After being detained, the teens are informed that the charges\nagainst their families will be dropped if they go to a facility and care for\nthe elderly. They agree, but discover that the job and institute is far more\nsinister than expected. This feature split the press. Nearly half of them\ncomplained that the story\u2019s mix of horror and comedy didn\u2019t gel and that the screenplay\nwasn\u2019t as cutting or satirical as it could have been. A few more gave the movie\na pass, suggesting that while overstuffed and blunt in execution, it presented\nsome good ideas and strong moments. It stars Jenna Ortega, Jorge Lendeborg Jr.,\nAllen Maldonado, Jorge Diaz, Eric Dane and Brett Cullen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nBRIAN AND CHARLES \u2013 In this British comedy, an eccentric and\nlonely Welsh inventor spends his days creating various gadgets that fail to\nimpress locals. But one day, he manages to create an artificially intelligent\nrobot from washing machine parts. The protagonist begins teaching this figure\nabout the world and the two become fast friends. Complications arise as the\nrobot begins developing his own interests and wants. Reaction was very positive\ntowards this movie. A small number found the tone too cute and quirky, saying\nthey couldn\u2019t get onto its wavelength. However, the majority of reviewers were\ncompletely charmed by what they witnessed, complimenting the film\u2019s cast and\nsaying that the writing was witty and that the film possessed real heart. The\ncast includes David Earl, Chris Hayward, Louise Brealey and Nina Sosanya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nFACING NOLAN \u2013 Major League Baseball pitcher Nolan Ryan is\nthe subject of this documentary. Described as an athlete whose professional\ncareer was filled with extremes, the movie goes over many stories from the\nmound as well as his personal life. These include pitching a game in a\nblood-covered jersey, as well as his involvement in an on-field brawl with\nRobin Ventura. The filmmakers also note that while he struck out a great many\nbatters and pitched seven no-hitters, he also gave away more grand slams and\nstolen bases than any other pitcher. Critics really enjoyed the picture. Only\none reviewer panned it, saying that the presentation did nothing to make them\ncare about the subject. But everyone else thought it would intrigue and\nentertain any baseball fan and included plenty of fantastic and bizarre\nstories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nFAYA DAYI \u2013 Those looking for more documentaries can also\ngive this effort a try. Shot in Harar, Ethiopia, the film details a group of\nfarmers who grow a special leaf called khat. This plant is a natural stimulant\nthat is used in religious mediation ceremonies. When chewed, it can create a\nfeeling of euphoria. The greenery is also the most lucrative cash crop in the\ncountry. The movie details the mythic history of the khat and its vital\nspiritual role in many communities and their worshiping rituals. Write-ups for\nthis feature were very upbeat. A lone voice thought that it was too slow-moving\nand could have done with tightening up in the editing room. All others thought\nthe film was visually striking, complimenting the black and white photography.\nThey also called it a poetic and moving ode to the unique leaf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nGABBY GIFFORDS WON\u2019T BACK DOWN \u2013 And if you haven\u2019t gotten\nyour fill of documentaries, you can check out this feature about Arizona\nDemocratic congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Known for being a moderate while\nserving in office, she became an outspoken advocate for gun control after a man\nattempted to assassinate her in public. Six citizens were killed in the\nshooting spree and Giffords was shot in the head. The film details what\noccurred, her incredible recovery and rehabilitation (involving physical and\nspeech therapy) and her attempts to prevent gun violence. There were no\nnegative write-ups for this feature. All reviewers thought it did an excellent\njob of telling Giffords\u2019 story and how she overcame a horrific ordeal. They\nalso called the project inspirational and were moved by how the subject\u2019s\nfamily came together during the tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nOLGA \u2013 Last week saw the debuts of several films on disc\nfrom Ukraine. This drama is another tale from that country, telling the story\nof a talented teenage gymnast who is forced to leave her home for Switzerland\nafter conflict arises between her country and Russia. Struggling to fit in and\nworried about her mother\u2019s safety, she attempts to focus on the European\nchampionships, but finds it increasingly difficult as war breaks out. The press\nwas very taken with this movie too. A very small contingent commented that the\nprotagonist\u2019s struggle was presented in a repetitive fashion and that it didn\u2019t\npack a strong emotional wallop. Still, the consensus was that the film was\npowerful and compelling, displaying how a young woman pushes herself to\nphysical extremes to grapple with horrific events occurring in her homeland. It\nfeatures Anastasiia Budiashkina and Sabrina Rubtsova.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN \u2013 If you\u2019re looking for something a\nlittle lighter, you might want to try this biopic about British golfer and\nhoaxer Maurice Flitcroft. The events depicted actually occurred in 1976 and\nbecame something of a media sensation. After discovering the British Open was\nbeing played near his home, this crane operator decided to get himself into the\ntournament (despite never having played a full round of golf). The trickster\nmanages to get himself entered in the competition, becoming a folk hero in the\nprocess. Critics were taken by the movie\u2019s charms. A few did criticize the finished\nproduct for taking too many liberties with the real story and painting a bland\npicture of the real figure. Yet, everyone else enjoyed the work of the cast,\ncalling it an amusing and respectful portrait of an entertainingly eccentric\nfigure. Mark Rylance, Sally Hawkins, Rhys Ifans, Jake Davies and Christian Lees\nheadline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE SPY \u2013 This co-production between Norway, Sweden and\nBelgium is set at the beginning of World War II. Inspired by a true story, it\ntells the tale of a popular movie actress in Stockholm. As Nazi forces invade,\nshe is forced to help power their propaganda machine and is also romanced by a\nsympathetic Nazi officer. As this is occurring, the woman is recruited by\nSwedish intelligence to spy on the Germans. Things become more complicated and\ndangerous when her boyfriend pushes her to do the same to the Swedes. This\nfeature hasn\u2019t been seen by many in this part of the world. Online reviews have\nbeen divided. A few found the storytelling choppy, resulting in a film that\ndidn\u2019t create tension or excitement. But just as many complimented the\nphotography and wrote that it was an exciting thriller that kept them on the\nedge of their seat. For the time being, this is a DVD-only release. It stars\nIngrid Bolso Berdal, Erik Hivju, Rolf Lassgard and Alexander Scheer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking for something a bit older on disc? There are plenty\nof options to choose from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AGFA is presenting the low-budget horror picture Satan\u2019s\nChildren<\/em> (1975) on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a runaway teen who is assaulted and\nthen takes refuge with a cult of Satanists. He then plots revenge on his\nattackers. The movie has been described as \u201cfeeling like an Afterschool\nSpecial<\/em> from the depths of Hell,\u201d albeit with more disturbing moments. It\nhas been given a 2K preservation from the only theatrical print in existence.\nThe disc comes with a film expert audio commentary, a cast and crew reunion\nQ&A, as well as bonus TV specials and short films involving the subjects of\nSatan and Satanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Altered Innocence is putting out a 4K restoration of Jack\nBe Nimble<\/em> (1993) starring Alexis Arquette. The plot involves two abandoned\nkids with a psychic connection who are split up by an adoption agency, before\nattempting to find each other as adults. The Blu-ray contains a cast and crew\ncommentary, an interview with director Garth Maxwell, a discussion with the\nfilmmaker about his inspiration, several short films from Maxwell, publicity\nmaterials and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Giallo Essentials<\/em> box set is arriving courtesy of Arrow Video. It contains the Italian thrillers Smile Before Death<\/em> (1972) (pictured above and to the left), The Killer Reserved Nine Seats<\/em> (1974) and The Weapon, the Hour, the Motive<\/em> (1972) aka L\u2019Arma, L\u2019ora. Il MOvente<\/em> on Blu-ray. These discs have been released before separately by Arrow and come with all of the same extras. However, the first and third titles listed have been given new 2K restorations with improved picture quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also delivering the Running Out of\nTime Collection<\/em> on Blu-ray. It contains the Hong Kong action\/crime pictures\nRunning Out of Time<\/em> (1999) and Running Out of Time 2<\/em> (2001). The\nstory follows a hostage negotiator chasing a criminal mastermind with a\nterminal illness who is targeting the entire police force. Both movies have\nbeen given a 2K restoration and arrive with Hong Kong movie expert commentaries\n(the first film also contains a commentary with the screenwriter), archival\ninterviews with the cast and crew, publicity materials and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Heavy Metal Parking Lot<\/em> (1986) follows a pair of documentarians\nrecording conversations with obsessive Judas Priest<\/em> fans outside of a\nconcert venue. The movie is considered one of the best documentaries on the\nmetal scene. Circle Collective is now releasing a 2-disc Blu-ray of the flick.\nThe package not only contains the original feature, but also a ton of bonuses.\nYou\u2019ll get the follow-ups Heavy Metal Basement<\/em> (2001) and Heavy Metal\nPicnic<\/em> (2010), as well as other fan-made titles like Neil Diamond\nParking Lot<\/em> and Harry Potter Parking Lot<\/em>. It also comes with a 2016\nexhibit on the cult movie, a Zoom Anniversary party and reunion, segments of\nthe film that have been animated, featurettes on the location, a look at where\nthe people interviewed are now, lost footage and other bonuses. If that wasn\u2019t\nenough, you\u2019ll receive other documentary shorts by the filmmaker like King\nof Porn<\/em> (1996), I Created Lancelot Link <\/em>(1999) and The Real\nPinball Wizard<\/em> (2013). Sounds like a fantastic Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Symphony for a Massacre<\/em> (1963) is a classic French\ncrime thriller that is debuting on Blu-ray in North America from Cohen Media\nGroup. It\u2019s a gangster flick featuring double-crosses and set-ups between\nvarious heavies. The disc comes with a 4K restoration, an evaluation of the\nmovie by a film noir expert and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Culture Shock Releasing is presenting Raw Nerve<\/em>\n(1991), a thriller from B-movie veteran David A. Prior (Killer Workout,\nDeadly Prey, Raw Justice, Deadliest Prey<\/em>). According to the synopsis, a\nrace car driver has visions of the victims of a serial killer before their demise\nand tries to get a skeptical police detective and reporter to help him find the\nkiller. It stars Traci Lords, Ted Prior, Glenn Ford and Jan-Michael Vincent.\nThe Blu-ray includes a cast\/crew commentary track, interviews with Ted Prior\nand the producer, a vintage blooper reel and loads of trailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Sampo<\/em> (1959) aka The Day the Earth Froze<\/em> is a\nvery unusual Finnish\/Russian family fantasy film dealing in myth and legend. It\ninvolves a sinister witch who takes the sun away and the efforts of a muscular\nhero to save the day. The film was memorably parodied on Mystery Science\nTheater<\/em> some years back. Deaf Crocodile Films is now presenting the full\nfilm on Blu-ray with a stunning 4K restoration by the Finnish Film Institute. A\ncritic audio commentary is included, as is a featurette detailing some of the\nelaborate Russian fantasy films also produced during this era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Heartbreakers<\/em> (1984) is a drama with Peter Coyote and\nNick Mancuso about two men who struggle to maintain relationships with women.\nFun City Editions is presenting a Blu-ray with a 2K restoration, a director\nintroduction and commentary track, a new interview with the filmmaker, a\ndiscussion with stars Coyote and Mancuso, an image gallery, isolated music\ntrack and a booklet with essays on the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Gunpowder & Sky is delivering the recent drama Hearts\nBeat Loud<\/em> (2018) on Blu-ray. It\u2019s an enjoyable comedy\/drama about a father\nand his teenage daughter who form an unlikely songwriting duo. This reviewer\nisn\u2019t sure if this edition has any extras that aren\u2019t included on earlier\nversions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino would like you to know that a Blu-ray is coming of the Golan-Globus adaptation of Mata Hari<\/em> (1985). This is the notorious Cannon Pictures release that was generally considered something of a cinematic disaster upon its release. Naturally, its cheesiness has now turned it into something of a cult item. The disc includes a film historian commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is releasing a Blu-ray of Mysterious\nIsland of Beautiful Women<\/em> (1979), a CBS TV-movie about a plane full of men\nwho crash on an island populated only by women. The ladies are distrustful of\nthe guys, who require their help to survive the ordeal. It comes with a 2K\nrestoration of the title and a movie critic commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Summer Heat<\/em> (1987) is also arriving on Blu-ray. It\u2019s\na steamy period drama about a neglected farmer\u2019s wife who starts an affair with\na hired hand. Lori Singer and Anthony Edwards headline the movie. This disc\ncomes with a trailer and radio spot<\/p>\n\n\n\n They also are putting out a Blu-ray of The Tenth Man<\/em>\n(1988) another CBS TV-movie. This effort stars Anthony Hopkins as a French\nadvocate imprisoned during the Nazi occupation. Kristin Scott Thomas and Derek\nJacobi also appear in the feature. The title can be watched in two different\naspect ratios (one assumes that it played theatrically in some international\nterritories) and the disc also includes trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Looking for more? Lionsgate is delivering a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray Steelbook of the Tom Hardy\/Joel Eggerton mixed martial arts drama, Warrior<\/em>\n(2011). This title is a Best Buy exclusive and can only be purchased at this\nretailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Music Box Films is an excellent distributor who have been\nreleasing some great Blu-rays recently of both new and older titles. This week,\nthey have the steamy Spanish drama Sex and Lucia<\/em> (2001), about an author\nwhose novel accidentally intertwines with the romantic lives of various locals.\nThis Blu-ray contains the much sought-after unrated director\u2019s cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If independent chillers are more to your liking, Severin is\nmaking All About Evil<\/em> (2010) available on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a failing\nmovie theater and its unusual manager, who begins murdering people to help save\nthe cinema. Natasha Lyonne plays the lead in this film. A new HD restoration\nhas been prepared for the film and it also comes with a CD containing the\nsoundtrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are also making the Jess Franco slasher film Faceless\n<\/em>(1987) available as an 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. It\u2019s about an evil\nplastic surgeon messing with the faces of kidnapped models. It comes with a ton\nof interviews with cast members and movie critics, an archival commentary with\nFranco and the lead actress, other old featurettes on the movie, a parody short\nfrom 1987 and some trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the distributor is putting out the French\nexploitation action\/thriller, The Female Executioner<\/em> (1986) aka L\u2019executrice<\/em>.\nIt\u2019s about a vice cop who goes rogue and takes down pornographers, pimps,\npushers, human traffickers and more after her kid sister is mysteriously\nkidnapped. The disc has a 2K restoration of the feature and trailer, as well as\ninterviews with the star and the director, a visit to the locations used in the\nmovie, and a short film with the lead actress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not to be outdone, Shout! Factory has some titles of note.\nThey include a new 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set of last year\u2019s well-received\nJapanese animated film, Belle <\/em>(2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n And you can pick up the cult horror remake Cat People<\/em>\n(1982) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. This flick wasn\u2019t well received during\nits original run, but has since earned a following due to its appealing cast\nand crazy narrative. The movie has been given a 4K scan from the original\nnegative and comes with two commentaries featuring writer\/director Paul Schrader\n(Auto Focus, First Reformed<\/em>). You\u2019ll also get interviews with actors\nMalcolm McDowell, Nastassja Kinski, Annette O’Toole, John Heard and Lynn Lowry,\nas well as composer Giorgio Moroder and Schrader. There are many more\nfeaturettes included as well as publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the distributor is making A Walk in the\nWoods<\/em> (2015) available on Blu-ray. This effort stars Robert Redford and\nNick Nolte as friends attempting to hike the entire length of the Appalachian\nTrail. It comes with behind-the-scenes footage and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And that\u2019s not all. Shout! are also making a few of their\nnew releases \u201climited edition exclusives\u201d that can only be ordered through\ntheir own website. The first this week is the science-fiction\/comedy Space\nTruckers<\/em> (1996) with Dennis Hopper, Stephen Dorff, Debi Mazar, Charles\nDance and Barbara Crampton. This goofy flick from writer\/director Stuart Gordon\n(Re-Animator, From Beyond, Fortress, Stuck<\/em>) follows independent cargo\nhaulers who get in over their heads with a valuable load. The Blu-ray contains\na new interview with Crampton, archived interviews featuring director Gordon,\nthe score composer and the art director (who created the elaborate outer-space\ntrucking environments). It also comes with a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, you can pick up a double-feature Blu-ray of Stripped\nto Kill<\/em> (1987) and Final Judgement<\/em> (1992) only through the official\nShout! Factory website. These are cheesy thrillers with stories set around\ngentlemen\u2019s clubs. The two flicks feature cast members like Brad Dourif, Kay\nLenz, Greg Evigan, Norman Fell, Isaac Hayes and Karen Black. The first title\ncomes with a director and star commentary as well as interviews. The second\nfeature has been given a 2K restoration for improved image quality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Vinegar Syndrome are another outfit known for releasing high\nquality Blu-rays of obscure genre titles. This week, in conjunction with other\ndistributors, they are releasing discs that will be exclusives on their\nwebsite. Then, on September 27th<\/sup>, these Blu-rays will also be\navailable through other online retailers. All the Blu-rays come with numerous\nextras. Five Tawkeondo experts promote the power of\nfriendship while taking on a drug kingpin and playing in a popular new wave\nband. In addition to the picture upgrade, this release comes with extras\nincluding a new and extensive making-of documentary on the film, a recently\nrecorded audio commentary with star\/producer Y.K. Kim and writer\/co-star Joseph\nDiamond. The disc also includes previously released extras from earlier\neditions and much more. It even comes with a third Blu-ray containing Escape\nfrom Miami<\/em>, which is the long-lost pre-release cut of the movie with\nadditional scenes and a different ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Speaking of martial arts, you can also pick up Righting\nWrongs<\/em> (1986) on Blu-ray from Vinegar Syndrome. This well-regarded Hong\nKong action film stars Yuen Biao and Cynthia Rothrock. It follows a lawyer who\nseeks vengeance after a mobster kills his family. You\u2019ll get three different\ncuts of the movie, featurettes, an image gallery, a trailer and a bonus\ndocumentary called The Best of Martial Arts Films<\/em>, which should give\nviewers plenty of ideas about what to check out next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, the distributor is presenting a Blu-ray of the\nearly slasher, Shriek of the Mutilated<\/em> (1974).
