Welcome to another look at some of the highlights arriving\non Blu-ray and DVD. It\u2019s another busy edition with plenty of titles arriving in\na wide variety of genres. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the movies this week\nor need to stay indoors, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

BABY OOPSIE 3: BURN BABY BURN \u2013 The title of this killer\ndoll film from independent, low-budget horror outlet Full Moon Entertainment\nmay sound familiar to readers. That is likely because the last direct-to-disc Baby\nOopsie<\/em> movie was released only two months ago. In this follow-up, the human\nprotagonists discover that the bloodthirsty baby doll Oopsie is now plotting to\nopen a portal to Toy Hell. They attempt to stop the plastic figure from doing\nso, but a couple of playthings through, including a giant clown monster that\nadds to the mayhem. This feature has been available on the streaming service\nTubi for a while and is now debuting on disc. There aren\u2019t many reviews and\nthose that have appeared state that the movie is better than the first sequel,\nbut still pales in comparison to the original and doesn\u2019t feel like a necessary\neffort. It features Libbie Higgins, Justin Armistead and LeJon Woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

CHESS STORY \u2013 Set in 1938 on the cusp of World War II, this\ndrama follows a notary serving the Austrian aristocracy. After Nazis take\ncontrol of the country and Vienna, the Gestapo arrests the man. They demand\nthat he reveal various local bank accounts to them, so that they can take the\nfunds and pay for their war effort. He refuses and is locked in solitary\nconfinement. With nothing else to do, the man begins to study chess. He uses\nhis skills to challenge and fight back against his captors. This co-production\nbetween Austria and Germany earned solid reviews. A small number stated the\nwritten story that the movie was based on was far superior to the film.\nHowever, the vast majority complimented the performances and production design,\ncalling it an unpredictable and effective character study that detailed the\ntrauma that prisoners of war experience. For now, this is a DVD-only release.\nIt stars Oliver Masucci, Birgit Minichmayr and Albrecht Schuch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

COUNTY LINE: NO FEAR \u2013 Here is another sequel to a\ndirect-to-disc title that just arrived on store shelves only a few months ago.\nThis one is another chapter in the 2017 County Line<\/em> and its 2022 County\nLine: All In<\/em> follow-up. These tales tell the story of a grizzled sheriff\ninvolved in various criminal investigations. In this next effort, the\nprotagonist\u2019s planned retirement is delayed when a sheriff from a neighboring\ncounty asks for help in stopping a violent crime syndicate. Unfortunately, this\ntitle is debuting on disc and no one has seen it as of yet. So, it seems the\nmovie is only for viewers who are already familiar with or are fans of the\nprevious titles in the series. This flick will only be available on DVD. The\ncast includes Tom Wopat, Kelsey Crane, Patricia Richardson, Denim Richards,\nCasper Van Dien, Abbi Butler and Joseph Curtis Callender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

DEVIL\u2019S PEAK \u2013 A manipulative meth-dealer in the Appalachian\nMountains rules his business and family with an iron fist. When his son meets a\ngirl and wants to run away with her instead of taking over the operation, it\ncreates violent conflict in the household. The young man decides that the only\nway to be free of his father\u2019s control is to square-off against him. This drama\ndidn\u2019t fare well with critics. About one-third of them enjoyed the work of the\ncast and thought they elevated the material enough to earn the movie a modest\nrecommendation. Sadly, the consensus was that the talented performers were\nsaddled with a weak and very predictable script, featuring thinly-drawn\ncharacters and little that was memorable. Billy Bob Thornton, Robin Wright,\nJackie Earle Haley, Hopper Penn, Katelyn Nacon and Emma Booth headline the\nfilm.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

iMORDECAI \u2013 Based on a true story, this tale involves an\n80-year-old Holocaust survivor living in Miami. After being given a new iPhone,\nhe finds himself discovering the internet and social groups. After befriending\na young woman, he is encouraged to get out, take part in activities and repair\na strained relationship with his son. This movie split the press right down the\nmiddle. Half thought everything about the film was overplayed and commented\nthat it actually felt like a sit-com. Others thought that the sketches\npresented were dull and uneventful. The same number felt that while\nless-than-subtle, this was a sweet and subtle story about using new technology\nto meet new people and create tighter family bonds. For the time being, this is\na DVD-only release. It stars Judd Hirsch, Carol Kane, Sean Astin, Stephanie J.\nBlock, Azia Dinea Hale and Nick Puga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

INFINITY POOL \u2013 The latest chiller from Brandon Cronenberg\n(director of Possessor<\/em> and son of filmmaker David Cronenberg) is set at\nan isolated, all-inclusive resort. A wealthy couple are befriended by a woman\nwho convinces them to leave the property and venture off grounds. They discover\na site that indulges in hedonism, violence and untold horror. After a nasty\nincident, the couple are arrested for a crime and given two options \u2013 either\nface execution or pay to experience something that is even more disturbing.\nThis movie appears to have pushed buttons and gotten a largely positive\nresponse from reviewers. A few did comment that the movie was confusing,\nponderous and didn\u2019t appear to resolve the issues it addressed. Still, most\nwrote that it was gripping and unsettling, also calling the film a sharp and\ncutting commentary on the influence of the rich and their ability to avoid\nrepercussions. It features Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd, Mia Goth, Cleopatra Coleman and\nThomas Kretschmann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

LIVING \u2013 This remake of the 1952 Japanese Akira Kurosawa film Ikiru<\/em> is also set in the 50s era and tells the story of an aging, humorless bureaucrat who works for the city of London. His job seems to exist only to stop public requests from being processed and he is less than friendly to co-workers around him. When the lead receives a terminal diagnosis from his doctor, he is faced with a dilemma. He attempts to determine how to spend his final days and leave a mark on the world before he passes away. This feature earned raves and was nominated for two Academy Awards (one for Best Actor and a second for Best Adapted Screenplay). One or two preferred the original version and thought this effort was maudlin. However, everyone else stated that the movie was a quiet but powerful remake that benefitted from a wonderful lead performance. They also claimed that it was impossible not to be moved and heartbroken by the main character and story. Bill Nighy, Aimee Lou Wood and Alex Sharp headline the film. A LOT OF NOTHING \u2013 A happily married and successful couple\ndecide to relax in their homes one evening and watch the news. They see a\ntragedy play out during the broadcast and immediately recognize that their neighbor\nmay have been responsible. Stunned, the pair discuss what to do next. They are\nsurprised to find that they both have completely opposing viewpoints and how to\nproceed. This thriller divided reviewers almost down the middle. Almost half\nthought it was tense throughout and brought up important themes, while also\nnoting that life isn\u2019t always as clear-cut as it might initially appear. The\nsame number (and one or two more) believed that the movie was unfocused,\nstumbled around clumsily and didn\u2019t seem sure of even the point it was trying\nto make. It features Shamier Anderson, Cleopatra Coleman, Sheila Carrasco and\nJustin Hartley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

OINK! \u2013 Released in its homeland under the title Knor<\/em>,\nthis stop-motion animated feature from the Netherlands tells the story of a\nnine-year-old girl who wants a pet against the wishes of her parents. When her\ngrandfather from America arrives, he gives her a baby pig. The family resists,\nbut the youngster does everything she can to train the animal and have it\naccepted in the household. Things go surprisingly well, but after she learns\nthat her grandpa has a connection to a pig meat products firm, it becomes clear\nthat he may have nefarious motives for the gift. This picture won the award for\nBest Picture in its homeland and just missed out on being nominated for an\nAcademy Award. Reviews that have appeared have been uniformly positive. They\nall say that the film is beautifully animated, adorable, funny and will\ncertainly pull on the heartstrings. This is a DVD-only release at present. It\nseems as though it has been dubbed into English, but it isn\u2019t clear if the\noriginal language version (with English subtitles) is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

ONE FINE MORNING \u2013 In this romance, a young woman juggling a\nbusy career and raising an eight-year-old daughter while caring for her father,\nwho is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease. Overwhelmed, she encounters\nan old friend while searching for a nursing home. Despite him being married,\nthe two begin an affair and must deal with the complications that follow. \nThis foreign-language feature from French received plenty of praise from\ncritics. A handful of them didn\u2019t find that the situations presented to them\nseemed realistic and thought the story wasn\u2019t fully developed and even a bit\ndull. Regardless, all others raved about the lead performance and called the\nmovie a low-key but believable and humanistic look at real issues and problems\nthat many encounter in life. It stars L\u00e9a Seydoux, Pascal Greggory and Melvil\nPoupaud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SCARE PACKAGE II: RAD CHAD\u2019S REVENGE \u2013 This sequel to the\n2019 independent horror flick Scare Package<\/em> arrives from the streaming\nservice Shudder. It is set at the funeral of a horror guru. Shortly after the\nguests arrive to pay their respects, they find themselves being subjected to a\nseries of elaborate death traps based on the deceased favorite features. The\nattendees must use their movie knowledge to escape with their lives. Each\nsegment is directed by a different filmmaker and in the end, reaction was\npositive towards the feature. A small contingent did complain that the humor\nwas too juvenile and that much of the title felt borrowed from other and more\neffective efforts. Still, the majority wrote that it was an effective, clever\nand affectionate homage to horror films and believed that the various traps\nwould amuse viewers. It stars Zoe Graham, Jeremy King, Rich Sommer, Shakira\nJa\u2019nai Paye and Kelli Maroney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBOWL BOWL-O-RAMA 2 \u2013 Way back in\n1988, Full Moon pictures released Sorority Babes in the Slimebowl Bowl-O-Rama<\/em>,\nan effort about a group of sorority sisters tasked with stealing a trophy from\na bowling alley. They get more than they bargained for when they discover a\nsinister imp in the item. Some 35 years later, a sequel has arrived directed by\nBrinke Stevens, the star of the original film. The plot synopsis states that\nthe gremlin is back and the story follows the same sorority as it tries to\nrecruit new members. After a break-in at the same site, the imp is released\nonce and decides to attack the students. But one mysterious lady may hold the\nanswer to stopping the creature. The original B-movie is well-liked, but there\nare currently no reviews for this title, so interested parties will just have\nto take a chance on it. The cast includes Kelli Maroney, Michelle Bauer, Brinke\nStevens, Audrey Neal and Jessie Gill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

SWIM \u2013 It looks like the B-movie studio Asylum is back\nmaking original movies for the Tubi steaming service. This particular title was\nreleased in late 2021 and is now arriving as a DVD-only release. It\u2019s about\nmassive flooding on the California coast. A father attempts to reach his family\nwho are trapped in a house on the coast. They all find themselves being\nattacked by a shark that finds its way into the residence as it sinks\nunderwater. Word on the picture was pretty terrible, stating that the effects\nwere poor, the story was utterly ridiculous and that there wasn\u2019t much tension\nor excitement. They complained that while it delivered a few cheesy laughs, it\ngrew tiresome very quickly. It features Joey Lawrence, Jennifer Field, Andy\nLauer, Brett Hargrove, Daniel Grogan and Addison Bowman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

TURN EVERY PAGE – THE ADVENTURES OF ROBERT CARO AND ROBERT\nGOTTLIEB \u2013 Looking for a documentary? This well-received film tells the tale of\nthe incredible 50-year relationship between writer Robert Caro and his editor,\nRobert Gottlieb. At age 86, the writer works to complete the final volume of\nwhat he believes is his masterwork, and his 90-year-old friend insists on\nediting it. The feature details their collaborative relationship and how the\npair have helped each other succeed over half a century. Reviewers adored the\nfilm. One or two thought it lacked a big surprise and that the pair were so\nfriendly that it wasn\u2019t gripping. However, everyone else commented that the film\nintimately chronicled an incredible relationship and showed the remarkable\ninfluence and help that these two men provided for each other. This is a DVD-\nonly release for the time being. Ethan Hawke, Conan O\u2019Brien, David Remick and\nBill Clinton appear in the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

WOMAN OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS \u2013 A fearful and extremely shy\nphotographer encounters a beautiful woman suffering from body dysmorphia. The\nman sees an opportunity to help the model and begins a twisted romance with\nher. It soon seems as if he is taking advantage of her and may be treating the\nlady in a misogynistic manner, adding greater confusion and uncomfortableness\nto the relationship. This foreign-language title from Japan was released in its\nhomeland back in 2020 and is now arriving on disc. The press gave the film\nuniformly upbeat reviews. They all believed that the movie was a little\nconfounding, but compelling and noted that it interestingly dealt with issues\nlike social media and mental illness. The group stated that they had never seen\nanything like it before and said it would stay in the minds of viewers long\nafter the credits rolled. It stars Hideki Nagai, Itsuki Otaki and Toki Koinuma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If that wasn\u2019t enough, there are plenty of old titles to\nchoose from as well. 88 Films is releasing a Special Edition Blu-ray of the\nJackie Chan martial arts flick, Gorgeous <\/em>(1999). It\u2019s about a woman who\nfinds a romantic message in a bottle and travels from Taiwan to Hong Kong.\nAfter a series of misunderstandings, he encounters a wealthy man being targeted\nby a lifelong enemy who wants to break them apart. It has been described as an\naction movie with romantic comedy elements. The disc includes a 2K transfer of\nthe Hong Kong and International versions of the movie, two film historian commentaries,\nanother audio commentary with Jackie Chan, featurettes and a making-of, music\nvideos and plenty of trailers for the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want to make it a Jackie Chan double-feature, you can\nalso pick up Heart of Dragon<\/em> (1985) on Blu-ray from Arrow Video. This\nfilm features Chan and Sammo Hung as a SWAT officer who has to look after his\nmentally disabled brothers. Resentment begins to build between the pair, and\nwhen his sibling unknowingly gets himself involved in a major crime, the\nofficer has to decide whether or not to protect him. This is considered more of\na drama than a straight-forward action film, but it definitely features some\nmartial arts. The disc presents a 2K restoration of the Hong Kong theatrical\ncut and the extended Japanese edition, multiple language tracks, a movie expert\ncommentary, two lengthy featurettes promoting the Japanese release, an archive\ninterview with Chan and co-star Rocky Lai, as well as two discussions with star\nand director Sammo Hung. You can also watch a talk with the cinematographer,\nalternate English credits, as well as publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up, Down, Fragile<\/em> (1995) is a French drama arriving\nfrom Cohen Media Group on Blu-ray. It\u2019s a musical about three women at a\nturning point in their lives. It comes with a 4K picture restoration, a film\nprofessor commentary track and a re-release trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Criterion is delivering a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray edition of\nthe Academy Award-winning drama, The Fisher King<\/em> (1991) from Terry\nGilliam (Time Bandits, Brazil, 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/em>).\nThis excellent feature details a popular but suicidal \u201cshock jock\u201d who meets a\nhomeless man and former college professor searching for the Holy Grail. The\nmovie stars Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Amanda Plummer and Mercedes Ruehl\n(who won an Oscar). It arrives with a new restoration as well as all previously\nincluded extras like a director commentary, cast and crew interviews and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AmnesiA<\/em> (2001) is a Dutch feature that is being\nreleased on Blu-ray from Cult Epics. It\u2019s about a father who returns to visit\nhis seriously ill mother and must deal with various family issues in the\nprocess. This is a two-disc set that features a 4K remaster of the movie, an\nintroduction and audio commentary from the director, a 44-minute conversation\nwith the filmmaker and a making-of, behind-the-scenes featurette and trailer,\nas well as a second disc of TV-features from the director.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film Movement is presenting a double-feature of The Naked\nFog<\/em> (1966) and Moonlighting Wives<\/em> (1966). These are independent\nmovies from director Joseph W. Sarno and the first is about a female writer\ntrying to navigate the swinging sixties. The second is a lost film involving a\nhousewife who starts a prostitution ring. The movies have been remastered and\nfeature movie historian commentaries, an interview with the director and\nanother with the cinematographer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino Lorber has plenty of discs to choose from as well. This\nincludes the Steve McQueen WWII feature Hell Is for Heroes<\/em> (1962). The\nBlu-ray includes a 4K restoration of the film, a historian commentary, a\ntrailer and a limited slipcard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Man on the Train<\/em> (2002) is a French title about a\npoetry teacher and a criminal two men who become friendly after meeting on a\ntrain during their travels. The Blu-ray features Jean Rochefort and Johnny\nHallyday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tyrone Power stars in the romance The Mississippi Gambler<\/em>\n(1953) and the Blu-ray comes with a 2K remaster, a film historian track and a\ntrailer. Moment to Moment<\/em> (1966) is a neo-noir thriller with Jean\nSeaberg and Honor Blackman about some globetrotting romance and a murder. This\nfilm has been given a 2K restoration for Blu-ray, a critic commentary, a\nfeaturette on composer Henry Mancini and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Set during the Mexican incursion of 1951, They Came to\nCordura<\/em> (1959) is about an army major accused of cowardice recommending his\nsoldiers for a medal of honor. This Blu-ray features Gary Cooper and Rita\nHayworth and arrives with a film expert introduction and a trailer.  The\nTruth About Spring<\/em> (1965) is a sailing story about a child searching for\nburied treasure. It comes with a film historian commentary and trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

It really doesn\u2019t seem like that long ago, but it has been\nsome 20 years since musician Rob Zombie released his debut horror feature, House\nof 1000 Corpses<\/em> (2003). The story follows a group of young travelers who\nend up off the beaten path and get targeted by a psychotic family and a\nroadside attraction owner. Lionsgate is now delivering an anniversary edition\nBlu-ray in a two-disc set that comes with an illustrated outer box, a poster, a\n10-page photo book, illustrated art cards. The first disc has all previously\nreleased extras including a director commentary, which the second contains a new\nbonus disc of never-before-seen bonuses from Rob Zombie, including cast and\ncrew interviews, behind-the scenes footage, 5 on-set segments, screen tests,\nelectronic press kits and more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metro-Goldwyn Mayer is releasing Terror in a Texas Town<\/em>\n(1958) on Blu-ray. Sterling Hayden plays a Swedish man who arrives in the US to\nseek revenge on the greedy oil man who murdered his father. This title was\npreviously released by Arrow Academy but has since gone out of print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Action Movie Night: 4-Film Collection<\/em> is arriving on\nBlu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment. It contains Conspiracy<\/em> (2008)\nwith Val Kilmer, The Contractor<\/em> (2007) featuring Wesley Snipes (2007), The\nHard Cops<\/em> (2006) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, as well as Vertical\nLimit<\/em> (2000) with Scott Glenn, Chris O\u2019Donnell and Chris O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paramount is giving the 80s hit Flashdance<\/em> (1983) the\n4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray treatment in multiple editions, including a Steelbook.\nThis tale of a woman striving to make her mark in the dance world is\ncelebrating its 40th<\/sup> anniversary. The disc features a 4K restoration\nsupervised by director Adrian Lyne (Fatal Attraction, Jacob\u2019s Ladder,\nIndecent Proposal<\/em>), a filmmaker focus on the director, a look at Flashdance<\/em>,\na study of the phenomenon and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studio is also rereleasing some titles on Blu-ray. You\ncan pick up G.I. Joe: Retaliation<\/em> (2013), A Quiet Place<\/em> (2018), Sonic\nthe Hedgehog<\/em> (2020), The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie<\/em> (2004) and True\nGrit<\/em> (2010).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shout! Factory is delivering the Kim Basinger thriller Bless\nthe Child<\/em> (2000) on Blu-ray. The story involves a girl with supernatural\nabilities and the attempts made by a nurse to protect her from sinister forces\nthat want to harness her power. It includes a director and visual effects\nsupervisor commentary, a look inside the cast and crew and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are also putting out a Blu-ray of the comedy, Flashback<\/em>\n(1990). It stars Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland as a 60s radical who is\narrested by a young and uptight Federal agent and escorted cross country. It\ndoesn\u2019t look like this disc comes with any extras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Umbrella is an Australian Blu-ray outlet, but it looks like they\u2019re starting to release more titles worldwide. This week, you can pick up a double feature of Young Guns<\/em> (1988) and Young Guns II<\/em> (1990) on Blu-ray starring Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips and many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the Box of Burt: The Man, The Myth, The Mustache<\/em>\nbox set is arriving from the distributor. It contains The Cannonball Run<\/em>\n(1981), The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas<\/em> (1982), Stroker Ace<\/em>\n(1983), The Man Who Loved Women<\/em> (1983) and Cannonball Run 2<\/em>\n(1984). I don\u2019t believe that a couple of those titles have ever been released\nbefore on Blu-ray in this part of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Unearthed Films is delivering a Blu-ray of the Hong Kong\/Taiwan feature, Calamity of Snakes<\/em> (1982). It\u2019s about a new apartment building in Hong Kong that is built right on a cursed site and the home of millions of snakes. The reptiles get angry and the residents have to fight back to survive. This Blu-ray features a film expert commentary, a full-length documentary on the movie, a discussion with the reptiles used, an alternate cut and a cruelty-free version (it seems that numerous were hurt in the making of the movie).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, a pair of great DVD sets containing plenty of family\nentertainment from Warner Bros. Entertainment.
