This feature from Universal Pictures will be released at movie\ntheaters on June 10th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2015, Universal Pictures released \u201cJurassic World,\u201d a lively\nand entertaining sequel to the original \u201cJurassic Park\u201d franchise that managed\nto elaborate on and create drama from a working and busy island theme park\nfilled with living dinosaurs. The weaker 2018 follow-up introduced a black\nmarket involving rare giant reptiles, as well as human cloning. \u201cJurassic World\nDominion\u201d continues the focus on the latter thread. It claims to be the sixth\nand final chapter in the series, tying up loose ends and bringing back characters\nfrom the original trilogy. This film tries to squeeze in too many characters\nand subplots and suffers greatly for it, although it does deliver a few\nexciting moments along the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the years since the last installment, dinosaurs have\nspread across the world. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce\nDallas Howard) have gone off-the-grid to raise human clone Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon). When bounty hunters arrive and\nkidnap the teen, her adopted parents go on a globe-trotting mission to find\nher. In the meantime, Dr. Eillie Sattler (Laura Dern) begins investigating a\nseries of attacks involving enormous locusts that have been wiping out crops\nacross the US. She approaches paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) to assist\nher in learning who engineered the insects. The trail heats up when Dr. Ian Malcolm\n(Jeff Goldblum) invites the pair to an Italian research facility and dinosaur\nsanctuary run by Biosyn Genetics CEO Dr. Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essentially, the first half of the film is split into two different\nstorylines. Time is spent reminding viewers of previous events, playing catch\nup with the many leads and where their lives have taken them, as well as\nintroducing a few new characters like pilot Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) and Biosyn\nemployee Ramsay Cole (Mamoudou Athie) into the mix. Despite the fast-cutting between\nstorylines and attempts to keep things moving rapidly, it\u2019s all surprisingly\nclunky and ineffective. Much of the dialogue consists of awkwardly blunt exposition\nand attempts at humorous witticisms that just don\u2019t land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, placing the dinosaurs in real world environments\ndoesn\u2019t always have the same awe-inspiring effect. One bit with a brachiosaurus\nin a lumber mill is impressive, but other scenes involving carnivorous beasts in\nlocal woods end up looking silly and less-than-threatening. It\u2019s also\ndisappointing that the story seemingly focuses as much on the locust problem as\nthe dinosaurs. Admittedly, these grasshoppers are doing horrible things and are\noddly oversized, but they aren\u2019t as dangerous or physically menacing as the\ndinos, lessening the tension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, as the story progresses and we encounter more raptors\nand other prehistoric beasts, there are a few exciting moments. One highlight\ninvolves jaws being closed around a steel ladder, and another details one\ncharacter being pursued into a large waterhole by a threatening creature. And\nthings do hit their stride when the two major plots converge and the characters\nall come together in the sanctuary. Goldblum in particular gets a chance to deliver\nsome amusing lines \u2013 one crack about a promise made to a dinosaur is genuinely\nfunny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personally, this reviewer thinks that a film about the world\nbeing overrun with dinosaurs and humanity dealing with no longer being the dominant\nspecies is fascinating. While enjoyable in spurts, this isn\u2019t that movie. It\nintroduces some of these ideas, but doesn\u2019t really want to deal with them or\ndebate it in a dynamic manner. In fact, an expert or two merely state that we should\nall just learn to co-exist happily (which does come across as strange, given\nthat the story continually makes reference to several dinos as being apex\npredators and, one assumes, an invasive species). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, \u201cJurassic World Dominion\u201d haphazardly jumps around between\nsubplots and tires to juggle too many elements to truly be effective. As a\nseries finale it doesn\u2019t completely muddle things. It is fun enough if you\u2019re a\nforgiving viewer. Still, one can\u2019t help but find it lacking bite, thought-provoking\nobservations, or even the sense of wonder and spectacle as in some of the\nprevious chapters. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
