This feature from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon\nopens in cinemas on September 9th<\/sup>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone who is a parent with young kids is assuredly aware of\nthe PAW Patrol<\/em> animated series. It seems to appeal to just about every\nlittle one out there, serving as a ratings juggernaut since its 2013 debut.\nAfter ten seasons and a hit 2021 feature film, the characters are back on the\nbig screen once again. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie<\/em> feels like an\nattempt to update the show (or at the very least create a spin-off series) by\nadding superhero elements into its story. The picture is very formulaic, but it\nwill deliver the heroic pooch goods for its target demographic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those unfamiliar with the franchise, the story involves\na group of almost-all canine characters who do their best to protect the\ncitizens of Adventure City. They include group leader and young boy Ryder (Finn\nLee-Epp), police dog Chase (Christian Convery), fire dog Marshall (Christian\nCorrao), aviator canine Skye (Mckenna Grace), recycler pooch Rocky (Callum\nShoniker), aquatic rescue pup Zuma (Nylan Parthipan), construction dog Rubble\n(Luxton Handspiker) and newest canine team member Liberty (Marsai Martin). When\nthe villainous Victoria Vance (Taraji P. Henson) attempts to cause a meteorite\ncrash and harness the falling rock\u2019s remarkable powers, things don\u2019t go as\nplanned. The PAW Patrol end up recovering the space stone crystals, which\namplify their individual strengths. Now superheroes, they are even stronger,\nbut that all changes when Vance teams with Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo) to steal\ntheir powers, leaving the dogs at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a slicker-looking show in comparison to the television\nseries. The widescreen framing adds a bit of oomph to the proceedings and the\nbigger production allows for some grander set pieces, including the meteor\ncrash and scenes of animals flying, or blasting fire and water into the air.\nAnd the message is sweet, even if it is overstated and bluntly delivered. The\nstory focuses on Skye, who hasn\u2019t grown as large as the other dogs and feels\nunderappreciated. Despite moments of insecurity and worry for Skye, leader\nRyder constantly reminds her and the other dogs that they are valued for their\npersonal strength, uniqueness and ability to work as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The power-crystal concept is an interesting one and the\nscreenwriters manage to eke out a fun moment or two whenever their special\npowers are transferred. When Liberty discovers her skill set, it results in an\namusing rescue. Mayor Humdinger gets an entertaining moment rampaging down the\nstreets of Adventure City. And there is one very funny joke featuring a cat\nthat very briefly ends up in possession of a special stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, other than a quick line or two and one scene\ninvolving a villain, the screenplay doesn\u2019t maximize the idea\u2019s potential.\nThere could have been a lot of wild situations and humor derived from the\ncrystals jumping into the possession of various individuals (and showing how\neven a random passerby might be hiding something remarkable). But it\u2019s obvious\nwhat almost every dog\u2019s skill set is, so there aren\u2019t any surprises or suspense\nrelated to their newfound abilities. The group all end up in superhero costumes\ndoing, well, exactly what you would expect. As a result, the plot doesn\u2019t come\nacross as memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie<\/em> is competent and\nwell-intentioned, but has been crafted exclusively for smaller children and\noffers very little for older viewers. It also leads one to believe that we\u2019ll\nnow be seeing these rescue dogs continuing to fly in the sky and perform\nincredible tasks during their next season. While this reviewer is personally\ninclined to give the picture a C, the target viewership would likely rate it a B\nor higher. In this case, splitting the difference on a final rating seems\nappropriate.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTE: A brief short called Dora and the Fantastical\nCreatures<\/em> appears in front of the feature. It isn\u2019t very strong and is\nessentially an advertisement for an upcoming Nickelodeon series starring the\ncharacter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
