When it comes to murder\/mysteries, no one can top Agatha\nChristie. The late author\u2019s written works revolving around private detective\nHercule Poirot and Miss Marple are so iconic and beloved that they have been\nadapted to film and television on multiple occasions. Death on the Nile<\/em> serves\nas one of the most famous books in the author\u2019s resume. So, what can one do to\ndifferentiate and add a few twists to the story? If you are director\/star\nKenneth Branagh, the answer is changing the histories of a few suspects and\nadding an elaborate backstory about the lead character\u2019s facial hair. Strangely\nenough, the approach works reasonably well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tale finds Hercule Poirot (Branagh) vacationing in\nEgypt. While visiting the Pyramids of Giza, he runs into close friend Bouc (Tom\nBateman). The lead is invited to join the elaborate wedding celebration of\nLinnet Ridgeway-Doyle (Gal Gadot) and Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer). While the\nwealthy couple are thrilled to be newly married, after meeting Poirot they\nshare their concern about Jacqueline de Belefort (Emma Mackey). She is Doyle\u2019s ex-fianc\u00e9e\nand is stalking them, determined to win back the love of her life. In\nfrustration, the anxious newlyweds take their guests on a cruise along the Nile\nto continue the festivities, but it isn\u2019t long before someone onboard turns up\ndead. Poirot grills the various attendees in order to find the murderer,\nuncovering various motives and revelations about everyone present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned, many viewers may already be familiar with the\nstory, so the mystery itself and grand reveal may not be as big of a shock as it\nmight be with an original tale. That may be why the adaptation is so dependent\non an array of stars and established faces to help carry the material. Just\nlike Murder on the Orient Express<\/em> from 2017 (the previous entry in this\nupdated series), this movie boasts an impressive cast of suspects that include\nAnnette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, Rose\nLeslie, Sophie Okonedo, Letitia Wright and many others. Clearly, they\u2019re all\nhaving fun with the material and at times push the interpersonal drama to melodramatic\nheights, but regardless it\u2019s still enjoyable to watch these red herrings glower\nat one another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite making jokes earlier in this review about a\nsignificant backstory regarding Poirot\u2019s over-the-top facial hair, this added\nmaterial actually helps the movie in surprising ways. While it may initially\nseem silly, the story of why the detective chose to grow a moustache does land\nand ends up adding a level of melancholy and humanity to the character that\nwouldn\u2019t otherwise exist. And of course, when he isn\u2019t quietly ruing choices he\nmade before becoming a private investigator, Branagh is a blast to watch as he\nbrazenly makes accusations towards each and every passenger in order to unveil\nthe truth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is heavy use of CGI technology in order to depict\nEgypt in the 1930s and not all of the special effects look convincing. At\ntimes, it really is evident that the characters are standing in front of a blue\nscreen with the exotic locale added in behind them. But the odd shot is still\nimpressive to behold and all of the interior sets, including those of the\nelaborate sea vessel, are strikingly photographed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admittedly, Death on the Nile<\/em> is far from a\nmasterpiece. The film is corny and exaggerated at times, and it even takes\nquite a while for the story to present the main murder that pushes the plot\nforward. However, it is also an amusingly extravagant, well-paced, old-fashioned\nthriller that will provide appropriate popcorn entertainment to mystery fans. Hopefully\nthe filmmakers will dig a little deeper in the Christie catalog next time out\nand give audiences a less-familiar story with a few more unexpected\ntwists.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
