<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\nAFIRE \u2013 A writer decides to visit his holiday home on the\nBaltic Sea to finish his latest novel. A friend accompanies him, but they are\nsurprised to find another associate already at the house. She is a blunt figure\nwho begins questioning the lead and his work. When the writer\u2019s editor arrives\nwanting to read his finished manuscript, tension escalates even further. All\nfour characters are then put into danger when a large forest fire threatens the\nscenic locale. This foreign-language film from noted German director Christian\nPetzold (Phoenix, Transit, Undine<\/em>) earned plenty of praise from critics.\nA small number found the central character difficult to like and the plotting\ntoo slow for their tastes. Regardless, everyone else stated that the\ncomedy\/drama was extremely well-acted and that the script was sharply written\nand ultimately moving. It stars Thomas Schubert, Paula Beer, Langston Uibel and\nEnno Trebs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n DARKGAME \u2013 This independent horror feature was produced in\nthe UK and involves a game show that takes place on the dark web. Contestants\non the live broadcast are captives and anyone who doesn\u2019t win is executed on\nair. A detective and his task force set out to interrupt the program as it is\nbeing played out. While the hero intends to arrest the host and save those\ninvolved, he ends up finding himself on the show fighting for his life. This\neffort is from the co-director of the 2010 Africa-set zombie picture The\nDead<\/em> as well as recent chillers like The Ledge<\/em>. The title is\npremiering on disc in this part of the world and there are no reviews of the\npicture yet. So, interested parties will have to go in cold and hope for the\nbest. The cast includes Ed Westwick, Andrew P. Stephen, Natalya Tsvetkova and\nLola Wayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n GRINGA \u2013 Being a social outcast at a high school is bad\nenough. This tale begins with an unpopular teenage girl also having to deal\nwith the sudden and unexpected death of her mother. She gets in contact with\nher estranged father, an ex-athlete now coaching a ladies\u2019 soccer team in\nMexico. The two butt heads immediately, but try to form a connection and make a\nstart fresh with each other. Reaction towards the comedy\/drama was split. Half\nthought the characters were interesting, but that they were trapped in a bland\nand forgettable story that didn\u2019t offer any surprises or insights. The very\nsame number did think that the cast made up for any plot deficiencies and\ncalled it a sweet, genuine and enjoyable film that would have you rooting for\nthe two main characters to make amends. It features Judy Greer, Roselyn Sanchez\nand Steve Zahn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n LAST WORDS \u2013 Set in the year 2086 after an ecological\ndisaster has essentially ended the world, a cinema-obsessed man of African\ndescent and his sister travel across Europe. In Italy he encounters an old man\nwho keeps a film vault. The two connect over movies and set out to share their\nlove with any survivors they encounter, as well as shoot a story chronicling\nthe potential last days of the planet. This Italy\/France co-production was\ncompleted in 2020, but failed to find a North American distributor and was\nreleased exclusively on streaming platforms in 2021. It is finally being put\nout on disc. Unfortunately, many consider the title to be an epic misfire.\nOne-third of notices did think the movie was an effectively grim and poignant\nlook at the end of the world. However, the vast majority wrote that the script\nwas jumbled and confused in its intent. They also asserted that the script had\ndistasteful elements and featured too many scenes of characters sitting around\nand watching superior films. Nick Nolte, Kalipha Touray, Charlotte Rampling,\nAlba Rohrwacher, Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd and Maryam d\u2019Abo headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n MAN OF GOD \u2013 Here is another title that was made a few years\nago and struggled to reach North American audiences (although for different\nreasons than the previous film). This Greek effort is a biopic of Saint\nNectarios of Aegina. The priest fought with bishops and other superiors,\ndefying them and facing exile while choosing to care for the poor and uplift\ncitizens in his homeland. He became a renowned saint in the process. The film\nwon some awards at various festivals, but reaction was mixed in other parts of\nEurope. It didn\u2019t land a US distributor for three years. A few reviewers did\nthink it capably told the story of the figure and appreciated the film, but\nslightly more felt the man\u2019s story was bluntly told and that it was obvious in\nits attempts to convert viewers. It features Alexander Petrov, Tonia\nSotiropoulou and Mickey Rourke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n THE MASTER CHIEF: PART ONE \u2013 This independent drama involves\na Filipino sailor who enlists in the US Navy. The protagonist finds himself\ndealing with various forms of racism and ends up crossing paths with a\ntight-knit group known as the Filipino Mafia. In order to rise in the Navy\nranks, he forms an unexpected alliance and teams up to go undercover and help\narrest a sinister arms dealer. This picture played at some festivals in San\nDiego (where it was filmed), but for many in other parts of the continent this\nBlu-ray release will be the first opportunity to check it out. There are\ncurrently no notices available for the picture, so curious parties will have to\ngo in cold. And yes, as the title suggests, there are plans for a follow-up\nmovie in the near future. It stars Chris Soriano (who also wrote and directed\nthe picture), Jon Awit, Ryan Barrier<\/p>\n\n\n\n MY BABYSITTER THE SUPERHERO \u2013 A teenage boy gets into big\ntrouble with his mother after playing his guitar in the backyard and receiving\na costly fine for excessive noise. The lead is shocked to learn that an elderly\nbabysitter will now be watching over him. His frustration turns into amazement\nwhen he finds out that the old lady is actually a superhero named Agent Action\nand that he must help her save the planet. This independent family-feature has\nbeen available for months on streaming services, but is now arriving on Blu-ray\nand DVD. Despite it being around for some time, critics have yet to watch or\nreview the picture. Online viewer reviews suggest that if you keep expectations\nin check, it\u2019s an innocent and reasonable enough effort that may amuse little\ntykes. Oddly enough, some sites list the title as My Babysitter the Super\nHero.<\/em> The cast includes Mo Collins, Jim O\u2019Heir, Maile Flanagan and Justin\nEllings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n LA SYNDICALISTE \u2013 When the head union representative of a\nFrench multinational nuclear energy corporation learns staggering details about\nbackroom deals between various nations, she decides to become a whistleblower\nand report the transgressions to the world. The protagonist ends up being\ntargeted by some of the figures and not only is physically attacked, but set up\nas a suspect in the crimes. She must fight to clear her name and survive the\nordeal. Based on a true story, this tale from France earned more positive\nresponse from the press than negative feedback. A limited number did think that\nthe movie was talky, yet still failed to deliver important details and left\nthem wanting to understand much more about the real story. However, most\ncredited the film as being a tense and effective display of the threats and\nmisogyny carried about against the informer. Isabelle Huppert, Gr\u00e9gory Gadebois\nand Fran\u00e7ois-Xavier Demaison headline the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n As mentioned, there will be plenty of interesting older\ntitles arriving on shelves. Criterion will be giving Hong Kong action cinema\nfans a treat with their double-feature release of The Heroic Trio<\/em> (1993)\nand Executioners<\/em> (1993) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set, as well as a\nstand-alone Blu-ray. The first title is set in a grim future world and involves\na team of women (Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and Anita Mui) hunting down a\nbaby kidnapper. The other title is a sequel in which the leads attempt to protect\ntheir city from a military coup. As noted, both films have been given 4K\nrestorations and arrive with an interview with co-star Anthony Wong, as well as\na film critic discussion on the features and trailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The distributor is also putting out a Blu-ray of the drama Nothing\nBut a Man<\/em> (1964). It follows an African-American man who marries the\nschool-teacher daughter of a preacher in a racist town. The pair must deal with\nthe ire of locals and conflicts within their own family. The picture has been\nrestored in 4K and includes a feature on director Michael Roemer, a 2004\nconversation between the filmmaker and his cinematographer, archival interview\nwith cast members and an essay by a movie critic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In The Swiss Conspiracy<\/em> (1976), David Jansson plays a\nman hired as a security consultant for a Swiss bank. When its wealthiest\nclients are blackmailed, the lead attempts to figure out who is responsible.\nFilm Masters is delivering a \u201cCollector\u2019s Edition\u201d Blu-ray of this title, which\nalso features John Saxon, Ray Milland and Elke Sommer. There\u2019s a 4K picture\nrestoration, documentary on the late career films of director Jack Arnold (It\nCame from Outer Space, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Incredible Shrinking\nMan<\/em>), a visual essay on Arnold, a film historian commentary, trailers and\nliner notes on the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Kino is presenting the drama Drifter<\/em> (1974) on\nBlu-ray. The story involves a bisexual hustler and his various relationships\nover the course of the story. The UCLA Film and Television Archive is\npresenting a new 2K restoration of the film. It also arrives with a film\nhistorian commentary and several shorts from director Pat Rocco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n King: A Filmed Record\u2026 Montgomery to Memphis<\/em> (1969)\nis a powerful documentary constructed from archival footage that tells the\nstory of Martin Luther King, Jr. from 1955 to 1968. This Blu-ray comes with two\ntrailers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Last Castle<\/em> (2001) is receiving a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray combo release from the distributor. It\u2019s about prisoners rising against\nan evil warder. The picture stars Robert Redford, James Gandolfini and Mark\nRuffalo. Extras include a director commentary, a pair of featurettes on the\nproduction, deleted scenes, a discussion on the alternate ending and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The underwater monster movie Leviathan<\/em> (1989) is also arriving in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack, in addition to a standalone Blu-ray. Pictured to the left, Peter Weller, Ernie Hudson, Richard Crenna, Amanda Pays and Hector Elizondo play deep sea miners who find a Soviet sub on the bottom of the sea that is housing a mutant creature. Besides the picture upgrade, there are bonuses like a film historian commentary, a lengthy featurette on the production, a pair of cast interviews and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anyone who enjoys the work of Eddie Murphy will be excited\nto learn that Paramount is delivering the 4K Ultra HD set Beverly Hills Cop:\n3-Movie Collection<\/em> (no Blu-rays are included as a Blu-ray only version is\ncurrently available. It contains Beverly Hills Cop<\/em> (1984), Beverly\nHills Cop II<\/em> (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III<\/em> (1994) with improved\naudio and visuals. The third picture is also being put out on its own in 4K\nUltra HD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n RLJ Entertainment is releasing the horror remake Children\nof the Corn<\/em> (2020) in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo package encased in a\nSteelbook. This release is a Walmart Exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The company is also putting out the V\/H\/S\/ Triple Feature<\/em>\nBlu-ray set, which contains three later titles in the indie horror series.\nYou\u2019ll get V\/H\/S\/94<\/em> (2021), V\/H\/S\/99<\/em> (2022), V\/H\/S\/85<\/em>\n(2023). This is also a Walmart Exclusive Steelbook and will only be available\nthrough the retailer until March 3rd<\/sup>, when its release will expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The star-studded comedy Wild Target<\/em> (2010) is being\nreissued on DVD (and not on Blu-ray) by Samuel Goldwyn Films. It\u2019s about a\nmiddle-aged hitman who decides not to kill his target causing chaos in his\nlife. It stars Bill Nighy, Emily Blunt, Rupert Grint, Rupert Everett and Martin\nFreeman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shoreline Entertainment is presenting The Groom Wore\nSpurs<\/em> (1951) on Blu-ray. This is a western\/comedy with Ginger Rogers as an\nattorney who is hired to keep a dim-witted cowboy in check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fans of director Sam Raimi (the original Evil Dead<\/em>\nand Spider-Man<\/em> series, The Quick and the Dead, A Simple Plan, Drag Me\nto Hell<\/em>) will be thrilled to hear that Shout! Factory is presenting a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray Collector\u2019s Edition of the cult hit, Darkman<\/em>\n(1990). Liam Neeson plays a scientist whose lawyer girlfriend is planning to\nrelease documents implicating a developer in a series of crimes. The villain\nsends mobsters to obtain the paperwork and the scientist ends up being blown up\nand assumed dead. He survives and seeks revenge, turning more and more crazed\nas he nears his goal. This edition includes a vastly improved picture, a new\ncommentary with a superfan, an archive commentary with the director of\nphotography, never-before-seen deleted scenes, tons of cast and crew interviews\nas well as publicity materials. A Steelbook edition will also be available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shout! is also delivering two Walmart exclusives. The first\nis a Steelbooks containing a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray of the Collector\u2019s Edition\nof Platoon <\/em>(1986), while the second is a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\nSteelbook of the Nicolas Cage film, Prisoners of the Ghostland<\/em> (2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sony is putting out a Blu-ray of the period romance\/drama The\nLuzhin Defence<\/em> (2000) with John Turturro and Emily Watson. You can also\npick up a Steelbook \u201cLimited Edition\u201d of the Japanese animated feature, Paprika<\/em>\n(2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n Independent distributor Troma is releasing the genre sequel Slashening:\nThe Final Beginning<\/em> (2000) on Blu-ray. As with all titles from the\nproduction house, the Blu-ray will likely come full of extras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Warner Archive is presenting some interesting animated\nfare from the late 1980s. Back then, the studio produced several TV-movies\n(that also were released on VHS) that contained several famous Hanna-Barbera\ncharacters. After being out-of-print for quite some time, these films will be\nappearing on Blu-ray as made-to-order titles. You can purchase all of the films\nin a set called Hanna-Barbera’s Superstars 10: The Complete Film Collection<\/em>.\nEach feature can also be purchased on its own.
