Rita Tushingham, Michael Ajao and Terence Stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE LAST SON \u2013 A murderous outlaw wanders across the Old\nWest in fear of an ominous warning given to him \u2013 that one of his children will\nultimately kill him. With bounty hunters and a sheriff on his tail, the\ncriminal decides to hunt his adult children down and wipe them out in order to\nend the curse. He starts picking them off one by one as he moves from town to\ntown, but will his mission actually cause the prophecy to be realized? Critics\ndidn\u2019t seem to care about the answer. A small contingent wrote that this was an\ninteresting, grim western with a good lead performance. But many of the write-ups\nfound the main character difficult to relate to and the story lacking in drama,\nsuspense and excitement. It features Sam Worthington, Heather Graham, Thomas\nJane, Machine Gun Kelly and James Landry Hebert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LITTLE GIRL \u2013 This documentary details the life of a\n7-year-old French child named Sasha, who was born as a boy but has always known\nthat she is a girl. The crew follow the reaction of the family to the\nyoungster\u2019s proclamation. It also captures them as try to help her confront\noutdated norms and find acceptance in her small town from both adults and\nfellow students. The non-fiction feature earned uniform raves from reviewers.\nIn fact, there currently are no negative write-ups about the picture. They all\nstate that the film is a sensitive and moving portrait of Sasha, displaying her\nstruggles and small victories in life. The group also suggested that the naturalistic\nfilmic approach used helps paint an accurate and relatable account that will\ntouch anyone who watches it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

RED STONE \u2013 After a teenager sees his brother being\nslaughtered by gangster outfit, a nasty Southern crime boss behind it hires a\ndangerous hit man to wipe out the witness. With the FBI also hoping to find the\nyoungster, the main character rushes to locate and eliminate the kid. But as he\ngets closer to his target, the lead begins to question his orders and whether\nhe can go through with the execution. There aren\u2019t a great many reviews for\nthis independent period flick just yet, but those that have appeared have been\nsplit on the final results. One wrote that the performers were engaging that\nthe movie rose about its low-budget limitations. The other called it repetitive\nand predictable, stating that there were better viewing options out there. Neal\nMcDonough, Michael Cudlitz, Mike Dopud and Dominic Scott Kay headline the film.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THIS GAME\u2019S CALLED MURDER \u2013 A wealthy but dangerous man who\nhas made his fortune producing red high-heeled shoes for women struggles to\ndeal with this rebellious daughter, who is less-than-impressed with his\nbusiness practices. She begins posting her opposition online and gets caught up\nin a violent online game along with her dad, mother and the family\u2019s goons. Few\nmembers of the press have seen this feature, but a couple of online write-ups\nhave appeared. Some have called it crazy and said they were amused by the\nfilm\u2019s anarchistic streak, but others state that the humor feels forced and the\ncharacters too exaggerated and over-the-top to involve them in the story. Now\ninterested parties can pick the movie up and decide for themselves. It features\nRon Perlman, Natasha Henstridge, Vanessa Marano and Judson Mills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

TIME \u2013 Fox Rich is the subject of this documentary. It\ndetails 20 years of the woman\u2019s life as she campaigns for the release of her\nhusband, who is serving a 60-year sentence for a robbery that the two of them\ncommitted. We hear her story of what occurred and how she has raised their\nchildren while fighting for his sentence to be reduced. This picture premiered\non Amazon Prime at the end of 2020. It was nominated for an Academy Award for\nBest Documentary and earned nothing but praise from journalists. There were a small\nnumber who weren\u2019t overly sympathetic towards the subject due to their\nadmission of guilt in the crime. Regardless, the consensus was that the film\nilluminated horrible issues about the way black men are treated by judges and\nthe prison system, as well as the suffering that their families go through while\ntheir spouses serve interminable jail terms. The high-end Criterion line are\npremiering this feature on Blu-ray.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

TITANE \u2013 After being struck by a car, a female suffers a\nterrible skull injury and has a titanium plate fitted into her head. When she\nis released from the hospital, she begins behaving oddly and becomes physically\nattracted to the vehicle that nearly killed her. Years later, she meets\nVincent, a tortured figure who is addicted to using steroids in order to\npreserve his waning body. They find a connection and try to help each other\ndeal with their unusual problems. This bizarre French picture won the Palme d\u2019Or\nat the Cannes Film Festival and the press gave it very solid notices. A small\npercentage hated the characters and couldn\u2019t get onto the movie\u2019s odd\nwavelength, finding the experience baffling. Still, the vast majority were completely\ntaken in by what they saw, describing it as a provocative and shocking\nbody-horror drama that was impossible to forget. It stars Agathe Rousselle, Vincent\nLindon and Garance Marillier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

WHEEL OF FORTUNE AND FANTASY \u2013 This Japanese drama involves\nthree women whose stories are told in three individual chapters. One finds\nthemselves involved in an unexpected love triangle, another attempts in vain to\ntrap and seduce a love interest and a third has an unusual romantic experience because\nof a misunderstanding. The movie then traces the trajectories between their\nchoices and regrets. The movie won and was nominated for several awards at\nvarious film festivals over the past year. Critics were also very impressed.\nOnly one person posted a negative review, suggesting that the tales featured didn\u2019t\nadd up to much. Yet the overwhelming majority called it a wonderful and\nfascinating feature. They also appreciated that it showed how decisions are\nmade in a little seen and personal way. The cast includes Kotone Furukawa, Kiyohiko\nShibukawa, Katsuki Mori and Aoba Kawai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are also plenty of older features being dusted off and\ngiven image upgrades. Arrow Video are releasing the hugely popular Italian cult\nfilm Deep Red<\/em> (1975) in a Standard Special 4K edition (that also\nincludes a regular Blu-ray). This is a fantastic horror flick about a musician\nwho sees a woman being murdered in a distant apartment window and then attempts\nto solve the crime. He puts himself in a lot of danger as the killer eventually\nbegins stalking him. It\u2019s an incredibly stylish and effective movie that stands\nas one of the best from director Dario Argento (The Bird with the Crystal\nPlumage<\/em>. Suspiria, Tenebre<\/em>, Phenomena<\/em>, Terror at the Opera<\/em>).\nThis release presents both the exceptional 127-minute full-length original\nversion and the 105-minute cut that was released internationally. In addition\nto the improved picture quality, you\u2019ll get all of the excellent previously\nreleased bonuses and extras about the title. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Red Angel<\/em> (1966) is a chilling war picture from Japan\nfeaturing frontline medics dealing with the horrors of war and ultimately\nsuffering from their own demons. The Blu-ray comes with an introduction from a\nJapanese movie expert, a film historian commentary, a visual essay on the movie\nand plenty of publicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They also have a Blu-ray of the Italian creeper Shock<\/em>\n(1977). It follows a family dealing with a vengeful ghost in their new home.\nThe spirit eventually possesses the couple\u2019s young son, resulting in some very\nuncomfortable scenarios. This Blu-ray includes a 2K restoration of the film,\nboth the Italian and English language versions (with front and end titles also\nin each dialect). There\u2019s a film historian commentary, an interview with\nco-writer and co-director Lamberto Bava (Demons<\/em>), a discussion with the\nfeature\u2019s other co-writer, a video essay on the movie, a critical appreciation\nof the picture, a new interview with knowledgeable Italian film critic and\nauthority Alberto Farina, a trailer, TV spots and a photo gallery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for a comedy, Shout! Factory are\npresenting Liar Liar<\/em> (1997) on Blu-ray as part of a Remastered 25th<\/sup>\nAnniversary Edition. The hit film starred Jim Carrey as a scheming lawyer who\nfinds himself compelled beyond his control to tell the truth. His sudden\nhonestly creates all sorts of chaos every time he opens his mouth. The movie\nhas been given a 2K scan from the film\u2019s inter-positive and comes with\nfeaturettes on the writing of the movie, as well as a look back at the\npicture\u2019s impressive cast. You\u2019ll also get a deleted scene, outtakes, an\narchived director commentary and more! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino are presenting the Jack Lemmon\/George C. Scott\ncourtroom drama Inherit the Wind<\/em> (1999) on Blu-ray. This feature arrives\non disc with an entertainment journalist commentary providing background\ninformation on the film, as well as some trailers. They also have a 4K\nrestoration of Three Women<\/em> (1924), a drama about a socialite and her\ndaughter being taken advantage of by a paramour. It arrives with a film\nhistorian audio track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The great Blue Underground line have a couple of horror\nflicks coming your way as well. The Stendhal Syndrome<\/em> (1996) is a later\nwork by Dario Argento (Deep Red<\/em>). Asia Argento plays a young woman\nsuffering from the title condition who is attacked by a vicious killer. She\nlater takes revenge and then begins acting out in unsettling ways. This 2-disc\nSpecial Edition features a well-reviewed 2K restoration of the feature, an\naudio commentary with an expert on the movie, interviews with Asia Argento, as\nwell as the film\u2019s co-writer and the make-up effects team. It looks like this\nBlu-ray will also include additional bonus discussions as well as publicity\nmaterials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toolbox Murders<\/em> (1978) is arriving in a 4K Ultra\nHD and Blu-ray set. This notorious horror flick is about a deranged handyman\ngoing on a murder spree with power drills and other dangerous items. Besides\nthe new, high-quality transfer, it comes with a cast and crew commentary, a\nfilm expert audio track, interviews with the director, some of the stars and a\nvideo essay on the picture. You\u2019ll also receive the trailer, a TV spot, radio\ncommercials, a poster and still gallery and plenty more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ClassicFlix are putting out The Little Rascals Volume 4<\/em>\non Blu-ray. This is another collection of comedic shorts featuring the young\ncomedians getting into all sorts of trouble. All of them were made between 1922\nand 1928 and, as expected, the set will include some bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Cohen Media Group are putting out Expresso\nBongo<\/em> (1959) on Blu-ray. This satirical musical follows a promoter who\ndiscovers a bongo player (played by popular musician Cliff Richard) in a\ncoffeehouse and tries to make him into a media sensation. The disc contains the\nfull and original 1959 theatrical version, which includes a number of songs\nthat were cut out of the later and more commonly available 1962 cut that was rereleased\nat later to capitalize on the popularity of Richard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fans of The Beatles<\/em> will be happy that Criterion are\nrereleasing A Hard Day\u2019s Night<\/em> (1964) in an upgraded 4K Ultra HD +\nBlu-ray set. This classic musical is presented on disc with all of the same\nextras, but everything included now has improved picture quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Capture<\/em> (1950) is also arriving on Blu-ray\ncourtesy of The Film Detective. This well-regarded crime\/drama is about a fugitive\nwho ends up falling for the wife of the man whose death he is responsible for.\nThe image has been newly remastered for this release and it comes with a movie\nexpert commentary, a featurette on cast member Teresa Wright and another\nspecial on the director, John Sturges (Bad Day at Black Rock<\/em>, The\nMagnificent Seven<\/em>, The Great Escape<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If Japanese animated features are more to your liking, one\nof the genre\u2019s most famous is coming your way. Akira <\/em>(1988) is arriving\nin a 4K and Blu-ray set from FUNimation. It\u2019s about a young boy in futuristic\nNeo-Tokyo who acquires telekinetic powers. Curious parties will have to do some\nresearch to see if this edition includes any extras besides the high-quality\npicture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kit Parker Film are presenting a Blu-ray\/DVD combo package\nof the WWII picture A Walk in the Sun<\/em> (1945) with a \u201cdefinitive\u201d 4K\nimage restoration. The UCLA Film & Television Archive worked on the transfer\nand it comes with a historian commentary, as well as a featurette on WWII\nfilms, some newsreels on the picture and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Low-budget horror distributor Troma have some interesting\nnew Blu-rays coming your way. They include the comedic slasher picture Blood\nHook<\/em> (1986), which was the debut feature from Jim Mallon (who later became\na producer on Mystery Science Theater 3000<\/em>). They also have Evil Bong<\/em>\n(2006). Both of these discs will likely include some bonus features.\nAdditionally, they are putting out The Sexy Box<\/em> Blu-ray set, which\nincludes the studio\u2019s teen-sex comedies The First Turn-On!<\/em> (1981), Waitress!<\/em>\n(1982) and Stuck on You!<\/em> (1983).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sandpiper Pictures has a Blu-ray of the well-regarded Charles Dickens adaptation of Nicolas Nickleby<\/em> (2002) starring Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Bell and Christopher Plummer. It’s pictured above and to the left. Additionally, they have the cheesy dance picture, Salsa<\/em> (1988), which ever so-slightly predated the Lambada craze (which also included a couple of movies as well).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Like Mexican wrestling movies? VCI are presenting a Blu-ray\nbox set featuring 8 titles starring Mexican wrestler Santo. It\u2019s called Santo:\nEl Enmascarado de Plata<\/em> and includes the English-language versions of Santo\nin The Wax Museum<\/em> (1963), Santo in The Treasure of Dracula<\/em> (1969), Santo\nvs The Riders of Terror<\/em> (1970), Santo in The Vengeance of the Mummy<\/em> (1971),\nSanto vs Frankenstein’s Daughter<\/em> (1972), Santo & Blue Demon vs\nDracula and the Wolfman<\/em> (1973), Santo and Blue Demon vs Dr. Frankenstein<\/em>\n(1974) and Santo and Mantequilla Napoles in The Revenge of la Llorona (<\/em>1974).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the recent reimagining of Candyman<\/em> doing well at\nthe box office, Vestron have decided to release one of the sequels to the 1992\noriginal on Blu-ray. Candyman: Day of the Dead<\/em> (1999) is the third movie\nin the original series and another tale featuring the famous killer. It\u2019s\nconsidered the weakest in the franchise, but at least you can now pick it up in\nhigh definition and own the entire collection (the first two films are\navailable through Shout! Factory).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Archive are making made-to-order Blu-rays\navailable of the war movie Edge of Darkness<\/em> (1943) and the crime\nmystery\/comedy sequel, Song of the Thin Man<\/em> (1947). You can order these\ndiscs exclusively through the Amazon website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
