When her neighbor is killed by mobsters, she agrees to drive the son\nof the deceased to surviving family members in South Dakota. The lead doesn\u2019t\nlike kids, but begins to feel some sympathy for the boy while on the road and\nmust protect him when assassins appear, including the head of the criminal\norganization (who happens to be a man she once dated). This title appears to be\ndebuting on disc in North America. A few reviews from abroad have popped up\nonline, but they haven\u2019t been positive. Most have called the film dull, routine\nand awkwardly put together, suggesting it wastes a good cast and unique concept.\nIt features Lena Headey, Sam Worthington, Dean Scott Vazquez and Barbara\nHershey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nALIENS, CLOWNS & GEEKS \u2013 Many know of film composer\nDanny Elfman and his work scoring and writing songs for popular films like Batman<\/em>,\nGood Will Hunting<\/em>, The Nightmare Before Christmas<\/em>, Big Fish<\/em>\nand many others. His brother Richard Elfman is also an independent filmmaker\nwho specializes in very quirky and oddball cult pictures. This effort follows\nan out-of-work actor who stumbles upon a dimensional portal and ends up caught\nin the middle of an epic war between clowns and aliens. Those in the press who\nwrote up the movie got a kick out of it. They called it a completely unique and\ntotally outlandish comedy that was a whole lot of fun to watch. The title is\narriving this week exclusively on DVD and a Blu-ray will follow on June 21st<\/sup>.\nThe cast includes Bodhi Elfman, Rebecca Forsythe, French Stewart, George Wendt,\nMalcolm Foster Smith, Martin Klebba and Verne Troyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ASCENSION \u2013 Finding purpose in life and what it means to be\nliving the \u201cChinese Dream\u201d is the subject of this documentary. It explores some\nof the contrasts between China\u2019s political system and the wants of its citizens.\nIn particular, the contrast between a country that wants to prioritize\nproductivity and innovation and its somewhat individualistic citizens who are\nseemingly pursuing wealth and power. Critics wrote very highly of this feature.\nIt has only received one negative review in this part of the world. That\nparticular write-up complained that the movie didn\u2019t make its point as strongly\nand ultimately felt like a travel advertisement. Everyone else stated that the\nfilm was intriguing throughout and offered some interesting and humanistic\ninsights about the country and the current attitudes of its citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n CATCH THE FAIR ONE \u2013 A former championship boxer sets out on\na personal mission after learning that her younger sister has disappeared.\nAfter two obsessive years of searching, she discovers that her sibling was\nlikely the target of human sex traffickers. To find out exactly what happened,\nthe lead goes undercover on the streets, hoping to be kidnapped by those\nresponsible. Along the way, she comes into conflict with shady personalities\nwho don\u2019t know about her hidden physical abilities. Response was very positive\ntowards this independent feature. A small contingent complained that after a\npowerful first half, the story lost its momentum and left them disappointed. Still, the overwhelming consensus was that the\nmovie was an authentic and powerful drama with a great lead performance that\neffectively addressed a horrible and disturbing issue. It stars Kali Reis, Daniel Henshall, Tiffany Chu, Michael\nDrayer, Kimberly Guerrero and Kevin Dunn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n COMPARTMENT NO. 6 \u2013 Set largely aboard a train, this tale\ninvolves a Finnish woman who decides to leave her lover in Moscow. In order to\nmake a hasty exit from the city, she boards a train heading to the arctic port\nof Murmansk. It\u2019s a long ride and the protagonist is forced to spend her time\nwith other travelers in her compartment, including a Russian miner. The group\ndiscuss their personal histories and the conversations force all of them to\nface truths about themselves and their personal relationships. Reviews were\nstrong for this foreign-language title. A handful did comment that the film was\ncontrived and that they had difficulty finding real meaning in the events\npresented. All others stated that the characters were very well-written and\nbelievable, noting that the movie was charming and that they quickly warmed up\nto all of the individuals involved. Seidi Haarla and Yuriy Borisov headline the\nfilm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE CONTRACTOR \u2013 In this espionage movie, a Special Forces\nSergeant is unceremoniously discharged from the US Army. Desperate for cash to\nsupport his family, he agrees to join a private underground military force. The\njob he is hired for doesn\u2019t go as planned and the protagonist is soon being\nhunted by the very same men who hired him. Notices for this picture were split\ndown the middle. Almost half stated that the film was efficient, tense and\nfeatured some decent action scenes. They also complimented the lead performer\nfor his work as a soldier wracked with guilt for past mistakes. Just as many\n(and a few more) suggested that the script wasn\u2019t unique enough to engage them\nand that the overall results were bland and unmemorable. It stars Chris Pine,\nBen Foster, Gillian Jacobs, Eddie Marsan, JD Pardo and Kiefer Sutherland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n DEFINING MOMENTS \u2013 This independent comedy presents a series\nof eight individual stories featuring characters dealing with life-altering\ndecisions that will ultimately change who they are. A few examples include a\nman has to decide whether to settle down or leave his girlfriend, a woman who\nvisits her estranged father in the hopes of reconnecting, and a lady who\nreceives unexpected news that she is pregnant. There aren\u2019t a lot of write-ups\navailable for the movie and critics weren\u2019t particularly kind to it. The ones\nthat have appeared online and in print suggest that the humor doesn\u2019t work and\nthat the movie is a misfire. They say it wouldn\u2019t have been released at cinemas\nwere it not for a lack of available titles to put out during the pandemic. This\nis a DVD-only release. The cast includes Burt Reynolds (in his final film\nrole), Sienna Guillory, Graham Greene, Tammy\nBlanchard and Shawn Roberts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ERASER: REBORN \u2013 Some 25 years after the 1996 Arnold\nSchwarzenegger film Eraser<\/em>, this direct-to-disc action picture attempts\nto reboot the franchise with an all-new cast. A US Marshal who specializes in Witness\nProtection and making people disappear must protect the wife of a mafia boss\nwho is testifying against the crime organization. The lead must use every trick\nin the book, as well as a few new ones, to keep her safe while assassins hunt\nthem down. Again, there haven\u2019t been many write-ups for this title yet and the\nones that have appeared online from international territories aren\u2019t upbeat.\nThey suggest that the action is capably shot but that the story is routine and that\nthe characters aren\u2019t memorable enough to make the flick worth watching. Dominic Sherwood, Jacky Lai, McKinley\nBelcher III and Eddie Ramos headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE FEAST \u2013 A businessman and a neighboring farmer are\ninvited to dinner at the home of a wealthy Welsh family who are trying to sell\ntheir mine. After an unexpected guest arrives, the situation becomes\nincreasingly distressing as the strange individual starts to unintentionally\nunravel everyone\u2019s plans. Things become increasingly violent as events\nprogress. The press gave this independent horror flick high marks. A handful\nsuggested that while the concept was interesting, what followed was predictable\nand simplistically delivered. Regardless, most complimented the mood and\natmosphere as being disturbing and unsettling. They also were impressed by the\nperformances and called the film an effective critique of corporations\ndestroying the environment. It features Annes Elwy, Nia Roberts, Julian Lewis\nJones and Lisa Palfrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n FORTRESS: SNIPER\u2019S EYE \u2013 This is a sequel to the 2021\ndirect-to-disc feature Fortress<\/em>, which followed a retired CIA agent and\nhis adult son hiding in a high-tech bunker and fighting off their old enemies.\nAfter escaping with their lives, the two men decide to rebuild their\nrelationship. Things go haywire when the younger man\u2019s wife is kidnapped. The heroes\nteam up once against to track her down and wipe out the threat. Like the\nprevious entry, reviews for the movie were generally terrible. The majority\nhave called the film badly written and dim-witted from beginning to end. One or\ntwo even suggested that the follow-up is harder to watch now, because it feels\nlike producers were exploiting the co-star\u2019s illness and need for cash. Jesse\nMetcalfe, Bruce Willis, Chad Michael Murray and Ser\u2019Darius Blain take on the\nlead roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MARVELOUS AND THE BLACK HOLE \u2013 A teenage delinquent is at\nthe center of this coming-of-age comedy. With no one willing to deal with the\ntroublemaker, the youngster finds an unlikely friend in a surly magician. While\nassisting the gruff performer, the lead deals with her inner demons and finds\nnew purpose in life after years of acting out. Notices were pretty strong for\nthis independent feature. There was a small contingent who called the movie out\nfor not dealing with the issues raised or characters in a funny, deep or\nrealistic manner. Still, the majority said that while the story itself was\nsimplistic, the performances were good and that the movie ultimately won them\nover with a few memorable moments and plenty of charm. The cast includes Miya\nCech, Rhea Perlman, Leonardo Nam and Kannon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MIDNIGHT \u2013 After finishing work for the evening, a young and\nhearing-impaired woman decides to head back to her mother\u2019s home. As she walks\nthrough the dark streets, she accidentally witnesses a serial killer murdering\na local. The protagonist flees into the city with the axe-wielding maniac in\npursuit. This South Korean feature is apparently notable for having almost no\ndialogue (the lead character doesn\u2019t speak at all). Critics in this part of the\nworld were very impressed by the movie. As of right now, it has yet to receive\na single negative write-up. They all commented that while the story was far\nfrom complex, the lead was extremely likable, the editing and photography were\ntop-notch and there were plenty of surprises as events played out. For them, these\nelements made the film a thrilling and pulse-pounding experience. Wi Ha-Joon and\nKi-joo Jin headline the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE NORTHMAN \u2013 The big new release of the week is this\nviolent Viking opus based on a legendary Scandinavian folk tale (which was also\nthe basis for Hamlet<\/em>, the famous play by William Shakespeare). It\nfollows a noble prince who becomes infuriated when his father, King War-Raven,\nis murdered by his uncle. He decides to seek revenge on the family member,\nfighting and bringing down all those who oppose him. Critics got caught up in\nthis period action\/drama and rated it highly. A limited number were overwhelmed\nby the sword-fighting and bloodiness on display and found it difficult to focus\non the human drama. Everyone else thought it was a grim but powerful look at\nhonor and vengeance among Vikings and couldn\u2019t help but be entertained by the\nspectacle. It stars Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Ethan\nHawke, Anya Taylor-Joy, Willem Dafoe and Bj\u00f6rk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking for something a little older? This is an incredibly busy week with plenty to choose from. Criterion has a Blu-ray of The Tales of Hoffmann<\/em> (1951) from Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (The Red Shoes<\/em>, A Matter of Life and Death<\/em>, Peeping Tom<\/em>). This Oscar-nominated opera is about a melancholy poet reflecting on three women he loved and lost in the past. The disc includes a 4K digital restoration of the movie, a commentary from filmmaker and enthusiast Martin Scorsese, an interview with director and fan George A. Romero on the picture, a short made by Michael Powell, as well as many more bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Director Richard Elfman has a new film just being released\non Blu-ray. This week, he also seems to be making another of his older titles available\non the same format. Forbidden Zone<\/em> (1980) is a wild and crazy film with\nnumerous musical numbers about a woman who travels to an underground kingdom.\nThis version is a director\u2019s cut and \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d that fixes some of\nthe technical glitches in the movie. You\u2019ll also get a new introduction from\nthe director and featurette with Richard and Danny Elfman (who wrote most of\nthe music for the movie). And it comes with all of the previously released\nextras from earlier editions, like a filmmaker commentary, a behind-the-scenes\ndocumentary, deleted scenes and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Flicker Alley is releasing a Double-Feature Blu-ray containing the film noir titles The Guilty<\/em> (1947) (pictured to the left) and High Tide<\/em> (1947). Both movies have been given new restorations and there are documentaries on the features, as well as movie historian commentaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you like low-budget B-flicks, Full Moon Features has Gore in Venice<\/em> (1979), a bloody giallo flick about a couple being stalked in Italy by a psychopath. Apparently, this edition contains the fully uncut version of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino is delivering the Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema\nVol. VII<\/em> Blu-ray box-set. It contains The Boss<\/em> (1956), Chicago\nConfidential<\/em> (1957) and The Fearmakers<\/em> (1958). The titles included\nhave been given 2K upgrades and arrive with film historian commentaries and\ntrailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor also has a Blu-ray of the B-movie Savage\nSisters<\/em> (1974), in addition to an extras-packed version of the Aussie\nexploitation flick, Stunt Rock<\/em> (1979). The latter film follows a crazy\nstunt man who breaks out of the hospital and is hired by a rock band to perform\noutrageous acts while they tour. The movie has been given a new 4K restoration\nand comes with a director commentary, interview footage from the Not Quite\nHollywood<\/em> documentary on Australian exploitation films. You\u2019ll also get multiple\ninterviews and conversations with the filmmaker, select songs from the\nsoundtrack and a trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Mill Creek has a pair of cost-effective Blu-rays hitting\nstore shelves. The first is a George Clooney Double Feature<\/em> containing The\nAmerican<\/em> (2010) and Leatherheads<\/em> (2008), while the second is a Martin\nShort Double Feature<\/em> which has the rom-com Cross My Heart<\/em> (1987) and\nthe comedy, Pure Luck<\/em> (1991) with Danny Glover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MVD is presenting The Fabulous Baker Boys<\/em> (1989) on\nBlu-ray. This well-regarded drama about a musical trio and their complicated\nrelationships stars Jeff Bridges, Michelle Pfeiffer and Beau Bridges. The disc\nincludes multiple commentary tracks, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted\nscenes and much more! <\/p>\n\n\n\n They also have a Blu-ray of the ensemble comedy Highball<\/em>\n(1997) from Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale<\/em>, Francis Ha<\/em>, Marriage\nStory<\/em>). This early effort involves the goings on at a New York party and\nfeatures a cast that includes Justine Bateman, Peter Bogdanovich, Rae Dawn\nChong, Annabella Sciorra, Ally Sheedy and Eric Stoltz (among many others).\nIncluded in this release is a feature-length making-of documentary about how\nthe movie came together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Paramount is presenting the sequel Grease 2<\/em> (1982) on\nBlu-ray in special Limited Edition Steelbook packaging. This feature is a\nretelling of the first movie that essentially swaps the genders of the\nprotagonists. It stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield. Additionally,\nthey have the popular drag-queen comedy Kinky Boots<\/em> (2005) with Chiwetel\nEjiofor, as well as the Brad Pitt\/Julia Roberts feature, The Mexican<\/em>\n(2001) in high definition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also putting out a standard Blu-ray\nedition of the John Hughes production Pretty in Pink<\/em> (1986), alongside She\u2019s\nHaving a Baby<\/em> (1988) and Some Kind of Wonderful<\/em> (1987). The latter\ntitle has the very same story as Pretty in Pink<\/em>, but again the story\nswitches the genders of the main characters. They are also putting out the\nNicolas Cage comedy\/drama The Weather Man<\/em> (2005) on Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorpion has some interesting Blu-rays as well. You can pick\nup the comedy, Clifford<\/em> (1994), in which Martin Short plays a\n10-year-old troublemaker causing great danger for his uncle (played by Charles\nGrodin). It was not well-received when it first came out, but has slowly\ndeveloped up a cult following over the years. The Heavenly Kid<\/em> (1985) is\na coming-of-age drama about a teen who gets coached in the ways of the world by\nthe ghost of a 50s greaser who died in a car crash. This disc includes a\ndirector commentary and other bonuses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You can also pick up the Charles Bronson action picture, The\nMechanic<\/em> (1972) on Blu-ray. This edition contains a 2K scan of the movie,\nmultiple commentary tracks and more. And if you\u2019re a completist wanting every\nDario Argento (Deep Red<\/em>, Suspiria<\/em>) title, you can now pick up\nhis\u2026 bizarre take on The Phantom of the Opera<\/em> (1998) starring Julian\nSands and Asia Argento. The Blu-ray includes a film historian commentary, an\ninterview with Dario Argento and some discussions with crew members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! are presenting a number of Japanese animated features\non Blu-ray. 5 Centimeters per Second<\/em> (2007) is one effort that includes\ninterviews with the voice cast, storyboards, as well as two bonus shorts, Voices\nof a Distant Star <\/em>and She and Her Cat<\/em>, which are all from the same\nfilmmaker. Children Who Chase Lost Voices<\/em> (2011) is also now available on\nBlu-ray. Only Yesterday<\/em> (1991) is arriving from the distributor as a\n2-disc Blu-ray and DVD pack. And you can purchase The Place Promised in Our\nEarly Days<\/em> (2004), as well as a The Tale of The Princess Kayuga<\/em>\n(2013) set which includes both a Blu-ray and DVD of the film. All come with\nextra features too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony has decided to give two classics the 4K Ultra HD\ntreatment. Both are famous David Lean films and the sets include the 4K\nversions and a Blu-ray of the film including numerous bonus features. You can\nnow purchase The Bridge on the River Kwai<\/em> (1957) and Lawrence of\nArabia<\/em> (1962) with the highest-grade picture that has ever been made\navailable for these masterpieces. These sound like must-owns for those with 4K\nplayback systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n While it may not be quite as prestigious as the previous two movies, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue<\/em> (1974) aka Let Sleeping Corpses Lie<\/em> is a fantastic zombie film and one of the best genre films of its era. Pictured below, Synapse Films is giving the feature a great new Blu-ray. <\/p>\n\n\n\n When a new experimental agricultural process causes the dead to rise in a small town, a hippy couple get blamed for the violence that follows. This Blu-ray includes a new 4K restoration of the feature from the original camera negative. You\u2019ll also receive various sound mixes for the movie, two film scholar commentary tracks, a feature-length documentary on the director, multiple discussions on the movie and its importance, as well as tons of publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Independent outfit Troma is presenting Beyond Evil <\/em>(1980),\nCombat Shock<\/em> (1984) and The First Turn-On!<\/em> (1983) on Blu-ray for\nthe first time ever. All of their discs include upgraded image quality and come\nwith tons of bonus features, making them a treat for any B-movie enthusiast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Universal is delivering a box set called The Bourne\nComplete Collection 20th<\/sup> Anniversary<\/em>. It\u2019s a Limited Edition that\nis supposed to contain 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray discs for all 5-movies in the\nseries (four starring Matt Damon and one with Jeremy Renner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n And Warner Archive are making a few catalog titles available\nas made-to-order Blu-ray discs. This week\u2019s releases include The Clock<\/em>\n(1945), For Me and My Gal<\/em> (1942) and Ziegfeld Girl<\/em> (1941).
