Welcome to another look at some of the highlights arriving\non 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. The upcoming holiday means that it\u2019s very\nquiet, but there are still a few new arrivals and some excellent older\nfeatures. So, if you can\u2019t make it out to the movies this week or need to stay\nindoors for a while, be sure to give one of these titles a try!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BIG NEW RELEASES!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

GREEN CITY LIFE \u2013 Documentary enthusiasts may be intrigued\nby this effort from France. It examines issues like pollution facing our big\ncities. The filmmakers have traveled around to explore new advances in creating\ngreener and cleaner cities of tomorrow. This includes urban farming and\nincorporating green spaces in, around and on top of buildings. Released in its\nhomeland as La Belle Ville<\/em>, the picture was released last year in its\nhomeland. It appears that no one in North America has seen the movie yet and so\nthere currently are no reviews available for it. Hopefully it is an inspiring\nand helpful feature film. For the time being, this feature is only available on\nDVD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS \u2013 This foreign-language\nmultinational co-production set in North Macedonia tells the story of a gay\nwoman caring for a teenage daughter and child with her partner. She is\ndiagnosed with a terminal illness and asks her significant other to care for\nthem after she passes away. Despite never having wanted kids, the lady agrees\nand tries to move forward with the rebellious youths. Reviewers were extremely\nimpressed by this drama. A few did find the drama overplayed and the characters\nbrazen to the point that they had a difficult time relating to them. Everyone\nelse thought it was a beautifully chaotic portrait of a family trying to find\ncommon ground and admired that it never resorted to overt sentimentality in its\napproach. It features Anamaria Marinca, Mia Mustafi, Dzada Selim, Alina Serban\nand Vladimir Tintor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

KIDNAPPED: THE ABDUCTION OF EDGARDO MORTARA – This biopic\ntells the story of a horrific crime perpetrated in 1858. In the Jewish quarter\nof Bologna, the Pope\u2019s soldiers raid a household and abduct a young boy. It\nseems that the child was secretly baptized by his nurse and thus taken by the\nchurch to be converted and receive a Catholic education. The parents fight\nvigorously to have their youngster returned to them, but face an uphill\nstruggle. This Italian\/French\/German co-production was nominated for and won\nawards in Europe and was well-received by critics. A small number thought the\npresentation was ham-fisted and over-the-top, repeatedly repeating its message.\nRegardless, all others thought that it was an operatic but compelling story\nthat effectively showed the horrific journey of a family to reunite. Some\nactually felt that the tale spanned so many years it would have benefitted from\na longer running time. Paolo Pierobon, Fabrizio Gifuni, Barbara Ronchi and\nFausto Russo Alesi headline the feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BLASTS FROM THE PAST!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While it isn\u2019t a big week for new releases, you have a ton\nof options with older pictures. Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid<\/em> (1973) is\nalso being released in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack or as a standalone\nBlu-ray. This picture from Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs<\/em>)\nstars James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan and Jason Robards. It\u2019s a\nrevisionist western following the final days of Garrett and Billy the Kid.\nYou\u2019ll get two versions of the movie in 4K and a third preview cut in 2K, as\nwell as a discussion with a film expert about the movie\u2019s iconic soundtrack, a\nnew documentary about the making of the feature, an archival interview with\nco-star Coburn, trailers and TV spots and an essay on the picture<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Film Masters is presenting the gritty western Kentucky\nRifle<\/em> (1955) on Blu-ray. It\u2019s about a man taking rifles to California. When\nhis stagecoach breaks down, his life is put in danger. You can also pick up Western\nStars<\/em> (1938) from the same distributor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

First Spaceship on Venus<\/em> (1960) is an East\nGerman\/Polish science-fiction effort made behind the Eastern Bloc that actually\ngot a drive-in release in North America. It follows astronauts who meet aliens\non Venus after discovering technology from the planet. German Gemini Entertainment\nis releasing the English-language export version on Blu-ray in widescreen for\nthe very first time in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kino is delivering the Jeff Bridges\/Tommy Lee Jones thriller\nBlown Away<\/em> (1994) as a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack or a\nstandalone Blu-ray. It\u2019s about an IRA bomber who targets the city of Boston. A\nmember of the local bomb squad does his best to stop the explosives from going\noff. The picture restoration comes from the original camera negative. Extras\ninclude a director commentary, a film expert commentary, a making-of, a music\nvideo and publicity materials.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Narrow Margin<\/em> (1990) is a thriller with Anne Archer\nplaying a woman who witnesses a mafia hit. She goes into hiding and a\ngovernment agent, played by Gene Hackman, attempts to save her from hitmen\nwhile she travels on a passenger train. This is a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray pack\nthat contains a spiffy new 4K transfer from Studio Canal, a director\ncommentary, a film historian commentary, a making of featurette, some B-roll\nfootage and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lionsgate is releasing several titles as Walmart exclusive\nSteelbooks. They include Angel Has Fallen<\/em> (2019) in a 4K Ultra HD and\nBlu-ray package, as well as a Blu-ray of the George A. Romero zombie movie Diary\nof the Dead<\/em> (2007). The Sylvester Stallone Escape Plan<\/em> series is\ngetting a triple-feature Blu-ray Steelbook. And Saw X<\/em> (2023) is getting\na 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dramas Once Around<\/em> (1991) and Evening<\/em>\n(2007) are being presented in a double-feature Blu-ray from Mill Creek\nEntertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hilarious comedy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron\nBurgundy<\/em> (2004) is celebrating its 20th<\/sup> Anniversary this year,\nand Paramount are putting out the feature in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. Set\nin the 1970s, it follows a blunt and politically incorrect news anchor and his\nteam, who must come to terms with changing ideas when a talented female anchor\narrives to co-host the nightly broadcast. It stars Will Ferrell, Christina\nApplegate, Steve Carrell, Paul Rudd and so many more familiar faces. You\u2019ll get\nthe theatrical cut in 4K with two additional Blu-rays containing the extended\nedition and the Wake Up, Ron Burgundy <\/em>feature, along with all the\nbonuses from the previous big Blu-ray set.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forrest Gump<\/em> (1994) is being given a 30th<\/sup>\nAnniversary Walmart exclusive Steelbook containing a 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and\ntwo soundtrack CDs. With the exception of the music, the features look almost\nidentical to previous 4K editions of the Best Picture-winning Tom Hanks drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a busy, busy week for Shout! Factory. You can pick up a\nLimited Edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook of the Oliver Stone satire Natural\nBorn Killers<\/em> (1994), presumably with the same extras as the distributor\u2019s\nprevious release of the picture. The same is true for the Keanu Reeves\/Partick\nSwayze crime picture Point Break<\/em> (1991), which is also appearing as a 4K\nUltra HD and Blu-ray \u201cLimited Edition\u201d Steelbook (the packaging is the only\ndifference from this version and the one released last December).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The entertaining cult comedy UHF<\/em> (1989) from Weird Al\nYankovic is being given a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray upgrade. If you haven\u2019t seen\nit, the musician stars as a man who inherits a TV station and creates \u201cunique\u201d\nprogramming to compete with the major networks. The picture upgrade should be\nwonderful and the extras are the same as in the previous Shout! Blu-ray\nedition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can make it a double-feature by purchasing Weird: The\nAl Yankovic Story<\/em> (2022) as a Limited Edition Steelbook containing the\nnot-so-truthful biopic on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. Daniel Radcliffe plays\nVankovic in this creative take on the musician\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of musical artists, the distributor is also\nreleasing the Madonna\/Griffin Dunne comedy Who\u2019s That Girl?<\/em> (1987) on\nBlu-ray. The star plays a parolee who convinces a lawyer to help prove her\ninnocence. The film has been given a 2K restoration and arrives on disc with a\nfilm historian commentary and a trailer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\/\u2019s more. Sony Pictures is giving the Martin\nScorsese classic Taxi Driver<\/em> (1976) a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Steelbook.\nThe movie stars Robert De Niro as the title character, a damaged cab driver on\nthe verge of committing a violent act. This release was mastered from the\noriginal camera negative and comes with commentaries and more bonus features\nthan can be listed here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Unearthed Films is presenting a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray\n(with an accompanying soundtrack CD) of the cult flick, The Guyver<\/em>\n(1991). It\u2019s based on a Japanese manga comic and features a man who finds a\nbiomechanical skeleton and uses it to fight evil. Mark Hamill has a supporting\nrole in the picture. The original R-rated cut has been restored from the\noriginal camera negative. It comes with a co-director commentary track, tons of\ncast and crew interviews, outtakes, publicity materials and more. A\nBlu-ray-only edition is also available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cocaine Bear <\/em>(2023) is being rereleased in a Blu-ray\nand DVD combo Steelbook, it is an exclusive that will only be available for\npurchase at Walmart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Warner Bros. would like you to know that you can now\npurchase the entertaining horror\/action\/comedy The Meg<\/em> (2018) as a\nWalmart exclusive 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray. The discs will be packaged in a\nfancy Steelbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

YOU KNOW, FOR KIDS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sadly, there isn\u2019t much available for kids this week, but\nthe next edition should have some options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
