This motion picture from Fox Searchlight opens in San Diego on October 28th\u00a0and\u00a0expands\u00a0to\u00a0other\u00a0regions\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0coming\u00a0weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em> is a very unusual film set\nin the early 1920s on an island off the coast of Ireland. At one point fairly\nearly in the tale, one of the central characters stares off into the distance,\nwatching soldiers fight in a civil war taking place on the mainland. He wonders\naloud how and why his countrymen would possibly want to hurt each other. Unfortunately,\na bizarre experience in his own life suddenly begins to reveal just how quickly\nrelationships can sour. The latest film from writer\/director Martin McDonagh (In\nBruges, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri<\/em>) is a\nbrilliantly written feature that manages to effortlessly shift from an amusing\nblack comedy to something far more tragic and melancholy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

P\u00e1draic S\u00failleabh\u00e1in (Colin Farrell) is a simple farmer and\nnice guy who lives modestly with his sister Siobh\u00e1n (Kerry Condon). Each day,\nhe enjoys going for a drink at the village bar and spending time with his\nfriend Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson). That is, until Colm tells him point\nblank that their friendship is over and that he doesn\u2019t want to ever speak with\nhim again. A baffled P\u00e1draic pushes for answers, infuriating Colm so much that\na seemingly fanatical ultimatum is delivered. As each day passes, the two men\nbecome further entrenched and unwilling to compromise in getting what they\nwant. Not only does their conflict make their own lives difficult, but it also\naffects those around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tone is very low-key early on and as mentioned, it\u2019s very funny as P\u00e1draic pesters his pal and tries to get to the bottom of what is going on. Of course, others in the bar and around town also have their opinions and advice, leading to plenty of witty banter. This movie is largely reliant on its stars and the conversation-heavy screenplay. Thankfully, everyone delivers in spades. Both Gleeson and Farrell make powerful impressions in their lead roles. For this reviewer, Farrell\u2019s work is fantastic as a meek farmer who slowly becomes bolder and eventually vengeful. Gleeson also has a lot to work with as his exasperated character becomes fervently determined to excise P\u00e1draic from his life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the barbs come fast and furious, the script and cast\nperfectly and subtly manage to smoothly transition into more serious material.\nBoth of these leads are deeply flawed and the movie deals with personal issues\nlike loneliness, as well as feelings of a unique kind of unreclaimable loss.\nAlong the way, P\u00e1draic and Colm are both offered solutions or compromises to\ntheir situation, but are so determined to win the struggle that they make\nthings worse for themselves in the process. There\u2019s a feeling of impending doom\nand irreparable damage that is hard to ignore in the final act. This is another\nreason to complement the leads, who are all the more impressive for acting out\nin extreme ways, yet somehow making their concerns relatable enough to keep\nviewers watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And props should also go to Kerry Condon as P\u00e1draic\u2019s\nlevel-headed sister who tries to serve as a mediator, as well as Barry Keoghan\nas a troubled young man with a tragic history living a sad life. Additionally,\nthe photography is striking, with the island locations making a stunning\nbackdrop. And despite the fact that most of the film consists of little more\nthan people talking to one another, the editing is equally skilled. When\ncharacters do act out, it feels violent, brutal and disturbing to witness. This\nis a direct result of the way the movie has been cut. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re comfortable with thick accents, a story more\ninterested in discussions than action and themes which may be open to some\ninterpretation, this film is a gem. In fact, The Banshees of Inisherin<\/em>\nis one of the year\u2019s best movies. It\u2019s a pitch-black comedy with a lot going on\nbeneath the surface and stands as a distinctive and thought-provoking mediation\non the toll of unnecessary conflicts and how personal relationships can crumble\nwith the greatest of ease.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
