This feature from Paramount Pictures opens at cinemas\neverywhere on Wednesday, July 12th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the first Mission: impossible<\/em> feature opened\nback in 1996, it made quite a sensation thanks to a surprisingly twisty plot\nand some dazzling visual panache. Despite its box office success, few would\nhave guessed that the movie would have spawned a massive franchise with six\nsequels and another that will arrive next year. The follow-ups have always been\nfun movies, although as time has passed the stunts seem to have taken over the\nstoryline. In fact, some of them are best remembered by what star Tom Cruise\nhappens to be hanging from during the most elaborate action set piece (a plane,\na cliff, the Burj Khalifa). Mission: Impossible \u2013 Dead Reckoning Part One<\/em>\nis the latest chapter. This movie attempts to stand out from the pack by\npresenting the leads with their biggest threat yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As it turns out, the menace is an artificial intelligence\nprogram known as the Entity that has become sentient. It has infiltrated just\nabout every piece of modern technology, can sabotage any digital system\nanywhere and predict the actions of its enemies. However, some believe the AI\nmight be controlled by finding two separate halves of a special key that\nunlocks an early version of the program. Hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is tasked\nwith finding the two key pieces, but quickly realizes that the best course of\naction may be to stop the AI and prevent anyone from possessing its power.\nCalling on help from agents Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), Benji Dunn (Simon\nPegg) and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), the gang race to complete the task. To\ndo so, they must contend with thief Grace (Hayley Atwell), black-market arms\ndealer Alanna Mitsopolis (Vanessa Kirby), and a sinister figure from Hunt\u2019s\npast known as Gabriel (Esai Morales) and his henchperson Paris (Pom\nKlementieff).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a lot of exposition in the film about the Entity,\nhow dangerous it is and what it can do, as well as political maneuvering\nbetween numerous government figures who want to use the AI to ultimately\ncontrol the world (despite the rogue program appearing sentient and rebellious\ntowards humanity). It\u2019s all played very straight, yet some of the intrigue and\ndealmaking between these officials and criminals does come across as silly.\nStill, this is a popcorn summer action film and the Entity does make for both\nan unusual and dangerous foe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, there\u2019s so much action and globe-trotting that\none doesn\u2019t have the opportunity to think about the details for too long. Scene\nafter scene unfolds with Hunt in pursuit of the key and enemies hot on his\ntrail, all as the Entity itself attempts to spoil the plans of anyone seeking\nto stop it. The movie is rapidly paced and there are big stakes during most\nconfrontations. Multiple figures and parties are involved in every action\nscene, adding plenty of zip and excitement to the proceedings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an impressive sequence early on involving Hunt\nattempting to locate the key at the Abu Dhabi International Airport. Most\naction films would only include a couple of major characters. Here, the\nsequence not only details the lead crossing paths with the villainous Gabriel,\nbut also dealing with pickpocket Grace, government officials, as well as an\natomic bomb set by the Entity that could detonate at any moment. Despite all of\nthe complications, everything is clearly presented so that the involvement of\nvarious threats result in an elaborate and dynamic sequence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That continues for much of the film, with another great\nchase in Rome that includes some welcome touches of humor, all the way to the\nfinale (which, yes, does involve characters hanging for dear life off of yet\nanother mode of transportation). The movie also tries to interject a few\nmoments of reflection, as many of the heroes understand the seriousness of the\nsituation and may have to give up their lives for the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be some sleight of hand to cover up some of the\nplot\u2019s more convoluted and outrageous elements, but it never hampers the sense\nof adventure or exhilaration. Everyone involved is clearly giving it their best\nand the action sequences are more impressively executed than anything else that\nhas appeared this season on the big screen. As summer blockbusters go, Mission:\nImpossible \u2013 Dead Reckoning Part One<\/em> delivers the goods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
