Once again, it\u2019s an interesting edition\nwith plenty of intriguing titles in a wide variety of genres. So, if you can\u2019t\nmake it out to the movies this week or need to stay indoors, be sure to give\none of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Children-of-the-Corn-remake-2023-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26445\" width=\"299\" height=\"171\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CHILDREN OF THE CORN \u2013 Based on the Stephen King short story\n(which was previously adapted into a film in 1984 that spawned several\nsequels), this new update was filmed back in 2020 during the pandemic. After\nsitting on the shelf for a while, it received a limited theatrical run a couple\nof months ago. The story involves a group of children in a small village who\nbecome possessed by a sinister spirit in a cornfield. They rise up against\ntheir parents and violently murder their guardians and any adult who arrives in\ntown. One high school student finds the bloody rampage horrifying and decides\nto try and stop it. Response towards this feature was poor overall. A small\nnumber wrote that the movie was disturbing, had some interesting ideas and was\nan improvement over the 1984 original. Unfortunately, the vast majority\ncomplained that it was predictable and didn\u2019t offer anything new to the\noriginal story. Some even commented that the final product was silly rather\nthan scary. The movie stars Elena Kampouris, Kate Moyer, Callan Mulvey and\nBruce Spence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Daughter-table-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26446\" width=\"314\" height=\"189\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DAUGHTER \u2013 In this independent horror feature, a young woman\nis kidnapped and taken to the home of a sociopathic family in the middle of\nnowhere. She learns that she has been selected to be the new surrogate daughter\nof the parents. The protagonist attempts to befriend everyone long enough to\nget their guard down so that she can escape, but discovers even more disturbing\ndetails about the household and their plans for her. Genre movie critics were\nvery impressed with the results. A tiny contingent felt that the film was\nderivative and borrowed heavily from other creepy classics. However, everyone\nelse wrote that while depressing, this tale was dynamically paced, as well as\nmoody and well-acted, also serving as an interesting study of authoritarianism.\nThe cast includes Casper Van Dien, Elyse Dihn, Vivien Ng\u00f4, Ian Alexander and\nMegan Le.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Heaven-Sent-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26447\" width=\"301\" height=\"174\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HEAVEN SENT \u2013 In this faith-based romantic comedy, a woman\ngives up on love after some bad personal experiences and focuses all her attention\non her grandson and her small business. She is eventually convinced by a friend\nto attend a speed dating event and meets a widowed pastor who has been dealing\nwith the loss by devoting himself to his quirky congregation. The two\nunexpectedly hit it off and begin seeing each other. This movie has been\navailable on streaming sites since February and is now being released\nexclusively on the DVD format. There aren\u2019t many reviews available for the\nfeature and those that have appeared online are from reviewers who specialize\nin promoting faith-based entertainment. These individuals have stated that the\nmovie is well-meaning and presents authentic characters dealing with personal\nissues. It features Karen Abercrombie, Leon Pridgen, Jemarcus Kilgore and Charlene\nTilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-House-Made-of-Splinters-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26448\" width=\"291\" height=\"165\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS \u2013 This documentary was filmed in\nUkraine on the Russian border and follows the work done by employees at an\ninstitution that takes in children who have been removed from their homes while\nawaiting custody claims to be processed. The crew captures the staff attempting\nto help the youngsters feel safe. It also details the thoughts and concerns of\nthe kids, who not only have to deal with personal losses but a war raging all\naround them. The film earned rave reviews and was nominated for Best\nDocumentary Feature at the Academy Awards earlier in the year. One reviewer\nfound the movie too painful to endure given that it doesn\u2019t provide any sense\nof closure to the trials being endured by the youngsters. Everyone else wrote\nthat it was powerful, raw and wrenching, but also hopeful as the children\nfeatured try to keep moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Knock-at-the-Cabin-02-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26449\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KNOCK AT THE CABIN \u2013 The latest from writer\/director M.\nNight Shyamalan (<em>The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, The\nVisit, Split, Old<\/em>) involves a young girl vacationing with her parents at a\nremote cabin in the woods. All of a sudden, they are taken hostage by a group\nof armed strangers. The leader demands those being held make a shocking\ndecision which the captors believe will avert an impending apocalypse. The\nparents attempt to figure out if what is being relayed is the truth and how to\nrespond. This picture earned a wide variety of responses from the press, but\nthe majority recommended it. About one-third stated that after a dynamic opening,\nthe movie became sidetracked with subplots and couldn\u2019t deliver on its early\npromise. However, the consensus was that the movie was incredibly tense and\ncompelling from beginning to end. They also praised the cast and thought their\nperformances were excellent. It stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben\nAldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn and Rupert Grint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Unicorn-Wars-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26450\" width=\"327\" height=\"172\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNICORN WARS \u2013 Ever wanted to see a bloody conflict between\nteddy bears and unicorns? This foreign-language animated Spanish film depicts\njust that, as told from the perspective of two brother bears training at a\nbootcamp. One is an aggressive fighter, the other a sensitive and withdrawn\nfigure. Despite their differences, the two animals try to support each other\nand survive basic training before being put on a brutal combat tour by their\nsuperiors. The film won many awards in its homeland including Best Animated\nFilm and is finding a cult following in North America. The press in this part\nof the world has been more positive than negative. Those who disliked the\npicture wrote that it was trying too hard to shock viewers and that the end\nresults didn\u2019t resonate emotionally. Still, most found it visually impressive\nand were taken aback by the distressing things being depicted through bright and\ncuddly bears. They called it an impressive antiwar statement that wouldn\u2019t be\neasily forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Unwelcome-Ireland-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26451\" width=\"298\" height=\"186\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNWELCOME \u2013 A young couple inherit a large estate in the\nIrish countryside and are thrilled to move out there. It all seems lovely until\na local reminds them to leave out a meaty food offering nightly for Redcaps\nliving on the property. For those not up on their Irish\/Scottish folklore,\nRedcaps are goblins named for their vibrant headwear soaked in the blood of\ntheir enemies. Naturally, the two forget one night and find themselves under\nattack by these brutal and unforgiving creatures. Overall, critics were amused\nby this Irish feature, which was co-written and directed by the figure who also\nmade <em>Grabbers<\/em>, a well-received 2012 horror\/comedy. A percentage of them\ndid call the story predictable and complained that the movie was drained of\nchills by showing the villainous creatures too frequently. Regardless,\ntwo-thirds called it an entertaining genre picture with a ton of scares and\nlaughs in equal measure. Hannah John-Kamen, Douglas Booth, Colm Meaney and\nJamie-Lee O\u2019Donnell headline the film.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Branded-to-Kill-1967-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26452\" width=\"259\" height=\"359\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re looking for something older, there are plenty of\nfeature options as well. Arrow Video is releasing <em>Hand of Death<\/em> (1976)\naka <em>Countdown in Kung Fu<\/em> on Blu-ray. This period martial arts feature\nfrom Hong Kong marks the first effort from famed action director John Woo <em>(The\nKiller, Hard Boiled, Hard Target, Face\/Off<\/em>) as well as early screen\nappearances from Sammo Hung and Jackie Chan. The disc includes a 2K picture\nrestoration from the original film elements, a martial arts expert commentary\ntrack, an archival featurette on Woo\u2019s early career, a never-before-seen\ndiscussion with star Tan Tao-Liang, an archival interview with Sammo Hung, an\nalternate credits sequence, publicity materials, as well as a poster with\noriginal and newly commissioned art for the movie.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criterion is giving the classic Japanese title <em>Branded to Kill<\/em> (1967) a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray presentation. Pictured to the right, this stylish and entertaining gangster flick involves a Yakuza assassin who messes up an assignment and ends up with a price on his own head. Extras include a recent interview with the director and assistant director, a new discussion with the star, a talk with the director from 1997, a trailer and a booklet with a lengthy essay on the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dark Force is presenting a double-feature Blu-ray of <em>Whose\nChild Am I?<\/em> (1976) and <em>Weekend Murders<\/em> (1976). The first tells the\nstory of a couple who want a baby and experience terror after the artificial\ninsemination process. The second film involves members of a British family\nbeing picked off while attending the reading of a will. The latter picture\narrives with an interview and commentary track with the star and the disc also\nincludes trailers and upgraded picture quality on the titles.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Experts-1989-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26454\" width=\"298\" height=\"170\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kino is also presenting several Blu-rays. <em>The Experts<\/em>\n(1989) is a comedy starring John Travolta and Arye Gross about two pals who are\nkidnapped by the KGB and forced to train Russian spies how to be hip like\nAmericans. The disc contains a 4K image restoration from the original camera\nnegatives. It also arrives with an interview with director Dave Thomas (perhaps\nbest known as Doug McKenzie from <em>SCTV<\/em>) and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Kamikaze<\/em> (1986) is a slick French thriller co-written\nand produced by Luc Besson (<em>La Femme Nikita, Leon: The Professional, The\nFifth Element<\/em>) about a mad scientist who invents a device that uses\ntelevision airwaves to kill irritating TV-show hosts. It comes with a film\ncritic commentary, an interview with the director, a documentary on the\nproduction and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Stone-Cold-jump-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26455\" width=\"287\" height=\"173\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Stone Cold<\/em> (1991) is one of those really guilty pleasures \u2013 a B-movie that isn&#8217;t good, but is so over-the-top that it manages to be entertaining in a surreal way. The flick stars ex-NFL player Brian Bosworth as an undercover DEA agent who sets out to eliminate a drug-dealing biker gang that are also plotting to raid the State Capitol. This Blu-ray presents a 2K restoration, plus new interviews with Bosworth, co-stars Lance Henriksen, Arabella Holzbog and Sam McMurray. It also arrives with an action film historian commentary track and a pair of trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a completely different note, the distributor is also\nputting out the French drama <em>There\u2019s No Tomorrow<\/em> (1939). This one\nfollows a woman who falls on hard times but tries to put on a fancy charade\nafter reuniting with a lost love. The Blu-ray includes a film expert commentary\nand a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Mahakaal-movie-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26456\" width=\"279\" height=\"175\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Massacre Video is presenting <em>Mahakaal<\/em> (1994) on\nBlu-ray. It\u2019s essentially a Bollywood rip-off of <em>A Nightmare on Elm Street\nthat<\/em> features plenty of creepy dream sequences mixed with elaborate musical\nnumbers. This unusual title does have a following among genre fans and is being\npresented uncut and newly scanned in 2K resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this distributor is also putting out a Blu-ray of the\nlow-budget chiller <em>Toxic Zombies<\/em> (1980). Basically, toxic chemicals are\ndumped into the backwoods and slowly turn both pot-farming hippies and the\nfederal agents out to stop them into flesh-eating zombies. This release marks\nthe high-definition debut of the film, which has been scanned in 4K for the\nrelease. It comes with cast and crew interviews as well as promotional\nmaterials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Sorrow and the Pity<\/em> (1969) is a French\ndocumentary detailing the Nazi occupation of Paris that earned acclaim as well\nas an Oscar nomination upon its release. Critic Roger Ebert even called it one\nof the best documentaries ever made. The Milestone Cinematheque is now\npresenting the feature on Blu-ray with a 2K restoration, a 40-minute piece on\nthe director and a re-release trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who enjoy stand-up comedy, Mill Creek\nEntertainment is making <em>Maria Bamford \u2013 Stand-up Spotlight <\/em>available on\nDVD. It contains two entertaining specials featuring the popular comic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Absolute-Beginners-Vespa-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26457\" width=\"283\" height=\"255\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a month or two ago, the recent <em>All Quiet on the\nWestern Front<\/em> (2022) remake was released to the public as a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray set. For those who only want a Blu-ray of the film, you can now pick up\na single-disc version from distributor MPI Media Group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sandpiper Pictures is presenting the out-of-print UK musical\n<em>Absolute Beginners<\/em> (1986) on Blu-ray. This is a period feature about a\nSoho photographer fighting to win his girlfriend back after she becomes famous\nand falls in with the wrong crowd. The movie features some catchy tunes and\nstars Eddie O\u2019Connell, Patsy Kensit, David Bowie and Ray Davies (from the band <em>The\nKinks<\/em>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the distributor is releasing the Judy Garland\ndrama, <em>I Could Go on Singing<\/em> (1963). Garland plays an American performer\nin London who tries to reclaim the child she gave up for adoption. Both of the\ntitles featured above are bare bones with no disc bonuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cinemastance.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/DVD-Tiger-Cage-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26458\" width=\"319\" height=\"179\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shout! Factory is delivering <em>The Tiger Cage Collection<\/em>\nbox set on Blu-ray. It contains the Hong Kong martial arts titles <em>Tiger Cage<\/em>\n(1988), <em>Tiger Cage II<\/em> (1990) and <em>Tiger Cage III<\/em> (1991). The\nwell-regarded original follows a team of cops who discover that some of their\nmembers are part of an American crime syndicate trafficking drugs. The package\nincludes 2K restorations of all of the films, movie expert commentary tracks,\ntwo cuts of the first two titles, cast and crew interviews and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, Warner Bros. is making the <em>Superman I-IV 5-Film\nCollection<\/em> set available. It features 4K Ultra HD discs and Blu-rays of all\nfour movies in which Christopher Reeve played the title character. As you might\nhave guessed given the name of the set, it includes both the Richard Lester and\nRichard Donner versions of the second film in the series.
