Welcome to another look at some of the Blu-rays and DVDs\narriving on store shelves and rental outlets (if you can find one). With\nHalloween arriving soon, plenty of genre films are appearing, as well as some\nnotable titles in other genres. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the movies this\nweek or shouldn\u2019t be out in crowds, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BARBARIANS \u2013 Not to be confused with the recent chiller Barbarian<\/em>\nthat is currently playing in theaters, this UK horror film follows a group of\nfriends who decide to meet for a celebratory birthday dinner at a remote house\nin the country. Suddenly, masked assailants appear at the door and take the\ngroup hostage. The victims are forced to confess prior misdeeds before fighting\nto free themselves. Critics were split on the film, although overall it did\nreceive a few more recommendations. Those who disliked the picture wrote that\nit was predictable, didn\u2019t deliver many scares and missed many opportunities to\naddress the story\u2019s themes in a meaningful way. Slightly more called it a\nstylish sleeper that slowly but effectively built suspense and delivered\nseveral unexpected jolts as it unfolded. The cast includes Iwan Rheon, Tom\nCullen, Will Kemp and Catalina Sandino Moreno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BEAST \u2013 After the death of his ex-wife, a doctor decides to take his teenage daughters to the African Savanna and visit the area where he first met their mother. It starts out as a tense trip, but gets even worse when their vehicle is attacked by a rogue lion. From this point forward, the family and their guide attempt to endure a series of attacks and survive the ordeal. The general consensus for this thriller was upbeat. Close to one-third of critics didn\u2019t like the characters and found the exaggerated battle between man and beast too silly to appreciate. However, the majority suggested that this was an enjoyably pulpy suspense picture with solid performances and plenty of expertly shot action sequences. They also commented that while they might have been yelling at the screen at times, the movie engaged them more than other genre flicks. It stars Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries.\u00a0To read a full review of the movie, click here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

FROST \u2013 In this survivalist horror picture, a pregnant woman\ndecides to visit her estranged father who\u2026 yes\u2026 lives in the remote wilderness.\nWhen her dad suggests driving up to a nearby lake she agrees, but the pair get\ninto a car accident on the way. The woman finds herself trapped in the\noverturned vehicle. With the sun going down, the father races off to find help\nfor his daughter while she squares off against a hungry wolf. This feature is\ndebuting on disc and at present there have only been a handful of reviews\nwritten about it. Comments appear to be middling so far, with some saying that\nthe movie is suspenseful and makes the most of its limited budget. However,\nthey also warn that the finale doesn\u2019t work and almost ruins some of the\ngoodwill created in the first hour or so. Apparently, the Blu-ray for the movie\nincludes a CD soundtrack. Devanny Pinn and Vernon Wells headline the\nfeature.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HALLELUJAH: LEONARD COHEN, A JOURNEY, A SONG \u2013 Looking for a\ntitle that isn\u2019t a horror movie? This documentary explores late Canadian\nmusician Leonard Cohen, focusing on his hit song \u201cHallelujah\u201d and using it as a\nstorytelling device. Using interview footage with the man and other artists, it\ndetails the artist\u2019s life in the early 1980s, what inspired him to write the\ntune and how it was initially rejected by record labels before eventually\nbecoming a hit. Other artists also discuss their experiences with Cohen during\nthis era. The press greatly enjoyed this effort. A small number complained that\nthe film needed to focus more on other aspects of Cohen\u2019s life and that the\nfootage was pieced together in an unexciting way. Everyone else thought it was\na captivatingly told story about an artist and an iconic song with plenty of\ninteresting discussions and factoids on it and the life of the musician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MORTAL KOMBAT LEGENDS: SNOW BLIND \u2013 In addition to their\nrunning series of animated, direct-to-disc movies based on DC characters,\nWarner Bros. has also been releasing a number of titles based on the video game\nMortal Kombat<\/em>, which have been created in the same manner. This is the\nthird feature in the franchise and involves a villain who leads a group of\nmercenaries who slaughter their way through villages. A young man is defeated\nby the group but survives and trains with a kung-fu master to redeem himself\nand stop the threat. Very few reviewers have seen it, but write-ups that have\nappeared have been decent. Many state that the film is violent but effectively\nrendered and focuses on a lesser-known game character. The voice-cast includes\nDavid Wenham, Manny Jacinto, Yuri Lowenthal and Debra Wilson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

NIGHT AT THE EAGLE INN \u2013 A pair of fraternal twins whose\nfather vanished after they were born head off to an isolated Vermont motel\nafter learning that he may have resided there. They arrive, check in and\nbefriend both the innkeeper and groundskeeper, who agree to provide the pair\nwith information about the history of the site. As they continue their\ninvestigation, chilling secrets are revealed and they begin to fear for their\nlives. Response was positive towards this independent horror picture. One or two\nbelieved that the movie borrowed too heavily from other genre pics and didn\u2019t\nfrighten them. Still, the consensus was that this was a very likable and\neffective chiller with solid acting and a good screenplay that ultimately sent\nshivers down their spines. It features Amelia Dudley, Taylor Turner, Greg\nSchweers and Beau Minniear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SHARK: THE BEGINNING \u2013 No, this isn\u2019t another movie about a\nkiller shark eating extreme sports enthusiasts. Surprisingly, this South Korean\naction picture involves a bullied teen. After an unfortunate incident, he ends\nup being locked up in a juvenile detention center. While serving his sentence,\nthe youngster meets a martial arts champion and goes through an extreme\ntraining regimen. Once released, he seeks revenge on his bully. There haven\u2019t\nbeen a lot of reviews for this movie in this part of the world and thus far\nonline response has been mixed. It seems that a percentage think the film\u2019s\nstory is routine and that the pacing is too slow-moving. Still, just as many\ndescribe the feature as compelling and note that it delivers some well-shot and\nedited fight scenes. Wi Ha-joon, Won-Chang Jung and Kim Min-Suk headline the\nfilm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SQUEAL \u2013 Also released under the title Samuel\u2019s Travels<\/em>,\nthis dark comedy\/drama is from Latvia. A man traveling through Eastern Europe\nsearching for his biological father gets lost on the road and ends up damaging\nhis car in the middle of nowhere. He looks for help and is taken in by a\npig-farmer\u2019s daughter. Unfortunately, she ends up being a less-than-friendly host,\nconfining the protagonist and forcing him to toil endlessly on her farm. The\nmovie garnered mostly positive notices. One or two called the humor and message\nhit-and-miss, stating that the final product didn\u2019t quite come together. But\nmost wrote that while flawed, the movie juggled most of its elements and\nunusual themes with effectiveness and had some striking moments that won\u2019t be\neasily forgotten. The cast includes Kevin Janssens, Laura Silina and Aigars\nVilims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

TINY CINEMA \u2013 This independent feature was made by the\nwriter\/director of the oddball cult flick Butt Boy <\/em>that was released in\n2019. The anthology tells six bizarre tales (running roughly 15 minutes each)\nthat reportedly uses fantastical elements to deal with themes like life, death,\nlove and the fate of our future. At present, critics appear to have enjoyed\nthis title. A small number didn\u2019t care for its odd brand of humor and found the\nfeature more irritating and frustrating than amusing. Regardless, the majority\nappreciated its strangeness. They referred to the film as a well-photographed\nand uniquely bent movie with enough clever segments to earn it a\nrecommendation. It features Paul Ford, Tyler Rice, Phil Ursino, Kristina\nClifford, Shelby Dash, Kimberly Alexander, Austin Lewis and Matt Rasku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE TWIN \u2013 This title was set to come out on Blu-ray in\nJuly, but was delayed and is finally arriving this week. After a tragic\naccident causes the death of one of their twin boys, a husband and wife decide\nto start a new life in Finland with their surviving child. While the big move\nto the beautiful Scandinavian countryside initially allows the family a chance\nto heal, their child begins to act strangely. He announces that he has been\npossessed by his deceased twin, who wants answers about what really happened to\nhim. Unfortunately, critics were unimpressed by this horror picture. A small\nnumber stated that the film was atmospheric and had some creepy moments.\nHowever, the majority thought that the script didn\u2019t take full advantage of the\ninteresting concept and called it a pastiche of more effective genre pictures.\nIt stars Teresa Palmer, Steven Cree, Barbara Marten, Tristan Ruggeri and Taneli\nMustonen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s as busy a week as ever if you\u2019re in the mood to catch\nup with something a little older. The documentary Every Other Day is\nHalloween<\/em> (2009) is arriving on Blu-ray through Brink. It tells the\ntrue-life story of television personality and late-night horror-host Dick\nDyszel who appeared on local stations in Washington, D.C.. This edition\npresents a newly remastered version of the movie and a second feature from the\nfilmmakers called Bald Headed Blues<\/em> about another notable cable\nhorror-host named Dr. Sarcofiguy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Going Places<\/em> (1974) is a French crime\/comedy with\nGerard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert that is being released on Blu-ray by\nCohen Media Group. It comes with a film professor commentary track and a\ntrailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is putting out a couple of noteworthy Blu-rays as\nwell. The first is the classic comedy Arsenic and Old Lace<\/em> (1944) from\nFrank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, It\u2019s a Wonderful Life<\/em>). The\nmovie stars Cary Grant as a writer who specializes in articles about the\nfutility of marriage. When he decides to actually get married, it sets off a\nseries of comedic events involving very disturbing members of his extended\nfamily. You\u2019ll get a restored 4K digital transfer of the movie, a film expert\ncommentary, a radio adaptation from 1952 starring Boris Karloff, a trailer and\nmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lost Highway<\/em> (1997) from David Lynch (Eraserhead,\nBlue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire<\/em>) is also\ngetting a new presentation from the distributor. This is one of the filmmaker\u2019s\nmore surreal works and involves a man who transforms into a different person\nafter a horrifying incident involving his wife. This title is available in a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray format, or as a stand-alone Blu-ray release. It contains a\nnew restoration of the movie that was supervised by Lynch. The disc also\nincludes a 1997 feature-length making-of documentary on the production, a\nreading by Lynch and critic Kristine McKenna of excerpts of their 2018 book, Room\nto Dream<\/em>, as well as archival interviews.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who has paid the fee to join the Disney Movie Club\ncan now pick up a Frankenweenie<\/em> (2012) Blu-ray and DVD combo pack\nexclusively through the ordering service. This great little animated effort\nfrom Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, Corpse\nBride<\/em>) involves a young boy who decides to bring his pet dog back from the\ndead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DND is offering a DVD reissue of the documentary You\nCan\u2019t Do That on Film<\/em> (2012). It tells the story of the creature of the\nCanadian cult children\u2019s TV-series You Can\u2019t Do That on Television<\/em>, a\nsketch comedy show that regularly featured characters having green slime dropped\non their heads.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flicker Alley is presenting Casanova<\/em> (1927) on\nBlu-ray. This is an early French\/German take on the famous 18th<\/sup> century\nfigure. The disc includes a new restoration of the film, a newly recorded\nscore, and interview with the composer who wrote the music, an image gallery,\nsouvenir booklet and other promotional materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, Full Moon Features is distributing a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray package of the Tim Thomserson\/Helen Hunt cult science-fiction\ntime-travel flick, Trancers<\/em> (1984). This Collector\u2019s Edition includes a\ncommentary track with Thomerson and director\/producer Charles Band, the short\nfilm that inspired the feature, a video essay on the movie, an archival\nmaking-of and interviews, as well as press materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kino is releasing plenty of features as well. They have a\nnew edition of the Rutger Hauer action\/comedy Blind Fury<\/em> (1989), which\nfollows the exploits of a blind Vietnam vet who becomes a samurai. This one\narrives with a screenwriter audio commentary, newly remastered trailer and a\nspecial slipcase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blue Iguana<\/em> (1988) with Dylan McDermott and\nJessica Harper involves a bounty hunter who is blackmailed by US tax collectors\ninto robbing a bank. The Blu-ray comes with a trailer. By Candlelight<\/em>\n(1933) is a well-regarded comedy from Frankenstein<\/em> director James Whale\nabout a maid posing as a member of royalty. The Blu-ray has a 4K restoration of\nthe film and a film historian commentary. Film Noir: The Dark Side of Cinema\nIX<\/em> is a box set that includes Blu-rays the titles Lady on a Train<\/em>\n(1945), Tangier<\/em> (1946) and Take One False Step<\/em> (1949).  All\nthe titles are impressively restored and feature movie critic commentaries and\ntrailers. And Murder at the Vanities<\/em> (1934) is a mystery\/musical\/comedy\nthat features Duke Ellington and his orchestra. The film has received a 2K\nrestoration for Blu-ray and also includes an expert commentary detailing the\nproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distributor is also making a couple of more recent\ntitles available. Indecent Proposal<\/em> (1993) is getting a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray set. In addition to improved picture quality, it includes all\npreviously released extras. The same is true for the new 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray edition of the heist movie The Score<\/em> (2001) with Robert De Niro\nand Ed Norton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for an excellent hard-boiled revenge\npicture, you can purchase a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of The Limey<\/em>\n(1999) courtesy of Lionsgate. Terence Stamp plays an angry British ex-con\ntraveling to the US to investigate his daughter\u2019s suspicious death. It includes\na director and screenwriter commentary as well as an audio track with the cast.\nThis release is a Best Buy exclusive and can only be purchased through this\nstore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those who enjoy Japanese monster movies may appreciate a\nDVD-only release called the Ultraman Zearth Double Feature<\/em> from Mill\nCreek. It includes the films Ultraman Zearth<\/em> (1996) and Ultraman Zearth\n2<\/em> (1997).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mondo Macabro is distributing a Blu-ray of the\nSpanish\/French horror flick, Love Brides of the Blood Mummy<\/em> (1973). You\ncan also pick up the Jess Franco genre flick The Other Side of the Mirror<\/em>\n(1973). Like other titles from the company, both discs will include plenty of\nextras for those who appreciate these obscurities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s more! MVD Visual is delivering some nifty stuff\nthis week, including the chiller Disturbing Behavior<\/em> (1998). The plot\nfollows a teen who discovers that others in his age group are being changed\ninto upstanding citizens by their parents. It stars a young James Marsden and\nKatie Holmes. The Blu-ray comes with a director commentary, deleted scenes and\nan alternate ending, as well as publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman<\/em>\nis getting a polish with a Collector\u2019s Edition R-Rated Version Blu-ray. Besides\na longer, gorier cut of the movie, the disc comes with a film expert\ncommentary, an interview with the man who plays the title killer, an interview\nwith the director, behind-the-scenes featurettes, a music video spoof, a\ntrailer and some fancy box art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paramount is giving the 4K Ultra HD treatment to all of the\nfilms in The Godfather<\/em> series. All of the titles will be available\nindividually on the format, including the Oscar-winning 1972 original and 1974\nsequel, as well as The Godfather Part III<\/em> (1990) and The Godfather\nCoda: The Death of Michael Corleone<\/em>, which was a recent recut of the third\nmovie. There will be no Blu-rays included in these editions, so only pick them\nup if you have a 4K set-up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just in time for Halloween, the studio is presenting the\nParanormal Activity: The Ultimate Chills Collection<\/em> box set. The 9-disc set\ncontains seven movies in the series made between 2007 and 2021 and includes an\nout-of-print 3D edition of Paranormal Activity:<\/em> The Ghost Dimension<\/em>\nfrom 2015. You\u2019ll also get all of the previously released bonuses with the\ntitles, in addition to a definitive feature documentary on the entire series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reel Vault is releasing a 100th<\/sup> Anniversary\nEdition Blu-ray of the horror classic, Nosferatu <\/em>(1922). Alas, there is\nno other information on this title, so it\u2019s unclear if there are any extras or\nif the transfer of this public domain title is decent. Interested parties would\nbe wise to do some research first before purchasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Fans of low-budget genre films can also pick up the sequel Curse\nIII: Blood Sacrifice<\/em> (1991) on Blu-ray from Ronin Flix. This follow-up\nmoves the action to Africa and features the great Christopher Lee in a\nsupporting role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scorpion is presenting the thriller Cold Heaven<\/em>\n(1991) from Nicholas Roeg (Don\u2019t Look Now, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The\nWitches<\/em>). It\u2019s about an unhappily married wife who cheats on her husband\nand sets out to leave him. When he\u2019s involved in an accident and falls into a\ncoma, she experiences unusual supernatural phenomena. The disc includes a\ntrailer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goldengirl<\/em> (1979) involves a mysterious sprinter who\nunexpectedly begins winning medals during the Olympic Games. A man who falls\nfor her begins to learn that she may have been enhanced using bizarre\nscientific methods. The movie has been given a 4K restoration, features cast\ninterviews (including star Susan Anton), a discussion with the composer, a film\ncritic commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The slasher Night Visitor<\/em> (1989) is also arriving on\nBlu-ray. It\u2019s about a student trying to stop a Satanic cult from murdering\nprostitutes. This Special Edition includes a new 2019 master of the film, talks\nwith the director, the editor and the writer as well as a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shredder<\/em> (2001) follows a serial killer who targets\nsome snowboarding college kids on a vacation in the snowy peaks. This release\ncomes with a new 2019 HD master of the movie, a director commentary, an\ninterview with the star, outtakes and a trailer.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hit time-traveling comedy Bill & Ted\u2019s Excellent\nAdventure<\/em> (1989) is getting a 4K Ultra HD release from Shout! with an\nimproved picture. Buyers should beware that it doesn\u2019t appear as if a Blu-ray\nis included in this particular edition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distributor is also presenting two animated films from\nJapan. These are both Blu-ray and DVD combo packs. Ocean Waves<\/em> (1993) is\na Studio Ghibli production involving a high-school romance., while When\nMarnie Was There<\/em> (2014) follows an ill young girl who is sent to the\ncountry. She befriends a mysterious child who may have unexpectedly close ties\nto the lead. This is a little-known but effective film and the release includes\nnumerous featurettes, storyboards and other bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Want some classic monsters in high definition? Some time\nago, Universal put out a box set of four titles in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray.\nNow, each of those titles are being made available individually. You can pick\nup the Bela Lugosi classic, Dracula<\/em> (1931), see Boris Karloff\u2019s iconic\ntake on the role of Frankenstein<\/em> (1931), thrill to Claude Rains in The\ninvisible Man<\/em> (1933) and witness Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf Man<\/em>\n(1941). As mentioned, each title contains a 4K Ultra HD disc and a Blu-ray of\nthe movie along with tons of bonus material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the studio is releasing Universal Classics\nMonsters: Icons of Horror Collection Volume 2<\/em>, which contains four new\nupgrades of classic movies presented in 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. This set\nfeatures The Mummy<\/em> (1932), The Bride of Frankenstein<\/em> (1935), Phantom\nof the Opera<\/em> (1943) and Creature from the Black Lagoon<\/em> (1954). As\nwith the other discs, there are a ton of extras to enjoy as well, making this\nbox just as essential as the first volume. You may want to double check, but\nspecs on this set currently list that the Blu-ray of the last title features a\n3D version of the film (for those with the proper set-up).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Universal is giving the Gregory Peck classic To\nKill a Mockingbird<\/em> (1962) a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release celebrating its\n50th<\/sup> anniversary. There are various versions arriving, including a\nBlu-ray only edition and a limited edition 4K Ultra HD only \u201cgift set\u201d that\nincludes reproduction lobby cards and other physical bonuses. All previously\navailable bonuses are also present in this version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warner Archive is making Mark of the Vampire<\/em> (1935)\navailable as a made-to-order Blu-ray. This movie was directed by Tod Browning (Dracula,\nFreaks<\/em>) and is about a professor investigating a series of attacks thought\nto have been committed by a vampire. While lesser known than some of the\ndirector\u2019s other works, this is still an effective thriller with a nifty\ntwist.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Wild Eye Releasing is making a Collector\u2019s Edition\nBlu-ray available of the documentary Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom\nSavini <\/em>(2015). As you might have guessed, it details the career of famous\nmake-up effects man Tom Savini. Savini joins the director for a commentary\ntrack. Viewers will also see personal behind-the-scenes videos the subject shot\non several productions including Creepshow<\/em>, Day of the Dead<\/em>, Texas\nChainsaw Massacre 2<\/em>, From Dusk Till Dawn<\/em> and the 1990 remake of Night\nof the Living Dead<\/em>, as well as loads of other extras.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a quiet week for kids, but there should be more titles\narriving in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
