Welcome back to another look at highlights arriving on\nBlu-ray and DVD. It\u2019s a remarkably busy edition with plenty of titles in\nvarious genres for every member of the household. So, if you can\u2019t make it out\nto the movies this week or need to stay indoors, be sure to give one of these\nfilms a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE ADVENTURES OF JURASSIC PET 2: THE LOST SECRET \u2013 Also\nknown as The Adventures of Jurassic Pet: The Lost Secret<\/em>, this\nlive-action family feature is a sequel to a 2019 film about a teenager who\nsaves a friendly baby dinosaur from a mad scientist. This follow-up involves a\nnew young lead and her grandmother. The pair guard a doorway to a world filled\nwith dinosaurs. When a baby dino escapes into our world and ends up being\npursued by criminals, the two leads and a new friend try to save the creature\nand get it back home. This title is only being released on DVD. It is\npremiering on disc and besides a somewhat cheesy trailer, there is no\ninformation or reviews currently available for the movie. It features Sophie\nProctor, Myles Currin-Moore, LaRonn Marzett, Carolyn Josephine Wright and Drew\nPollock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DETECTIVE KNIGHT: INDEPENDENCE \u2013 The final chapter in the\nlow-budget Detective Knight<\/em> action series finds the title protagonist\nback in his hometown working on the streets. On Independence Day, an unbalanced\nEMT worker decides to go on the rampage by impersonating a cop. The lead\nattempts to locate and capture the maniac before any more lives are taken.\nCuriously enough, all three chapters in this series have received similar\ncritical notices, with generally more positive reviews than negative ones.\nAbout one-third of write-ups commented that the plot didn\u2019t provide any thrills\nor make an emotional impact and was merely a by-the-numbers action picture. The\nrest thought that the story allowed the lead to question some of his values and\nnoted the series finale was strong enough to earn a recommendation. It stars\nBruce Willis, Lochlyn Munro, Willow Shields, Jack Kilmer and Trevor Gretzky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DEVOTION \u2013 Set in 1950, this tale follows two recruits who\nare paired up while serving in the Navy Fighter Squadron. They are asked to fly\na Vought F4U Corsair together and soon form a close friendship in the process.\nWhen the Korean War breaks out, the two are sent as support for South Korean\nforces and must risk their lives flying into battle with North Korea and China.\nThe press admired this feature and gave it solid marks. A small contingent\ncomplained that the relationship between the two lead characters wasn\u2019t\nparticularly well developed and that their interactions came across as stiff,\nhurting the film. Regardless, most thought the cast were engaging, the\nscreenplay delivered interesting subtext and that it was an impressive effort\npromoting the power of friendship. The film is available in a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray set or just as a Blu-ray. The cast includes Glen Powell, Jonathan\nMajors, Joe Jonas and Christina Jackson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

FOXHOLE \u2013 This independent war drama has an unusual concept.\nIt is set over a period of 36 hours and details three groups of soldiers\ntrapped in confined spaces during different wars \u2013 The American Civil War,\nWorld War I and the Iraq War. Viewers see them grapple with combat and see\nconnections and similarities between the various time periods. Response towards\nthe feature was generally good. One-third stated that the movie struggled to\nbuild tension and resorted to false sentimentality in order to elicit sympathy\nfrom the viewer. Still, the majority admired the film\u2019s ambitiousness and\nthought it was a unique and impactful little title. It features James Le Gros,\nAndi Matichak, Alex Breaux and Alex Hurt. Unusually enough, this title is a\nVinegar Syndrome exclusive and will only be available on their website until March\n28th<\/sup> (when it will be available on other sites).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

GOD\u2019S COUNTRY \u2013 Based on a short story by New York Times<\/em>\nbestselling author James Lee Burke, this film involves a college professor\nliving in the remote mountains of the American West. When she catches two\nhunters trespassing on her property and confronts them, they don\u2019t respond well\nto being chided. In fact, they start playing tricks and frustrating the\nproperty owner. The professor stands up for herself, but as events progress a\nviolent showdown begins to look inescapable. The press rated this feature\nhighly. A tiny number of reviewers thought the movie had tonal imbalances,\nveering from drama to western to thriller and losing them in the process.\nStill, this approach didn\u2019t bother many other reviewers. They thought the\nperformances were outstanding and that all of the characters were flawed,\nmaking the story more interesting and unpredictable. It stars Thandiwe Newton,\nJoris Jarsky, Jefferson White, Tanaya Beatty and Jeremy Bobb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HUNT \u2013 After a North Korean official requests asylum and\nreveals shocking information about a spy, two leaders from different divisions\nof South Korea\u2019s top spy agency are tasked with handling the case. They learn\nthat a mole is embedded somewhere within their group and is sending vital\ninformation across the border. Both agents end up investigating each other\u2019s\nteam members in order to find the individual – tensions build between everyone\nas secrets are revealed. Response towards this thriller from South Korea was\ngenerally positive. A fair number of critics called the film so overly\ncomplicated and filled with red herrings that it all became a bit silly.\nHowever, the consensus was that the film was fast-paced and well-acted,\nproviding viewers with a wild story that delivered subtle nods to the\ncomplicated relationship between the two countries. The cast includes Lee\nJung-jae, Go Yoon-jung and Kim Nam-gil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

INBETWEEN GIRL \u2013 After the sudden divorce of her parents, a\nteenage artist is pressured by a friend to attend a school dance. Of course,\nthe protagonist is immediately grilled about who she\u2019d like to go with. She\nends up mentioning a schoolmate (who has a girlfriend) that regularly gives her\nrides home. When he finds out and talks to her about it, she feels even more\nawkward as she is forced to navigate her way through new feelings and\nrelationships. This independent coming-of-age comedy\/drama was well-received by\nreviewers. One or two thought that it attempted to address too many elements\nand ultimately didn\u2019t feel true to any of them. But everyone else liked how all\nthe youths were developed and wrote that they were amused by the scenarios\npresented, complimenting the final product. Emma Galbraith, William Magnuson,\nEmily Garrett and Liz Waters headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LITTLE DIXIE \u2013 In this crime\/thriller, a Special Forces\noperative is hired to negotiate a truce between a Mexican drug organization and\nan ambitious US state governor. Things initially go smoothly, but when the\ngovernor celebrates the execution of a high-ranking cartel member in public,\nthe truce immediately dissolves. Caught in the middle, the mediator finds\nhimself and his young daughter being targeted. This picture garnered a few more\npositive write-ups than it did negative ones. Those who disliked it thought the\nhero made too many obvious mistakes and that it all felt like a poor clone of a\nLiam Neeson-esque action picture. A few more thought the lead was good and that\nthe movie was lean and mean, presenting plenty of gritty moments. For the time\nbeing, this is a DVD-only release. It features Frank Grillo, Eric Dane, Peter\nGreene, Beau Knapp, Sufe Bradshaw and Annabeth Gish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

THE MAN IN THE BASEMENT \u2013 If you\u2019re looking for some\ninternational fare, this French mystery\/thriller is another option. The plot\nfollows a Jewish couple who decide to earn extra money by selling the unused\nbasement of their house. They choose a former history teacher who seems like a\nnice man. Unfortunately, the couple discover that the man living beneath them\nis an anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist. As the husband and wife try to figure\nout how to cancel the sale, the buyer befriends their teenage daughter. This\neffort was well-received by the press. A small number thought that the film\nlost momentum as it progressed and described the ending as unsatisfying.\nHowever, all others called the movie gripping from beginning to end. They\npraised it as a sharply written cautionary tale that sends chills down the\nspine. At present, this title is a DVD-only release in North America. It stars\nFran\u00e7ois Cluzet, J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Renier and B\u00e9r\u00e9nice Bejo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH \u2013 The sword-wielding cat\nreturns once again in this sequel and Shrek<\/em> series spin-off. After an\naccident, the title character discovers that he has used up almost all of his\nnine lives. Fearful that his next brave act might finish him off for good, he\nfinds himself on the run from a mysterious and threatening figure. When the cat\nlearns of a way to restore his nine lives, he decides to embark on a fateful\njourney. Critics adored the latest chapter and it has been nominated for Best\nAnimated Film at the Academy Awards. A lone voice or two found it dull and\ndidn\u2019t think it compared to previous entries. But the consensus was that the\nfilm was visually gorgeous, had a lot of great characters and funny moments,\nand even dealt with issues like mortality in a compelling manner. The title is\navailable for purchase in a Blu-ray and DVD combo set. The voice cast includes\nAntonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Olivia Colman, Florence Pugh, Harvey Guill\u00e9n,\nRay Winstone, Samson Kayo, John Mulaney and Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

WHITNEY HOUSTON: I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY \u2013 This biopic\ncharts the life and career of award-winning vocalist Whitney Houston. The story\ntracks her rise from obscurity as she is unexpectedly discovered by a record\nexecutive. It also follows her as she records her first album and soars to the\ntop of the charts, as well as showing the many struggles she endured in her\npersonal life after reaching superstardom. This title didn\u2019t wow as many\nmembers of the press as it hoped to. A small contingent thought the\nperformances were good and the movie did a solid job of recounting some of the\nnegative aspects of her life that led to trouble. However, most thought that\nthe movie was a superficial effort that felt phony and didn\u2019t really get into\nthe heart and soul of its subject. It stars Naomi Ackie, Stanley Tucci, Nafessa\nWilliams, Tamara Tunie, Clarke Peters and Ashton Sanders.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an incredibly busy week for older titles receiving high-definition upgrades. Arrow Video is presenting Millionaires\u2019 Express<\/em> (1986) as a \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Blu-ray. Directed by and starring Sammo Hung (along with a cast of all-stars from Hong Kong cinema), it is an action film with western overtones. The story follows a low-level crook on the run from a bounty hunter who winds up back in his hometown. When a train arrives carrying a desirable item, thugs arrive to rob the passenger and anyone else who crosses their path. The lead and other quirky personalities have to work together to prevent the theft. The 2-disc set contains four different versions of the movie, two film historian audio commentaries (and a third scene specific track with co-star Cynthia Rothrock), and a recent interview with Rothrock. You\u2019ll also get archived discussions from 2007 with Hung, co-stars Yuen Biao and Yukari Oshima.Additionally, it comes with alternate credits, numerous trailers and more. Read a detailed review of the disc here. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British David Farrar\/Geraldine Fitzgerald murder\/mystery\nObsessed <\/em>(1951) is arriving on Blu-ray from ClassicFlix. It involves a\nwealthy dowager who drops dead. Soon, just about everyone in town ends up being\na suspect in her death, including the woman\u2019s husband. The picture has been given\na 4K restoration, meaning it\u2019ll look better than ever on this release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is presenting the hilarious independent Robert\nTownsend comedy Hollywood Shuffle<\/em> (1987) on Blu-ray. The actor plays,\nwell, an actor in Hollywood going to auditions and trying to make a name for\nhimself in show business. Of course, he finds it hard when he is offered\nnothing but stereotypical roles. The film has been given a 4K restoration\napproved by co-writer\/director\/star Townsend. You\u2019ll also get a new Townsend\ncommentary track, interviews with co-stars Rusty Cundieff, Anne-Marie Johnson\nand Bobby McGee. The disc also includes a radio program with the filmmaker, a\ntrailer and an essay on the movie by a critic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy Japanese anime titles, Fist of the North\nStar: The Legend of the True Savior \u2013 Legend of Raoh: Chapter of Death in Love<\/em>\n(2006) is being released by Discotek Media. This is the first time the movie is\nbeing made available on Blu-ray in North America. It comes with the original\nlanguage track (with English subtitles) and a new English dub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

A few weeks back, Disney re-released a few animated titles\nas Wal-Mart exclusives as part of their 100th<\/sup> company anniversary\ncelebration. Each new set contained a Blu-ray and DVD of a film along with a\nCollectible Pin. This week sees even more films arriving under the Disney100\nbanner. You can now purchase 101 Dalmatians<\/em> (1961), The Aristocats<\/em>\n(1970), Frozen II<\/em> (2019), Lady and the Tramp<\/em> (1955), Robin\nHood<\/em> (1973), Sleeping Beauty<\/em> (1959), Tangled<\/em> (2010), Wreck-It-Ralph<\/em>\n(2012) and Zootopia<\/em> (2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino is putting out the Ars\u00e8ne Lupin Collection<\/em>,\nwhich contains the French titles The Adventures of Ars\u00e8ne Lupin<\/em> (1957), Signed,\nArs\u00e8ne Lupin<\/em> (1959) and Ars\u00e8ne Lupin vs. Ars\u00e8ne Lupin<\/em> (1962). They\nall follow the exploits of a master thief. The set also contains a trailer for\nthe third film and arrives in a \u201climited edition\u201d cardboard slipcover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom<\/em> (1968) is also arriving\nfrom the distributor. It stars Shirley MacLaine as a lonely housewife who takes\na lover. He decides to hide in the attic and ends up living there for years\nuntil detectives show up looking for the missing man. The disc includes a 4K\nrestoration of the movie and a film historian commentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The fantastic thriller Marathon Man<\/em> (1976) is being\nput out as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. Dustin Hoffman plays a graduate\nstudent and jogger who is terrorized by a Nazi fugitive (played by Laurence\nOlivier). Besides the new restoration from the original camera negative, it\ncomes with a film historian commentary, a featurette on the movie, rehearsal\nfootage and publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also pick up an \u201ceducational documentary\u201d on nudists\ncalled, appropriately enough, Nudist Life<\/em> (1961). Also included on this\nBlu-ray is the feature 10 Days in a Nudist Camp<\/em> (1957), Shangri-La<\/em>\n(1961) and short films including Back to Nature<\/em> (1955) and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Kino is releasing the adventure flick Secret\nof the Incas<\/em> (1954) on Blu-ray. Charlton Heston stars as a man searching\nfor hidden treasure in the Peruvian jungle. It includes a 4K restoration of the\nmovie from the original camera negative, a film critic commentary and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A24 is a great independent studio that has released some\nexcellent features over the past decade. This week, Lionsgate is putting out a Horror\n5-Film Collection<\/em> Blu-ray containing several memorable titles from the\noutlet. They include Green Room<\/em> (2015), Hereditary<\/em> (2018), It\nComes at Night<\/em> (2017), The Witch<\/em> (2015) and X<\/em> (2022). All of\nthe movies have been previously released, but this is an excellent way to get\nseveral together in one package. This box set is a Wal-Mart Exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lionsgate is releasing B\u2019Twixt Now and Sunrise – The\nAuthentic Cut<\/em> (2011) on Blu-ray. This is a reworked version of the film Twixt<\/em>\nfrom Francis Ford Coppola, which suffered some studio enforced cuts before it\nwas released. Made independently in the filmmaker\u2019s backyard, it stars Val\nKilmer as an author who gets mixed up with Satanists and a spooky entity. The\ndisc includes a 40-minute documentary on the production.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In anticipation of the next chapter in the series, the\ndistributor is making available the John Wick 1 \u2013 3 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\nSteelbook<\/em> box set. This is a Best Buy exclusive that presents each film in\nthe series with an upgraded picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you enjoy movies from Michael Mann (The Last of the\nMohicans, Heat, Collateral<\/em>), you can now pick up Miami Vice<\/em> (2006)\non Blu-ray as a Wal-Mart Exclusive Steelbook. This is the feature film\nadaptation of the TV series that starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. The\npackaging states that it contains the Unrated Director\u2019s Cut of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MPI Media Group is proud to announce the iconic horror\nclassic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/em> (1974) as a 4K Ultra HD release (you\ncan also pick it up in Steelbook packaging). The movie was shot on 16mm film,\nbut it has been given a shiny new 4K picture upgrade that apparently looks great.\nExtras include four archived cast and crew commentary tracks, as well as a\nBlu-ray of a new, never-before-seen feature-length documentary that chronicles\nthe production. It comes with so many other bonuses that there isn\u2019t enough\nspace here to list them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paramount is releasing the Oscar-winning John Wayne\/Maureen\nO\u2019Hara classic The Quiet Man<\/em> (1952) on Blu-ray. And on a completely\ndifferent note, you can also pick up a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of the\noriginal Scream<\/em> (1996) from the same studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking for some genre titles? Severin is delivering The\nDogs<\/em> (1979) on Blu-ray. Not to be confused with the 1977 San Diego-shot\nchiller Dogs<\/em>, this French thriller stars Gerard Depardieu as a trainer\nwho investigates a series of vicious dog attacks in an affluent Paris suburb.\nThe disc includes a 2K restoration of the movie, an interview with the score\ncomposer, a discussion about the title with a film critic, and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses<\/em> (1978) is a\nCanuxpolitation title (basically, a low-budget genre picture from Canada) with\nElke Sommer about a former model who is murdered. The film details a\ncomplicated investigation that leads deep into the criminal underworld. The\nfilm has been given a 2K restoration and includes a film historian commentary,\ncast and crew interviews and more. It even comes with a second Canuck flick\ncalled Recommendation for Mercy<\/em> (1975). This one is inspired by true\nevents and recounts a horrifying child murder and accusations made against\nanother local teen. It arrives with two movie expert commentary tracks, the\noriginal ending to the film and an interview with a cast member.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Severin is putting out the Jess Franco title Sex is\nCrazy<\/em> (1981). It comes with a 2K restoration of the title, interviews with\nFranco experts and more bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Shout! is delivering the underrated Laika animated feature The\nBoxtrolls<\/em> (2014) as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook set. It comes with\nan upgraded image, new packaging and all of the previously included extras. The\nsame goes for the well-regarded Laika film, Kubo and the Two Strings<\/em>\n(2016).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the distributor is putting out a 4K Ultra HD\nand Blu-ray of the fantasy flick, Dragonheart <\/em>(1996). The movie features\nDennis Quaid as a man who befriends a talking dragon (voiced by Sean Connery).\nOnce again, you\u2019ll get an upgraded picture along with previously released\nextras like a director commentary and outtakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout! is also debuting two double-feature discs as exclusives only available on their store website. The first contains the female bank-robber flick The Great Texas Dynamite Chase<\/em> (1976) (pictured above and to the right) and Eat My Dust!<\/em> (1976) starring Ron Howard. This Blu-ray includes new restoration of the movies, as well as some cast and crew interviews on the second movie. The other combo includes the post-apocalyptic features Wheels of Fire<\/em> (1985) and Raiders of the Sun<\/em> (1992). This set contains some bonus interviews and an alternate cut of the second featured title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The well-regarded Spanish feature Amigo<\/em> (2019) is\nappearing on Blu-ray through Dekanalog as a Vinegar Syndrome exclusive until\nMar 28th. This festival favorite is a darkly comic psychological thriller\ndepicting a bitter power struggle between two best friends. The disc comes with\na making-of, deleted scenes and tons of interviews with cast and crew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Warner Bros. is releasing Rocky: The Knockout\nCollection<\/em> box set. It contains 4K Ultra HD versions of Rocky <\/em>(1976),\nRocky II<\/em> (1979), Rocky III<\/em> (1982) and Rocky IV<\/em> (1985), all\nwith improved picture quality. No Blu-rays are included in this release, but\nyou can purchase Rocky<\/em> separately in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set\nexclusively from Best Buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Best Actor Oscar-winning drama Training Day<\/em>\n(2001) is also getting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray upgrade from the studio.\nDenzel Washington took home his first Academy Award as a rogue detective\nshowing the ropes to a rookie cop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a child, this is a fantastic week for titles. Just\nremember that some are exclusives and can only be purchased at a particular\nretailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
