Believe it or not, the 1986 smash Top Gun<\/em> was not a\ncritical hit upon its release. But it did break box-office records and make an\nA-list star of lead Tom Cruise. In fact, the film remains one of the actor\u2019s\nmost popular and beloved titles. It has been a long time coming, but a sequel\nhas finally arrived. Top Gun: Maverick<\/em> continues the protagonist\u2019s\nstory. The movie is certain to be a huge success and will definitely please\nthose who adored the first feature. However, this critic was never an\nenthusiast of the original, even as a youngster. While in many respects the new\nmovie is an improvement, it still retains some of the first film\u2019s awkward\nelements.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 35 since the previous chapter, Captain Pete\n“Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has never risen in naval aviator\nranks. This is partly due to his love of flying, but also because of his disdain\nfor authority figures. After irking more officials while working as a test\npilot, Maverick is given surprising news. His help is required in training an\nelite group of Top Gun pilots for an impossible mission. Maverick must train\nand select a group of pilots to enter a foreign country and destroy a\nwell-guarded uranium facility. Upon arriving in San Diego, he immediately butts\nheads with Vice Admiral Beau Simpson (Jon Hamm) and rekindles a relationship\nwith bar-owner Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly). He also finds himself in a\ntense relationship with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller),\nson of Maverick\u2019s deceased friend Goose. The young pilot resents the lead for\ndelaying his progress in the Top Gun program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie truly adores its predecessor and goes out of its\nway to pay tribute and emulate several aspects of the 80s feature. Some of\nthese references are effective, like a brief but sweet reunion between Maverick\nand old rival “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer). They talk about their lives,\nmortality and how the hero might make a new start for himself. There isn\u2019t any\nbickering, shouting or high drama between the characters, but it\u2019s the most\nlikable and authentic scene in the film.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other aspects aren\u2019t as successful. With the exception of\nRooster, the supporting characters are mostly one-note and spend their time\nposturing. This aspect isn\u2019t helped by the fact that the movie is obsessed with\ncreating montages and music video-esque sequences like those in the original.\nThey\u2019re slick, but don\u2019t add any weight to the story and make the characters\nseem overly blas\u00e9 about the potential life-ending dangers some will be\nencountering. And while romantic interest Penny initially seems like a match\nfor Maverick, the character ultimately isn\u2019t given much to do but swoon\nwhenever the lead appears. There\u2019s also a bit of jingoism present, especially\nwhen characters brag about their confirmed kills. Perhaps that is the way real\npilots talk, but it is off-putting in this feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can\u2019t be denied is the spectacular aerial photography\nand dogfighting sequences. They are incredible to witness and whenever the\naction does occur, it\u2019s impossible not to be impressed. The pilot\u2019s dangerous\nmission involves flying at a high rate of speed through a narrow canyon\nsurrounded by enemies and the filmmaker\u2019s make expert use of the scenario. It\nis incredibly tense to witness characters attempt maneuvers that push them\nbeyond their personal limits. Like other Cruise franchises, the climax does\noverextend itself and a very exaggerated element ultimately tests one\u2019s\nsuspension of disbelief, but it\u2019s still impressively mounted and provides\nplenty of thrills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part of the larger mantra spoken by several characters in\nthe movie is, \u201cDon\u2019t think!\u201d and that\u2019s good advice for viewers to follow. If\nyou fondly remember the original and are simply looking for a summer action\npicture, then the glossy Top Gun: Maverick<\/em> will deliver the goods. But\nthis reviewer wishes the movie had updated more than just the aerial\ncinematography and delved much deeper into the psyche of naval pilots dealing\nwith desperate and potentially life-ending scenarios.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
