This film from Focus Features opens in San Diego on\nOctober 21st<\/sup>. It opens everywhere October 28th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most Hollywood films feature stories about a proactive hero\nstepping forward and overcoming great odds to either save the world or improve\nthemselves. Occasionally, an independent title arrives that does something\nconsiderably different. T\u00e1r<\/em> is one of those kinds of movies. It\u2019s a\nbeautifully performed character piece, but also one that moves at an almost\nglacial pace. The wait is a long one and once tension does arrive the movie\nbecomes exciting, but average moviegoers (and to a degree, this reviewer) may find\nthe slowness too much to endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lydia T\u00e1r (Cate Blanchett) is a famous conductor and\ncomposer adored by classical music fans, while also breaking barriers as a\nwoman leading the Berlin Philharmonic. As she prepares for a career-defining\npublic performance of Mahler\u2019s 5th<\/sup> Symphony, viewers witness some\nextremes in her personality. She commands attention and is brusquely\nopinionated in all matters regarding music and her work. Naturally, this causes\nplenty of problems in both her professional and personal relationships,\nparticularly with assistant Francesca Lentini (No\u00e9mie Merlant) and wife Sharon\nGoodnow (Nina Hoss) who also performs in the Berlin Philharmonic. As stress\nrises and the big day approaches, allegations about her past are raised and the\nconductor comes under scrutiny from those around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first hour or more, we see T\u00e1r traveling extensively\nto be interviewed and even serve as a lecturer at a university. Some sequences\nexamine her working relationship with the orchestra and approach to\ninterpreting classical music in her own way. While many of her arguments are\nastute and compelling, the character is also arrogant and manipulative in many\nways, with her devoted but put-upon assistant often covering for her employer’s\nbad behavior. The music theory discussed is interesting, as are some\nconversations and ideas relayed. Lengthy master takes are used and\nconversations are captured in a naturalistic way that doesn’t always deal with\nplot specifics. In fact, were it not for the polished photography, this all\nmight come across as a documentary on a real person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s convincingly portrayed, but there is a negative side to\nholding for extended periods of time and not getting to the meat of the story.\nSome of the discussions do feel overly extended and slow the pacing down. T\u00e1r\u2019s\nlecture is impressive in that it is all shot in a single take that must run at\nabout ten minutes. But the relevant information could have been choreographed\nand delivered in a more concise manner (it is reused, but not everything\naddressed in the lecture is necessary). When this scene is followed by other\nlengthy conversations, it does begin to feel exhausting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, things do slowly build to overtly dramatic\nsituations in the latter sections of the picture. When the pressure begins to\ntake an effect on the usually collected T\u00e1r for very real and nasty (as well as\ninvented) offenses and her world begins to crumble, it all becomes much more\nintriguing. And Blanchett is exceptional in the film throughout, managing to keep\nviewers watching during her regular work schedule, before she really gets to\ndisplay the egotistical character losing control of her own life narrative and\ncracking in a memorable way under the incredible strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When conflict was introduced into the story, this reviewer\nappreciated the story. As things come to a head, it is fascinating to see\nexactly what happens next and whether T\u00e1r will survive the storm or face a big\ncomeuppance. However, it takes a great deal of patience on the part of the\nviewer to get to this point in the film. It just managed to pull me in, but\nmany viewers understandably won\u2019t be able to relate to the less-than-charming\ncentral figure and find the running time too long to wade through. In the end,\nthe opening beats of T\u00e1r<\/em> are too slow to generate much excitement, but\nit does somehow manage to end on a memorable note.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
