\nActually, looking at the title of the piece, I\u2019m having second thoughts. \u201cThe Life and Work of David Wain\u201d insinuates that Mr. Wain has died. He has not died. I was merely trying to imply that this piece covers aspects of his life as well as his career. But I actually have no real insight into David Wain\u2019s personal life so I could have easily called it \u201cDavid Wain: A Retrospect\u201d or \u201cSpotlight: David Wain\u201d. Let\u2019s go with \u201cDavid Wain: Purveyor of Comedy Gold Nuggets\u201d and move on.
\nDavid Wain was one of the many talented folks to come from MTV\u2019s sketch comedy show, \u201cThe State\u201d which ran on the cable channel from 1993 to 1995. Other cast members include Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, Thomas Lennon, Kerri Kenney among others who shall go unnamed for now. The group has had the distinction of continuing to work together on various projects over the years, the latest example being Wain\u2019s upcoming film \u201cWanderlust\u201d which was co-written by Wain and former \u201cState-mate\u201d Ken Marino and features performances by Marino, Kenney and Joe Lo Truglio. I don\u2019t know if they actually call each other \u201cState-mates\u201d. In fact, I doubt it. But I like the phrase, mainly because it rhymes while fusing the words \u201cState\u201d and \u201ccast mate\u201d. Maybe it will stick\u2026

\nMany years after the devastating cancellation of \u201cThe State\u201d Wain went on to co-write (this time he collaborated with another \u201cmate from the State\u201d Michael Showalter) and direct \u201cWet Hot American Summer\u201d which is a sort of comedy\u2019s answer to \u201cMeatballs\u201d. Not that \u201cMeatballs\u201d wasn\u2019t a comedy; it\u2019s just that \u201cWet Hot\u201d was a funnier, spoofier \u201cMeatballs\u201d that took the \u201cTeen\/Summer Camp\/Camp Counselor Sex Comedy\/Dance\/Romance\u201d micro genre and turned it on its balls.

\n\u201cWet Hot\u201d is also comedy\u2019s answer to \u201cAmerican Graffiti\u201d as it features an amazing cast of unknowns that went on to superstardom. Look for early work from Elizabeth Banks, Bradley Cooper, Christopher Meloni, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. Actually the established actors, namely Janeane Garofalo and David Hyde Pierce, did not fare so well AFTER \u201cWet Hot\u201d and went on to relative obscurity. Weird.
\nIn 2005 came the short lived but highly hilarious free form comedy, \u201cStella\u201d which featured Wain alongside fellow \u201cCast buddy who was also in The State\u201d Michael Ian Black and Showalter. To describe the show as bizarre and offbeat does no justice. \u201cStella\u201d was one of the most original and strange shows ever put on American Television and never found an audience. It was cancelled after ten episodes proving, yet again, that everybody sucks.
\nThe last few years Wain has been focusing on feature films and has established himself as a \u201cFeature Film Director\u201d. Maybe that\u2019s a better title: \u201cDavid Wain: Feature Film Director\u201d. In 2007 he gave us \u201cThe Ten\u201d which was a little episodic comedy about the ten commandments. Again, great cast (Jessica Alba, Winona Ryder, Jon Hamm) and many high points. Good stuff.
\nThen came \u201cRole Models\u201d which made nearly $100 Million dollars worldwide!!! Actually it made $92,380,927 worldwide which is closer to $90 million dollars but, regardless, it\u2019s a lot of money and gave Mr. Wain some Hollywood Juice. Hollywood Juice is very important in Hollywood and shall allow Mr. Wain to make quirky and original films for years to come.
\nCase in point: \u201cWanderlust\u201d which opens this Friday. It will be reviewed here in the virtual pages of CinemaStance.com. The film stars megastars Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston and is poised to give Mr. Wain even more Juice. And, as everyone knows, you cannot have enough juice. Not in juice crazed Hollywood. Thanks.
