The lead is tormented by a mysterious figure who claims that she\nghosted him at some point in the past. Thankfully, she eventually gets engaged\nto another man and the threats stop. But when her fianc\u00e9 passes away\nunexpectedly, the creep returns. Fearful that her life is at stake, she\nattempts to identify the horrible stalker before he gets too close. There\nhaven\u2019t been many reviews for this independent feature. A couple of online notices\nhave appeared, but they haven\u2019t been upbeat. One stated that the movie was a\nroutine and dull effort that borrowed from other, stronger titles and failed to\nmake an impression. Another called out the film as melodramatic and the finale\npreposterous. It stars Roxanne McKee, Richard Fleeshman and Tina Casciani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nDEEP FEAR \u2013 If you\u2019re looking for more shark-related action\nin the vein of The Meg<\/em>, you can try this independent effort. It follows\nan accomplished yachtswoman who takes a solo voyage to meet up with her\nboyfriend in Grenada. After a terrible storm takes her off course, she\nencounters a sinking vessel near an uninhabited island. It turns out that the\nstranded crew are actually drug dealers, who force her to their cocaine at the\nbottom of a nearby reef. As if that wasn\u2019t bad enough, the group soon find\nthemselves under attack by a group of great white sharks. Reviews for this\nfeature are middling. Most state that the story is by-the-numbers and that the\nkiller fish are really only a subplot to the hostage situation. They do note,\nhowever, that if you appreciate B-movies, it\u2019s reasonably well put together and\nthe digital shark effects are good. The cast includes M\u00e3d\u00e3lina Ghenea, Ed\nWestwick and Macarena G\u00f3mez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n GRAN TURISMO \u2013 The popular Playstation video game gets a\nfilm adaptation in this tale, which is actually based upon a true story. After\nthe initial success of this racing simulator, the programmers made a deal with\nthe Nissan racing team to recruit a driver among their gamers. The protagonist,\nyoung Jann Mardenborough, goes through an intensive program as he strives to\nbecome a professional driver. The press was more positive than negative about\nthe final product. About one-third thought that there were too many elements\nand that the fairly conventional story should have focused more on the lead\ncharacter and his personal journey. Still, the majority called the movie a\nwell-paced and fun underdog story with excellent racing scenes that would\nplease fans of the game. Archie Madekwe, David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Darren\nBarney, Geri Halliwell and Djimon Hounsou headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n IT LIVES INSIDE \u2013 This tale involves two Indian-American\nteenagers who have been friends since childhood. When one of the ladies begins\nbehaving strangely and starts carrying around a mason jar, the protagonist asks\nwhat is happening. She is told that a demonic force resides inside the\ncontainer. The lead has a hard time buying into the idea, but after the jar\nbreaks and she becomes tormented by an evil presence, the claims feel\nauthentic. This chiller was well-received at horror film festivals and earned slightly\nmore upbeat notices than pans. A fair number did complain that it started well\nbut lost focus and tension, and once the monster was revealed it all fell\napart. Regardless, the majority thought that it was unique and tension-filled.\nThey also wrote that it did a solid job of dealing with themes of being an\nimmigrant and outsider. It features Megan Suri, Neenu Bajwa, Mohana Krishman\nand Betty Gabriel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE JESTER \u2013 Two estranged sisters find themselves being\npursued by the title killer in this independent horror film. On Halloween, the\npair and, well, an entire town are targeted and slowly eliminated. In order to\nsurvive the ordeal, they must look into the history of this figure and right\nthe wrongs originally committed against the maniac. The picture hasn\u2019t been\nseen by many yet and notices from genre critics that have appeared aren\u2019t\nexceptionally upbeat. A lone voice suggested that the narrative was choppy but\nthat it contained some impressive photography. All others commented that the\nstory wasn\u2019t fully developed and didn\u2019t provide enough material for a feature\nnarrative or a compelling message. The cast includes Michael Sheffield, Lelia\nSymington, Delaney White and Ken Arnold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n LION-GIRL \u2013 This English-language, independent\nscience-fiction feature from Japan is based on a Japanese manga. After a\nmeteorite falls to the Earth, much of humanity is wiped out by massive\nflooding. The survivors head to the only city left, Tokyo, where they must\ncontend with a new problem. Apparently, the space rock contains a chemical that\ninfects and transforms some people into horned beasts who kill humans for their\nlife-force energy. A lone warrior stands against the threat and battles evil\nforces. Very few critics have seen this picture. One who did and was positive.\nThe individual stated that it was wild, silly and entertainingly over-the-top,\nadding it would appeal to those who appreciate oddball efforts from abroad. It\nstars Tori Griffith, Derek Mears, Julie Burrise, Stefanie Estes, Shelby Lee\nParks, and David Sakurai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n LOCK AND LOAD \u2013 An undercover operative goes missing after\ninfiltrating an arms dealer who is making a shady deal with a terrorist group.\nThe best pals of the agent, who work as private security personnel, decide to\nfind out what occurred. They use their fighting skills to take down all enemies\nand beat their way to the main villain. Based on the accents in the trailer,\nthis independent action flick is set in and was made in Scotland. Apparently,\nthis is a sequel to a 2021 film called Holiday Monday<\/em> (reviewers say it\ndoesn\u2019t matter if you haven\u2019t seen it). So far, online reviews have all been\nupbeat. They note that while the budget is small, the leads possess a lot of\nonscreen charm. Also, they called the action zippier than most Hollywood\nefforts and thought it was incredibly fun to watch. Nathan Shepka, Colin\nMacDougall, Graeme MacPherson, Tony Macdonald and Stephen Kerr headline the\ntitle. For the time being, this is a DVD-only release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE MIRACLE CLUB \u2013 Set in 1967, this comedy\/drama is set in\nDublin, Ireland and follows three close friends from different generations who\nall share the same dream\u2026 to visit the French town of Lourdes. They note that\nthe town is famous for being named by the Catholic Church as a holy city and a\nplace of miracles. The ladies win the opportunity to visit, but their plans run\ninto trouble after the arrival of an old friend and skeptic, who has just\nreturned from the US for her mother\u2019s funeral. Response to the UK effort was\ngenerally positive. About one-third of reviewers suggested that the screenplay\nwas overly sentimental and inauthentic, with most of the attempts at humor\nfalling flat. Still, most thought that the cast was charming and that the\nconversations between characters and their attempts to reconcile issues were\neffectively rendered. It stars Laura Linney, Kathy Bates, Maggie Smith, Agnes\nO\u2019Casey and Mark O\u2019Halloran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n SCRAPPER \u2013 If you\u2019re looking for more entertainment from\nacross the Atlantic, this comedy\/drama is about a 12-year-old orphan who uses\nher wits to convince social workers that she is living with her uncle. In\nreality, the youngster is living alone in a London flat and stealing bikes with\nher best friend in order to make ends meet. Her estranged father suddenly\nappears to take custody and the two butt heads as they try to live together and\nfind common ground. This picture won a Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film\nFestival and was praised by the press. A tiny number couldn\u2019t relate to the\ncharacters and commented that the quirky sense of humor didn\u2019t work for them.\nEveryone else adored the cast, saying the two leads were wonderful together\nonscreen and praised the movie as unusual, eccentric and loveable. Lola\nCampbell, Harris Dickinson, Alin Uzum and Ambreen Razia headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n WARHORSE ONE \u2013 This action picture is set in 2021 during the\nwithdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan. A chopper carrying a group of\nAmericans (including one child) is shot down behind Taliban lines. The Navy\nSEAL Master Chief onboard attempts to guide the surviving kid through the\nwilderness and past hostile forces to safety. There aren\u2019t many notices for\nthis picture thus far and all of the reviews that have appeared so far are\nnegative. They all stated that the film seemed unbelievable, delivering a\nseries of stereotypes and glorifying the battle scenes in a manner that was\nill-advised. They also wrote that the backdrops were unconvincing and looked\nlike California instead of Afghanistan. Johnny Strong, Athena Durner, Raj Kala,\nJames Sherrill, Siya and Todd Jenkins headline the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There are plenty of older films receiving high definition\nupgrades this week. The last edition made a note of Arrow Video\u2019s release of\nthe Harrison Ford thriller Witness <\/em>(1985) on Blu-ray. This week, the 4K\nUltra HD edition is available for purchase. Extras are the same for both\neditions and you can read all about the discs here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Cohen Media Group is presenting The Buster Keaton\nCollection: Volume 5<\/em> on Blu-ray. It features newly restored versions of Three\nAges<\/em> (1923) and Our Hospitality<\/em> (1923).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jackie Chan: Emergence of a Superstar<\/em> is arriving on\nBlu-ray from Criterion. This set includes the six movies Half a Loaf of Kung\nFu<\/em> (1978), Spiritual Kung Fu<\/em> (1978), The Fearless Hyena<\/em>\n(1979), The Young Master<\/em> (1980), Fearless Hyena II<\/em> (1983) and My\nLucky Stars<\/em> (1985). These are the titles that mixed comedy and martial\narts, making Chan the biggest box office draw in his homeland. Most of the\ntitles have been given 2K restorations. The are film historian commentaries for\nthe first and fourth movies, an interview with a movie expert about\nactor\/director Chan, archival interviews with the lead as well as co-stars like\nSammo Hung, a promo reel of The Young Master<\/em> from the 1980 Cannes Film\nFestival, a 2005 interview with producer\/director Lo Wei, outtakes from a\ncouple of titles and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n T.R. Baskin<\/em> (1971) is a comedy with Candice Bergen\nabout a young woman who heads to Chicago to start a new life and finds big-city\nliving cold and challenging. Fun City Editions is presenting the title. The\ndisc contains an interview with producer\/writer Peter Hyams, a film historian\ncommentary, a booklet with an essay on the film and a \u201climited edition\u201d\nslipcover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lionsgate is presenting the Clerks I \u2013 III Premium Box\nSet<\/em>, which contains Blu-rays of all three titles in the Clerks<\/em>\nseries (made in 1994, 2006 and 2022) housed in a 3D miniature of the Quick Stop\ncorner store. The back features a working VHS return slot with a set of\nstickers. It seems like the packaging is the unique element here, so one can\nassume the bonus features will be the same as in previous editions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The out-of-print teen sex-comedy Joysticks <\/em>(1983) is\nbeing rereleased on DVD from the MVD Rewind Collection. It\u2019s about a group of\narcade patrons who try to save their favorite hangout spot from being closed.\nThe cast includes Joe Don Baker, Leif Green and Jon Gries. The disc comes with\na trailer. Or if you can wait, MVD will also be releasing a Blu-ray of the\ntitle sometime next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paramount is delivering several anniversary editions of\ntheir catalog titles. Scrooged<\/em> (1988) with Bill Murray is receiving a 4K\nUltra HD edition (no Blu-ray is included). Besides the new restoration, this\ndisc contains over 50 minutes of never-before-seen special features, along with\na commentary track with director Richard Donner (The Omen, Superman, The\nGoonies, Lethal Weapon<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The classic Eddie Murphy\/Dan Aykroyd comedy Trading\nPlaces<\/em> (1983) is celebrating its 40th<\/sup> anniversary with a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray edition. The 4K transfer was supervised by director John\nLandis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London,\nInto the Night, Coming to America<\/em>). One assumes previously released extras\nwill be included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And, if you\u2019re a really, really big fan, Star Trek: The\nPicard Legacy Collection<\/em> is an elaborate box set that includes a complete\ncollection of all the TV shows (The Next Generation<\/em> and the recent Picard<\/em>)\nas well as the four movies featuring the famous character. Naturally, the set\nwill also come with premium packaging and 35 hours(!) of extra features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paramount is focusing on DVDs this week. You can pick up the\nEddie Murphy 4-Movie Collection<\/em> which contains Coming to America<\/em>\n(1988), Harlem Nights<\/em> (1989), Boomerang<\/em> (2002) and Norbit<\/em>\n(2007), as well as a 2-Movie Collection<\/em> that contains the excellent Joe\nDante movies Explorers<\/em> (1985) and Small Soldiers<\/em> (1998) on DVD\n(these two titles are also available on Blu-ray from different distributors).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Perfume of the Lady in Black<\/em> (1974) is an Italian\ngenre flick starring Mimsy Farmer about an industrial scientist, is troubled by\nstrange hallucinations related to the tragic suicide of her mother. RaroVideo\nU.S. is presenting a Blu-ray of the title with both the English and Italian\naudio tracks, as well as a director commentary, a short from the filmmaker and\na trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! Factory is pleased to present the Academy Award\nwinning dark comedy Fargo<\/em> (1996) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\n\u201cCollector\u2019s Edition.\u201d This effort from the Coen Brothers (Blood Simple,\nRaising Arizona, Miller\u2019s Crossing, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men,\nThe Ballad of Buster Scruggs<\/em>). It contains a new 4K restoration of the\ntitle alongside a commentary track with director of photography Roger Deakins,\narchived interviews with the Coen Brothers and star Frances McDormand, a\nfeaturette on the film\u2019s setting, an American Cinematography article on the\nphotography and publicity materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Surviving the Game<\/em> (1994) is also slated to be\nreleased on Blu-ray by the distributor. This tale follows a homeless man who is\nhunted like an animal by wealthy killers. Naturally, he manages to turn the\ntables on them as events progress. The amazing cast includes Ice-T, Rutger\nHauer, Charles S. Dutton, John C. McGinley, William McNamara, Gary Busey and F.\nMurray Abraham. Strangely enough, no bonuses have been listed yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony Pictures is delivering the excellent historical war\npicture Black Hawk Down<\/em> (2001) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook\nset. Besides the picture upgrade, it includes all previously released extras.\nThe same goes for the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of The Guns of\nNavarone<\/em> (1961). Both of these pictures were nominated for several Academy\nAwards (the first film won for Film Editing and Sound, the second for Special\nEffects).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Universal Studios is celebrating the 50th<\/sup>\nanniversary of American Graffiti<\/em> (1973) by giving the amazing George\nLucas film a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release. It follows a group of teens\ncruising around their hometown on their last night before college. In addition\nto a cleaned-up image, the discs come with a Lucas commentary track, a lengthy\nmaking-of, screen tests and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The studio is also presenting a bunch of Marx Brothers\ntitles on Blu-ray. You can now pick up The Cocoanuts<\/em> (1929), Animal\nCrackers<\/em> (1930), Monkey Business<\/em> (1931), Horse Feathers<\/em>\n(1932) and Duck Soup<\/em> (1933). All of the titles have been recently\nrestored and include film historian commentary tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, Universal is releasing a remastered Blu-ray of\nthe Martin Scorsese effort Casino<\/em> (1995).<\/p>\n\n\n\n The studio is also putting out a pair of 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray Steelbooks that will only be available through retailer Best Buy. These\nexclusives will be for the films Scarfac<\/em>e (1983) and the recent\nholiday-themed Violent Night<\/em> (2022) with David Harbour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, VCI is making A Bullet for Sandoval<\/em> (1969)\navailable on Blu-ray. It\u2019s a western with Ernest Borgnine about a rebel soldier\nand outlaw seeking revenge on everyone whom he feels wronged him. This disc\ncontains a 4K restoration of the shorter US cut and the full-length Spanish\nversion. It also includes a film expert commentary with Alex Cox (Repo Man<\/em>)\nand a US trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Gamblers<\/em> (1970) is a comedy\/drama about card\nsharks trying to fleece an aristocrat in Yugoslavia. This Blu-ray includes a\nwriter\/podcaster commentary and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s a quiet week for kid-friendly entertainment.
