<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nBROKER \u2013 This drama from South Korea details two individuals\nwho partake in an illegal operation selling orphaned infants to the wealthy.\nRationalizing their business by stating that the babies are going to opulent\nhomes, the unexpected arrival of a mother and a newborn surprises them. She wants\nher baby to be taken in by a rich family and insists on supervising their\nsearch. The group form an unlikely bond as they seek out the right parents for\nthis baby. Response was very positive towards this foreign-language\nfeature. A small percentage didn\u2019t think the movie worked, calling it\noverlong, mushy and difficult to relate to. Still, the vast majority suggested\nit effectively handled its unusual subject matter and complimented the end\nresults as thought-provoking. It stars Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-Won, Bae Doo-Na\nand Lee Ji-eun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nEMPIRE OF LIGHT \u2013 Set in a seaside town in the 1980s, this\nstory follows a young black man who takes a job at a movie theater. There, he\nmeets and gets close to other employees, including ushers, the projectionist\nand a duty manager. Despite the age gap, he and the duty manager hit it off and\nbegin a relationship. When she starts behaving erratically, the young man isn\u2019t\nsure how to help. Reaction from North American critics towards this title was\nslightly more negative than positive. Almost half thought it was gorgeously\nshot (it has since been nominated for an Oscar for its cinematography). They\nalso believed it had complex characters and subtly conveyed how movies provide\na very brief respite in troubled lives. However, slightly more called the film\ndull and took issue with the central relationship, saying it wasn\u2019t believable.\nThe cast includes Olivia Colman, Michael Ward, Colin Firth, Toby Jones, Crystal\nClarke and Tanya Moodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE INSPECTION \u2013 Based on the real experiences of the film\u2019s\nwriter\/director, this tale is about a young, gay black man whose mother disowns\nhim. With no prospects on the horizon, he decides to apply for a position in\nthe Marines. The protagonist decides to do whatever it takes to succeed,\nbattling prejudice and the tough physical conditions of basic training. Along\nthe way, he makes friends and begins to see a future for himself. Overall, the\npress liked this film. A small number thought its points were delivered with\nthe subtlety of a sledgehammer and that it had a lot of contradictory messages.\nStill, the consensus was that the cast were uniformly excellent and the story\nwas powerful and handled the lead\u2019s emotional journey in an inspiring way. It\nfeatures Jeremy Pope, Ra\u00fal Castillo, McCaul Lombardi, Aaron Dominguez, Bokeem\nWoodbine and Gabrielle Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Filipino caregiver\nunexpectedly arrives and tells the fashionista that she knows a cure for her\ntroubles. The nurse\u2019s traditional folk healing methods have an immediate\npositive effect, but before long the designer\u2019s husband becomes concerned that\nthis guest is controlling his spouse and plotting something sinister. Critics\ngenerally enjoyed this genre film. Nearly one-third did complain that the\nthemes were less-than-subtle and that there weren\u2019t any real surprises or\nshocks. Regardless, most complimented the creepy atmosphere generated by the\nevents and thought that it had enough distressing moments to earn it a\nrecommendation. It stars Eva Green, Mark Strong, Chai Fonacier, Billie Gadsdon\nand Cathy Belton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After more than a\ndecade, he and his family are living a quiet and happy existence on a ranch.\nThat is, until an outlaw and his gang arrive and try to take hostages.\nDetermined to protect those around him, the killer decides to dust off his\nweapons. He also gets help from an unlikely source, his sharp-shooting\n12-year-old daughter. Reviews weren\u2019t particularly strong for this effort.\nAbout one-third of write-ups liked the cast and said the onscreen personalities\nwere so entertaining that they were intrigued to see what happened. But the\nremainder commented that the screenplay didn\u2019t make the most of its intriguing\nconcept, saying the end results were formulaic and uninteresting. Nicolas Cage,\nRyan Kiera Armstrong, Clint Howard and Abraham Benrubi headline the\nfilm. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nTHE PRICE WE PAY \u2013 Two crooks rob a pawn shop and get more\nthan they bargained for at the beginning of this thriller. They take a hostage\nand hit the road, only to have their vehicle break down in the middle of\nnowhere. The group go to a nearby farm and ask if they can wait for car\nassistance on the property. After they wander around and find a secret barn\ndoor, the group discover some truly horrifying things occurring onsite. This\ngenre-switching effort split the press. Half of reviewers suggested that while\nit started off interestingly, once the horror kicked in the true emphasis was\non the gore rather than the characters. By the time the climax arrived, they\nhad lost interest in the story. Just as many claimed that this was a simple,\nbut energetically shot and effective chiller that blurred the lines between\ngood and evil and delivered everything a genre fan would want. It features\nStephen Dorff, Emile Hirsch, Gigi Zumbado, Tyler Sanders and Vernon Wells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As he gets deeper into the investigation, he becomes\nobsessed with seeking retribution. Despite a friend\u2019s warning that he can\u2019t\nreturn to a normal existence after committing murder, the lead travels into the\ncriminal underground to find vengeance. Genre critics enjoyed this\nhorror\/revenge feature. A small number stated that its influences were obvious\nand that it tried too hard to be shocking, instead coming off as ridiculous. Still,\nthe majority called the movie effective, were impressed by the make-up effects\nand thought it interestingly depicted how much an individual changes in their\nquest for revenge. The cast includes Michael Lombardi, Marc Menchaca, Joseph\nGatt, Katie Kelly, and features appearances by Five Finger Death Punch, Tommy\nLee, Papa Roach and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nRUNNING THE BASES \u2013 This baseball drama and faith-based\npicture follows a small-town baseball coach. After being hired as the head\ncoach for a large high school program, he uproots his family. Not long after\nstarting his tenure, the lead faces strong opposition from the school\nsuperintendent. Simply put, his boss doesn\u2019t appreciate the role religion plays\nin the teacher\u2019s methods and his attempts to bring the players together like a\nfamily. Only a handful of reviewers saw this picture. They stated that it was\nvery preachy and that the acting wasn\u2019t exemplary, but that the tale would\nappeal to its target demographic. A few more have popped up online noting that\nthere\u2019s a lot of fear mongering in the script and that it plays up the lead\ncharacter as being persecuted so much that the movie ends up feeling absurd.\nBrett Varvel, Gigi Orsillo and Todd Terry headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nSALVATORE: SHOEMAKER OF DREAMS \u2013 Salvatore Ferragamo was an\nItalian shoemaker who found work in Hollywood during the silent film era. He\ncreated and dressed stars in innovative and iconic footwear. This documentary\ntells the man\u2019s life story, from growing up in Italy, crossing the sea as a\nyoung man, and setting up shop in motion picture studios. This documentary from\nLuca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and Al<\/em>l)\npremiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020, but it took a while to find a\nrelease date and distributor (perhaps due to the pandemic). Critical reception\nwas generally positive. A small number thought that while genial, it didn\u2019t\nprovide much insight or depth about its subject. Regardless, the consensus was\nthat the documentary brought attention to an important figure and noted his\nrole in shoemaking inspired and changed fashion worldwide. It is narrated by\nMichael Stuhlbarg and features interviews with Martin Scorsese, costume\ndesigner Deborah Nadoolman, and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s plenty of older efforts arriving on disc as well. A\ncouple of months back, 88 Films intended to release the period action film Magnificent\nWarriors<\/em> (1987). It was delayed, but the Blu-ray is finally arriving this\nweek. The tale is set against the backdrop of World War II and stars Michelle\nYeoh as a daredevil pilot and mercenary who tries to gather intelligence for\nChina revealing a potential Japanese invasion. The disc includes the original\ntheatrical cut (including the original ending), a movie expert commentary,\narchival interviews with Yeoh, the stunt coordinator, publicity materials, a\nspecial limited slipcase and a booklet on the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eugenie<\/em> (1970) aka Marquis De Sade’s Philosophy in\nthe Boudoir<\/em> arrives as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set from Blue Underground.\nThis kinky dream-like flick from Jess Franco features Christopher Lee in a\nsupporting role and tells the story of a young woman who vacations on an island\nand finds herself in the company of sexual sadists. It comes with a film\nhistorian commentary, a trailer, an interview with a man who once worked with\nFranco on another feature, a discussion about the movie maker’s body of work, a\nfeaturette on the production history of the movie, a trailer and a poster and\nstill gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dazed and Confused<\/em> (1993) is a brilliant coming-of-age\ntale from writer\/director Richard Linklater (Before Sunrise, School of Rock,\nBernie, Boyhood, Everybody Wants Some!!<\/em>) that follows a group of students\nin Austin on their last day of high school. They gather with friends, party and\nattempt to figure out what their future holds. Criterion is giving the movie\nthe 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray treatment. Well, it appears that the 4K version\nfeatures a new restoration and improved picture quality, but the regular\nBlu-ray is from the distributor\u2019s previous edition. It comes with all of the\nsame, exceptional extras from the last Criterion release of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino is presenting The Crimson Rivers<\/em> (2000) on\nBlu-ray. This French murder\/mystery stars Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel and\ninvolves detectives hunting down a killer at a prestigious university in the\nAlps. Extras include a director commentary with the two stars, a documentary on\nthe movie, a making-of, storyboard comparisons with commentary, a multi-angle\nfeaturette on a big avalanche sequence, as well as a theatrical trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Hunter<\/em> (1980) is also appearing on Blu-ray from\nthe distributor. The film marks Steve McQueen\u2019s last film role. He plays a\nbounty hunter who is pursued by a vengeful psychopath. The movie has received a\n4K restoration for this release, in addition to a film historian commentary\ntrack, trailers and TV sets. The first copies also include a slipcase for the\ndisc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, The Werewolf of Washington<\/em> (1973) is\nbeing released on Blu-ray. Dean Stockwell plays a press reporter who is bitten\nby a werewolf while visiting Hungary. He gets a job as a press assistant to the\nPresident as bodies start piling up at The White House. This disc presents a 4K\nrestoration of the Director\u2019s Cut that was prepared by the filmmaker shortly\nbefore his passing in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mill Creek is releasing Epic Showdowns \u2013 4 Action Movies<\/em>,\ncontaining four pictures from the 1990s. You\u2019ll get The Cowboy Way<\/em>\n(1994), The Jackal<\/em> (1997), Kull the Conqueror<\/em> (1997) and End\nof Days<\/em> (1999) all in one set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Requiem for a Heavyweight<\/em> (1962) is a drama written\nby Rod Serling (of The Twilight Zone<\/em> fame) about a washed-up heavyweight\nboxer with head trauma struggling to make it in the regular world. He attempts\nto land one last fight to make some cash. The cast includes Anthony Quinn,\nJackie Gleason, Mickey Rooney and Julie Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The action picture Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit<\/em> (2014)\nis being rereleased in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set from Paramount. Chris Pine\ntakes over the role of the heroic CIA analyst (also played by Alec Baldwin,\nHarrison Ford and Ben Affleck) in this prequel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! Factory is putting out several titles as well. The\nfirst is Giovanni\u2019s Island<\/em> (2014), an animated post-WWII feature from\nJapan about a pair of kids who live on a tiny fishing island and make friends\nwith a little girl arriving from Russia. It comes with a making-of, an\ninterview with one of the voice actors, a music video and an art\ngallery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n They also have a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Collector\u2019s Edition\nof the classic The Magnificent Seven<\/em> (1960). This tale follows a group\nof gunfighters with shady pasts who are hired to protect a small Mexican town\nfrom an invading force of bandits. It stars Yul Breener, Steve McQueen, Charles\nBronson, Eli Wallach, Robert Vaughn and James Coburn. Besides the new picture\nrestoration, you\u2019ll also receive multiple archived commentary tracks, a\nmaking-of, lost images, publicity materials and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, you can pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\ndouble-feature of the slashers The Slumber Party Massacre<\/em> (1982) and The\nSlumber Party Massacre II<\/em> (1987). Both films have been given new, upgraded\n4K scans from the original camera negative and come with commentary tracks and\nloads of publicity materials. The Blu-ray of the second movie also contains an\nunrated cut of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, Sony is presenting the Catherine Deneuve drama Indochine\n<\/em>(1992) on Blu-ray. The film won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language\nFilm during its original release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Remains of the Day<\/em> (1993) is being given a 30th<\/sup>\nAnniversary 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release. This Merchant\/Ivory production is\nset in post-World War I England and details the unrequited love between a\nbutler and housekeeper. Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson star. The movie\nearned 8 Oscar nominations. This disc includes all previously released bonuses\nlike archived commentary tracks, deleted scenes and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ring-a-Ding Rhythm<\/em> (1962) is a musical comedy from\nthe UK directed by Richard Lester (who would shoot A Hard Day\u2019s Night<\/em>\nonly a couple of years later). It follows a group of teens who try to put on a\nmusic festival in their small hometown, calling up rock \u2018n roll and jazz\ngreats. Del Shannon, The Dukes of Dixieland, Gary (U.S.) Bonds, the inimitable\nChubby Checker, Gene Vincent and many others appear in this title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a slow edition for children\u2019s programming, but Pok\u00e9mon<\/em>\nenthusiasts do have one title to look forward to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pok\u00e9mon The Series: Black & White Adventures in Unova\nand Beyond<\/em>: The Complete Series (Warner Bros.)
