After a revelation at the\nend of the previous film sends the young male lead into a dark and depressed\nstate in London, his girlfriend decides to return to Seattle and focus on\nimproving her own life. As the two try to work on themselves, fate brings them\ntogether once again. In general, these titles haven\u2019t been well received, but\nthis effort has the same notorious reputation as the third movie in the\nfranchise. It garnered nothing but negative press. All reviewers state that the\ncharacters seem stuck in a loop, experiencing the same relationship issues over\nand over again. They called the movie repetitive, corny and extremely dull. It\nstars Josephine Langford, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Arielle Kebbel, Chance Perdomo,\nRob Estes and Mira Sorvino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AMONG THE LIVING \u2013 Looking for a low-budget, independent\nzombie film? This British title follows a young man and his sister trying to\nsurvive after blood-thirsty, virus-infected humans have overrun the planet.\nSearching for their father, the two protagonists travel the backroads where\nthey meet an older man who provides them shelter. Unfortunately, he isn\u2019t as\nfriendly as he initially appears, putting their lives at further risk and\nforcing them to escape his home. There aren\u2019t many reviews available for this\nextremely low-budget title. A few have popped up online suggesting that the\ntechnical specs are good but that there isn\u2019t much of a story. They note that\nthe pacing really drags as a result. Dean Michael Gregory, George Newton and Melissa\nWorsey headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n AQUA TEAM FOREVER: PHANTASM \u2013 It has been a little more than\n20 years since the animated TV-series Aqua Teen Hunger Force<\/em> first aired\non the Cartoon Network. Over that period, a 2007 film also played in theaters.\nThe latest feature-length follow-up tells us that the heroic anthropomorphic\nfast-food heroes have experienced a falling out and have separated. When a tech\nmogul and his mega-corporation \u201cAmazin\u201d threatens the world, the team reunites\nto save everyone. This title was made for and is debuting on disc and so it is\ndifficult to find any write-ups at present. One or two have appeared and have\nbeen positive. These notices comment that the movie will please fans of the\nseries and that it delivers plenty of absurdist humor. The voice cast includes\nDana Snyder, Dave Willis, Carey Means, Paul Walter Hauser, Peter Serafinowicz\nand Robert Smigel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DEVIL\u2019S WORKSHOP \u2013 An actor trying to land a role in a\nhorror movie made in the style of The Exorcist<\/em> gets an important\ncallback after impressing producers. In order to secure the part, the performer\nputs out an ad asking if any demonologists would allow him to accompany them so\nthat he can learn the ropes. A woman answers his message and invites the\nprotagonist to join her and help with a ritual. As you might have guessed, he\ngets in over his head. Reaction was split on this independent genre picture.\nHalf wrote that it started well but had difficulty juggling horror and humor\nelements, losing them in the process. Just as many admired the work of the cast\nand found the tale unusual and satisfying enough to earn a recommendation. It\nfeatures Radha Mitchell, Timothy Granaderos, Emile Hirsch and Sarah Coffey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n DIG \u2013 A dad with impulse control issues attempts to rebuild\na relationship with his estranged daughter by taking up renovation work in the\ncountry. Unfortunately, it soon appears that the protagonist isn\u2019t the greatest\njudge of character either. After dragging his offspring along to the house,\nthey discover that the owners are murderers. Trapped onsite, the pair are\nforced to work together to survive the ordeal. The press largely panned this\nsuspense picture. One or two liked the cast, were impressed by the film\u2019s score\nand thought it worked to provide viewers with a thrill or two. Unfortunately,\nthe majority commented that the screenplay was full of plot holes and illogical\nelements. These critics called the end result poorly executed and unexciting.\nThe cast includes Thomas Jane, Liana Liberato, Harlow Jane and Emile\nHirsch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n THE ENFORCER \u2013 A tough-guy mob enforcer working for femme\nfatale boss who runs a cybersex trafficking operation meets a befriends a\n15-year-old runaway. She reminds him of his daughter and he gives her some cash\nto help her. After learning that she has been kidnapped by his own\norganization, he decides to help the youngster escape. As a result, he is\nforced to square off with everyone in his crime family. This action picture\nearned split notices, with slightly more negative reviews than positive ones.\nThose who liked the movie said the lead performances were above average, which\nkept them following the story. However, slightly more complained that\neverything was formulaic and that it didn\u2019t offer anything viewers wouldn\u2019t\nhave already seen done better in dozens of other titles. It stars Antonio\nBanderas, Kate Bosworth, Mojean Aria, Alexis Ren and Zolee Grigg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I LOVE MY DAD \u2013 Inspired by a bizarre true story, this comedy\nfollows an estranged father and his adult son. Frustrated with his dad\u2019s\ninterference in his life, he decides to block his pop from all social media\naccounts. Fearful that he may have lost his boy for good, the father creates an\nonline profile (posing as an attractive woman) and lies to maintain their\nrelationship. Things get very, very awkward when his son falls in love with the\nfake persona and wants to meet. Overall, the consensus on the film was very\nupbeat. About one-quarter of reviewers found the concept too icky and gross to\nenjoy. Everyone else called the movie cringe-inducing and hilarious in all the\nright ways, saying it had great performances and that the story took plenty of\nenjoyably unpredictable turns. The cast includes Patton Oswalt, James Morosini\n(who was also the writer and director), Claudia Sulewski, Lil Rel Howery and\nAmy Landecker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE \u2013 French filmmaker Quentin Dupieux is\nknown for making quirky and occasionally dark and creepy comedies (like the\nrecent Deerskin<\/em>). His latest involves a couple searching for a new home\nin the suburbs. Their real estate agent finds them an incredible place, but\ntells them it has a very unusual secret hidden in the basement. The pair can\u2019t\nresist the deal and find themselves moving in, eventually learning about the\nunusual, life-changing feature. This foreign-language film received excellent\nnotices. One or two couldn\u2019t get on its wavelength and found the deadpan humor\nannoying. Everyone else was completely hooked, saying that it was unique,\nincredibly sharp, fast-paced (it only runs about 75 minutes) and very funny.\nAlain Chabat, L\u00e9a Drucker, Benoit Magimel and Anais Demoustier headline the\nfeature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME \u2013 Based on the famous short story by Richard Connell, this thriller involves a father and son who are shipwrecked on an island. As it turns out, a sinister millionaire lives there who leads an elite group of hunters who target human prey. The stranded heroes try to evade death and use their brains to fight back against their heavily armed pursuers. This tale has been told many times before (it was first adapted in 1932 and later in movies like A Game of Death, Hard Target, Surviving the Game <\/em>and The Hunt<\/em>). At present, this version hasn\u2019t impressed critics. Those who have seen it write that the writing is clunky, the action isn\u2019t particularly exciting and that the final result is unmemorable. It features Chris ‘C.T.’ Tamburello, Casper Van Dien, Bruce Dern, Tom Berenger and Judd Nelson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE POWER OF THE DOG \u2013 Readers of this column will already\nbe aware that many Netflix films have slowly been arriving on disc (often\nthrough Criterion). The latest film to premiere on the format is this western\nfrom the end of 2021 that was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won an Oscar\nfor Best Director. The plot involves a rancher who inspires fear from those\naround him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, the nasty\nfigure soon torments the pair. However, as time passes relationships change in\nunexpected ways. As the award nominations suggest, the film earned raves. A\nhandful wrote that it was mean-spirited and cruel, but all others regarded it\nas a brilliant meditation on toxic masculinity with a sting at the end of the\nstory. They also praised the exceptional performances. Benedict Cumberbatch,\nKirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee headline the movie. It is\navailable as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set or as a standalone Blu-ray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n SHE WILL \u2013 In this UK horror picture, an aging film star\nundergoes a double mastectomy. She and her nurse head off to an unusual retreat\nin the Scottish countryside. Not long after arriving, the protagonist begins\nhaving vivid and unusual visions. She soon learns that the locale stands on the\nfinal resting spot of a coven of witches who were burned at the stake. She\nbegins to suspect that the retreat is giving her strange and incredible powers.\nThe press gave very high marks to this independent chiller. A tiny contingent\ncomplained that the movie was all style and no substance. But everyone else\nthought it was visually stunning and atmospheric, dealing with feminist themes\nin an intriguing and fascinating manner. The movie is presented by Dario Argento\nand also earned a positive blurb from filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron. It stars\nAlice Krige, Kota Eberhardt, Malcolm McDowell and Rupert Everett.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE WITCH 2: THE OTHER ONE \u2013 Also known as The Witch:\nPart 2 \u2013 The Other One<\/em>, this South Korean chiller (and sequel to the 2018\noriginal) begins with a teenager waking up in a laboratory. She escapes into\nthe wilderness during a violent raid and is rescued by a civilian couple. As\nscientists and mobsters close in, the girl\u2019s history and her incredible powers\nare revealed. Reaction was more positive than negative towards this feature.\nAbout one-third of write-ups critiqued the movie for juggling too many elements\nand being overlong. Still, most suggested that the movie was an\nunapologetically wild and crazy genre sequel that expanded its scope while\nwowing with spectacular set pieces. Some even said they couldn\u2019t wait for the\nnext chapter. It features Cynthia, Min-soo Jo, Kim Da-Mi, Park Eun-bin and Jin\nGoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re looking for something a little older, you have\nplenty of options as well. Arrow Video is presenting a Blu-ray of Audrey\nRose<\/em> (1977), a genre picture about a couple who are visited by a strange\nman who claims that their daughter is the reincarnation of his deceased child.\nThe movie is from famed director Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still<\/em>,\nWest Side Story, The Haunting, The Sound of Music<\/em>) and it stars Anthony\nHopkins and Marsha Mason. Technical specs include a new 2K restoration of the\nmovie from a 4K scan, as well as a film critic commentary, an interview with a\nmagician about reincarnation, a featurette on the locations used in the film, a\nvisual essay on the movie\u2019s themes, an archived discussion with the\nscreenwriter and c-star Marsha Mason, a look at the musical score, and tons of\npublicity materials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I, the Jury<\/em> (1953) is getting the deluxe treatment\nfrom ClassicFlix. This Mike Hammer tale involves the angry private investigator\nhunting down the figure or figures who murdered his best friend and war buddy.\nIt was originally released in 3D and this \u201cLimited Edition\u201d set includes a 4K\nUltra HD disc, a 3D Blu-ray and a regular Blu-ray. As expected, the release\ncontains an impressive 4K restoration, two movie expert commentaries, excerpts\nwith one of the historians, a look at the 3D used in the movie, an unaired Mike\nHammer TV show pilot from 1954, a couple other TV adaptations of the story and\nmore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If low-budget genre fare is more to your liking, you\ncan pick up Blu-rays of the science-fiction sequels Trancers 4: Jack of Swords<\/em>\n(1994) (which has been specially remastered) and Trancers 5: Sudden Deth<\/em>\n(1995) from Full Moon Pictures. Bonuses include trailers and a promo reel for\nthe studio and its products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino is delivering the comedy Bedtime for Bonzo<\/em> (1951)\nstarring Ronald Reagan (before he became the President in the 1980s) as a\nprofessor trying to use a chimp for an experiment that will impress the father\nof the woman who he wants to marry. The movie has never been particularly\nwell-received but does serve as a curious novelty, especially given what\neventually happened to the lead actor. You\u2019ll get a 2K restoration of the movie\nalong with a film expert commentary and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Clint Eastwood thriller Escape from Alcatraz<\/em>\n(1979) is arriving as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. Set in 1960, it details a\ndaring attempt by three convicts to escape the most notorious prison in the\ncountry. Besides the improved picture quality, the release comes with a critic\ncommentary, an interview with screenwriter Richard Tuggle and co-star Larry\nHankin, as well as a newly remastered trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, the Bob Hope\/Lucille Ball western\/comedy Fancy\nPants<\/em> (1950) is getting the Blu-ray treatment. It was remastered in HD by\nParamount Pictures from a 4K scan of the original elements and also comes with\na trailer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n LionsGate are putting out another disc in their popular Vestron Video line. This one is for the eccentric comedy\/musical Earth Girls Are Easy<\/em> (1988) starring Geena Davis, Jeff Goldblum, Jim Carrey, Damon Wayans, Julie Brown and Michael McKeon. The plot follows a Southern California woman who befriends three furry aliens and helps them adapt to life in Los Angeles after their spaceship crashes in her swimming pool. This \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d Blu-ray comes with an audio commentary with co-star and co-writer Julie Brown, interviews with director Julien Temple (Absolute Beginners<\/em> and many of the music videos you saw in the 1980s), Brown, director of photography Oliver Stapleton and the make-up effects supervisor. You\u2019ll also get vintage interviews, footage from the premiere, behind-the-scenes footage, deleted scenes and outtakes and a ton of trailers and other publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The John Travolta disco-drama Saturday Night Fever<\/em>\n(1977) is celebrating its 45-year anniversary with a 4K Ultra HD, regular\nBlu-ray and Director\u2019s Cut Blu-ray of the film courtesy of Paramount Pictures.\nNaturally, the image and sound quality will be greatly improved for this\nrelease. One expects that this edition will also include all of the previously-released\nextras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Scorpion is putting out some Blu-rays of genre pics. This\nweek, it seems that most of the titles are action-themed. Bruce Dern stars in\nthe biker movie The Cycle Savages<\/em> (1969) aka Portrait of Violence<\/em>.\nIt includes an interview with co-star Maray Ayers. In L.A. Bounty<\/em>\n(1989), Sybil Danning plays a rogue bounty hunter seeking out a killer (played\nby Wings Hauser). There are no extras on this disc. The Peace Killers<\/em>\n(1971) is another picture about a motorcycle gang. This Blu-ray comes with a\ndirector commentary track and an interview with two actors who appear in the\nfilm. Additionally, the cult flick A Small Town in Texas<\/em> (1976) is\narriving in high definition. It follows an ex-con who returns home to discover\nthat his ex is now living with the cop who put him away. This all leads to a\nviolent showdown. The movie stars Timothy Bottoms, Bo Hopkins and Susan\nGeorge. You\u2019ll get a new 2019 HD master of the film, an interview with Hopkins\nand a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Italian drama The Nun and the Devil<\/em> (1973) is now\navailable on Blu-ray from Twilight Time. It details a power struggle within a\nchurch as a Catholic nun attempt to become Abbess. The disc includes cast and\ncrew interviews as well as a documentary on the director and an examination of the\n\u201cnunsploitation\u201d genre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Believe it or not, it has been 20 years since Universal\nreleased 8 Mile<\/em> (2002) at cinemas. To celebrate, they\u2019re presenting it\nin a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. It contains upgraded picture and sound for\nthe title and well as all of the previously released extras. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally, Warner Bros. is releasing an 80th<\/sup>\nAnniversary Edition of the classic Casablanca<\/em> (1942) in 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray. The movie is the pride and joy of the studio and now you can own it\nwith the best possible picture and sound quality. The new image was restored\nand remastered from a 2022 4K 16-bit film scan of the best-surviving nitrate\nfilm elements, along with the original mono soundtrack.
