This feature from Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios\nopens exclusively at theaters on May 5th, 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 2014, few would have predicted that one of Marvel\nStudios\u2019 most successful comic book adaptations would involve a band of\nlittle-known, oddball heroes. However, that\u2019s exactly what happened with Guardians\nof the Galaxy<\/em>, which was one of the highest grossing and best reviewed\nMarvel chapters during its release. The characters were unique and engaging and\nthe interplay between them was hilarious, with much credit going to\ndirector\/co-writer James Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em> is the\nlatest and presumably final chapter in the series. As such, the tone is\nbittersweet and more somber than in previous entries. But despite the heavier\nelements, the likable cast, amusing banter and heartfelt farewell does\neventually save the day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been six years since the last official sequel, but\nthe events of Avengers: Infinity War<\/em> and Avengers: Endgame<\/em> have\nleft a mark on the leads. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a mess, pining over the\nloss of team member and significant other, Gamora (Zoe Salda\u00f1a). For those\nneeding a refresher, she died and was later resurrected with no memory of\nQuill, leaving the group for the Ravagers crime syndicate. Things become even\ngrimmer for Quill, Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Mantis (Pom\nKlementieff), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel)\nand Kraglin (Sean Gunn) when the powerful Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) barges\nin. This force of nature brutally attempts to take a specific team member to a\nfigure known as The High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji). With this Guardian\u2019s\nlife hanging in the balance, the heroes must travel to bizarre and strange\nworlds in order to save their friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story seems focused primarily on Quill and Rocket.\nSpecifically, the lingering effects of past personal traumas that neither can\nbring themselves to talk about or deal with. The theme certainly doesn\u2019t sound\nlike a breezy ride and the tone is admittedly grimmer. The slow reveal of\nRocket\u2019s backstory is sad and painful, while Quill spends a lot of time in vain\ntrying to get the antagonistic Gamora to remember him. But while the Rocket\nsubplot doesn\u2019t deliver laughs, it works on an emotional level and makes the\ncharacter even more endearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And more and more verbal gags do land as the story\nprogresses. Quill\u2019s sad pestering of Gamora includes some funny exchanges as he\nattempts to impress her and show others that he can be charming. There\u2019s a very\nentertaining subplot involving Kraglin and Cosmo the Spacedog (voiced by Maria\nBakalova) that pays off nicely at the close of the film. Even adversary Warlock\nearns some smiles when his failings and child-like intelligence level is\nrevealed. The back-and-forth bickering between all the characters is\nentertaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the main villain, the stakes are certainly raised\nwith the presence of villain The High Evolutionary. The scientist is determined\nto create the perfect species and wipe out any of his experiments that don\u2019t\nmeet his standards. He\u2019s a powerful force, but unfortunately the character is\nasked to chew a lot of scenery. This foe could have been even more frightening\nhad he exuded a quiet menace rather than indulge in constant screaming\nepisodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for the action, it\u2019s epic and impressive to witness.\nThere are a couple of creatively shot fights, including one dizzying master\nshot that follows the leads down a lengthy corridor as they square off against\na mass of enemies. Each character gets their moment as the camera moves and\njumps from character to character in the heat of battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, the final product isn\u2019t perfect and some may be put off\nby the darker tone, but this is a finale that has to address the underlying\nissues of its protagonists. Thanks to the writing and cast, most of the\ndramatic elements resonate and leave an impression. Guardians of the Galaxy\nVol. 3<\/em> and its distinctive characters have a big, beating heart and soul,\nwhich elevates the feature over many of its contemporaries and make it one of\nthe stronger recent entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
