<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nEXPIRED \u2013 Set in the future, this tale involves a hit man\nwho falls in love with a nightclub singer in Hong Kong. However, the lead soon begins\nexperiencing strange physical symptoms in her presence. In fact, his body ultimately\nbegins to deteriorate. He seeks out a reclusive scientist to try and understand\nwhat is happening and if he and his new love can make a fresh start together.\nCritics weren\u2019t overly impressed with this Australian science-fiction\/romance\nfilm and ended up giving it mixed reviews. There were a handful who called the\nmovie atmospheric and stylish. Unfortunately, slightly more complained that the\nmovie was overambitious and overstuffed, noting that the finale didn\u2019t make as big\nof an emotional impact as hoped for. It stars Ryan Kwanten, Hugo Weaving, Jillian\nNguyeb and Keiichi Enomoto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nEYIMOFE (THIS IS MY DESIRE) \u2013 A factory technician and a\nhairdresser in Nigeria set out to make a better life for themselves in this story.\nAfter spending years living at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder, they make\nplans to leave the country and begin again on foreign shores. But after a\nseries of personal tragedies, the pair find their aspirations fading away. Instead,\nthey are forced to try and change their situation at home. Response towards\nthis drama was incredibly strong. As of right now, it has yet to receive a\nsingle downbeat write-up. All wrote that the movie authentically and powerfully\ndepicted the daily problems that prevent many in the country (and elsewhere)\nfrom succeeding. They also praised the cast for their sensitive and empathetic\nperformances. The cast includes Jude Akuwudike, Temiloluwa Ami-Williams, Cynthia\nEbijie and Tomiwa Edun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nMOONFALL \u2013 Hollywood\u2019s big release of the week is this\ndisaster flick from genre veteran Roland Emmerich (Independence Day<\/em>, Godzilla<\/em>,\nThe Day After Tomorrow<\/em>, 2012<\/em>, White House Down<\/em>, Independence\nDay: Resurgence<\/em>). The feature begins with a mysterious force knocking the\nmoon from its orbit and sending it on a collision course with Earth. A NASA\nexecutive comes up with a wild plan and convinces other eccentric astronauts to\nfollow her on a mission to save the world. The press seemed to mostly roll\ntheir eyes at what they witnessed. About a third of them said the movie was so\nexaggerated and silly that they couldn\u2019t help but enjoy it. They also\nappreciated the elaborate visual effect and over-the-top histrionics. Everyone\nelse suggested that the film was simply terrible, calling it dopey, ridiculous\nand ultimately more tiring than thrilling to watch. It features Halle Berry, Patrick\nWilson, John Bradley, Michael Pe\u00f1a, Charlie Plummer, Wenwen Yu and Donald\nSutherland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n MOON MANOR \u2013 After realizing that his Alzheimer\u2019s is worsening and that he has little time left, an elderly man decides to choose his final day on Earth and make it as memorable as possible. He allows an obituary writer to join him as he sets his final affairs in order in the most humorous way possible, closing things with a colossal funeral party for all those whom he has known. Inspired by a true story, this independent drama\/comedy received plenty of good notices from those who saw it. One or two commented that they liked the premise, but found the jokes juvenile and though the movie needed a more powerful message. Still, most suggested it was sweet and said they appreciated watching a character wrestle with mortality in a unique way and come to his own unique life philosophy. James Carrozo, Debra Wilson, Richard Riehle, Gayle Rankin, Lou Taylor Pucci and Ricki Lake headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MOTHER SCHMUCKERS \u2013 Originally released in its homeland\nunder the title Fils de Plouc<\/em>, this French-language Belgian feature\nfollows two idiotic 20-something brothers who cause chaos wherever they roam. One\nday while getting into trouble, they lose their mother\u2019s beloved dog. She tells\nher sons that they have 24-hours to find the pooch\u2026 or else they will be kicked\nout of her house permanently. The pair go on a bizarre mission to locate the\nanimal. This title split reviewers in this part of the world. Half hated the\ncharacters, described the jokes as imbecilic and gross, and also complained\nthat the end product wasn\u2019t memorably outrageous. However, just as many admired\nthe movie\u2019s attempts to alternately shock viewers and make them feel\nuncomfortable. These critics admired the crazy and unpredictable gags on\ndisplay. It stars Maxi Delmelle, Harpo Guit and Claire Bodson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n STOP-ZEMLIA \u2013 This Ukrainian coming-of-age film follows a\nyoung and introverted teenage girl who spends most of her time going to school\nand hanging out with a small but tight-knit group of friends. As graduation\napproaches, she falls in love unexpectedly. This forces the protagonist out of her\ncomfort zone, where she experiences new things without having her best pals guide\nher in making choices. The majority of critics were very taken with this foreign-language\ndrama. One or two complained that the film seemed unfocused and didn\u2019t have a\nclear message to relay about being a teenager. However, the consensus was that\nthe movie was impressively shot and acted, featuring authentic and relatable\ndepictions of real kids at an important and transformative time in their lives.\nThe cast includes Maria Fedorchenko, Yana Isaienko, Oleksandr Ivanov and Arsenii\nMarkov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n While it may be a quiet week for newer titles, that certainly\nisn\u2019t the case with older flicks receiving high- definition upgrades. Arrow\nVideo are presenting 12 Monkeys<\/em> (1995) in 4K Ultra HD. This phenomenal science-fiction\neffort features Bruce Willis as a man from the future attempting to prevent a\nvirus from wiping out most of humanity. He quickly finds himself being institutionalized,\nmaking his job all the harder. Obviously, the movie arrives with the highest visual\nand audio quality possible and also includes all previously released extras\nfrom earlier editions (including a great feature-length making-of and more). Alas,\nno Blu-ray is included, so those who don\u2019t have the 4K set up will simply have\nto purchase the wonderful Arrow edition from a couple of years back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor also has the Twisting the Knife: Four\nFilms by Claude Chabrol<\/em> box set arriving on store shelves. The \u201cLimited\nEdition\u201d Blu-ray release includes the French crime pictures The Swindle<\/em> (1997),\nThe Color of Lies<\/em> (1999), Nightcap<\/em> (2000) and The Flower of\nEvil<\/em> (2003). Most of the movies have been given 4K restorations and come\nwith film critic audio commentaries, interviews with cast and crew, select scene\ncomments from the director, publicity materials and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n AGFA (American Genre Film Archive) are presenting the\nlow-budget independent zombie flick Pathogen <\/em>(2006) on Blu-ray. The\nmovie was conceived and created and by an Austin-based teenaged girl and\ncompleted by the time she was 16. It received a lot of praise during its original\nrelease and developed a cult following. For its high-def debut, the disc also contains\na commentary with the filmmaker, a cast and crew Q&A from its premiere, a\nshort film and a bonus feature-length documentary about the making-of the movie\nfeatured on the disc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dementia<\/em> (1955) is a little horror flick that was shot\nand completed without any dialogue. It follows a psychotic young woman\nexperiencing nightmarish hallucinations over the course of one night. The New\nYork State Film Board banned the movie during its original release, which soon\nmade it a cult item. Cohen Media Group are debuting a Blu-ray of the feature\nwith a digitally remastered picture, a trailer and a complete recut of the\nmovie called Daughter of Horror<\/em> (that cane out in 1957) that includes narration\nthroughout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Criterion are presenting the acclaimed documentary For\nAll Mankind<\/em> (1989) with a 4K Blu-ray restoration. The film tells the story\nof NASA\u2019s attempts to send astronauts to the moon and features incredible\nimages taken during the journey. There\u2019s a director commentary included, as\nwell as a documentary on the film, a selection of interviews with the Apollo\nastronauts, a gallery of astronaut Alan Bean\u2019s paintings and other bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Round Midnight<\/em> (1986) is a very well-regarded drama about a jazz musician in the 1950s who flees the US to escape his problems, finding refuge and support in Paris. The movie won Herbie Hancock an Academy Award for Best Score. This disc arrives on Blu-ray with a 4K digital restoration, an interview with a jazz and cultural critic about the movie, a conversation with the widow of the star and musician playing the lead character. It also comes with a panel discussion from 2014 featuring members the director and the music producer, a musical performance by the star and an essay about the feature and its importance in cinema history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While no one would necessary call Slashdance<\/em> (1989) an\naward-winning classic, this thriller is also receiving the Blu-ray treatment\ncourtesy of Culture Shock Releasing. It follows a female cop out to stop a\nkiller targeting ladies at a dance playhouse. Bonuses on the disc include a director\ncommentary, a second track with podcasters who appreciate B-movies, lengthy interviews\nwith the producer, one of the cast members, a condensed version of the movie\nand a bonus film called Hollywood\u2019s New Blood from the same writer\/director. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino have some new Blu-rays as well. They have the Charles\nBronson action picture Breakout<\/em> (1975), about a pilot who is hired to\nfly to Mexico and free an innocent prisoner (played by Robert Duvall). This \u201cSpecial\nEdition\u201d comes with a film historian commentary and tons of publicity materials\nfor the feature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They also have the Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema VI<\/em>\nbox set. It contains Blu-rays of Singapore<\/em> (1947), Johnny Stool\nPigeon<\/em> (1949) and The Raging Tide<\/em> (1951) featuring cast members like\nFred MacMurray, Ava Gardner, Tony Curtis and Shelley Winters. All of the titles\nhave been given 2K remasters and each film has a commentary with a film professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And you can also pick up the heist flick Grand Slam<\/em> (1967)\non Blu-ray. The leads decide to rob a diamond company in Rio de Janeiro, but to\nsucceed must contend with the most advanced security system in the world. The\ndisc has a film historian commentary and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Paramount are presenting the Blu-ray debut of the comedy The Beautician and the Beast<\/em> (1997). It stars Fran Dresher as a hairdresser who is accidentally hired by a widowed dictator to teach his children lessons in the subject of science. They soon find themselves in love. Timothy Dalton plays the male lead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for more romance, you can also try He Said, She Said<\/em> (1991) with Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth Perkins. The two play journalists who are pitted against each other on TV to present different views on various issues. Sparks fly and they fall for each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The studio is also putting out a Blu-ray of the Richard Gere\nbiblical drama King David<\/em> (1985). Additionally, they have the amusing college\ncomedy Orange County<\/em> (2002) with Colin Hanks and Jack Black. The plot\ninvolves a pair of students whose university applications are mixed-up by\nadmissions administrators. Thief of Hearts<\/em> (1984) is a drama with Steven\nBauer about a cat burglar who gets involved with a lady whom he has robbed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And on a lighter note, Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!<\/em>\n(2004) is also arriving on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a small-town girl who wins a\ndate with a celebrity. This makes her male best friend very jealous as he\nwatches her swoon over the star. The movie has an impressive cast which includes\nJosh Duhamel, Kate Bosworth, Topher Grace, Kathryn Hahn, Octavia Spencer and\nmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for more genre pics on Blu-ray, Severin Video\nare premiering Stone <\/em>(1974) as a Special Edition Blu-ray that has a CD soundtrack\nincluded in the package. The Australian movie involves a motorcycle gang who\nfind themselves being infiltrated by a cop who is out to wipe them all out. Some\ncall it the best biker movie in history\u2026 now you can find out for yourself. You\u2019ll\nreceive the uncut version scanned in 4K from the original vault elements, a\nmaking of, deleted and extended scenes, interviews with cast and crew, make-up\ntests, a slideshow with a director commentary, a trailer and the aforementioned\nsoundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! Factory are releasing a trio of Blu-ray titles this\nweek in an unusual manner. They are limited editions (with only 1500 copies\navailable) that can only be purchased through their website. The first is Cockfighter\n<\/em>(1974) a tale about men who take part in the illegal practice. It stars Warren\nOates and Harry Dean Stanton. The disc comes with a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dr. Strange<\/em> (1978) is a TV-movie that marks the first\nadaptation of the now-famous Marvel comic book character. The heroic sorcerer\nis forced to take on an evil sorceress plotting to take over the world. It\u2019s a\ncheesy TV-movie, but one that will certainly intrigue fans of the character. The\nfeature has received a picture restoration for its Blu-ray debut and involves a\ncommentary with a pop culture historian. Pre-orders for the title have already sold\nout, but they\u2019ve decided to order some more stock to meet the demand for the release.\nInterested parties would be wise to order it immediately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor also has the sequel Watchers II<\/em>\n(1990), which features genetically altered animals and beasts battling it out. If\nyou pick up the Blu-ray, you\u2019ll see that the movie has been given a new and\nsharp 2K scan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Vinegar Syndrome has another group of Blu-rays headed your\nway. Each features upgraded image scans with tons of commentaries and other\nextras. This week releases include the X-rated vampire flick, Dracula Sucks<\/em>\n(1978) a Double-Feature of Hard Rock Zombies<\/em> (1985) and Slaugherhouse\nRock<\/em> (1988), as well as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray pack of the slasher, Madman<\/em>\n(1981). You can also pick up the cheesy exploitation flick Reform School\nGirls<\/em> (1986) with Sybil Danning. Additionally, the have 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray packages of Scanner Cop<\/em> (1994) and its sequel, Scanner Cop II<\/em>\n(1995). And you can also pick up a Double Feature 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set\nof Schizoid<\/em> (1980) and X-Ray<\/em> (1982). The company always fills\ntheir discs with bonuses, so if you\u2019re interested in any of these discs, you\nshould definitely pick them up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Warner Bros. are celebrating the 70th<\/sup> anniversary of Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/em> (1952) with a set containing a 4K Ultra HD disc and a Blu-ray. Pictured above and to the right, this classic musical stars Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds and apparently the new discs are absolutely stellar and offer vastly improved image quality over previous editions. It comes with a vintage commentary featuring some of the cast and the co-director, as well as instant access to musical numbers. Other bonuses include a documentary about the film\u2019s influence on later generations, a jukebox feature and a trailer.
