Welcome to another look at some of the highlights coming\nyour way on Blu-ray and DVD. This edition is a little quieter than normal, but\ndoes include a few notable releases in a wide variety of genres. So, if you\ncan\u2019t make it out to the movies this week or shouldn\u2019t be going out to the\ncinema, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE HISTORY OF METAL AND HORROR \u2013 This documentary focuses\non horror movies and their long connection to heavy metal music. The filmmakers\ndetail the history of the genre and identify when this music began to appear in\nfeatures. In addition to discussions with genre directors and actors, band\nmembers talk about movies that inspired their music and how they ended up\ncollaborating on film projects. There aren\u2019t many reviews for the title and it\nappears to be making its debut on disc. Those that have popped up online\nsuggest it isn\u2019t overly enlightening and is repetitive (you\u2019ll hear the same\ncomments from multiple sources). Still, they say it may provide fun for genre\nfans. It\u2019s narrated by Michael Berryman and the interview subjects include Phil\nAnselmo, Doug Bradley, John Carpenter, Alice Cooper, Gwar, Kirk Hammett, Kane\nHodder, Marky Ramone, Corey Taylor and Rob Zombie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LOST ILLUSIONS \u2013 Based on a portion of the acclaimed Honor\u00e9\nde Balzac novel of the same name, this French historical drama is set in the\nearly 19th<\/sup> century and tells the story of an aspiring novelist. In\norder to make ends meet, he takes a job as a journalist and art critic for a\nParisian newspaper. With daily printed publications exploding in popularity,\nthe lead finds himself being coerced and bribed by stage producers to write\nrave reviews of their productions. The writer finds himself in over his head\nand feeling guilty about his pieces. The press gave this foreign-language\nfeature rave reviews. One or two complained that it was too long, that the\nstory was jumbled and that its message needed to be more direct. However,\neveryone else found it to be one of the most compelling movies of recent\nmonths. They wrote that the cast was excellent, the story pushed buttons and\nclaimed the themes were especially relevant given the rise of social media as\nan influencer. It features Benjamin Voisin, Cecile de France, Xavier Dolan,\nJeanne Balibar, Andr\u00e9 Marcon and G\u00e9rard Depardieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MURINA \u2013 A rebellious teenage daughter butts heads with her\ndomineering father in this Croatian drama. When they are visited at their\nisolated island home by her dad\u2019s best friend, the young woman decides to\napproach the visitor. She then attempts to broker an unexpected arrangement in\norder to liberate herself from her pop. Unfortunately, her pop is\nnone-to-pleased by the plan, which eventually escalates into violence. Critics\nwere very positive about this unusual coming-of-age story. A small number\ncriticized the movie as favoring style over substance and said it didn\u2019t answer\nthe questions it raised. However, the overwhelming consensus was that the film\ndepicted an emotional, tense and gripping battle between father and daughter.\nThey also praised the cinematography and performances. The movie stars Gracija\nFilipovic, Danica Curcic, Leon Lucev and Cliff Curtis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

POST MORTEM \u2013 This Hungarian chiller is set after the end of\nWorld War I and follows a photographer with a curious job. After learning that\npeople have lost relatives to the war and the Spanish Flu that they cannot bury\n(because the ground is frozen), he takes it upon himself to capture family\nportraits featuring living and deceased family members. One day he arrives in a\nvillage for a shoot and witnesses strange supernatural occurrences. He decides\nto try and help the town exorcize these nasty spirits. Response was very strong\ntowards this effort. A couple of reviewers thought the tone was too downbeat\nand that it failed to frighten them. But all other notices called it an\nextremely creepy period effort with a great concept and atmosphere to burn.\nThey said it was full of disturbingly surrealistic moments. The cast includes\nViktor Klem, Fruzsina Hais, Judit Schell and Andrea Lad\u00e1nyi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE REEF: STALKED \u2013 Believe it or not, shark attacks are\nrare and on average cause about five human fatalities a year worldwide. In\nfact, the number is much higher for snakes, spiders, bears and even cows! But\ndon\u2019t tell filmmakers that factoid. The latest killer shark movie is a sequel\nto The Reef<\/em>, a 2010 Aussie flick. In this film, a woman attempts to get\nover the murder of her sister by heading out with friends on a kayaking\nadventure in the Pacific. They are soon hunted by a great white shark and must\nband together to survive. Reaction to the film was mixed, but it was more\npositive than negative. About one third of write-ups stated the story was\nrepetitive and that the dialogue primarily consisted of people screaming, \u201cOh\nmy God!\u201d over and over. Still, the majority wrote that it was nicely shot and\ndelivered exactly what genre fans would want. Teressa Liane, Ann Truong, Saskia\nArcher and Kate Lister headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

VENGEANCE \u2013 A New York-based reporter and podcaster learns that a woman he had a fling with has passed away of a drug overdose. Her family convinces the journalist to attend her funeral in rural Texas. After hearing bizarre ramblings from them about her actually having been murdered, he decides to investigate their claims and turn it into a story. It leads him down an unexpected path as he learns more about the woman and the community. Written and directed by lead actor B.J. Novak, the end product was well-received. A small number of critics didn\u2019t care for the protagonist or his journey, also commenting that the script was unfocused. However, the vast majority thought it was witty and well-acted, taking some interesting plot turns and portraying messy societal and political divides between regions in America in a compelling manner. It also features Boyd Holbrook, Issa Rae and Ashton Kutcher. To read a full review of the film, click here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WRONG PLACE \u2013 The latest action film to hit the\ndirect-to-disc and streaming market is this effort about a former small town\npolice chief now working as a security guard. After witnessing an attempted\nassassination and agreeing to testify in court against the drug kingpin\nresponsible, the bad guys decide to not only hunt and kill the witness, but his\nadult daughter as well. That doesn\u2019t sit well with either of the leads, who\nfight back against the villains. Advance word has been uniformly negative\ntowards the picture. They all said that the screenplay was full of plot holes\nand terrible lines, leaving the capable cast adrift. Additionally, many thought\nthat many story elements were stretched out unnecessarily to pad the running\ntime. The cast includes Bruce Willis, Ashley Greene, Michael Snow, Texas Battle\nand Stacey Danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are some very interesting older features receiving\nhigh-definition upgrades this week. Kit Parker Films is putting out a Blu-ray\nof the early western\/comedy The Round Up<\/em> (1920) under the Cinemuseum Archival\nEdition banner. The picture stars Roscoe \u2018Fatty\u2019 Arbuckle as an overweight\nsheriff trying to help an innocent man accused of theft. This disc also\nincludes the bonus Arbuckle shorts A Bandit<\/em> (1913) and Peeping Pete<\/em>\n(1913).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Code Red is presenting the action B-movie Mercenary\nFighters<\/em> (1988) aka Freedom Fighters<\/em> on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a group\nof Vietnam veterans turned mercenaries who are hired by the sinister president\nof an African country to squash a rebel group. When the fighters discover\nwhat\u2019s really going on, they help members of the uprising. It stars Peter\nFonda, Reb Brown, Ron O\u2019Neal and James Mitchum lead the cast. The movie has\nbeen given a 2K restoration and comes with a trailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is presenting a Blu-ray of the French classic, Le\nCorbeau<\/em> (1943). The story involves a series of poison-pen letters that\narrive in a small town and turn citizens against each other. It was made by\nrenowned filmmaker Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique, The Wages of Fear,\nManon<\/em>) and is highly regarded. This disc comes with a 4K picture\nrestoration, part of a documentary about Clouzot dealing with this title, an\ninterview with Gallic filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier (Round Midnight<\/em>)\nabout the movie and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up the Canadian drama Exotica<\/em> (1993)\non Blu-ray This effort from Atom Egoyan (The Sweet Hereafter, Ararat,\nRemember, Guest of Honour<\/em>) follows lost and damaged souls who are both\nemployees and customers at a strip club in Toronto. Besides a 4K restoration of\nthe film, this disc comes full of bonuses, including the movie maker’s previous\nfeature, Calendar<\/em> (1993). You\u2019ll also get a director commentary track, a\nconversation on the movie between Egoyan and actor Sarah Polley, numerous\nshorts made by the director and some audio from the film\u2019s 1994 Cannes press\nconference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino is presenting several interesting movies on Blu-ray.\nThe western Ace High<\/em> (1968) with Eli Wallach arrives with a 4K\nrestoration from the original camera negative. It also includes a commentary\ntrack from director and western authority Alex Cox, as well as a trailer. The\ndisc comes in a \u201climited edition\u201d slipcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up the British drama, Dreamchild<\/em>\n(1985). This tale presents an interesting take on the creation of the Alice\nin Wonderland<\/em> novel. It follows the elderly inspiration for Alice, who\nthinks back on her relationship with author\/professor Lewis Carroll and\neventually comes to some conclusions about what it all meant. The film was\nwritten by Dennis Potter (The Singing Detective<\/em>) and features effects by\nJim Henson\u2019s Creature Shop. This disc contains a film historian commentary, an\naudio interview about the actress who starred in the picture, in addition to a\ntrailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And The Last Train from Madrid<\/em> (1937) is arriving on\nBlu-ray. Dorothy Lamour stars in this tale about refugees fleeing the Spanish\nCivil War. The movie has been given a 2K restoration and comes with a trailer\nand entertainment journalist commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Barbara Stanwyck\/Kirk Douglas film noir The Strange\nLove of Martha Ivers<\/em> (1946) is coming out on Blu-ray with a 4K restoration,\nmovie expert commentary and trailers. And the legal thriller The Turning\nPoint<\/em> (1952) is being released on Blu-ray with almost identical bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milestone would like readers to know that South: Ernest\nShackleton and the Endurance Expedition<\/em> (1919) is being made available on\nBlu-ray. This documentary features footage shot by the crew on the ill-fated\nvoyage to Antarctica. In addition to the main movie and a film historian\ncommentary, the disc includes audio recordings of Shackleton, earlier footage\nshot by the explorers on other journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are interested in adding to your 4K Ultra HD title\ncollection, Paramount is making the entertaining killer alligator flick Crawl<\/em>\n(2019) and the Harrison Ford adventure sequel Indiana Jones and the Kingdom\nof the Crystal Skull<\/em> (2008) available on the format. Alas, no Blu-ray are\nincluded on these releases. The second title referenced arrives in special\nSteelbook packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sandpiper Pictures is releasing a trio of early and\nout-of-print Woody Allen titles on Blu-ray. The movies include Bananas<\/em>\n(1971), Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to\nAsk)<\/em> (1972) and Love and Death<\/em> (1975). If you ask this movie\nenthusiast, the last title listed is the best of the filmmaker\u2019s early works.\nIt\u2019s a comedy that essentially pokes fun at Russian epics. The\nactor\/writer\/director plays a cowardly villager who pines for his cousin. Unfortunately\nfor him, he ends up being forced to join the army during the Napoleonic Wars\nand later becomes part of a political assassination scheme. For those who enjoy\nAllen films, this is the title in which the artist truly found his voice and\nstyle. It\u2019s a very enjoyable tale with an extremely high percentage of great\nlines and clever moments.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout! Factory is rereleasing the well-regarded Tim Blake\nNelson western Old Henry<\/em> (2021) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo\npackage. This set arrives with all the extras from the previous version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warner Bros. is giving one of their recent animated DC\ntitles an upgrade too. Batman: The Long Halloween<\/em> (2021) was one of\ntheir best reviewed efforts and it is arriving in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\npackage with improved picture quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This writer is also pleased to see the horror\/comedy The\nLost Boys<\/em> (1987) get an upgrade to celebrate its 35th<\/sup>\nanniversary. The movie is coming out in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set with a\nnoticeable visual improvement, as well as all of the previously released\nbonuses. For those unfamiliar, this very 1980s tale follows a family who move\nto the California coast. A teenager and his younger brother discover a vampire\ngang rule the area and try to figure out what to do about it. The kid-brother\nteams up with a pair of aspiring vampire slayers and tries to save his\nfamily.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Poltergeist<\/em> (1982) is arriving in a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray set to mark its 40th<\/sup> anniversary. This iconic\nchiller about a family moving into a haunted house came from producer Steven\nSpielberg and director Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The\nFunhouse<\/em>). This big budget extravaganza left a memorable impression on any\nkid who saw it during its original release. In particular, the scene involving\na creepy doll and a strangely threatening tree. If memory serves, the movie\nalso includes a wince-inducing shaving sequence. Now, fans can own it with even\nbetter picture quality and many of the previously released extras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Archive is making the classic monster movie King\nKong<\/em> (1933) available on Blu-ray as a made-to-order title. It has been\nout-of-print for a while and it\u2019s great to see it out there again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a quiet week for family-friendly titles, but here is\nwhat will be available for tykes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
